Four Guardians win Gold Gloves

The Cleveland Guardians have four Gold Glove Award Winners.

Five members of the Cleveland Guardians were finalists for a Gold Glove and four ended up coming away with the award. Andres Gimenez, Shane Bieber, Myles Straw, and Steven Kwan won a Gold Glove at their respective positions. The lone finalist not to win was third baseman Jose Ramirez.

Defense was a trademark of the Cleveland Guardians this season so the MLB high four Gold Glove winners is hardly a surprise. In addition to leading all of baseball in Gold Gloves, this was a franchise record for the Guardians.

Notes about the winners

Steven Kwan is just the second rookie in team history to win a Gold Glove, the first being Sandy Alomar. Kwan is also the with rookie outfielder to win the award, the most recent being Luis Robert in 2020.

Myles Straw joins Kwan as the first Cleveland outfielders to win a Gold Glove since Grady Sizemore in 2008.

Andres Gimenez is the second Guardians second baseman to win a Gold Glove in the last three seasons (Cesar Hernandez 2020).

Shane Bieber is the first Cleveland pitcher to win a Gold Glove since Rick Manning in 1976.

The Cleveland Guardians have five Gold Glove Award finalists.

Five Cleveland Guardians players have been named finalists for a Gold Glove. Myles Straw, Steven Kwan, Jose Ramirez, Andres Gimenez, and Shane Bieber are among those at their positions with a chance to take home some hardware.

A Gold Glove for any player would be the first for a Cleveland player since Cesar Hernandez and Roberto Perez won in 2020. With five potential winners there is a good chance the Guardians have at least one Gold Glove winner. The award winners will be revealed prior to Game 4 of the World Series.

Elite defense from Myles Straw

The Cleveland Guardians center fielder ranks at or near the top in multiple defensive categories this season.

The defensive ability of Myles Straw in center field is more than deserving of praise. Straw leads the American League in Outfield Assists (12), Ultimate Zone Rating (12.7), and second in Defensive Runs Saved (15).

It is a good thing that Myles Straw is able to provide this level of defense, because his performance at the plate is on the complete end of the spectrum. Entering Friday Straw is slashing .202/.276/.251/, career-worsts in batting average and slugging percentage and his .527 OPS being the second-worst mark of his career. Straw’s WRC+ currently sits at 54, the second-lowest of his short career (37 in 2020 with Houston). Again, it is a really good thing that Myles Straw plays elite defense, because anything below that would be bench-worthy considering he is basically useless at the plate.

Guardians outfielder production a mixed bag

Advertisements

Through 40 games there has been an interesting array of performances from the Cleveland Guardians outfielders. Hot and cold streaks mixed in with underperformance has led to this wide range of results.

The regulars

Steven Kwan: .257/.358/.354, 6 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run, 13 RBI, 19 runs, 17 walks, 11 strikeouts
Myles Straw: .240/.335/.312, 9 doubles, 1 triple, 6 RBI, 30 runs, 8 stolen bases, 23 walks, 29 strikeouts
Oscar Mercado: .207/.229/.402, 4 doubles, 1 triple, 4 home runs, 15 RBI, 11 runs, 2 walks, 24 strikeouts
Franmil Reyes: .195/.255/.278, 2 doubles, 3 home runs, 12 RBI, 9 runs, 10 walks, 57 strikeouts

One bright spot here is Steven Kwan’s 17-11 strikeout to walk ratio. While Kwan has struggled mightily over the past 10 games with just four hits in 32 at-bats, he did reach base five times via the base on balls with only two strikeouts. Hopefully Kwan can settle somewhere between his hot start and this current bad stretch. That type of consistency would do wonders for the Guardians lineup.

Myles Straw having nine doubles and eight stolen bases (nine attempts) is encouraging from Cleveland’s leadoff hitter. Straw’s speed is what keeps him at the top of the lineup, however if he is not able to get closer to his performance from last season there could be a reason to make a change.

Oscar Mercado has been getting semi-regular playing time, but mostly out of necessity. Franmil Reyes is primarily a designated hitter and is currently injured. Josh Naylor joined the team late, missed time due to COVID-19, and spends most of his time at first base. Ernie Clement and Amed Rosario have played in the outfield on a part-time basis when they are not in the infield. Richie Palacios has been recalled again with Oscar Gonzalez making his MLB debut Thursday. It appears that there are plenty of options to play who offer more offensive upside in Mercado. Considering Mercado’s 24-2 strikeout to walk rate it may not be a bad idea.

2022 has not been kind to Franmil Reyes. Reyes has just three home runs and two doubles in 35 games, far from the expected power production. In 145 plate appearances Reyes has struck out 57 times with 10 walks. Over aggression and compete lack of plate discipline has led to this underwhelming start to this season.

The non-regulars

Richie Palacios: .270/.308/.297, 1 double, 2 RBI, 1 run, 2 walks, 5 strikeouts (37 at-bats)
Oscar Gonzalez: 2-4, 1 double

As mentioned above, Palacios and Gonzalez could be realistic options for meaningful playing time should more roster changes be made. The Guardians have already made major decisions for multiple players this season. Bradley Zimmer and Daniel Johnson have been traded to the Blue Jays and Mets respectively. The club also designated Bobby Bradley and Yu Chang for assignment to continue their clutter clearing process. Cleveland turning the page on these players shows that the team is willing to move on from guys given chances who have not taken the job and ran with it. Continuing that practice with Mercado appears to be a very real possibility.

2022 was always going to be about transition and development. Moving on from players who are definitely not in their future plans while allowing others with upside to take their place. The outfield has been a problem for the Guardians for some time, perhaps they are getting closer to finding answers at the position. There are more players in the system on the way, but finding a consistent baseline with their current options would go a long way for this franchise.

Guardians sign Myles Straw to five-year extension

Advertisements

The Cleveland Guardians continue their trend of signing players to five-year extensions, this time with Myles Straw. Straw is the third player Cleveland has signed to an extension after Emmanuel Clase and Jose Ramirez.

It is a five-year $25 million deal with options of $8 million and $8.5 million in 2027 and 2028 respectively per Zack Meisel.

The Guardians acquired Myles Straw during the 2021 season from the Houston Astros. Straw slashed .285/.362.37 with 16 doubles, 13 stolen bases, and a WRC+ of 108. While Straw is not going to hit home runs, Straw’s power output is via doubles and the occasional triple, it is his ability to get on base and wreak havoc on the basepaths, and that is without mentioning his value as a defender. These are the type of players the Guardians need to invest in as they do not hold the same type of value that the large market clubs do. Keeping Straw longterm will help provide stability in the outfield, something they have not had for some time.

Cleveland drops final game against White Sox

The Cleveland Baseball Club was not able to come out victorious in their final game of the season against the Chicago White Sox.

Despite the fact the Cleveland Baseball Club tallied 10 hits, they only scored two runs as the Chicago White Sox scored five runs on 13 hits. Cleveland was not able to score against White Sox starter Lucas Giolito. Giolito limited Cleveland to five hits in 6 innings while striking out six. Triston McKenzie did not enjoy the same success as he last just 2.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks.

The only two runs of the game for Cleveland came on a Myles Straw RBI single in the 7th, one of Straw’s four hits on the day, and a Harold Ramirez solo homer in the 8th. Harold Ramirez was the only other Cleveland batter with multiples hits in the game as Jose Ramirez, Owen Miller, Roberto Perez, and Oscar Mercado all went 1-4. Amed Rosario, Bobby Bradley, and Yu Chang combined to go 0-11 with three strikeouts.

Cleveland was simply no match for the White Sox as their offense really cannot keep up with a team like Chicago at this point in time. Perhaps things change next season, but a lot of work will have to be done in order for that to happen.

With games against the Royals and Rangers left over the next week, there is still a chance to finish at or above .500 on the year.
