Four Guardians win Gold Gloves

The Cleveland Guardians have four Gold Glove Award Winners.

Five members of the Cleveland Guardians were finalists for a Gold Glove and four ended up coming away with the award. Andres Gimenez, Shane Bieber, Myles Straw, and Steven Kwan won a Gold Glove at their respective positions. The lone finalist not to win was third baseman Jose Ramirez.

Defense was a trademark of the Cleveland Guardians this season so the MLB high four Gold Glove winners is hardly a surprise. In addition to leading all of baseball in Gold Gloves, this was a franchise record for the Guardians.

Notes about the winners

Steven Kwan is just the second rookie in team history to win a Gold Glove, the first being Sandy Alomar. Kwan is also the with rookie outfielder to win the award, the most recent being Luis Robert in 2020.

Myles Straw joins Kwan as the first Cleveland outfielders to win a Gold Glove since Grady Sizemore in 2008.

Andres Gimenez is the second Guardians second baseman to win a Gold Glove in the last three seasons (Cesar Hernandez 2020).

Shane Bieber is the first Cleveland pitcher to win a Gold Glove since Rick Manning in 1976.

Indians: Lindor, Perez win Gold Gloves

The Cleveland Indians have two players who have won Gold Gloves. Shorstop Francisco Lindor with his second and catcher Roberto Perez with his first.

Francisco Lindor is one of the best shortstops in all of baseball. Not just offensively, but in the field as well. The Indians shortstop came away with his second Gold Glove.

There was some belief that Angels shortstop Andrelton Simmons would win the award. Simmons is arguably the best defensive shortstop in baseball. However, the voters thought differently and voted for Francisco Lindor.

In addition to his first Gold Glove, Lindor previously won a Platinum Glove. Given to the American League’s best defensive player in 2016.

Lindor is not the only Indians player to come away with a Gold Glove. Roberto Perez won his first career Gold Glove in his first year as the primary catcher.

Roberto Perez stepped into the primary role after the trade of Yan Gomes this past offseason. Perez was able to prove the Indians front office made the correct move with an excellent season behind the plate. Not that this is relevant to this discussion, but Perez also had a good year with the bat as well.

Francisco Lindor and Roberto Perez are clearly two of the best defensive players in baseball. There are others on the roster who are good defensively, but not among the best. In time that could change.
