MLB is failing when it comes to testing and safety

MLB is not having the best time with their COVID-19 testing process and some teams have not received all of the proper safety gear.

When the initial testing numbers came out MLB seemed to be in decent shape. The percentage of players was not high and it appeared that this was a situation that could be relatively controlled.

MLB: The total number of positive tests is 38, which is 1.2% of the 3,185 total samples collected and tested. 31 of these are players, 7 are staff members.

The problem is that not all the test results had come in at the time of this tweet from ESPN’s Buster Olney.

The Giants have not completed their Covid-19 intake process, Gabe Kapler said. The further we dive into this, the more I wonder why the heck MLB put out woefully incomplete survey testing results yesterday.

The San Francisco Giants had not even completed their testing when the numbers were reported. It seems like MLB was trying to get out ahead with an initial low number to make things look better than what they really are. San Francisco was not the only team with this issue, Oakland is also a team that has not received their results back. However this seems to be due to the July 4th holiday.

Since the holiday yesterday, the A’s have not received test results from the position player intake which was done on Friday. Because of that, those position players who tested Friday are not yet cleared to enter the facility. Their workout has been postponed.

Nationals pitcher Sean Doolittle provided two bits of information Sunday. The first being the fact he has not received his test results back.

Sean Doolittle, speaking to reporters now, says he was tested Friday and still doesn't have his results from that. "We've got to clean that up, right?" This has been a concern among some teams. He was very complimentary of the Nationals' medical staff in adhering to the protocol.

The second being that safety equipment that was supposed to be in place for the team to use is not there.

The Nationals have also not received the PPE gear they were suppose to have, Doolittle said. This includes:

N -95 masks
gloves

Coupled with testing delays, this is not good.

If MLB is not able to ensure that testing is done properly and that the proper equipment is in place it will be quite difficult for the season to take place. That is assuming the season even starts to begin with. A possibility that only seems to be growing as each day passes.
