Guardians complete sweep of Royals, win 4-0

The Cleveland Guardians were able to take care of business with a 4-0 win Wednesday in what was the final game of their series and brief home stand. This victory completed a three-game sweep of the Kansas City Royals with wins of 7-3 and 8-3.

While not a blowout or seemingly dominant, the Guardians were able to keep the Royals off the scoreboard despite multiple scoring chances. Cleveland’s pitching staff was able to limit Kansas City to a 1-6 line with runners in scoring position, but with no runs allowed. This is in addition to stranding nine Royals baserunners over the course of the game.

Konnor Pilkington did find himself walking a tightrope at times, allowing five hits and two walks. Pilkington did find himself in a bases loaded situation with one out in the 4th inning, but was able to get a strikeout and groundout to dance out of trouble. It was a career-high 5 innings pitched and eight strikeouts for Pilkington. Eli Morgan would follow Pilkington allowing two hits and striking out four in 2 innings.

Offensively the Guardians got some help from the top of the order. Steven Kwan and Amed Rosario each had two hits. Rosario was able to get Cleveland on the board with a 3rd inning RBI single.

From the bottom third of the order it was Andres Gimenez going 2-4 with a double and his RBI single in the 4th allowing Owen Miller to come around to score.

Jose Ramirez did not collect a hit, but was still able to drive in a run with a RBI groundout in the 5th inning.

Another member of the bottom third, Richie Palacios, also had two hits on the afternoon. Palacios’ RBI double in the 8th allowed Gimenez to score Cleveland’s fourth and final run.

What’s next?

The Guardians have an off day Thursday before heading to Camden Yards Friday for a three game set against the Orioles. Cleveland will head into play sitting at 22-24 against a 21-30 Baltimore squad. There is a very real chance for the Guardys to get above .500 with a sweep of the Orioles. This is a great opportunity for a young team to stack successive series on top of each other for consecutive series wins for the first time this season.

Cleveland victorious over Texas 9-6

It was a nine run stretch in the 3rd and 4th innings that led Cleveland to victory over the Rangers.

In between the first and third out of the 2nd inning, the Cleveland Baseball Club scored four runs thanks to three hits, two walks, two stolen bases, and a wild pitch. It was a home run from Austin Hedges and a two-run single from Jose Ramirez which did most of the damage. Andres Gimenez would score on a wild pitch after singling and stealing a base earlier in the inning.

The 4th inning was strikingly similar as the scoring started with a solo home run, this time from Bobby Bradley. A walk and some infield singles later saw Cleveland take a 9-3 lead.

Even though Texas was able to come within three in the 9th, it was not a real threat as Cleveland hung on to win 9-6.

Eli Morgan drew the start for Cleveland and pitched just well enough to get the win. Morgan allowed four runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings.

The only other Cleveland pitcher to allow a run was Blake Parker. Parker allowed a two- run homer in the 9th to Jose Trevino, but managed to record the final two outs to end the game.

Both teams return to action Saturday night at 7:05 P.M. with two games left in the season.

Cleveland returns favor to Chicago, wins 6-0 in shutout

The Cleveland Baseball Club was carried by a strong pitching performance and timely hitting from a certain third baseman.

Three cheers for sweet revenge right? Well, not exactly. The Cleveland Baseball Club flipped the script on the Chicago White Sox, just one day after losing 1-0, it was a shutout victory for the home team this time around.

Eli Morgan started the game for Cleveland, allowing just one hit in 6 innings. The surging Morgan struck out six batters while walking one in what has been yet another impressive performance. Morgan’s outing combined with the offensive output resulted in a final result that was hardly in doubt.

Jose Ramirez came through with an impressive effort Saturday night, driving in three runs thanks to his 36th home run of the season, a two-run shot in the 1st.

Cleveland also got a power boost from an unlikely source, Andres Gimenez homered in the 3rd for his fifth long ball of the year.

As a team Cleveland finished the game with eight hits, with three going for extra-bases, the homers from Ramirez and Gimenez along with a double from Myles Straw. Cleveland batted 3-4 with runners in scoring position compared to Chicago’s 0-8 performance.

The final game of the series will take place Sunday at 1:10 P.M.

Cleveland smashes Yankees in 11-1 win

The Cleveland Baseball Club won their third and final game of their series with the New York Yankees by a very comfortable margin.

The unlikeliest of unlikely outcomes came Sunday afternoon in The Bronx. The Cleveland Baseball Club hammered Yankees starter Gerrit Cole as they came away with a 11-1 victory over New York. Cole allowed seven runs on 10 hits while walking one and striking out seven in 5.2 innings. What bit Cole was the long ball as he allowed home runs to Jose Ramirez and Roberto Perez in back-to-back innings before exiting the game. Prior to that it was three RBI singles which gave Cleveland the lead. Harold Ramirez came though in the 1st and 3rd innings, driving in four runs off just two hits while Perez singled home a run in 3rd as well.

Cleveland totaled 16 hits in all and scored 11 runs along the way while walking three times. Jose Ramirez was a perfect 4-4  and Yu Chang went 3-5, accounting for nearly half of Cleveland’s hits.

Eli Morgan started the game for Cleveland and he was impressive. Morgan struck out just three batters while allowing one run on six hits in 6 innings of work. The only run allowed by Morgan was a solo home run from former Cleveland baseball player Gio Urshela. After Morgan it was three scoreless innings form Trevor Stephan, Blake Parker, and Sam Hentges.

With the win, Cleveland is now 72-74 on the year while the Yankees are firmly in fourth place in the AL East. Cleveland returns home to take on the Royals for the beginning of their final home stand of the year beginning with a doubleheader Monday

Cleveland smashed by Brewers, lose 10-3

A six-run 5th inning led to the Cleveland Baseball Club coming out on the wrong end of a 10-3 final score to the visiting Milwaukee Brewers.

Through the first four innings the game was close and it appeared that the Cleveland Baseball Club could at least make things competitive. That all changed in the 5th inning when the Milwaukee Brewers scored six runs, subsequently chasing Cleveland starter Eli Morgan from the game.

While Morgan was still in the game Milwaukee only scored two of their six runs in the inning. After allowing three hits and a walk, Morgan was removed from the game following a catcher’s interference call which allowed a run to score. Sam Hentges came on and managed to get Rowdy Tellez to pop out before surrendering a grand slam to Lorenzo Cain to clear the bases. With that the book on Morgan was closed, charged with seven earned runs on eight hits and two walks in just 4.1 innings.

Cleveland would finish the teams with just three hits and would go 1-11 with runners in scoring position.

The only thing that can be pointed to as a positive for Cleveland is that they managed to steal six bases in the game. Myles Straw led the way with three while Jose Ramirez stole two and Bradley Zimmer stole one.

Cleveland fell back below .500 on the year with the loss and now stand at 69-70. Game 2 of their series with the Brewers will take place at 6:10 P.M. at Progressive Field

Cleveland not able to keep up with Texas, lose 7-3

The Cleveland Baseball Club was outscored by four and outhit by nine in a 7-3 loss at home to the Texas Rangers.

The first game back from the Little League Classic did not go well for the the Cleveland Baseball Club. Texas totaled 15 hits compared to just six for Cleveland which contributed to the four-run loss.

Eli Morgan started for Cleveland and really was not fooling anyone. Morgan allowed four runs on eight hits with two walks in just 4.1 innings. The Rangers stuck early with as Nate Lowe hit a three-run homer in the 1st, the bulk of the runs scored against Morgan. A fourth run came across to score in the 5th against Morgan, eventually leading to his exit.

The Rangers did not do all of their damage against Morgan as they managed to score three runs in the 9th off of Bryan Shaw. Shaw allowed two singles while recording two outs in the final frame, but allowed a three-run homer to DJ Peters ending his outing.

Cleveland did get two homers from non-lineup regulars, Daniel Johnson and Yu Chang. Neither player sees the field all that much and it is more than likely they are not on the roster next season.

Wednesday presents an opportunity to even up the series with Texas as Game 2 is scheduled for 7:10 P.M.

Daniel Johnson homers in 3-1 win over Twins

The Cleveland Baseball Club outfielder provided just enough for the team to come out on top over the Twins Tuesday.

Called up the day before and in need to prove that he has a spot on the big league roster, Daniel Johnson stepped up to the plate in the 5th inning already 0-1. Eager to get a hit after flying out in the 2nd, Johnson took a hack at a first pitch curveball and missed. Opening an at-bat with a off speed pitch, particularly a curveball is a risky endeavor as it can lead to a batter keying in on a fastball since it is unlikely he will see two curves in a row. That is just what happened as Johnson took a middle-in fastball on the very next pitch and hit it on to the concourse in right field.

This was one of two hits on the day for Daniel Johnson, the second of which was a lot less exciting, an infield single. However, the important aspect of his first hit it was enough to give Cleveland a win. Minnesota could only muster one run in the contest while Cleveland scored three, two of which came on Johnson’s home run in the 5th. The third run came in the 6th with Amed Rosario scoring on a Wilson Ramos sacrifice.

The story of the game was not all about Daniel Johnson and the offense. Eli Morgan took the hill to start the game and delivered an impressive performance. Morgan would allow just three hits and two walks over 6 innings, keeping the Twins off the scoreboard along the way.

Minnesota did have a chance to do some damage thanks to a shaky outing from Trevor Stephan. Stephan walked the bases loaded while failing to record an out in the 8th. James Karinchak was called into action and managed to keep the damage to a minimum, just one run scoring on a fielder’s choice. Emmanuel Clase would come in the 9th, striking out two batters to earn the save.

Cleveland scores three in 10th in win over Blue Jays

Extra-innings were needed, but the Cleveland Baseball Club managed to get three across in the 10th to come away with a 5-2 victory.

The Cleveland Baseball Club and Toronto Blue Jays headed to extra-innings Monday afternoon and things did not go well for home team. Myles Straw started the inning on second and would advance on a wild pitch. Amed Rosario would drive in Straw to give Cleveland a slim one-run lead. Jose Ramirez followed Rosario and proceeded to hit a mammoth blast to extend the lead to three. It was the 23rd home run of the season for Ramirez.

Emmanuel Clase came on in the bottom of the 10th and shut the door on just 10 pitches. Cleveland would go on to win 5-2 when it was all said and done in Toronto.

Prior to the late drama, Cleveland actually got a lead early in this one. A RBI single from Harold Ramirez would drive in Straw with Rosario being thrown out at home in the top of the 3rd. The very next at-bat saw Oscar Mercado single, allowing Franmil Reyes to score on an error.

As expected, Vladimir Guerrero would tie things up with a two-run homer in the 6th. The score would remain 2-2 until the 10th.

Eli Morgan started the game and pitched well. Morgan would strike out nine over 6 innings, allowing just the two runs on five hits and one walk. James Karinchak found himself in a new role this time out following his recent struggles and would allow just one walk in the 7th. The 8th belonged to Nick Sandlin who allowed just one hit on six pitches. Bryan Shaw worked the 9th and managed to keep things all square to force extra-innings, leading to the exciting finish for Cleveland.

Cleveland and Toronto will return to playing a night game Tuesday night with first pitch scheduled for 7:07 P.M.

Cleveland manages to hold on for 5-4 win over Astros

Advertisements

After losing the first two games and facing a sweep, the Cleveland Baseball Club managed to salvage a win Wednesday against the Houston Astros.

After a 9-3 drubbing Tuesday night, the Cleveland Baseball Club was staring a sweep right in the face. Cleveland and Houston traded runs back and forth from the 3rd through 6th innings. It was then that Cesar Hernandez stepped up to the plate and delivered with what ended up being a game-winning solo home run.

It was the 16th home run of the season for Hernandez, which is a single-season high for the second baseman. Hernandez would finish the game 2-4 with two runs driven in, including a RBI double in the top of the 3rd which got the scoring started.

Houston would fire back after Cleveland’s first run with solo home runs from Jose Altuvve in the 4th and Kyle Tucker in the 5th. The 6th inning set up an epic moment for Ernie Clement. Big Ern stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and drove in Oscar Mercado, Franmil Reyes, and Bobby Bradley to give Cleveland a 4-2 lead. The Astros would again answer with RBI hits from Altuve and Yuli Gurriel. This all led to the solo shot from Hernandez in the top of the 7th.

Eli Morgan was the starter for Cleveland and it was one of the better starts of his young career. Morgan allowed three runs on three hits over 3 innings while striking out five. Bryan Shaw would relieve Morgan in the 6th, allowing the game tying single from Gurriel. Phil Maton was the last Cleveland pitcher to allow a baserunner, an infield single to Myles Straw. The combo of Emmanuel Clase and James Karinchak handled the 8th and 9th, earning a hold (5) and save (11) respectively.

With the win Cleveland trails Chicago by 8.5 in the division while trailing Oakland by 5 for the second wild card spot. A trip home awaits the team as they begin a huge series with the Tampa Bay Rays Thursday.
