Carlos Santana signs with Royals

Advertisements

The former Cleveland Baseball Club first baseman has agreed to a two-year deal with the Kansas City Royals.

There was a chance that Carlos Santana would have remained in Cleveland this season, but once the Cleveland Baseball Club declined the club option it ended. Santana has signed a two-year deal with the Kansas City Royals paying him $17.5 million in guaranteed money with the possibility to earn another $1 million through incentives.

This is what Carlos Santana would have made if he would have remained in Cleveland on his previous deal.

It was an obvious match for the two parties as pointed out by Zack Meisel of The Athletic. Carlos Santana has excellent numbers when playing in Kauffman Stadium and that could be why the deal was made. Santana will have the opportunity to bounce back from what was a disappointing 2020 campaign.

Meisel also points out the rather bleak options at first base in Cleveland. Those options include Josh Naylor, Bobby Bradley, and Jake Bauers. Bradley is strictly a first base option while Naylor and Bauers both have the ability to play in the outfield. The departure of Carlos Santana means that Cleveland is going to have to turn to a new face at first base and hopefully their internal options can step up to the challenge.

Cleveland declines options on Hand, Carlos, Domingo

The Cleveland Baseball Club has declined options for three players making them free agents.

Carlos Santana, Brad Hand, and Domingo Santana are all free agents after the Cleveland Baseball Club declined their options. The decision from the club is not surprising due to their high salaries. Cleveland previously placed Hand on waivers, but was not claimed by any team.

Cleveland will pay the buyouts to these three players which will result in their free agent status. The team has also picked up the option for Robert Perez, but he is definitely a trade candidate.

There is the possibility that Cleveland can bring back one or more of these players, but significant discounts would have to be taken on the side of the players. Considering how the financial landscape in the COVID-era this may be this is a possibility.

There are also other players that could be playing elsewhere next season. Most notably Austin Hedges and Carlos Carrasco. There is an almost zero chance that Cleveland commits a high amount of their payroll to the catcher position. In regards to Cookie, he is due $12 million a year over the next two seasons and it is hard to imagine the team paying that figure to a pitcher of his age. The reality is that the Cleveland Baseball Club will be making cuts across the board and this could be just the beginning.

Cleveland looking to sweep Chicago Thursday

Advertisements

After two straight walk-off homers, the Cleveland Baseball Club can finish the sweep of the Chicago White Sox with a win Thursday.

A Jose Ramirez walk-off home run on Tuesday sent the Cleveland Baseball Club to the playoffs. Jordan Luplow followed on Wednesday with a walk-off home run of his own Wednesday. Cleveland has a chance to complete the four game sweep of the Chicago White Sox on Thursday.

Zach Plesac will start for Cleveland and has a mostly good track record against the White Sox. The group of Edwin Encarnacion, Yasmani Grandal, Eloy Jimenez, Nomar Mazara, Luis Robert, and Yolmer Sanchez are 5-39 combined with 13 strikeouts. Adam Engel is 2-7 with a double, but has struck out twice. Jose Abreu and Yoan Moncada are both 2-9 with a double each. Tim Anderson is 3-9 including a home run. Chicago has mostly struggled outside of Anderson and a few players batting in the .200’s. A repeat performance for Zach Please on the mound is entirely possible.

Like Zach Plesac, Chicago’s starter Dallas Keuchel has kept several batters silent when facing Cleveland. Cesar Hernandez and Sandy Leon have combined to go 0-9 with 2 strikeouts. Francisco Lindor is 2-12 with a walk. The player with the most at-bats against Keuchel is Delino DeSheilds and it isn’t pretty. DeShields is 9-40 with 2 doubles and 1 home run, but has struck out 10 times. The three best bats in the lineup when facing Keuchel are Franmil Reyes, Jose Ramirez, and Carlos Santana. Reyes has hits in both of his at-bats against the White Sox starter and has walked once. Ramirez is 5-12 with 3 doubles and Santana is 4-15 with a solo homer. Cleveland will need to channel all of their recent offensive success in order to come out with a win Thursday.

The game is scheduled to start at 6:10 P.M.

Cleveland defeats White Sox 7-4

Home runs from Jose Ramirez and Carlos Santana propeled the Cleveland Baseball Club to a 7-4 win over the Chicago White Sox.

The Cleveland Baseball Club kicked off their crucial four-game series with the Chicago White Sox with a 7-4 win Monday. Cleveland totaled 10 hits and walked four times as they were able to get out ahead early, never trailing in the game.

Jose Ramirez keeps on swinging a hot bat and he hit a three-run homer in the Top of the 1st inning to give Cleveland an early lead.

After Josh Naylor doubled and a Delino DeShields Walk, Cesar Hernandez would drive in another run to extend the lead to 4 in the 2nd. The lead would not last.

Aaron Civale would surrender four runs in the 5th inning. Jose Abreu would drive in Yasmani Grandal and Tim Anderson to cut the lead in half. The game would become tied with a two-run homer from Eloy Jimenez. These were the only runs in the game for Chicago. Civale would go on to pitch 6 innings, allowing those 4 runs on 8 hits and 3 walks while striking out 6.

The game did not remain tied for long, Carlos Santana would hit a two-run home run in the bottom half of the 5th to reclaim the lead.

Franmil Reyes would hit a sacrifice fly in the 7th to extend the Cleveland lead to 3.

Nick Wittgren and James Karinchak would pitch the 7th and 8th innings, striking out 5 batters. Karinchak would walk one batter, but they did not score.

Things got a little dicey in the 9th with Brad Hand on the mound. Nick Madrigal would lead off the inning with a single. Tim Anderson nearly cut into the lead, but Delino DeShields was able to rob the Chicago shortstop of a hit.

Hand would strike out James McCann and Jose Abreu looking in consecutive at-bats to end the game.

Some other Cleveland batters of note
  • Josh Naylor went 3-4, but left the game after injuring his foot sliding into second.
  • Francisco Lindor was 2-5 with a run scored.
  • The trio of Franmil Reyes, Tyler Naquin, and Roberto Perez were a combined 0-11 with 5 strikeouts. Reyes did have the sac fly in the 7th to make his night somewhat redeemable.
Cleveland will look to make it two straight over Chicago and three straight overall Tuesday at 6:10 P.M.

Triston McKenzie starts for Cleveland in Detroit

Advertisements

Triston McKenzie will start for the Cleveland Baseball Club as they look for their third consecutive win over the Detroit Tigers.

Not too long ago Triston McKenzie made his first career start and faced the Detroit Tigers. McKenzie was absolutely filthy as he allowed 1 run on 2 hits and struck out 10 batters. The 23-year old right hander will look for a repeat performance when he faces the Tigers again Saturday.

Triston McKenzie will be looking to bounce back after a rough outing in Minnesota which saw him allow 5 runs on 3 hits in just 4.1 innings. The Twins hit 3 home runs off of McKenzie which is not ideal, but luckily Detroit is not the same caliber of team as Minnesota. Only two Tigers batters registered a hit off of Triston McKenzie, Jeimer Candelario and Willi Castro. Miguel Cabrera, Issac Paredes, Victor Reyes, and Austin Romine combined to go 0-9 with 6 strikeouts.

Spencer Turnbull will be starting for the Tigers and this could lead to a good night at the plate for Cleveland. As a team Cleveland is slashing .375/.425/.568/.993 off of Turnbull. Mike Freeman is 3-7 and Cesar Hernandez is 2-6 with a double. Oscar Mercado is 5-15 with 2 doubles and Tyler Naquin is 5-11 with a double. Jose Ramirez is 6-13 with 2 doubles and a triple. Carlos Santana is 8-17 with 3 doubles. There are two notable names who have not had the same offensive success against Turnbull as their teammates, Francisco Lindor and Roberto Perez. Lindor is 3-17 with 2 doubles while Perez is 1-11. Perhaps another shot at Turnbull is just what these two need.

Cleveland can win their third straight game after a 1-0 victory Friday night. The game is scheduled to start at 6:10 P.M. with Triston McKenzie aiming for his second career win over Detroit.

Zach Plesac starts for Cleveland vs Tigers Friday

Advertisements

The Cleveland Baseball Club will send Zach Plesac to the mound as they look to win their second consecutive game over Detroit.

Zach Plesac could use a bounce back game and there is the perfect opportunity for that Friday night as the Cleveland Baseball Club faces the Detroit Tigers. In Plesac’s last start he allowed 5 runs on 6 hits including 3 home runs in 6 innings against the Twins, hardly the performance that is up to the standards required for this team to win games.

Zach Plesac has only faced a handful of Tigers batters in the past which doesn’t provide any real insight to how he will pitch Friday. Miguel Cabrera and Niko Goodrum are both 1-3 and Austin Romine is 1-2. Jeimer Candelario is 0-1 and Victor Reyes reached on a walk in his only plate appearance. Zach Plesac is talented enough that he can pitch well and put the team in position to win.

Detroit is starting Michael Fulmer and there could not be a better sight for a struggling Cleveland offense. Lots of positive history between Cleveland batters and Fulmer. Francisco Lindor is 9-22 with 3 home runs and 3 doubles. Tyler Naquin is an impressive 7-11 with 1 double. Jose Ramirez is 4-16 with 2 home runs and 1 double. Franmil Reyes is 2-3, both hits being home runs. Carlos Santana is 5-15 with 2 doubles and 2 walks. Delino DeShields is 2-5 with 2 RBI. Austin Hedges is 1-2, his lone hit being a double.

Zach Plesac will have the chance to make it two straight wins for Cleveland after defeating Detroit Thursday. The game is scheduled to start at 7:10 P.M.

Cleveland looks to snap seven-game losing streak

Advertisements

The Cleveland Basball Club will look bounce back from their ridiculous loss and snap their seven-game losing streak Wednesday.

After losing in ridiculous fashion, the Cleveland Baseball Club will look to regroup and snap their seven-game losing streak Wednesday against the Cubs.

Aaron Civale will start for Cleveland and he has never faced the Cubs before. Civale has only faced one batter in the Chicago lineup previously and that is Cameron Maybin. Maybin is 1-5 with a double and 1 walk against Civale. The 25-year old right hander did not have his best outing last time as he allowed 4 runs on 7 hits in 6 innings in a loss to the Royals. While Civale did strike out 7 Kansas City batters, this was far from his best outing.

Jon Lester is starting for the Cubs and there are a few batters in the Cleveland lineup with success against him. Francisco Lindor is 4-11 with a solo homer and 1 walk against Lester. Franmi Reyes is 5-7 with 1 double and 1 home run and Carlos Santana is 6-20 with 1 doubles and 3 walks. Lester has been pretty hit or miss this season, allowing 0/1 run or allowing 5 or more.

Carlos Carrasco starts for Cleveland vs. Cubs

Advertisements

Carlos Carrasco will start for the Cleveland Baseball Club on Tuesday as they take on the Chicago Cubs looking to snap their losing streak.

After a day off, the Cleveland Baseball Club will travel to Chicago to face the Cubs. Cleveland will be sending Carlos Carrasco to the mound as they look to snap their six-game losing streak.

Carlos Carrasco has pitched well against most Cubs batters in the past. David Bote, Kris Bryant, Wilson Contreras, Ian Happ, Jason Heyward, Jason Kipnis, and Cameron Maybin are a combined 1-21, the lone hit belonging to Maybin. Javier Baez and Victor Caratini are both 1-2 off of Carrasco while Anthony Rizzo is 2-2, one of those hits being a solo homer. Bily Hamilton is 3-10 with a triple and two runs batted in, Hamilton having a good slash line (.300/.417/.500/.917) against anyone is very surprising.

While Carlos Carrasco will have his hands full with the Cubs lineup, Chicago is countering with Yu Darvish. Cesar Hernandez is the only player with more than 4 at-bats against Darvish with a positive track record. Hernandez is 4-11 with a triple and two runs driven in. Francisco Lindor is the only other batter with a good history against Darvish (2-4). Carlos Santana is 3-16 with a double and 4 strikeouts. Jose Ramirez is 2-8 with a home run with 3 RBI and 1 walk and 1 strikeout. Austin Hedges, Tyler Naquin, Josh Naylor, and Roberto Perez are 1-12 against Darvish. Delino DeShields has faced Darvish once and reached base on a walk.

The game is scheduled to start at 8:15 P.M.

Shane Bieber strikes out 10 in 4-1 win over Brewers

Advertisements

Shane Bieber struck out 10 batters in 5 innings during the Cleveland Baseball Club’s 4-1 victory over the visiting Milwaukee Brewers.

It’s just expected at this point, Shane Bieber struck out 10 batters as the Cleveland Baseball Club defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 4-1. Bieber won his seventh game of the season as he lasted 5 innings and only allowed 1 run on 5 hits. Bieber has not struck out less than 8 batters in a game this season and this was only third start in which he allowed more than 4 hits.

While Shane Bieber was being his dominant self on the mound the Cleveland offense did just enough to secure the win. Carlos Santana got things starting the in the bottom of the 1st with an RBI double which would score Jose Ramirez. Jordan Luplow would drive in Francisco Lindor in the bottom of the 4th to give Cleveland a two run lead.

Milwaukee would make things interesting in the 5th. Luis Urias and Jace Peterson would both reach base setting up an opportunity for Jacob Nottingham. Nottingham would reach on an infield to single to make it a one run game. Shane Bieber would proceed to strike out Keston Hiura and Christian Yelich to end the threat in his final inning of work.

The 6th inning saw Cleveland extend their lead as Carlos Santana would drive in his second run of the day with an RBI single. Franmil Reyes would ground into a double play but Francisco Lindor would come around to score. Cleveland scoring two runs in the inning would make things a bit more comfortable.

Cleveland’s bullpen had a productive day

After Shane Bieber exited the game, Cleveland got some productive work from their bullpen. Phil Maton, Dominic Leone, and Nick Wittgren would all earn holds as they only allowed 1 hit in 3 innings (2 walks were issued).

Brad Hand would come in the 9th inning to earn the save. Hand would give up a leadoff single to Ryan Braun, giving signs of life to Milwaukee. Tyrone Taylor would fly out for the first out in the inning, casting doubt on the Brewers comeback attempt. Jacob Nottingham came up to bat and Hand would get the game ending double play ball he was seeking.

Cleveland will begin a four game series with the Kansas City Royals starting Monday.
