Nick Sandlin out for year

The Cleveland Guardians relief pitcher will miss the remainder of the postseason.

Cleveland’s bullpen will be down one relief arm for the rest of the postseason. Nick Sandlin has a Teres Major muscle strain that led to his removal from Saturday’s win over Tampa.

As expected the Guardians have replaced Sandlin on their postseason roster ahead of their series against the Yankees.

Nick Sandlin was a valuable member of Cleveland’s bullpen this season, striking out 41 batters in 44 innings. Sandlin allowed three earned runs over his last 26 appearances dating back to July 9th. Opponents hit just .148 and slugged .173 against the 25-year old reliever. Being without a pitcher who is able to shut down opponents will make things a bit more difficult for Cleveland as they continue their postseason quest.

Guardians adjust ALDS roster

The Cleveland Guardians have made some roster adjustments ahead of their series with the New York Yankees.

As expected the Cleveland Guardians have made some roster moves prior to facing the New York Yankees in the ALDS. Aaron Civale and Cody Morris are in while Nick Sandlin and Kirk McCarty are out.

With Sandlin being out for the year and McCarty only being used out of the bullpen since late-July, adding Civale and Morris was a no-brainer. Should any of Cleveland’s starters falter in the first three games they are going to need length out of the bullpen. Having options such as Civale and Morris would be more beneficial in this type of situation. It makes sense that the Guardians would opt for these arms over others.

Nick Sandlin optioned to Columbus

When the Cleveland Guardians take the field Tuesday night in Minnesota they will be doing so without Nick Sandlin. The team optioned the reliever to Triple-A Columbus on Monday.

While his ERA looks impressive at just 2.89, FIP and WHIP tell a different story. At 1.607 Nick Sandlin has seen plenty of baserunners and his 6.02 FIP paints a much different story about his performance.

Perhaps his time in Columbus could lead to improved performance from the 25-year old reliever. It will be about decreasing baserunners and increasing strikeouts for Sandlin. If not he could be passed up by other names on the roster and that is not referencing the imminent return of James Karinchak.

Ramirez, Gimenez homer in Guardians win

Advertisements

After a disappointing series in Detroit, the Cleveland Guardians came home to take on the lowly Kansas City Royals. Facing this opponent at home was what the Guardians needed as they came away with a 7-3 win.

Home runs from Jose Ramirez and Andres Gimenez drove in five of Cleveland’s seven runs. Ramirez hit a two-run homer in the 3rd to break a 1-1 tie. Gimenez broke a 3-3 tie in the 5th with a three-run shot.

Zach Plesac was the Guardians starting pitcher and had a bounce back performance on the mound. Plesac allowed one run on hits and a walk while striking out five in 6 innings. This is the polar opposite of his last outing which saw Plesac surrender seven runs on nine hits in just 4.2 innings.

Eli Morgan, Trevor Stephan, Nick Sandlin, and Emmanuel Clase. Morgan and Clase were spectacular as they combined for four strikeouts while the latter allowed one hit. Stephan failed to record an out while allowing two runs on three hits. Sandlin did not allow a hit or run, but walked three batters.

Other Guardians of note

Oscar Gonzalez keeps chugging along with another 2-4 day. Gonzalez is currently hitting .438 in four games this season.

Steven Kwan was 1-3 with his second triple of the season. Kwan’s steal of second in the 2nd was his second stolen base of the year.

What’s next?

The series at home continues as the Guardians look to secure a win before the final game of the series. Cleveland’s starter is Cal Quantrill while Kansas City will start Daniel Lynch.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:10 P.M.

Guardians come out on top in Houston, win 6-1

Getting a win against the Astros is not easy, especially if the game is in Houston. That is just what the Guardians did Monday night. Cleveland came into Minute Maid Park and handed the AL West leaders a 6-1 loss.

Propelling the Guardians offense was none other than Jose Ramirez. With Cleveland clinging to a 2-0 lead, it was Ramirez who doubled that with a two-run shot in the 5th. The perennial MVP candidate would finish the game 2-5 with four RBI.

Triston McKenzie was dominant on the mound, allowing just three hits while walking one over 7 innings with one run coming across to score. Nick Sandlin, Sam Hentges, and Emmanuel Clase would handle the final two frames.

This was a much needed win for the Guardina as they are coming off a 1-3 stretch against two of the worst teams in baseball (Reds, Tigers). While a series win should not be the expectation against Houston, winning one and being competitive in the other two is a realistic outcome. So far so good as one game has already gone to Cleveland’s way.

Game 2 will take place at 8:10 P.M. with Zach Plesac and Framber Valdez starting for each side.

Cleveland uses 13 hits to top Chicago 12-11

The Cleveland Baseball Club did the unthinkable as they managed to outhit the Chicago White Sox and come away with a win.

Considering the overall lack of offense for the Cleveland Baseball Club this season, coming out on top of a slugfest did not seem to be a likely scenario. However, that was the case Saturday night as they topped the Chicago White Sox 12-11.

Cleveland used 13 hits including three home runs, six doubles, and a triple en route to scoring 12 runs. Every single batter in the lineup got a hit with Amed Rosario, Jose Ramirez, Harold Ramirez, and Austin Hedges even collecting two.

Homering in the contest were Amed Rosario, Austin Hedges, and Owen Miller. It was the first career home run for Miller who took Dallas Keuchel deep in the 5th. Keuchel would exit in the very next inning.

Pitching wise it was a rough outing all around. Triston McKenzie got the start and Chicago scored six runs on four hits and three walks in just 4 innings. Bryan Shaw would allow two runs on three hits in just one third of an inning. James Karinchak allowed three runs on two hits and one walk in one third of an inning as well. Justin Garza, Nick Sandlin, and Emmanuel Clase were the only Cleveland pitchers to not allow a run to cross, but they only accounted for 4 innings in the contest.

At this point Cleveland just needs to let the young guys play and see what they have. Eventually some more highly regarded prospects will get their chance, but for now it is evaluation time with any win they get along the way as a bonus.

Even with the win, it is still an 8 game lead for the White Sox in the division. Cleveland trails Oakland by 5.5 for the second Wild Card spot

Cleveland has a chance to win the series against the White Sox Sunday at 2:10 P.M.

Cleveland clobbered in Houston, lose 9-3

The Cleveland Baseball Club were outhit by the Houston Astros 14-9 and that led to the lopsided final score of 9-3.

The Cleveland Baseball Club was on the wrong side of a lopsided loss as their postseason hopes continue to slip away. It was a 9-3 final score as the Houston Astros came away victorious with Cleveland seeing their slugging first baseman Bobby Bradley exit the game due to injury.

Triston McKenzie was not effective whatsoever as he gave up five runs on eight hits in just 4 innings. Nick Sandlin would follow as allowed three runs on two hits with two walks as he failed to get out of the 5th. Justin Garza would take the mound for the final 3.1 innings, limiting Houston to just four hits and one run scored. Considering how everything beforehand went that has to count as a win of some sort.

Cleveland did manage to score three runs in the contest, but with the game 9-0 at that point they had no impact on the final result and did little to change the projected outcome.

After losing two straight to the Astros, Cleveland is now staring a sweep right in the face. While a win Wednesday wouldn’t do a whole lot for their postseason hopes, a loss would essentially end those aspirations once the score goes final. Cleveland trails Chicago by 9.5 games in the division while they are 5.5 games behind Oakland for the second Wild Card spot.

Cleveland uses 17 hits and 14 runs to top Royals

The Cleveland Baseball Club pounded out 17 hits en route to a 14-6 win over the visiting Kansas City Royals.

While the Cleveland Baseball Club did not win via the walk-off home run for the third straight game, they did manage to come away with a comfortable eight-run victory over the Royals. The Cleveland batters were all over pretty much everything that the Royals pitchers had to offer. Mike Minor was Kansas City’s first pitcher and he surrendered six run on nine hits in just four innings. It was the 4th inning which gave Minor the most trouble as Bobby Bradley drove in the first for Cleveland on a RBI double. Cesar Hernandez would come up later in the inning and add three more to the scoreboard with a three-run shot.

In the 6th it was Roberto Perez taking Erving Santana deep for his fifth of the year.

Santana would give up another run as Amed Rosario drove in Bradley Zimmer on a RBI double.

The homer-fest did not end in the 6th as Oscar Mercado crushed a three-run homer for his first of the season.

Jose Ramirez would cap off the 14-run effort in the 8th with a solo shot. It was Ramirez’ 19th home run of the year.

Cleveland pitching did just enough

Cal Quantrill got the start for Cleveland Saturday and pitched admirably. Quantrill did have two mistake pitches which resulted in two home runs, one to Salvador Perez in the 4th and another to Andrew Benintendi in the 6th. Quantrill would finish the game allowing just the three runs on rive hits while striking out and walking one.

Nick Sandlin would follow Quantrill with three runs coming across to score, although none of them were earned.

With Sunday’s game postponed due to rain, Cleveland enters the All-Star break with a 45-42 record. Cleveland is 7.5 games back of the Chicago White Sox entering Sunday and four games back of Oakland for the second Wild Card spot. A trip to Oakland after the break should provide some intrigue in regards to the playoff hunt.

Cleveland completes sweep of Royals

The Cleveland Baseball Club completed the four game sweep of the Kansa City Royals.

After winning the first three games of their series with the Kansas City Royals, the Cleveland Baseball Club came into Thursday with a chance to sweep the series. That is just what they did after completing a 4-0 victory on the road to win their fifth straight game overall.

Triston McKenzie was the starter for Cleveland and this was the type of outing he truly needed. McKenzie only allowed 2 hits over 5 innings of work while striking out 5. The one area that still needs some work is the free passes as he walked 5 batters in the contest. Overall this is step in the right direction for the young pitcher.

The combination of Nick Sandlin and James Karinchak handled inning 6-8. Sandlin and Karinchak did not allow a hit and the only base runner allowed was on a walk by Karinchak.

The 9th inning got a bit dicey as the first two Royals reached base with Emmanuel Clase on the mound. Luckily Clase was able to get a double play ball and a strikeout to finish off the contest.

What about the offense?

Cleveland pounded out 11 hits in the contest as they scratched across 4 runs. The scoring started in the 2nd inning with Amed Rosario driving in Harold Ramirez.

The Cleveland lead increased to 2 with a RBI single from Jordan Luplow. Luplow drove in Rene Rivera on the play. Speaking of Rivera, the veteran catcher went 3-4 at the plate in his debut with the team, not too shabby.

In the 6th it was Rosario again, this time with triple that scored Franmil Reyes. With the two hits the contest Rosario’s batting average is back above .200 on the season.

Reyes came up to bat in the 8th and launched his eighth home run of the season to give Cleveland a little more room in the 9th.

Considering how that inning started it made things a big more palatable after the first two batters reached in the inning.

With the win Cleveland is now atop the American League Central at 17-13 on the year. They will return home to finish off their Ohio Cup series with the Reds starting Friday.

Cleveland rallies to defeat Royals 7-3

Advertisements

The Cleveland Baseball Club scored seven consecutive runs as they rallied to defeat the Kansas City Royals.

Things were not going great for the Cleveland Baseball Club early in Kansas City. A combination of the Royals getting 3-0 lead and Angel Hernandez just being plain awful made it seem like that it was not going to be their night. Luckily Cleveland was able to score seven unanswered runs from the 6th inning on as they managed to win the second game in a row in comeback fashion against Royals.

Everything got started when Royals shortstop Nicky Lopez committed a throwing error with the bases loaded. This led to two runs for Cleveland in the 6th inning. Harold Ramirez would follow with a game-tying RBI single.

Ramirez would drive in another run as he would double home Franmil Reyes in the 8th. Josh Naylor would subsequently drive in Ramirez with a single of his own. The Cleveland scoring run was capped off with a Jake Bauers two-run homer, his first of the year.

After an atrocious 1-17 start to the year, Bauers is starting to turn things around just a bit. Bauers is slashing .283/.375/.464 with an OPS of .839 over his last 33 plate appearances, including two doubles and one home run. There are two multi-hit outings mixed in with some hitless appearances along the way, but maybe things are heading in the right direction.

On the mound

It was an all hands on deck day for the Cleveland pitching staff. Phil Maton served as the opener, allowing 1 runs on 2 hits and 1 walk in 1.1 innings. Sam Hentges would follow Maton, giving up 2 runs on 6 hits in his 3.1 innings of work.

Nick Sandlin and Nick Wittgren pitched the middle innings with neither player allowing a baserunner. Cal Quantrill would pitch the final two innings, allowing 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out two.

Cleveland is now one game back of division leaders Chicago and Kansas City. The Cleveland offense is struggling to find their stride, but as long as they have their pitching staff they have a puncher’s chance.
