Guardians DFA Bradley, Allen

In a move that can be filed under way past due, the Cleveland Guardians have designated Bobby Bradley and Logan Allen for assignment.

Bradley was an option at first base but has been supplanted by Owen Miller and to a lesser extent Josh Naylor. Miller and Naylor have produced while possessing an ability to put bat to ball that Bradley lacks. Bradley was not someone who was going to be a franchise cornerstone as he doesn’t produce enough to warrant extended playing time with his extreme three true outcome approach thag is really just one outcome, strikeouts.

Allen has not been able to find his footing in Cleveland as he has largely struggled across the board. The 25-year old hurler has a 5.45 ERA, 1.572 WHIP, and 6.9 K/9 in 22 games (69.1 IP).

The Guardians being able to turn the page on players that are not working out versus continued playing time for no reason is a massive step forward. This team cannot be held hostage by the occasional bursts of offense of players from the past (Jesus Aguilar, Yandy Diaz). Some players may experience success elsewhere but are not necessarily right for the moment on a contending team, the latter applied to the aforementioned names.

Cleveland victorious over Texas 9-6

Advertisements

It was a nine run stretch in the 3rd and 4th innings that led Cleveland to victory over the Rangers.

In between the first and third out of the 2nd inning, the Cleveland Baseball Club scored four runs thanks to three hits, two walks, two stolen bases, and a wild pitch. It was a home run from Austin Hedges and a two-run single from Jose Ramirez which did most of the damage. Andres Gimenez would score on a wild pitch after singling and stealing a base earlier in the inning.

The 4th inning was strikingly similar as the scoring started with a solo home run, this time from Bobby Bradley. A walk and some infield singles later saw Cleveland take a 9-3 lead.

Even though Texas was able to come within three in the 9th, it was not a real threat as Cleveland hung on to win 9-6.

Eli Morgan drew the start for Cleveland and pitched just well enough to get the win. Morgan allowed four runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings.

The only other Cleveland pitcher to allow a run was Blake Parker. Parker allowed a two- run homer in the 9th to Jose Trevino, but managed to record the final two outs to end the game.

Both teams return to action Saturday night at 7:05 P.M. with two games left in the season.

Cleveland swept in doubleheader by Royals

It was not a good day for the Cleveland Baseball Club as they were swept by the Kansas City Royals in a doubleheader at home Monday.

Things were much better for the Cleveland Baseball Club over the weekend as they took two of three from the New York Yankees, combining to score 22 runs in back-to-back games. Unfortunately they did not enjoy the same success at home Monday in a doubleheader against the Kansas City Royals. Cleveland dropped both games Monday as they fell to 73-76 on the year.

The first game was a 7-2 loss as Triston McKenzie was lit up by the Royals. Kansas City hit three two-run homers off of McKenzie as he allowed seven runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out four in just 4.1 innings. Cleveland’s offense managed six hits in the contest with both runs scoring in the 5th on a Jose Ramirez RBI single.

Game 2 was not much better as Cleveland had just four hits in a 4-2 loss. It was a bullpen game for Cleveland that saw three different pitchers allowing runs, including Anthony Gose in his MLB pitching debut. This time around it was solo shots from Andres Gimenez and Bobby Bradley which provided the only runs of the game in the loss.

There are two more games left in the series as the final home stand  of the season continues. Meanwhile the chance to finish at or above .500 seems to lessen as each day passes.

Cleveland clobbers Twins 12-3

The Cleveland Baseball Club capped off their final game of their series with the Minnesota Twins with a 12-3 beatdown at Target Field.

There is nothing like a lopsided win and that is just what the Cleveland Baseball Club got Thursday night at Target Field. Cleveland scored 12 runs on 14 hits as they they came away with a nine run victory.

Cleveland got some impressive power output from Oscar Mercado, Bobby Bradley, and Franmil Reyes. Mercado hit a three-run homer in the 5th to extend Cleveland’s lead to four. While it was the only hit of the game for Mercado, it was quite impactful.

Bradley came through with a two-run shot in 7th to give Cleveland a 10 run lead. It was the second RBI hit of the game for Bradley as he doubled home Jose Ramirez in the 4th.

Reyes capped off their scoring effort with a solo shot in the 9th to make it a 12-3 game. It was a 3-5 effort for Reyes in the contest as he came through with a RBI single in the 7th as well.

Jose Ramirez also had a productive outing, going 3-4 with a sacrifice fly in the 5th and a RBI single in the 7th.

Myles Straw also had three hits in five at-bats, scoring twice along the way.

Cal Quantrill got the start for Cleveland and was fairly impressive. Three runs did come around to score with Qunatrill on the mound, but none were earned. Overall Quantirll allowed three hits and two walks on the night while striking out four.

Cleveland will continue their road trip as they make their way to The Bronx to take on the New York Yankees who are fighting for a playoff spot.

Amed Rosario carries load in 7-2 win over Royals

The Cleveland Baseball Club shortstop went 5-5 in the 7-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals.

Amed Rosario was more than ready for Tuesday night’s game in Kansas City. Rosario started things off in the 1st inning with an inside-the-park home run to give Cleveland a 1-0 lead.

This was just the start of what ended up being a historical night for the Cleveland shortstop. Amed Rosario would come up in the 5th inning and deliver with a two-run single for his third hit of the game.

Perhaps Amed Rosario was a bit tired in the 7th inning as this time his home run went over the fence, not requiring an all out sprint to make it around the bases.

In the 9th Amed Rosario would reach on an infield single to finish the game 5-5. Rosario became the first player to go 5-5 with five RBI and homer in both forms in a game since 1920, the year which RBI became an official stat.

The other two Cleveland runs came off the bat of Bobby Bradley who homered in the 8th inning. Bradley drove in Bradley Zimmer to extend Cleveland’s lead to seven for the moment.

All of the work from Amed Rosario gave Zach Plesac more than enough cushion to come away with a win. Plesac would allow just two hits in 7 innings while striking out seven. This was the first start since early May that Plesac did not allow a run and just his third of the season overall. Before this start Plesac had allowed 19 runs in 27 innings, not necessarily an impressive run. Seeing this type of start, even against a lackluster Royals team, is encouraging to see from a pitcher who has shown the ability to pitch better than he has this season.

Cleveland can take their second game in a row in Kansas City Wednesday night at 8:10 P.M.

Cleveland avoids sweep, beat Rays 3-2

The Cleveland Baseball Club avoided being swept by the Tampa Bay Rays with a 3-2 win, snapping an 11-game losing streak against the club.

The series between the Cleveland Baseball Club and the Tampa Bay Rays had not been going well through the first three games. Tampa took the first three games with Cleveland facing the possibility of being swept in a four-game series Sunday. Even when things appeared to be heading in that direction, Cleveland rallied late and was able to pull ahead of the Rays and secure the all too elusive victory against Tampa with a slim 3-2 victory. With the win Cleveland snapped an 11-game losing streak against the Rays.

Down by a run in the bottom of the 1st it was Cesar Hernandez who continued his power surge. Hernandez launched a solo home run to tie the game. It was the 17th of the season for Hernandez, a new career-high.

Scoring for both sides was kept in check until the 6th inning. Former division foe Nelson Cruz stepped into the box and as expected crushed a solo home run to break the 1-1 tie. Tampa would hold onto the lead until the 8th when some magic happened.

Hernandez would start things off with a leadoff single. Amed Rosario would be hit by a pitch in the very next at-bat, setting things up for a potential comeback. Harold Ramirez would drive a ball into right center allowing Hernandez to score the tying run and Rosario to advance to third.

Bobby Bradley would drive in the tie-breaking run on a sacrifice fly in the very next at-bat.

Now leading 3-2, Emmanuel Clase would come on to close and things went about as well as they could have. Clase needed only 14 pitches to end the game and preserving a much needed win for Cleveland.

Prior to Clase closing the game, Cleveland got an outstanding start from Triston McKenzie. McKenzie woulda allow two runs on five hits with six strikeouts and only one walk in 6 innings. This was easily one of the better performances for McKenzie this season and could be a sign of good things to come from a pitcher who has been consistently inconsistent.

Bryan Shaw would follow McKenzie and allow just one hit on 13 pitches. James Karinchak would get the win in the contest by pitching during the 8th inning which saw Cleveland mount their comeback. Karinchak allowed just one baserunner on a walk in his lone inning of work.

The win prevented Cleveland from falling even further back in the division and Wild Card races. While they are still trail by a large margin in both, they are not necessarily out of it at this moment in time. It will be an off day on Monday before returning to action Tuesday as they host the St. Louis Cardinals.

A tale of two months for Bobby Bradley

Advertisements

Things were going well for the Cleveland Baseball Club first baseman early on, but have since changed when the calendar flipped to July.

Once the Cleveland Baseball Club called up Bobby Bradley and actually played him it appeared that the offensive savior the team was seeking had arrived. During the month of June Bradley had a 152 WRC+, eight home runs, three doubles, and 17 RBI while slashing .254/.321/.634/.955. Things were great, The Assassin had finally arrived, it would not last.

The month of July was not kind to Bobby Bradley at all. Bradley’s WRC+ dropped 62 points for the month (90) while the slash line plummeted to a less than optimal .160/.333/.320/.653. The fact that Bradley could reach base via a walk is the only thing making this not a complete disaster. Bradley’s walk percentage increased from 9% to 15.9% during the month of July. In 68 plate appearances Bradley has just eight hits including two doubles and two home runs, while striking out an alarming 41.3% of the time. (Bradley’s strikeout rate was 26.9% during June). Bradley’s isolated power dropped to .160, a far cry from the .380 he enjoyed during the previous month.

Considering the profile of Bobby Bradley all of this is expected. Bradley will hit his fair share of home runs (11 so far), and will strike out a lot (35.3% in 190 plate appearances). The WRC+ will fluctuate quite frequently during certain stretches where he is locked on and punishing mistake pitches and when he is striking out at an extremely high rate. On the season Bradley has a 105 WRC+ while slashing .205/.305/.464/.769 while driving in 24 runs and scoring 28 times. It will be about riding the highs while riding out the lows when it comes to the performance of Bobby Bradley at the plate.
