Browns should be ready to make deals

The 2022-23 NFL season is essentially over for the Cleveland Browns and they should be prepared to move some players for draft picks.

At 2-5 the Browns season is basically over as it is highly unlikely they navigate one of the toughest schedules over the rest of the season to make the postseason. Because of this they should start shopping multiple players, not just Kareem Hunt and Greedy Williams. Reports do indicate that the Browns have too high expectations for a trade return for Hunt, it is a good starting point negotiation-wise and that process should expand to other players.

Looking at players on expiring contracts is the ideal place to start when it comes to potential trades. Jack Conklin, Jadeveon Clowney, D’Ernest Johnson, Chris Hubbard, and Sione Takitaki could help contending teams. Taven Bryan is also another player on an expiring deal, but considering his lackluster play he may not draw any interest. Deion Jones will also be a free agent when the season is over. Considering he has played in just one game and was just traded to Cleveland they may not be willing to move off of him so quickly. The future of all these players in Cleveland seems murky at best. Getting something over nothing for them would be a wise path to follow.

Players not on expiring deals

If the Browns really want to get frisky they can unload the likes of John Johnson and Grant Delpit. Johnson has not lived up to expectations since signing prior to last season. The high salary figure for Johnson is a big obstacle that may prevent genuine trade interest. Delpit has been flat out awful and pretty much unplayable making it difficult to move him. While trading one or both is a downgrade for now, it may be better the long run to part ways.

The NFL trade deadline is unpredictable and the way the Browns operate currently can be at times. There is a real possibility that none of the names here are moved. The possibility also exists that they could move multiple players to shake things up a bit and churn the roster.

Browns: Delpit, Harrison test positive for COVID-19

The two Cleveland Browns defensive backs have both tested positive for COVID-19.

Add more two more names to the list of Cleveland Browns that have tested positive for COVID-19. Grant Delpit and Ronnie Harrison have both tested positive Thursday.

This is in addition to quarterback Case Keenum who also tested positive Thursday. The Browns defense is currently down a large amount of player which will prove to be an issue when they face the Raiders Saturday.

Observations from Browns 31-21 win over Texans

The Cleveland Browns won their first game of the season by holding off the Houston Texans 31-21. Getting the first win of the season is great, but there are some takeaways that need to mentioned and kept in mind for the rest of the season.

Winning is great, but game was a lot closer than it should have been

This should have been a get right game for the Browns. In the past this was the type of game where the visiting team comes in, blows the doors off of Cleveland, and gets back on track for the next few games. Unfortunately this game was a lot closer than it should have been against a Texans team that does not have high expectations for the season.

Outcome very well could have been different if Tyrod Taylor does not leave due to injury

Tyrod Taylor was moving the ball well and was very effective in the first half. There is a real chance that the final outcome is entirely different if Taylor did not have to leave the game with his injury. Cleveland’s defense had trouble with Houston’s offense for the entire first half.

Defense is bad, like really bad

As mentioned above, the defense could not stop Tyrod Taylor in the first half. Davis Mills even looked okay at times, leading one successful scoring drive and another that resulted in a missed field goal.

Additionally, Myles Garrett and Jadeveon Clowney were pretty much non-factors in this game. The only time they were really mentioned was when the broadcasting team said that they have not done much of anything.

As of now it appears that the Browns defense performance in the 1st half of their loss to the Chiefs was more about Kansas City being off rather than the defense stepping up.

Debut of Grant Delpit

Now for a positive defensive note, Grant Delpit looked good. Delpit made a couple of plays while only appearing in 43% of defensive snaps, but there is some hope here. Again, health will be a concern with him moving forward, but Delpit making plays in his first NFL game is encouraging.

Browns passing offense struggled despite deceiving numbers

Baker Mayfield was 19-21 for 213 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. The 90% completion percentage is impressive, but deceiving. A lot of Mayfield’s throws were not far down the field and most of his yards came after the pass was completed, most notably on Demetric Felton’s 33-yard touchdown on a screen pass. While Baker executed and that’s great, there are some much larger issues at hand.

Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry were missed big time

When Jarvis Landry exited the game after the second play the passing offense did not have a legitimate threat in the passing game. This led to a lot of shorter passes from Mayfield and his 19-21 performance. The fact of the matter is that without Landry or Odell Beckham Jr. the passing game is very much unimpressive. Those who have been standing on mountaintops screaming for the team to move one or both players got a good long look at reality without the best receivers on the team. Currently without Beckham or Landry in the lineup the passing game is very much pedestrian at best.

Not enough Nick Chubb

Nick Chubb finished the game with 11 carries for 95 yards and one touchdown. In a game without the two best pass catchers available it would have made a lot more sense to hand Chubb the ball a hell of a lot more. To compare, Kareem Hunt carried the ball 13 times for 51 yards, an interesting split to say the least.

Limiting Chubb could be due to wanting to preserve him for later in the season when the Browns are hopefully in the playoffs. Well, in order to get back to the playoffs they need to win games earlier in the season to get there. While the Browns did win this one, the offense could have used the boost it would have gotten if they handed Chubb the ball more. Perhaps more attempts from Chubb results in the lopsided win it should have been and many expected it to be.

Grant Delpit comments on snowfall

The Cleveland Browns rookie joined some of his teammates in commenting on the overnight snowfall in Northeast Ohio.

Jedricks Wills Jr., and Ronnie Harrison were not the only Cleveland Browns players to make some news in the snow. Rookie safety Grant Delpit posted a video on Instagram which has since been posted on Twitter.

There is nothing better than new Browns players experiencing their first snow in Cleveland.

Logan Ryan to the Cleveland Browns?

The Cleveland Browns have shown interest in former New England Patriots and Tennessee Titans defensive back Logan Ryan.

Logan Ryan to the Cleveland Browns? It is not out of the realm of possibilities according to Mary Kay Cabot. Cabot reported that the team has shown interest in the free agent defensive back.

The Browns could use some help in the defensive backfield. Second round pick Grant Delpit suffered a season-ending injury and that leaves the Cleveland secondary pretty thin. This also puts the team in a position where some players are playing a larger role than they should be.

The interesting twist in all of this is that Logan Ryan recently hired a new agent, Joel Segal.

Something that Cabot mentioned in her report is that Segal also represents Delpit. This could play a factor in whether to not the two sides reach a deal.

Either way this would be interesting considering what happened when Logan Ryan leaped into the Dawg Pound last season.

Earl Thomas is not the answer for Cleveland

Former Seattle Seahawks and Baltimore Ravens safety Earl Thomas is not the answer for the Cleveland Browns defense.

With Grant Delpit’s injury the Cleveland Browns defense may need to find some help. While some may point to Earl Thomas as answer, Cleveland should take a pass on the recently released safety.

This is not a talent issue with Earl Thomas, nobody is arguing his talent. This is a locker room issue. There have been multiple stories about Thomas and his clashes with Baltimore dating back to last season. The most recent incident being a fight during practice this past week which led to his release. Baltimore decided that they would be a better team without Thomas in their secondary and Cleveland should take note.

The issues in Baltimore were not the first time that Earl Thomas clashed with a well regarded organization, things did not end well for Thomas in Seattle either. That is two teams that have good cultures and are respected for how they go about their business that moved on. The Browns are far from being anywhere close to Seattle or Baltimore and that is the issue here. Cleveland needs to realize that they are so far away from being on that level they need to take into account that teams better on and off the field essentially said thanks, but no thanks twice since the end of the 2018-19 season.

Cleveland needs to look at two better organizations from top to bottom and follow their lead.

Grant Delpit tears achilles in practice

Cleveland Browns rookie safety Grant Delpit tore his achilles in practice Monday which will end the second round pick’s season prematurely.

The worst fears of the Cleveland Browns have been confirmed. Rookie Grant Delpit has tore his achilles ending his season.

Delpit was carted off the practice field Monday before participating in the team drill. As soon as the injury occurred a serious injury seemed to very much possible. Delpit grabbed his leg after the injury and was pounding the ground while on his stomach.

This is bad news for the Browns secondary. This unit was thin to begin with and now it is even thinner. Delpit was expected to be a starter and losing a starter is never good, especially one that is highly regarded. Cleveland will have to hope for others to play above their skill level for the safety position to not be a complete liability.

Browns: Grant Delpit carted off practice field

Cleveland Browns rookie safety Grant Delpit was carted off the practice field Monday after suffering an apparent leg injury.

The Cleveland Browns defense may have lost a key contributor for the upcoming season as Grant Delpit was carted off the practice field Monday.

The injury occurred before the team drill.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo added that Delpit was grabbing his leg before exiting the practice field.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the team is having Delpit undergo testing for a possible achilles injury.

If the injury is serious that would mean an already thin secondary group would be even thinner. The Browns would be without their second round draft pick in Delpit and have to rely on players who probably should not have full time roles at this point in time (Karl Joseph, Andrew Sendejo).
