Cleveland drops final game of series to Tigers 7-4

Advertisements

The Cleveland Baseball Club dropped the final game of their three game series with the Detroit Tigers by a score of 7-4.

It was another short start for Cleveland starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco as he struggled yet again in Sunday’s 7-4 loss. Carrasco allowed 4 runs on 7 hits and 1 walk in just 3.1 innings. Two home runs in the 4th inning chased Carrasco from the game as Detroit took a 4-1 lead.

Things did not get much better as Detroit would score three more times off of Logan Allen. Allen would allow 3 runs on 5 hits and 4 walks in 4.2 innings. Surprisingly the only Cleveland pitcher to not give up a run was Dominic Leone. Leone gave up runs to Detroit in his previous two appearances.

While the score looked close, it is not an accurate depiction of how this game went. Cleveland’s bats were kept in check as they only managed 6 hits in the game. Cesar Hernandez hit a leadoff home rum in the bottom of the 1st to provide some early hope that was all for naught. Cleveland would get a few hits here and there, but they were not able to put together a legitimate threat until the 9th inning. By then the game was all but over as the Tigers held a six-run lead.

Jordan Luplow and Mike Freeman would walk to start the 9th. After Yu Chang struck out looking Greg Allen would hit a three-run homer, his second hit of the season. The Tigers would make a pitching change and Jose Cisnero would earn his first save of the season.

Cleveland needs their offense to wake up as they begin a three game series with the Minnesota Twins starting Monday. If they are unable to bust out of this season long slump it will be a long series against the current division leader.

Carlos Santana leads Cleveland to win over Pirates

A clutch home run in the 10th inning from Carlos Santana propeled the Clevland Baseball Club to a win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Carlos Santana drove in 5 of Cleveland’s 6 runs on Tuesday night and powered the team to a 6-3 victory in extra-innings over the Pittsburgh Pirates The first two runs came in the 3rd inning with a bases-loaded two-RBI double from the Cleveland first baseman. After a Franmil Reyes sacrifice fly to make it 3-1 Cleveland, the team did not score until the 10th inning. That is when Carlos Santana made his final mark on the game.

Francisco Lindor reached base after being hit by a pitch to put men on first and second base. Santana came up to the plate and proceeded to hit a three-run homer on the second pitch of his at-bat to give Cleveland a 6-3 lead.

There was a question about whether or not the ball was fair or foul, but it was ultimately ruled fair and a three-run homer for Santana.

Santana’s bat is starting to heat up and that is good news for a that desperately needs offensive help. The team continues to be at or near the bottom of most offensive categories.

On the mound

Carlos Carrasco got the start for Cleveland and it was another short outing. Cookie allowed 3 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks while striking out 5 in 4.1 innings. Carrasco threw 91 pitches in the game when he made his exit and it just seems like he isn’t all the way back yet. Cleveland will need Carrasco to start going deeper into games considering their current pitching situation.

Cleveland got some good performances out of their bullpen. Oliver Perez, Cam Hill, Phil Maton, James Karinchak, Nick Wittgren, and Brad Hand combined to strikeout 10 batters and only allow 4 hits in 5.2 innings. The bullpen really stepped up when the team needed them to and manage to keep Cleveland in the game long enough to be able to come away with a win.

Cleveland will look to win Game 2 Wednesday at 7:05 P.M.

Cleveland travels to Pittsburgh to face Pirates

Advertisements

The Cleveland Baseball Club will continue their road trip as they will travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Pirates in a three game series.

Cleveland had a day off after completing their sweep of the Detroit Tigers and will now face the Pirates in Pittsburgh.

Carlos Carrasco will take the mound for Cleveland and he has only faced one hitter in the Pirates lineup before, Jarrod Dyson. Carrasco has limited Dyson to 4 hits, all singles and has struck him out 5 times. Cookie will look to bounce back after a lackluster outing against the Cubs last week. Carrasco allowed 3 runs in 4.1 innings and walked 5 batters. Luckily the Pirates are not the same quality of team as the Cubs so there is some hope he can last a bit longer and allow fewer runs.

JT Brubaker will start for Pittsburgh and this will be his second career start. Brubaker has pitched a total of 8 innings in his 3 appearances this season, allowing 3 runs on 8 hits and 3 walks while striking out 9. Brubaker will have a tough time navigating a lineup that is starting to get hot. Franmil Reyes has been on an absolute tear, going 10-18 with 1 double and 3 home runs in his last five games. Reyes heating up has certainly been a welcome sight for Cleveland as he struggled out of the gate. Cleveland will lean on Reyes until some of the other bats in the lineup start pulling their weight, facing Pittsburgh this week will give some of the other batters in the lineup a chance to heat up.

Tuesday’s game is scheduled to start at 7:05 P.M.

Cleveland drops second straight game to Cubs

The Cleveland Baseball Club were unable to bounce back against the Cubs as they lost their second consecutive game.

Cleveland was looking to get back into the win column Wednesday, but that was not in the cards. The Cubs handed Cleveland their second consecutive loss, this time by a score of 7-2.

Carlos Carrasco got the start for Cleveland and allowed 3 runs on 4 hits in 4.1 innings while striking out 7. Carrasco received no favors from a questionable strike zone as he walked 5 batters, something that is completely uncharacteristic of Cookie. The last time Carrasco walked 5 batters in a game was all the way back on April 16, 2017.

Cleveland’s bats managed more hits when compared to the previous loss, but. they were not able to translate them into runs. Franmil Reyes was the only player to have more than 1 hit (3-4). Jose Ramirez was the only player with an extra-base hit as he was 1-2 with a double and sacrifice fly. Cesar Hernandez (1-5) and Tyler Naquin (1-4) scored the two Cleveland runs. Francisco Lindor went 1-4, his lone hit being an RBI single in the 7th. Sandy Leon got Cleveland’s first hit from the catcher position in a long time.

Cleveland still ranks at or near the bottom of most offensive statistics. Unless this changes offensive performances like this will continue to be the norm.

Cleveland looks to split series with Cubs Wednesday

Advertisements

Coming off a dissapointing 7-1 loss on Tuesday, the Cleveland Baseball Club will look to split their series with the Chicago Cubs.

It was not a great result for Cleveland Tuesday, but luckily they have chance to split their series with the Cubs on Wednesday. Cleveland’s starter will be Carlos Carrasco and the Cubs will send Kyle Hendricks to the mound.

Carlos Carrasco has an impressive 2.50 ERA and 1.000 WHIP in three starts this season with a 11.5 K/9. Carrasco is 2-1 on the year with his loss coming against the Minnesota Twins. Cookie allowed 3 runs (all homers) on 6 hits total. In his other two starts Carrasco has allowed only 2 runs on 6 hits in 12 innings with 18 strikeouts. The 33-year old pitcher has only faced three Cubs batters in the past, Jason Heyward, Josh Phegley, and Steven Souza Jr. Phegely is 1-2, Souza Jr. is 1-8 and Heyward is 0-2.

Chicago’s starter Kyle Hendricks keeps on chugging along, with a 3.54 ERA and 0.934 WHIP in 3 starts this season. Hendricks is someone who has been consistent throughout his career and has never had an ERA above 4. There are two Cleveland batters who have had success in limited at-bats against Hendricks in the past. Jordan Luplow is 1-3 with a home run and Carlos Santana is 2-5 with a double. Domingo Santana has the most at-bats against Hendricks, but is only 4-17. Cesar Hernandez has struggled against Hendricks, going 3-14 with a double.

Wednesday’s game is scheduled to start at 6:10 P.M.

Cleveland routs Cincinnati 13-0

The Cleveland Baseball Club used a 10-run 7th inning en route to a 13-0 win over the visiting Cincinnati Reds.

Somebody woke up the bats. The Cleveland Baseball Club blew out the Cincinnati Reds 13-0 in the final game of their series Thursday. It was only a 3 run game entering the bottom of the 7th and then Cleveland piled on the runs. 10 runs were scored by Cleveland which gives some hope that the offense is waking up and turning things around.

Jose Ramirez was easily the player of the game. Ramirez homered from both sides of the plate, becoming the franchise leader in that category.

Ramirez also tripled in the game as he drove in 4 runs and scored 4 times.

Carlos Santana did not record a hit, but he did walk 4 times in the contest. Santana’s 4 walks helped put pressure on the Reds pitching staff and his walk in the 7th brought in the first of 10 runs in the inning.

Cesar Hernandez also had a good outing, going 2-4 including a three-run double in the 7th. Hernandez also scored 3 times and walked once.

In addition to Cleveland’s offense having a good outing, the pitching staff kept up their impressive run. Carlos Carrasco got the start, allowing 1 hit in 6 innings while walking 4 and striking out 8. Cam Hill, Phil Maton, and Adam Plutko would pitch the final 3 innings, allowing 2 hits and striking out 3 batters combined.

Cleveland will look to run their win streak to 4 as they take on the White Sox in Chicago Friday at 8:10 P.M.

Cleveland looks to take series against Reds

The Cleveland Baseball Club looks to take the series against the Cincinnati Reds as Carlos Carrasco and Luis Castillo square off.

Looking to build off their win on Wednesday, the Cleveland Baseball Club can secure a series win Thursday against the Reds. Carlos Carrasco will take the mound for Cleveland as their offense will do their best to try and show signs of life offensively against Luis Castillo.

Reds first basemen Joey Votto has the best track record against Carlos Carrasco, going 6-13 with 2 doubles, 1 home run, and 2 RBI. Nicholas Castellanos has the most hits against Cookie (10), but also the most strikeouts (13). Mike Moustakas has struggled against Carrasco (3-25 and 7 strikeouts).

Cleveland’s hitters have only a handful of at-bats against Luis Castillo. Luckily there are a few with good history against Castillo. Francisco Lindor is 2-3 with 2 doubles and Cesar Hernandez is 1-3, that one hit being a home run. Carlos Santana is 2-8 with 1 home run and Domingo Santana is 2-9. Mike Freeman, Jose Ramirez, and Oscar Mercado are a combined 0-8 with 3 strikeouts.

In order for Cleveland to win their offense will have to turnaround big time. They are currently at or near the bottom in most offensive categories.

Cleveland is averaging 2.62 runs per game this season which is very difficult to turn into wins. An offensive breakout against Castillo is unlikely, but would be a welcome sight as they face division rival Chicago starting Friday.

Cleveland rotation is getting things done

Advertisements

The trio of Shane Bieber, Mike Clevinger, and Carlos Carrasco have been fantastic in their first starts for the Cleveland Baseball Club.

Coming into the season everyone knew that the strength of the Cleveland Baseball Club was the starting rotation. Through the first three games that seems to be holding up as they have been excellent.

That’s 4 runs allowed in 19 innings for those wondering. An extremely impressive number considering they were facing a Royals team that can give most teams headaches. A combination of contact and speed can make even the best pitchers in baseball falter. Cleveland was able to stifle them for the most part and limit the Royals damage.

Nearly half of the strikeouts came from Shane Bieber’s Opening Day start (14) and Carlos Carrasco added 10 to his total in Sunday’s 9-2 win. The only blemish (if you can call it that) is Clevinger only striking out six and allowing two runs in a loss on Saturday. Of course Clev will bounce back and not only strike out more, but allow less runs.

Next up are Aaron Civale and Zach Plesac. The hope is that they can replicate and continue the success of the top three arms in their rotation when they take on the White Sox. Both pitchers had success last season there is not a reason they cannot keep things going in 2020.

Cleveland powered by 2 HR’s from Ramirez in 9-2 win

Advertisements

The Cleveland Baseball Club defeated the visiting Kansas City Royals by a score of 9-2 in the final game of their three game series.

If there is one thing that the Cleveland Baseball Club needs this season it is Jose Ramirez to look like Jose Ramirez. Good news, Jose Ramirez does indeed look like Jose Ramirez. Ramirez went 3-5 on the day which included two home runs. Ramirez’ three-run home run in the 4th was Cleveland’s first of the season.

https://twitter.com/ThisIsCLEbsebll/status/1287459314320445440?s=20

The Cleveland third baseman also drove in four runs and scored four times. These are the types of performances that will need to be commonplace if the team is to return to the postseason.

Domingo Santana got into the hit column as he went 3-3 with a walk and a run scored. Santana was absolutely crushing the ball as only one of his three hits had a sub 104.3 MPH exit velocity.

Cesar Hernandez got things started at the top of the order, a welcome sight for Cleveland. Hernandez got into some bad habits in his final season with Philadelphia and it appears he has reverted to his former self. Cleveland’s leadoff man had two hits and scored twice. Hernandez is looking to get on base and not hit the ball over the wall. Getting on base for the likes of Jose Ramirez, Francisco Lindor, and Carlos Santana to drive him will be essential for the offense. If Hernandez can keep this up good things will follow.

The man on the mound played a huge role too

It was not only the players in the batters box who made an impact today, it was a guy on the mound, someone everyone could root for, Carlo Carrasco. Carrasco made his first start since last season before being diagnosed with Leukemia and he was fantastic. Cookie pitched six innings striking out 10 while allowing two runs on five hits and walking one. Cleveland could not have asked for more from their third starter.

Oliver Perez, Dominic Leone, and Cameron Hill combined for three innings, striking five. Two baserunners did reach (a hit and a walk) during Leone’s appearance in the 8th. Hill made his MLB debut in 9th and did not allow a baserunner.

With the win, Cleveland is 2-1 and is waiting the arrival of the Chicago White Sox who come to town for a three game set starting Monday.

Cleveland Baseball Club to host Royals to begin season

Advertisements

The Cleveland Baseball Club is set to begin the 2020 season at home as they host the Kansas City Royals for a three game set.

It’s finally here, the 2020 MLB season is starting and the Cleveland Baseball Club are getting ready to face the Kansas City Royals at home. While the Royals do not figure to be the most competitive team, they are a club that can give even the best teams headaches. The top of their lineup has the ability to hit fairly well and has speed to burn. Adalberto Mondesi and Whit Merrifield combined for 63 stolen bases last season. Merrifield may be over 30 now, but he still has the ability to steal bases and force the pitcher to pay attention to him. Cleveland will have to be careful when either of these two get on base.

Cleveland’s pitching staff will feature Shane Bieber, Mike Clevvienger, and Carlos Carrasco when facing Kansas City. The Royals are slotted to start Danny Duffy and Brady Singer with their third pitcher TBA.

Duffy has been hit around a lot by Cleveland with a 5.48 ERA, 1.590 WHIP in 21 games (17 starts). There is the potential that Cleveland’s lineup could take advantage of him yet again on Friday night. There are plenty of switch-hitting and right-handed bats in the lineup that could add to the 13 home runs that Duffy has surrendered to Cleveland batters in the past.

Bieber does not have a great history when facing Kansas City (5.22 ERA and 1.466 WHIP in five games), but he is 3-0 in his career.

Clevinger has been absolutely dominant when facing the Royals. “Sunshine” has a 1.93 ERA and 1.031 in 13 appearances (12 starts) with a 9-0 record.

Carrasco has the most experience facing KC and he has been able to pitch fairly well in his 25 appearances (20 starts) with a 3.90 ERA, 1.243 WHIP, and a 11-7 record.

The games will take place at Progressive Field on the following dates and times.

Friday July 24 7:10 P.M.
Saturday July 25 5:10 P.M.
Sunday July 26 1:10 P.M.
