Reds trade rumor: Cincinnati willing to trade Jonathan India

Advertisements

In what came as a surprise to most, the Cincinnati Reds are reportedly willing to trade second baseman Jonathan India. This is a according to a report from MLB Network’s Mark Feinsand. Feinsand had the following to say in regards to what he is hearing.

“they are willing to trade 2021 NL ROY Jonathan India for young, controllable starting pitching per sources. Cincinnati has a glut of young infielders (Steer, De La Cruz, McLain, Encarnacion-Strand) with more on the way (Marte, Arroyo, Collier)”.

It is not exactly shocking to see the Reds be looking for young, controllable starting pitching. The Reds are a team in the mix for postseason play with the fourth-best record in the National League. Finding a way to upgrade a pitching staff that has given up the fifth-most home runs should be a priority. Even if that means moving a player like India to do so.

Jonathan India is a very talented player and is still yet to enter his arbitration years (they begin in 2024). Cincinnati should be able to get a pretty good haul for the 26-year old if a trade indeed happens.

The important takeaway here is that the report states “willing to trade” and not looking to trade, as there is a difference. This seems to be like the team is floating this out there as an option should a team come calling with an acceptable package. Whether or not India remains in Cincinnati appears to depend on how desperate a contender is for infield help. All it takes is something to happen between now and the deadline for a team to suddenly meet what is a lofty, yet predictable demand.

Guardians – Reds postponed Wednesday

The fourth and final game between the Cleveland Guardians and Cincinnati Reds will have to wait one more day as Wednesday’s contest was postponed due to weather. The game will be made up on Thursday at 1:10 P.M. as it is a mutual off day for both clubs.

Wednesday’s postponement is the fifth postponed home game of the season for the Guardians, an astonishing number for a team that has played just 13 games at Progressive Field while they have had 21 road affairs.

Cleveland won the first two games of the season series with Cincinnati’s extra-innings win Tuesday giving the Reds their first win of the year. The two wins earlier in the year were enough for the Guardians to retain the Ohio Cup.

This extra day of rest for Cleveland comes at a time when they are experiencing some organizational shuffling. Three of the seven coaches in health and safety protools returned to the club Wednesday. Meanwhile the only player in said protocols, Josh Naylor, could make his return to the lineup Friday.

Cleveland retains Ohio Cup after 9-3 beat down

Advertisements

The Cleveland Baseball Club defeated the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 9-3 as they retained the Ohio Cup for the seventh consecutive year.

If the Cleveland Baseball Club was going to retain the Ohio Cup for another year they were going to need their offense to step up. Luckily that is just what happened. Cleveland would collect 11 hits and five walks as they defeated the Cincinnati Reds 9-3.

Things did not appear that they would go Cleveland’s way early after some shaky pitching from Sam Hentges. Cincinnati would take an early 1-0 lead on a Joey Votto RBI single. The Reds lead would not last as Cleveland fought back with a vengeance beginning in the bottom of the 1st.

Myles Straw would score on a RBI groundout to tie the game in the bottom half of the first frame. While Cleveland only scored one run in the 1st, they were just getting started.

Wilson Ramos would break the tie with a two-run homer in the bottom of the 2nd.

The 3rd inning would see Cleveland’s lead extend to three as Jose Ramirez would drive in a run on a RBI triple. Ramirez would score later in the inning on a RBI groundout.

The very next inning saw Amed Rosario come through with a RBI triple of his own with Myles Straw scoring on the play. Rosario would finish the game 4-5, his  major league leading fourth four-hit game of the season.

After just barely missing a home run the previous inning, Jose Ramirez would deposit a ball into the right field stands to extend Cleveland’s lead to seven.

History from Bradley Zimmer

After Cincinnati got a run back in the 5th, it was Bradley Zimmer who came up in the 7th and crushed an absolute bomb to dead center field.

This home run from Zimmer would travel 471 feet, the longest by a Cleveland player in the stat cast era (2015)

The Reds would add one more run in the 9th, but it was of a no consequence. Cleveland would go on to finish the game and come away with a six-run victory.

Cleveland is set to begin a three-game series with the Oakland Athletics Tuesday. The team still has very faint postseason hopes that could be completely dead or still alive following the series with the Wild Card leader

Ohio Cup outcome

Entering Monday’s make-up game with the Cincinnati Reds, the Cleveland Baseball Club was on the brink of doing something that they have not done since 2014, losing the Ohio Cup. The last time the Ohio Cup went to Cincinnati was in 2014. Since then it has been Cleveland winning the season series five out of seven times with two ties (the tie goes to the previous winner).

Cleveland bounces back to take down Reds

The Cleveland Baseball Club pounded out 11 hits and scored nine runs as they bounced back to defeat the visiting Cincinnati Reds.

It was a much better time out for the Cleveland Baseball Club Saturday as they came back from being no-hit the day before and came away with a 9-2 victory against the Cincinnati Reds. Cleveland did not have a problem when facing Luis Castillo as they managed to score 6 runs (4 earned) on 5 hits in 4 innings off the Reds starter. To say they were a bit happier to be facing Castillo in this contest is an understatement. Cleveland would score three more runs just two innings later off of Ryan Hendrix.

Cesar Hernandez led the Cleveland batters in the RBI department on the day, tripling with the bases loaded leading to Jake Bauers, Austin Hedges, and Andres Gimenez. Speaking of Bauers, the Cleveland first baseman went 2-4 in the contest as he is becoming a little more consistent at the plate recently. Josh Naylor went 2-3 with two runs scored as he is starting to heat up at the plate. Jose Ramirez also had two hits, going 2-5 with 2 RBI.

As far as pitching is concerned, it was Aaron Civale who had yet another impressive performance. Civale allowed 1 run on 5 hits with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts as he was able to keep the Reds bats in check. Civale’s ERA now sits at 2.91 on the season and he continues to be one of Cleveland’s most consistent arms.

Cleveland no-hit again in loss to Reds

The Cleveland Baseball Club was no-hit for the second time this season as they lost to the Cincinnati Red at home in a 3-0 loss.

Poor Zach Plesac. This is the second time this season that the Cleveland Baseball Club has been no-hit in one of his starts. While the loss is not on him, it was another expected lackluster effort at the plate for the team. Plesac was at least able to make it out of the 1st inning this time. In fact, Plesac lasted 8 innings and did not allow a run on 3 hits with 7 strikeouts.

Reds pitcher Wade Miley was outstanding as he kept the Cleveland offense in check all game long. Miley struck out eight Cleveland batters and walked one in his spectacular performance. This was the second time this season that the Cleveland offense found themselves in a situation where they were unable to get a hit.

The issue arose in the 9th inning when Terry Francona called upon Emmanuel Clase. Tito chose to go with Clase in a non-save situation and things unfolded exactly the way everyone expected them to. Clase gave up three hits which proceeded to three runs coming across to score (two earned) as he failed to record an out. While the rules about using a closer in a non-save situation are not written in stone, this tactic has be used very carefully. It did not work out well for Clase or Cleveland as those runs that scored were the difference in the game. This is not to put the blame all on Clase, the offense still was not able to hit. Even if Clase gets out of the inning unscathed they still were not touching Miley.

Cleveland will be looking for a rebound performance in Game 2 Saturday at 6:10 P.M.

Zach Plesac starts for Cleveland at home vs. Reds

The final battle of The Ohio Cup begins Friday at Progressive Field.

The Ohio Cup began back in April with the Cincinnati Reds taking two of the first three games of the season series. Cleveland needs to duplicate that performance this weekend in order to retain control of The Ohio Cup. They will begin their quest Friday with Zach Plesac on the mound.

This will be the seventh start of the season for Zach Plesac and overall the returns have not been great. Plesac has an ERA of 4.78 the season, which is higher than his career number in this area of 3.55. There were two starts which really impacted Plesac’s numbers, both losses to the Chicago White Sox where 12 runs came across 5.2 innings. However, Plesac has only allowed 5 runs total in 20.2 innings in five other starts. Zach Plesac will be hoping to continue trending in the right direction this time around.

Starting opposite Zach Plesac will be Wade Miley. Miley is in the midst of surprisingly resurgent season. In 5 starts this season Miley has a 2.67 ERA and 0.963 WHIP with a 6.3 K/9, the lowest mark since his rookie year. Miley has allowed 2 runs on 5 hits in consecutive outings, coming away with a win and loss along the way. Prior to that it was Cleveland who scored 4 runs on 5 hits, the first time that Miley allowed runs on the year.

First pitch for Zach Plesac is scheduled for 7:10 P.M. at Progressive Field

Shane Bieber strikes out 13 to stop skid

Advertisements

The Cleveland Baseball Club ace stepped up when he was needed most by striking out 13 batters in a much needed 6-3 win

After losing Saturday under some less than desirable circumstances, the Cleveland Baseball Club needed a win in the worst way. Enter Shane Bieber. Bieber was absolutely dominant as he mowed down batter after batter for the Cleveland Baseball Club. Shane Bieber was so good in fact that he tied Nolan Ryan for the most strikeouts by a pitcher in their first four appearances.

Whenever a player is mentioned in the same breath as Nolan Ryan that is some elite company and that is Shane Bieber. This was not the only notable accomplishment for Bieber in the game. By striking out 10+ in his fourth straight game, Shane Bieber is the first pitcher with 10+ strikeouts in his first four starts since 1893.

One more fun fact for Shane Bieber in his dominant start. Bieber’s 8 games with 10 or more strikeouts is the most in baseball since the start of the 2020 campaign.

How about some offense?

In order for the start from Shane Bieber to matter, the offense was going to have to do their part. Good news, it did. The Cleveland bats were able to launch three home runs in the contest to give Bieber the run support he needed. Jose Ramirez struck in the 1st inning.

Roberto Perez would club a three-run shot in the 4th to extend Cleveland’s lead to four.

In the 7th it was Jordan Luplow’s turn as he hit a two-run shot to give Cleveland a few insurance runs.

With the 6-3 win in Cincinnati, Cleveland stopped a two-game losing skid and was able to get back over .500 on the year. Monday is an off day as they will return to action at home when they host the Chicago White Sox.
