The Cleveland Browns have activated eight players from the reserve/COVID-19 list

With the Cleveland Browns needing to win out to make the playoffs they are going to need everyone they can to make that possible. The good news is that Cleveland activated eight players from the reserve/COVID-19 list including multiple starters.

The biggest names here are obviously Jedrick Wills, Troy Hill, Ronnie Harrison, Kareem Hunt, and Jadeveon Clowney. Being able to add these five players back into the mix while they attempt the near impossible will help their cause.

The Browns also placed Elijah Lee on the reserve/COVID-19 list while activating Nate Meadors from the practice squad reserve.

Browns place six more on reserve/COVID-19 list

The Cleveland Browns have placed six more players on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

After the Cleveland Browns had to place eight players on the reserve/COVID-19 list, six more have been placed on the list. As reported earlier, Baker Mayfield tested positive and now the rest of the players have been revealed. John Johnson II, Malik McDowell, Troy Hill, Ifeadi Odenigbo, and practice squad player Nate Meadors.

This is in addition to head coach Kevin Stefanski also testing positive. With the new round of positive tests the Browns have 11 starters who are on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

There is still a chance for vaccinated players to play Saturday, but two negative tests 24 hours apart will be required by 4 P.M. Friday. Considering the timing of these tests they are long shots to play Saturday and that could prove problematic. At some point when enough players are unable to play, the gap in talent closes and makes what should have been a winnable game one where they could very well lose.

Troy Hill expected to miss Week 15

The Cleveland Browns may be without one of their key defensive backs when they face the Las Vegas Raiders Saturday.

In addition to the likely possibility the Cleveland Browns will miss Kareem Hunt in Week 15, Troy Hill is also not expected to play against the Raiders on Saturday.

Troy Hill has been relied upon several times this season as the Browns have seen multiple defensive backs miss games this season. While Hill has missed a couple games as well, Cleveland has been able to sort of utilize a rotation to cover up for their absences. The likely absence of Hill combined with the unknown status of Greg Newsome could present a problem. Raiders wide receiver Hunter Renfrow has three straight games with eight or more receptions for 100 or more yards.

Renfow is in the middle of a hot streak and could be facing a Browns secondary without two of their better cornerbacks. While the Browns are expected to win on Saturday, Troy Hill not playing makes it a just bit more difficult to accomplish.

Defense, Chubb lead Browns to 41-16 victory

The Cleveland Browns came away with a much needed victory when they needed it most.

This was a game that if the Cleveland Browns lost that everything would have spiraled out of control. Luckily they were able to gather themselves during a tumultuous week, defeating the upstart Cincinnati Bengals in dominant fashion 41-16.

Denzel Ward stepped up early

After it appeared that Joe Burrow was going to have his way with the Browns defense all game long, Denzel Ward stepped in front of Ja’Maar Chase, picked the ball off and took it to the house, giving the Browns an early 7-0 lead.

Troy Hill made Browns history

Troy Hill was the first Cleveland Browns defensive back in team history to record three sacks in a game. The sacks were well timed and made a huge difference over the course of the game.

Nick Chubb did Nick Chubb things

While Nick Chubb only had 14 carries in the game, he made every one of them count. Chubb finished with 137 yards and two touchdowns with a long run of 70 yards. This, in conjunction with the defense, is exactly the complimentary performance the team needed to win this game.

Baker Mayfield made some throws

Baker Mayfield started the game 7-8 for 121 yards and one touchdown. That touchdown was to a wide open Donovan Peoples-Jones. The play was exciting, but at the same time completing a pass to a wide open receiver streaking down the middle of the field is expected from an average quarterback.

Mayfield would throw his second touchdown pass late in the game to David Njoku.

Overall Mayfield was fine, a few good throws mixed in with some less than stellar plays. Consistency is still an issue over the course of the game and that will need to fixed as the season progresses. Sunday’s win was a nice start, but there is a lot of work to do. At the end of the day it was a dominant defensive performance and a strong running game that allowed Mayfield to operate in this manner and still win.

PFF ranks three Browns DB’s among NFL’s best

Pro Football Focus ranks three Cleveland Browns defenders among the best in the NFL.

There is one thing that everyone knew about the Cleveland Browns defense this offseason, they needed to get better. That is why it is great to see high praise for two new additions to the secondary. Pro Football Focus released their top 32 safeties and top 10 slot corners in the league and there are three Browns defensive backs on the two lists.

John Johnson ranks third among safeties, ranking only behind Justin Simmons and Harrison Smith. Johnson is one of, if not the biggest addition to the Browns defense. The difference that will be seen with Johnson lining up rather than the previous cast of characters will be huge.

Also appearing on the safety list at 30 is Ronnie Harrison. Harrison was more of a part time player for the Browns last season, but when he was on the field he did make plays. It is quite impressive to see Harrison make this list considering he only appeared in 30% of snaps last season.

The other new addition for the Browns that made a list was Troy Hill. Hill was named fifth-best slot corner after making the move in side with Los Angeles last season. There is a considerable difference with Hill when he lines up inside versus outside and adding him to a cornerback room that already has Denzel Ward and just added Greg Newsome in the draft.

The Cleveland Browns head coach heaped praise on the newly signed corner.

On Monday, Kevin Stefanski did not hesitate to compliment the play of new Browns cornerback Troy Hill. Stefanski praised the the type of player he was with the Rams and talk about his role in Cleveland.

Troy Hill figures to be a prominent figure in the Browns secondary this season. Along with Denzel Ward and the also now former Ram John Johnson, Hill should be part of a Browns secondary that takes massive step forward this season.

Browns defense gets the help they need

The defense for the Cleveland Browns was a major issue last season and the front office has made an effort to address that side of the ball.

Last season the front office of the Cleveland Browns focused on improving the offensive side of the ball while making short-term buy-low type moves on the defense. Most of the moves on defense did not work out, but the good news is that they are using a similar approach on defense that they used on offense last season.

The Browns have already made two multi-year deals with John Johnson and Troy Hill. Cleveland also signed Takkarist McKinley, Anthony Walker, and Malik Jackson to one-year deals. These signings provide Cleveland with some options beyond next season on defense while keeping their flexibility to make future long-term investments.

Johnson and Hill should help solidify the Browns secondary and compliment what players the Browns already have. Adding the former Rams duo to Denzel Ward and Ronnie Harrison gives Cleveland a much better defensive backfield than last season. Grant Delpit and Greedy Williams both missed all of last season and they could contribute. The thing is that due to their injuries Cleveland must act if they are not on the roster. Make additions as if they do not exist and if they do contribute that is just a huge bonus.

The Browns defensive line got a huge boost with the additions of McKinley and Jackson. One of the signings by itself would not have done much, but both together allows each player to fill a role. It also takes pressure off of either player to perform as a starter and put together solid rotation to play alongside Myles Garrett.

Cleveland did re-sign Malcolm Smith, but that move is not as important as adding Walker from the Colts. Smith is a fine rotational/sub linebacker, the issue is that he is not a starter. Walker has played 66% or more defensive snaps over the past three seasons and that is exactly what the Browns need. Someone to come in, play the majority of snaps and make a ton of tackles. Check, check, and check.

Another defensive signing or two and a mostly defensive draft and this offseason for the Browns would go from good to great. Considering the way Cleveland has handled things so far shows that this could be how things are handled moving forward.

Troy Hill signs four-year deal with Browns

The Cleveland Browns have added another valuable price to their secondary.

Just yesterday the Cleveland Browns deal with John Johnson became official, now they are signing one of his teammates from the Rams Troy Hill. The Browns and Hill have agreed to terms on a four-year $24 million deal per reports.

This is huge addition for the Browns defense. It is clear that the team identified that their defense from last season needed major upgrades and their strategy of one-year deals the previous year did not work. Adding Troy Hill to the mix in addition to John Johnson instantly upgrades this group. No longer should the Browns be giving up career passing days to opposing quarterbacks. Instead they may be able to force more turnovers and not rely on the turnover luck gods to come their way.

Troy Hill has seven career interceptions, all coming in the last three seasons. Additionally, Hill has 29 pass defenses in his career along with 3 fumble recoveries and 1 forced fumble. Hill now being in the mix gives the Browns a reliable option opposite Denzel Ward. This also puts Greedy Williams in a role where he does not have to be on the field every play, a role which may suit him considerably better than that of his rookie season. The Browns defense seems to be taking the strides that the offense did last season. Hopefully the on field performance follows suit and becomes an asset and not a liability.

Update

The numbers of the deal for Troy Hill are reportedly not what they seem. It turns out that the deal is for two-years $9 million with the possibility of that number reaching $10 million according to Mary Kay Cabot. The final two years of the deal are voidable which only makes this deal a much better deal for the Browns from a money standpoint.
