Guardians manage 12 hits in win over Royals

It was a hit parade down on the corner of Carnegie and Ontario as the Guardians tallied 12 hits in their 8-3 win over the Royals.

Amed Rosario, Ernie Clement, Andres Gimenez, and Oscar Gonzalez each collected two hits in the contest. Rosario would double and triple while Gonzalez managed another double. Gonzalez (2), Gimenez, and Clement would each drive in runs.

Austin Hedges may have had just one hit, but he made it count. Hedgey hit a three-run shot in the 3rd to increase the Guardians lead at the time to four. Owen Miller did manage a hit in four at-bats in addition to driving in a run on a groundout.

The truly interesting part of the Guardians performance is that Jose Ramirez had one hit in two at-bats. This is due to Kansas City intentionally walking Ramirez in his first two plate appearances in addition to a traditional walk later in the game. Considering that Ramirez is the current American League Player of the Week it is hard to question their thought process. Make any non-Ramirez player beat them, fortunately for the Guardians it worked out in their favor.

On the mound

Taking the mound for the Guardians was Cal Quantrill. Quantrill would allow three runs in 6.1 innings on six hits while striking out five. This was the third straight game which saw Quantrill pitch at least 6 innings while allowing three runs or less.

Sam Hentges would record the final two outs of the 7th, striking out one and allowing just one hit.

Enyel De Los Santos and Bryan Shaw would not allow a hit during the 8th and 9th innings with the latter walking two.

What’s next?

A potential series sweep awaits the Guardians as their three game set with the Royals wraps up Wednesday afternoon. A win in the series finale would bring Cleveland within two games of .500 and set them up nicely to eclipse it with their upcoming three game set in Baltimore.

Guardians come out on top in Houston, win 6-1

Getting a win against the Astros is not easy, especially if the game is in Houston. That is just what the Guardians did Monday night. Cleveland came into Minute Maid Park and handed the AL West leaders a 6-1 loss.

Propelling the Guardians offense was none other than Jose Ramirez. With Cleveland clinging to a 2-0 lead, it was Ramirez who doubled that with a two-run shot in the 5th. The perennial MVP candidate would finish the game 2-5 with four RBI.

Triston McKenzie was dominant on the mound, allowing just three hits while walking one over 7 innings with one run coming across to score. Nick Sandlin, Sam Hentges, and Emmanuel Clase would handle the final two frames.

This was a much needed win for the Guardina as they are coming off a 1-3 stretch against two of the worst teams in baseball (Reds, Tigers). While a series win should not be the expectation against Houston, winning one and being competitive in the other two is a realistic outcome. So far so good as one game has already gone to Cleveland’s way.

Game 2 will take place at 8:10 P.M. with Zach Plesac and Framber Valdez starting for each side.

Cleveland defeats Royals in series finale

The Cleveland Baseball Club avoided the three-game sweep in Kansas City by coming away with a 6-1 victory Thursday night.

It took a few tries, but the Cleveland Baseball Club managed to get a win over the Kansas City Royals in their final trip to Kauffman Stadium this season. Even though Cleveland was outhit 10-9, they managed to have three of their four hits with runners in scoring position drive in runs, while only one of Kansas City’s three hits did the same.

Shane Bieber made his final appearance of the season, allowing the one run on four hits with one strikeout in 3 innings. Logan Allen would also allow four hits in 3 innings, but no runs came across to score during his time on the mound. Sam Hentges, Anthony Gose, and Emmanuel Clase each pitched a scoreless inning in relief.

Harold Ramirez and Bradley Zimmer each drove in two runs to lead the Cleveland scoring effort. Ramirez would single twice while Zimmer doubled home a run and drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. Oscar Mercado also drove in a run with a double.

Cleveland will head to Texas for their final three games of the season as they still have a chance to finish .500 on the year

Cleveland collects 15 hits in 10-6 win over Texas

The Cleveland Baseball Club took the third game of their series with the Texas Rangers, winning by a score of 10-6.

After splitting the first two games of their series with the Texas Rangers, the Cleveland Baseball Club managed to come away with a 10-6 victory at home Thursday night. As a team, Cleveland totaled 15 hits while walking four times as they battled back and forth early.

It was a four run 1st for Cleveland as a leadoff home run from Myles Straw got things started on the second pitch of his at-bat. Jose Ramirez would walk and proceed to steal one of his three stolen bases in the contest. Franmil Reyes would drive in Ramirez with a one out RBI double. Bradley Zimmer would then crush a home run into the right field stands, giving Cleveland a 4-0 lead in the 1st.

By the end of the 3rd, Texas had tied things back up at four as Sam Hentges was struggling to get outs consistently. A fielding error from Jose Ramirez did not help matters as two runs, including the tying run, came across due to the error. Hentges would exit after the 4th inning, allowing four runs on rive hits and two walks.

Luckily, Cleveland was able to fight back and score four runs in the 4th along with another in the 5th on an Owen Miller homer. While Texas managed to score two more runs, Cleveland got an insurance run in the 8th from Zimmer who drove in Ramirez.

Cleveland is now back over .500 on the year (63-62) as they are set to square off with the Boston Red Sox in a three games series at home.

Reyes, Ramirez homer in 9-1 Cleveland win

The Cleveland Baseball Club took an early lead and did not look back as they collected 14 hits in a 9-1 win over the Angels.

When taking on the Angels, one would expect the fireworks in the box to come from one Shohei Ohtani. While the AL MVP favorite did manage a single, the long balls came from the Cleveland dugout.

Franmil Reyes clobbered a three-run bomb in the bottom of the 1st to give Cleveland a 3-0 lead, a lead which they would hold the rest of the game.

The second homer came in the 8th with Jose Ramirez connecting on a home run pitch to make it a 9-1 game.

It was the 28th home run of the season for Ramirez.

In all Cleveland scored nine runs on 14 hits while the Angels could only muster one run on four hits.

Sam Hentges started the game for Cleveland, allowing three hits and the only run for the Angels. Hentges would strike out two and walk one in his 4 innings of work.

Trevor Stephan would follow, allowing just one hit and striking out two in 3 innings.

Blake Parker and Justin Garza handled the final two innings, not allowing a base runner.

Cleveland retains Ohio Cup after 9-3 beat down

The Cleveland Baseball Club defeated the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 9-3 as they retained the Ohio Cup for the seventh consecutive year.

If the Cleveland Baseball Club was going to retain the Ohio Cup for another year they were going to need their offense to step up. Luckily that is just what happened. Cleveland would collect 11 hits and five walks as they defeated the Cincinnati Reds 9-3.

Things did not appear that they would go Cleveland’s way early after some shaky pitching from Sam Hentges. Cincinnati would take an early 1-0 lead on a Joey Votto RBI single. The Reds lead would not last as Cleveland fought back with a vengeance beginning in the bottom of the 1st.

Myles Straw would score on a RBI groundout to tie the game in the bottom half of the first frame. While Cleveland only scored one run in the 1st, they were just getting started.

Wilson Ramos would break the tie with a two-run homer in the bottom of the 2nd.

The 3rd inning would see Cleveland’s lead extend to three as Jose Ramirez would drive in a run on a RBI triple. Ramirez would score later in the inning on a RBI groundout.

The very next inning saw Amed Rosario come through with a RBI triple of his own with Myles Straw scoring on the play. Rosario would finish the game 4-5, his  major league leading fourth four-hit game of the season.

After just barely missing a home run the previous inning, Jose Ramirez would deposit a ball into the right field stands to extend Cleveland’s lead to seven.

History from Bradley Zimmer

After Cincinnati got a run back in the 5th, it was Bradley Zimmer who came up in the 7th and crushed an absolute bomb to dead center field.

This home run from Zimmer would travel 471 feet, the longest by a Cleveland player in the stat cast era (2015)

The Reds would add one more run in the 9th, but it was of a no consequence. Cleveland would go on to finish the game and come away with a six-run victory.

Cleveland is set to begin a three-game series with the Oakland Athletics Tuesday. The team still has very faint postseason hopes that could be completely dead or still alive following the series with the Wild Card leader

Ohio Cup outcome

Entering Monday’s make-up game with the Cincinnati Reds, the Cleveland Baseball Club was on the brink of doing something that they have not done since 2014, losing the Ohio Cup. The last time the Ohio Cup went to Cincinnati was in 2014. Since then it has been Cleveland winning the season series five out of seven times with two ties (the tie goes to the previous winner).

Cleveland drops final game in Minnesota 8-2

The Cleveland Baseball Club lost two of three games against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field.

Nothing went well for the Cleveland Baseball Club in Sunday’s 8-2 loss to the Minnesota Twins. Sam Hentges was hit around pretty hard by the Twins, allowing six runs on six hits with four walks in just 3.1 innings. Minnesota hit two home runs off of Hentges during his short outing. Justin Garza came in after Hentges, allowing one run on one hit, a home run off the bat of Nelson Cruz. Phil Maton also allowed a run in the 7th, a bases loaded walk to Luis Arraez.

The Cleveland offense was simply not able to keep up with Minnesota despite having only one less hit (7-6). A huge factor was the Twins walking eight times while Cleveland only walked three times.

Rene Rivera hit his second home run of the season to get Cleveland on the board in the 3rd inning. Cleveland’s second run came on a RBI single from Eddie Rosario which allowed Jose Ramirez to score.

Cleveland lost more than just the game Sunday as Josh Naylor exited the game with an injury in the 4th. Naylor is expected to miss a considerable amount of time with the injury, putting even more pressure on an already offensive challenged lineup.

Cleveland returns home Monday to being their next series as they take on the Detroit Tigers at 7:10 P.M.

Cleveland avoids sweep in Pittsburgh with 2-1 win

The Cleveland Baseball Club managed to avoid being swept in Pittsburgh by defeating the Pirates by a score of 2-1 Sunday.

The trip to Pittsburgh was not going well for the Cleveland Baseball Club as they dropped the first two games against one of the worst teams in baseball. Facing the possibility of being swept by the Pirates, Cleveland made sure that did not happen with a slim one-run victory.

The game was scoreless until the 5th inning when Harold Ramirez came up and launched a solo home run to give Cleveland a 1-0 lead.

It was the third home run for Harold Ramirez in two games as the former Marlin appears to be quite comfortable at the plate as of late.

After the Pirates tied the game at 1 in the 6th, it was Josh Naylor who came to the rescue with a RBI single which drove in Eddie Rosario.

Cleveland only managed four hits and two walks in the contest, not necessarily a dynamic offensive output. The team really needs some answers to fix the offense if they plan on competing this season. Luckily Cleveland was able to get an impressive outing from their pitching staff to come away with a win.

Sam Hentges started the game for Cleveland, pitching five shutout innings and only allowing two hits and one walk with four strikeouts. This was by far the best start of the season for Hentges, even though he did not come away with a win.

Sam Hentges started the game for Cleveland, pitching five shutout innings and only allowing two hits and one walk with four strikeouts. This was by far the best start of the season for Hentges, even though he did not come away with a win.

Phil Maton pitched the 6th, giving up the only Pirates run of the game on a Jacob Stallings RBI single. Maton struck out three batters and allowed three hits in his one inning of work.

Trevor Stephan relieved Maton and allowed just one hit and one walk in the contest. This was the last Pittsburgh hit of the game.

The 8th inning belonged to Emmanuel Clase and he kept the Pirates off the base-paths. This was the third hold of the year for Clase.

James Karinchak struck out one batter in the 9th as he came away with his eighth save of the season.

Cleveland continues their road trip on Monday as they take on the Cubs in Chicago at 8:05 P.M.

Cleveland pummels Baltimore 10-3

The Cleveland Baseball Club completed the four game sweep fo the Baltimore Orioles Thursday afternoon at Progressive Field.

Dingers, dingers, and more dingers. That is the theme of the Cleveland Baseball Club’s 10-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles Thursday. Fresh off their third straight win over the visiting Orioles from the night before, Cleveland put a wallop on Baltimore and hammered three long balls in the contest.

Jose Ramirez got things started for Cleveland with a two-run homer in the bottom of the 1st.

Bobby Bradley would continue his impressive run since being called up with a solo shot to give Cleveland a 3-0 lead.

Eddie Rosario came up to the plate in the 4th with a 3-1 score and added another to Cleveland’s total.

It was just a few innings later that Yu Chang would clobber a two-run blast to give Cleveland a commanding 9-3 lead.

Jose Ramirez would later add the 10th and final run for Cleveland on a RBI groundout.

This was exactly the type of performance at the plate that Cleveland needed with the all hands on deck pitching approach taken on Thursday. Eli Morgan was the starter, but lasted just 3.2 innings. Morgan allowed three runs on five hits while striking out five.

Kyle Nelson (2) and Sam Hentges (1) were the only other pitchers to allow hits in the contest. Trevor Stephan, Phil Maton, and Nick Wittgren combined to 3.2 innings and four strikeouts without allowing a baserunner.

With the home stand now over, Cleveland heads on the road for a three game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates starting Friday.

Cleveland loses to Angels 7-4 despite three homers

Advertisements

The Cleveland Baseball Club hit three home runs, but that was not nearly enough as they lost to the Los Angeles Angels 7-4.

There are plenty of times that when a team hits three home runs that they come out on top. The problem is if they are all solo shots it really makes things a bit more difficult. That was the case for the Cleveland Baseball Club in their 7-4 loss to the Los Angeles Angels.

Cleveland managed three solo home runs in the contest coming from Cesar Hernandez, Franmil Reyes, and Harold Ramirez. The fourth run came on a RBI single from Jose Ramirez sandwiched in-between home runs from Hernandez and Reyes. Despite the three home runs and 11 hits, the offense simply could not do enough to keep up with the Angels. Considering that the team is 24th in runs and averages around four runs per game this is hardly surprising.

Sam Hentges drew the start for Cleveland and it was not a good outing. Hentges failed to get out of the 2nd inning as his stuff was not fooling anyone. The Angels managed six runs on five hits with three walks before Hentges exited the game. A three-run home run from Shohei Ohtani on a ball out of the zone was emblematic of just how this performance went for Hentges. The only other runs that came across for Los Angeles came against Cal Quantrill in the 7th who allowed one run on a Jared Walsh RBI double.

Cleveland has a chance to snap their four-game losing streak Tuesday night in Game 2 of their series with the Angels. It will Zach Plesac who gets the call with Andrew Heaney starting for Los Angeles.
