Clase blows save as Cleveland loses 5-4

Emmanuel Clase gave up a walk-off two-run homer to Jed Lowrie as the Cleveland Baseball Club lost by a score of 5-4 in Oakland.

Not a great start to the second half of the season for Emmanuel Clase. The Cleveland Baseball Club reliever came on in the 9th to close the game and promptly allowed the game-tying run to reach four pitches in. After inducing a line out to potentially set up a game-ending double-play, Jed Lowrie came to the plate and hit a walk-off two-run home run to hand Cleveland the loss. It was the fourth blown save of the season for Clase as he only threw a total of eight pitches in this outing.

Cleveland was in a position to win due to a competent start from Eli Morgan and some timely home runs from surprising sources. Morgan would allow three runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking one in his 5 innings of work. Phil Maton, Bryan Shaw, and James Karinchak would all keep the Athletics off the scoreboard for the following three innings before Clase’s less than stellar performance.

Half of the runs for Cleveland came on solo home runs from Roberto Perez, his sixth of the season, and Bradley Zimmer with his first of the year. The other two runs came on a Franmil Reyes RBI single and a sacrifice fly from Harold Ramirez.

With the loss Cleveland is still 8 game back of the division leading Chicago White Sox while the gap between themselves and Oakland grew to 5.5 games. Decision time is rapidly approaching for the Cleveland Baseball Club with a minor selloff the most likely scenario.

Cleveland not able to win second straight over Cubs

The Cleveland Baseball Club was not able to come away with a win, losing to the Chicago Cubs by a score of 7-1 at Wrigley Field.

There was a chance for the Cleveland Baseball Club to complete the season sweep after shutting out the Cubs Monday, but Chicago had other ideas sending Cleveland packing with a 7-1 loss.

Eli Morgan was Cleveland’s starter and was pitching well through five innings, only allowing one run on a home run from Kris Bryant. The 6th inning is where trouble started as three more runs were charged to Morgan and Cleveland had to turn to both Nick Sandlin and Blake Parker to get out of the inning. Trevor Stephan allowed two more runs to the Cubs in the 8th on solo home runs from Willson Contreras and Patrick Wisdom.

The Cleveland offense only managed six hits in the contest while walking once. The issue being that a few key bats went hitless in the loss. Amed Rosario, Jose Ramirez, and Bobby Bradley combined to go 0-12 (

Rosario did drive in the only run for Cleveland on fielder’s choice). Cesar Hernandez and Bradley Zimmer both went 1-3 with Eddie Rosario, Josh Naylor, and Ryan Lavarnway each collecting one hit in four at-bats.

Cleveland will look to bounce back after an off day Wednesday as they take on the struggling Twins Thursday in Minnesota.

Cleveland pummels Baltimore 10-3

The Cleveland Baseball Club completed the four game sweep fo the Baltimore Orioles Thursday afternoon at Progressive Field.

Dingers, dingers, and more dingers. That is the theme of the Cleveland Baseball Club’s 10-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles Thursday. Fresh off their third straight win over the visiting Orioles from the night before, Cleveland put a wallop on Baltimore and hammered three long balls in the contest.

Jose Ramirez got things started for Cleveland with a two-run homer in the bottom of the 1st.

Bobby Bradley would continue his impressive run since being called up with a solo shot to give Cleveland a 3-0 lead.

Eddie Rosario came up to the plate in the 4th with a 3-1 score and added another to Cleveland’s total.

It was just a few innings later that Yu Chang would clobber a two-run blast to give Cleveland a commanding 9-3 lead.

Jose Ramirez would later add the 10th and final run for Cleveland on a RBI groundout.

This was exactly the type of performance at the plate that Cleveland needed with the all hands on deck pitching approach taken on Thursday. Eli Morgan was the starter, but lasted just 3.2 innings. Morgan allowed three runs on five hits while striking out five.

Kyle Nelson (2) and Sam Hentges (1) were the only other pitchers to allow hits in the contest. Trevor Stephan, Phil Maton, and Nick Wittgren combined to 3.2 innings and four strikeouts without allowing a baserunner.

With the home stand now over, Cleveland heads on the road for a three game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates starting Friday.

Cleveland options Owen Miller, recalls Eli Morgan

These moves appear to have been made out of necessity.

The Cleveland Baseball Club found themselves in a situation where they needed more pitching and needed to send a player down to recalibrate in the minor leagues. That is the roundabout way of saying that Owen Miller has been option to Triple-A and Eli Morgan has been recalled.

The recall of Morgan comes shortly after Shane Bieber landed on the injured list with a right shoulder injury and a once pitching rich team is now desperate for arms. Morgan previously pitched with the club this season, allowing six runs in just 2.2 innings. Unfortunately Cleveland can’t afford to picky at the moment and really just need arms.

As far as Miller is concerned, this is a case of a guy simply not being able to find his feet. A mixture of being a bit overmatched at the plate combined with constant pitching changes made things quite difficult. Perhaps some time in the minors to readjust could lead to better results next time. A longer opportunity could present itself for Miller should things go south for Cleveland in the upcoming weeks.

Cleveland throttled by Toronto 11-2

The Cleveland Baseball Club was no match for the visiting Toronto Blue Jays losing 11-2.

There was one team that the weather did not impact Friday night and unfortunately it was not the Cleveland Baseball Club. The Baby Jays came to town and brought some hot bats with them as they pounded out 11 runs on 15 hits in just seven innings. Meanwhile, Cleveland managed just two runs on four hits, all coming against Blue Jays starter Hyun-Jin Ryu.

Cleveland’s starter was Eli Morgan who was making his MLB debut. This was not an enviable situation for Morgan as he is facing a team that can hit with the best of them. Morgan allowed six runs on eight hits with two walks and one strikeout. It is best to not make assumptions on Morgan’s abilities after this outing as he deserves another start in better circumstances. There was no reason for that game to be played Friday night, but yet it was.

Toronto also scored five runs in three innings off the trio of Phil Maton, Nick Sandlin, and Trevor Stephan. It did not really matter who was pitching for Cleveland as the Blue Jays were obviously locked in.

Cleveland can take Game 2 and even the series on Saturday. First pitch should take place at 4:10 P.M. That is as long as the weather wants to play along and not interfere for the second game in a row.
