Domingo Santana signs in Japan

The former Cleveland Baseball Club outfielder has signed a deal with the Tokyo Yakult Swallows.

Domingo Santana is hoping to rebuild his value by heading to Japan. The former Houston Astros, Milwaukee Brewers, Seattle Mariners, and Cleveland Baseball Club outfielder has agreed to a deal with the Tokyo Yakult Swallows of Nippon Professional Baseball.

It was not a great year for Domingo Santana during his 24 games stint in Cleveland. Santana struggled mightily at the plate which inevitably led to being designated for assignment. In 84 plate appearances Santana slashed .157/.298/.286/.583 with 3 doubles, 2 home runs, and 12 RBI. Even with how much Cleveland’s outfield struggled at the plate, this was clearly not good enough to warrant more playing time. Perhaps a change of scenery can revitalize someone who was once a power threat in the lineup.

Cleveland declines options on Hand, Carlos, Domingo

The Cleveland Baseball Club has declined options for three players making them free agents.

Carlos Santana, Brad Hand, and Domingo Santana are all free agents after the Cleveland Baseball Club declined their options. The decision from the club is not surprising due to their high salaries. Cleveland previously placed Hand on waivers, but was not claimed by any team.

Cleveland will pay the buyouts to these three players which will result in their free agent status. The team has also picked up the option for Robert Perez, but he is definitely a trade candidate.

There is the possibility that Cleveland can bring back one or more of these players, but significant discounts would have to be taken on the side of the players. Considering how the financial landscape in the COVID-era this may be this is a possibility.

There are also other players that could be playing elsewhere next season. Most notably Austin Hedges and Carlos Carrasco. There is an almost zero chance that Cleveland commits a high amount of their payroll to the catcher position. In regards to Cookie, he is due $12 million a year over the next two seasons and it is hard to imagine the team paying that figure to a pitcher of his age. The reality is that the Cleveland Baseball Club will be making cuts across the board and this could be just the beginning.

Domingo Santana to Alternate Training Site

The Cleveland Baseball Club have outrighted outfielder Domingo Santana to their Alternate Training Site.

Domingo Santana will remain with the Cleveland Baseball Club as they have outrighted him to the Alternate Training Site.

Cleveland also released infielder Jake Elmore.

Santana did not live up to expectations in this short season. The Cleveland Baseball Club needed him to hit and he did not deliver. This was part of the reason why Cleveland acquired outfielder Josh Naylor in the deal that sent Mike Clevinger to San Diego.

There is the possibility that Domingo Santana could return to the Cleveland Baseball Club at some point, but if other outfielders on the big league roster are hitting that makes it less likely.

Domingo Santana designated for assignment

The Cleveland Baseball Club has designated outfielder Domingo Santana for assingment Monday after a 24 game stint with the team.

Following the blockbuster trade Monday the Cleveland Baseball Club made one internal roster move, designating outfielder Domingo Santana for assignment. The team needed room on their roster after adding Austin Hedges, Cal Quantrill, and Josh Naylor from San Diego.

Domingo Santana was disappointing during his brief stint in Cleveland. In 24 games Santana slashed .157/.298/.286/.583 with 2 home runs, 3 doubles, and 16 RBI. This simply was not what was expected of Santana when Cleveland took a flier on him prior to the season.

Cleveland had two similar situations with Hanley Ramirez and Carlos Gonzalez last season, taking chances on both and buying low. Ramirez would slash .184/.298/.327/.625 with 1 double, 2 home runs, and 8 RBI in 16 games with the team. Gonzalez slashed .210/.282/.276/.558 with 2 home runs, 1 double, and 7 RBI in 30 games. Cleveland moved on from both players during the 2019 season.

Cleveland bounces back to top White Sox 7-1

The Cleveland Baseball Club defeated the Chicago White Sox thanks to a six-run 4th inning and an impressive performance from Zach Plesac.

Cleveland really needed to bounce back from their disappointing performance Friday night, they did just that. Pounding out 10 hits and scoring 7 runs to take down the White Sox in Chicago.

A six-run 4th inning put the game away for Cleveland. Cesar Hernandez and Francisco Lindor would both score on passed balls to get the scoring started. Franmil Reyes hit an absolute bomb to drive in Carlos Santana to give Cleveland a four-run lead.

Jordan Luplow would hit a two-run homer of his own for his first hit of the season, Domingo Santana would score on the play to stretch Cleveland’s lead to 6.

Speaking of Domingo Santana, he also hit his first home run of the season to score Cleveland’s final run.

The offense is great to see, but that’s only half of the story. Zach Plesac had another outstanding performance for Cleveland. Plesac held Chicago scoreless for 6 innings, allowing 5 hits, 1 walk, and striking out 7 along the way. The second-year pitcher kept Cleveland in the game while their offense was struggling early in the game.

Adam Cimber would relieve Plesac in the 7th and struck out two batters.

The 8th inning belonged to Cam Hill and Yoan Moncada hit a solo home run for Chicago’s only run of the day. Hilll allowed 2 hits and 1 walk in his only inning of work.

Phil Maton worked the 9th, allowing 1 hit and striking out 1 to end the game and secure the win for Cleveland.

The third and final game of the series will be on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball at 7:00 P.M. as Cleveland looks to win their second straight game against Chicago.

Cleveland powered by 2 HR’s from Ramirez in 9-2 win

The Cleveland Baseball Club defeated the visiting Kansas City Royals by a score of 9-2 in the final game of their three game series.

If there is one thing that the Cleveland Baseball Club needs this season it is Jose Ramirez to look like Jose Ramirez. Good news, Jose Ramirez does indeed look like Jose Ramirez. Ramirez went 3-5 on the day which included two home runs. Ramirez’ three-run home run in the 4th was Cleveland’s first of the season.

The Cleveland third baseman also drove in four runs and scored four times. These are the types of performances that will need to be commonplace if the team is to return to the postseason.

Domingo Santana got into the hit column as he went 3-3 with a walk and a run scored. Santana was absolutely crushing the ball as only one of his three hits had a sub 104.3 MPH exit velocity.

Cesar Hernandez got things started at the top of the order, a welcome sight for Cleveland. Hernandez got into some bad habits in his final season with Philadelphia and it appears he has reverted to his former self. Cleveland’s leadoff man had two hits and scored twice. Hernandez is looking to get on base and not hit the ball over the wall. Getting on base for the likes of Jose Ramirez, Francisco Lindor, and Carlos Santana to drive him will be essential for the offense. If Hernandez can keep this up good things will follow.

The man on the mound played a huge role too

It was not only the players in the batters box who made an impact today, it was a guy on the mound, someone everyone could root for, Carlo Carrasco. Carrasco made his first start since last season before being diagnosed with Leukemia and he was fantastic. Cookie pitched six innings striking out 10 while allowing two runs on five hits and walking one. Cleveland could not have asked for more from their third starter.

Oliver Perez, Dominic Leone, and Cameron Hill combined for three innings, striking five. Two baserunners did reach (a hit and a walk) during Leone’s appearance in the 8th. Hill made his MLB debut in 9th and did not allow a baserunner.

With the win, Cleveland is 2-1 and is waiting the arrival of the Chicago White Sox who come to town for a three game set starting Monday.

The Cleveland Indians were not able to complete thir rally as they come up short against the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-5 in Goodyear, Arizona.

The Cleveland Indians lost their second straight game in Arizona as they lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers by a score of 6-5. Los Angeles jumped all over the Tribe in two key innings which was the difference in the game.

Hitters of note

Francisco Lindor went 2-3. continuing his impressive spring, his only out being a strikeout. Lindor is slashing .500/.500/.1.000 in Arizona.

Jose Ramirez went 1-3 on the day, striking out once.

Domingo Santana’s only hit of the day was a surprising two-run triple. Santana has two career triples in 492 MLB games.

Bobby Bradley hit his first home run of the spring in the 8th inning, a two-run shot which brought the Indians within one.

Pitchers of note

Jefry Rodriguez got the start, but struggled mightily. Rodriguez allowed three runs on one hit while walking two and striking out one. All of the damage came off a three-run homer off the bat of Kike Hernandez.

Two runs came around to score while Nick Wittgren was on the mound, although only one was earned. Wittgren gave up one hit, walked one, and struck out another.

The Indians will take on the White Sox again Friday at 3:05 P.M.

Indians top White Sox 10-2 in Goodyear

The Cleveland Indians played their first home game of Spring Training and defeated the Chicago White Sox by a score of 10-2 in Goodyear.

Well this is nice little bounce back after Monday’s bullpen collapse. The Cleveland Indians were able to handle the Chicago White Sox fairly easily, winning by an eight run margin.

Hitters of note

Francisco Lindor was at the top of the order again, going 1-3 with a run scored in the first inning. It was the first of many runs for the Indians on the day.

Cesar Hernandez got a look at the second spot in the order due to Oscar Mercado receive the day off. Hernandez would go 0-2 with walk and a run scored.

Jose Ramirez is on absolute tear in Arizona. Jose went 2-3 with two runs scored.

Franmil Reyes continues his strong first Spring Training with the Indians, driving in two runs on an RBI double in the 2nd inning. This was one of two doubles on the day for Reyes.

Domingo Santana reached on a surprising infield single in the first inning, which gave Cleveland a 3-0 lead at the time. This was Domingo’s only hit of the day.

Indians top prospect Nolan Jones replaced Jordan Luplow in the game, giving him an opportunity to showcase his abilities. While he did not register a hit, he did walk twice which is to be expected. Jones walks quite often, 96 times in the minors last season. Jones has an excellent eye at the plate and this isa skill that should transition well when eventually makes it to the big leagues.

Pitchers of note

Shane Bieber got the start for the Tribe. Bieber pitched only one inning and did not allow a baserunner. Bieber picked up the win for his lone inning of work.

Brad Hand would come on after Bieber, walking one batter and striking out another.

An interesting 1.2 innings from Scott Moss followed. Moss struck out three batters but also allowed two hits and walked two others.

Chicago’s only runs of the day came off of Kyle Dowdy in the 7th inning. Dowdy allowed two hits and walked one batter on the day.

Cleveland will face the San Diego Padres Wednesday at 3:10 P.M.

Indians outfield position battles

Advertisements

The Cleveland Indians will be positioning certain players in certain outfield spots this spring. This should help the team figure out exactly how their roster will be put together come Opening Day.

Franmil Reyes

Whether or not Franmil Reyes would actually play in the outfield this season was up for debate until fairly recently. A combination of dropping 18 pounds and the signing of Domingo Santana points in the direction of Reyes seeing a good amount of time in the field. Corner outfield to be exact. Reyes will work in both right and left field this spring to gauge his ability as an everyday outfielder.

Bradley Zimmer

It was not too long ago that Bradley Zimmer was an exciting player to watch in the Indians outfield. Inconsistent performances at the plate combined with injuries have put his career on pause. Center field is now occupied by Oscar Mercado and others are under consideration for outfield spots. Zimmer will work in center and right field. Being a left handed outfielder could help his case. The only other options in that regard are Jake Bauers and Tyler Naquin. Naquin’s season debut could be delayed and Bauers is not necessarily a lock to make the big league roster.

Greg Allen

Greg Allen will have every opportunity to make the roster as a switch-hitting outfielder. Cleveland will use him in all three outfield spots this spring. The reality is Allen is someone who shouldn’t start more than twice a week. Allen could make the team as a reserve outfielder, but anything more than that is a cause for concern.

Jake Bauers

This is an interesting situation. Like Bradley Zimmer, Jake Bauers is a left handed hitter. Bauers will see time in left field, but also has the ability to play first base. This versatility could lead to Bauers making the roster in one way or another. Having the option to rotate outfield, first base, and the DH positions should be very appealing to Terry Francona. Bauers is the youngest outfielder of this group and has proven enough in AAA, the jump in performance for Bauers could come fairly soon.

Domingo Santana

This is Cleveland’s other option that they are looking at in regards to left field. Domingo Santana can play the field, but probably shouldn’t. Santana may be better off as a designated hitter while players such as Franmil Reyes and Jake Bauers see time in left.
