Cleveland clobbers Twins 12-3

The Cleveland Baseball Club capped off their final game of their series with the Minnesota Twins with a 12-3 beatdown at Target Field.

There is nothing like a lopsided win and that is just what the Cleveland Baseball Club got Thursday night at Target Field. Cleveland scored 12 runs on 14 hits as they they came away with a nine run victory.

Cleveland got some impressive power output from Oscar Mercado, Bobby Bradley, and Franmil Reyes. Mercado hit a three-run homer in the 5th to extend Cleveland’s lead to four. While it was the only hit of the game for Mercado, it was quite impactful.

Bradley came through with a two-run shot in 7th to give Cleveland a 10 run lead. It was the second RBI hit of the game for Bradley as he doubled home Jose Ramirez in the 4th.

Reyes capped off their scoring effort with a solo shot in the 9th to make it a 12-3 game. It was a 3-5 effort for Reyes in the contest as he came through with a RBI single in the 7th as well.

Jose Ramirez also had a productive outing, going 3-4 with a sacrifice fly in the 5th and a RBI single in the 7th.

Myles Straw also had three hits in five at-bats, scoring twice along the way.

Cal Quantrill got the start for Cleveland and was fairly impressive. Three runs did come around to score with Qunatrill on the mound, but none were earned. Overall Quantirll allowed three hits and two walks on the night while striking out four.

Cleveland will continue their road trip as they make their way to The Bronx to take on the New York Yankees who are fighting for a playoff spot.

Cleveland loses to Twins 6-3

The Cleveland Baseball Club was not able to complete the doubleheader sweep of the Minnesota Twins, losing. by a score of 6-3.

The first of two games went well for the Cleveland Baseball Club as they came away with a 3-1 win in the first half of their doubleheader with the Minnesota Twins. The second game was not as kind to Cleveland as after taking an early lead, Minnesota stormed back to hand Cleveland a 6-3 loss.

Cleveland did all of their work offensively in the 3rd inning. With two outs and Oscar Mercado on second, it was Amed Rosario coming through with a two-out RBI double. Jose Ramirez would follow with a two-out RBI double of his own to increase the lead to two. Franmil Reyes would subsequently drive in Ramirez with a single, Cleveland’s final run of the game.

The problems for Cleveland’s starter, Logan Allen, popped up in the 4th inning. After keeping the Twins off the board for the first three innings, Minnesota did some two out damage of their own. Allen allowed three straight two-out RBI hits, just like Charlie Barnes did the inning prior with Cleveland batting. Minnesota chased Allen from the game as he failed to get out of the 4th inning.

Trevor Stephan relieved Allen and managed to end the inning with Cleveland trailing 4-3. The Twins would extend their lead as Stephan allowed a two-run homer in the 6th. Cleveland was not able to present a real threat offensively for the remainder of the game leading to the loss.

The series continues in Minnesota Wednesday at 7:40 P.M.

Cleveland snaps losing streak with 3-1 win over Twins

The Cleveland Baseball Club came away with a 3-1 win over the Minnesota Twins in the first game of their doubleheader on Tuesday.

After getting swept by the Milwaukee Brewers at home this past weekend, the Cleveland Baseball Club was desperate for a win. Desperation prevailed Tuesday afternoon as they managed to snap their losing streak with a 3-1 win over the Minnesota Twins in their first of two games Tuesday.

All was not necessarily well early on as the Twins took an early 1-0 lead in the 3rd as Andrelton Simmons doubled home Ben Rortvedt. Luckily this did not send Triston McKenzie into a spiral as that was the only run the Twins scored. McKenzie would allow just three hits and one walk on the day while striking out seven batters.

Cleveland got a boost in the 5th inning as Bradley Zimmer homered for the seventh time this season to tie the game at 1.

Facing the unwelcome proposition of extra-innings in the first game of a doubleheader, Cleveland’s offense went to work to ensure that did not happen. Austin Hedges would double home Harold Ramirez in the 7th to take a 2-1 lead. A third run would come across later on a fielding error from Twins third baseman Luis Arraez.

Emmanuel Clase came on in the 7th and worked a quick inning to close the game. Clase only needed 11 pitches to finish off the first of two games Tuesday.

Cleveland swept by Brewers with 11-1 loss

The rough weekend for the Cleveland Baseball Club continued with the 11-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers Sunday.

Good thing that the eyes in Cleveland were focused on the Browns playing on Sunday and not on the baseball team because it was ugly down on the corner of Carnegie and Ontario. The Cleveland Baseball Club only managed four hits and one run in their 11-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. This lopsided loss comes just one day after being no-hit for a record third time this season, four times if the seven-inning game is included.

Myles Straw, Franmil Reyes, Ryan Lavarnway, and Oscar Mercado were the only Cleveland batters collecting hits Sunday. Straw’s single in the 6th drove in the only run in the losing effort. This was the third of the inning and in fact was the first inning that a hit was registered after being hitless through 5.1 innings.

Pitching wise it was not a great outing for Aaron Civale. Making his second start since returning from the injured list, Civale was hit hard early and often. Civale would allow seven runs on seven hits and two walks in just 3 innings. Three of the seven hits allowed by Civale were home runs coming off the bats of Kolten Wong, Avisail Garcia, and Manny Pina.

Cleveland is now 69-72 on the year and is firmly in second place in the AL Central. It will be an off day Monday as they will travel to Minnesota to take on the Twins for a three game series beginning Tuesday afternoon

Cleveland smashed by Brewers, lose 10-3

A six-run 5th inning led to the Cleveland Baseball Club coming out on the wrong end of a 10-3 final score to the visiting Milwaukee Brewers.

Through the first four innings the game was close and it appeared that the Cleveland Baseball Club could at least make things competitive. That all changed in the 5th inning when the Milwaukee Brewers scored six runs, subsequently chasing Cleveland starter Eli Morgan from the game.

While Morgan was still in the game Milwaukee only scored two of their six runs in the inning. After allowing three hits and a walk, Morgan was removed from the game following a catcher’s interference call which allowed a run to score. Sam Hentges came on and managed to get Rowdy Tellez to pop out before surrendering a grand slam to Lorenzo Cain to clear the bases. With that the book on Morgan was closed, charged with seven earned runs on eight hits and two walks in just 4.1 innings.

Cleveland would finish the teams with just three hits and would go 1-11 with runners in scoring position.

The only thing that can be pointed to as a positive for Cleveland is that they managed to steal six bases in the game. Myles Straw led the way with three while Jose Ramirez stole two and Bradley Zimmer stole one.

Cleveland fell back below .500 on the year with the loss and now stand at 69-70. Game 2 of their series with the Brewers will take place at 6:10 P.M. at Progressive Field

Three homers power Cleveland to 4-1 win over Twins

The Cleveland Baseball Club homered three times to avoid the sweep and come away with a 4-1 win over the Minnesota Twins.

Just a few days ago the Cleveland Baseball Club’s franchise record homer streak came to an end as they lost 3-0 to the Minnesota Twins. A second straight 3-0 loss to Minnesota led to Cleveland on the brink of being swept in a four game series. This time around Cleveland not only managed to score at least one run, they managed to homer three times en route to four runs and a 4-1 victory.

Trailing 1-0 in the 3rd inning it was time for Cleveland’s offense to wake up. After Myles Straw reached on a walk, it was a mammoth blast from Franmil Reyes which gave Cleveland a 2-1 lead.

The very next inning it was Oscar Mercado’s turn to homer. Mercado took a 1-1 pitch and hit it over the wall in left.

Wanting to get in on the action, Jose Ramirez got his home run pitch and deposited into the right field seats.

The run scoring for Cleveland was only half the equation Thursday night. An impressive start from Cal Quantrill provided the opportunity to win the game. Quantrill allowed just one run, a Miguel Sano homer in the 2nd. Besides the Sano homer, Quantrill allowed three other hits while striking out five and walking two in 7.2 innings. Blake Parker finished the 8th on just four pitches while Emmanuel Clase handled the 9th to earn his 22nd save of the year.

Cleveland’s home stand continues as they begin a three game series against the Milwaukee Brewers at 7:10 P.M.

Cleveland one hit in 3-0 loss to Twins

The Cleveland Baseball Club only managed one hit in a 3-0 loss to the Minnesota Twins.

On one hand it was an unimpressive effort offensively for the Cleveland Baseball Club. On the other it was a spectacular start for Twins pitcher Joe Ryan. Ryan was perfect through 6.1 innings until Amed Rosario singled to left for Cleveland’s first and only hit of the game. Rosario’s single was the only baserunner Cleveland had for the entire game. Cleveland did not fair any better against Minnesota relievers Caleb Thielbar and Tyler Duffey, striking out three times in six at-bats.

This was the second straight game which the Twins came away with a 3-0 win at Progressive Field, the final score for Wednesday being an exact duplicate of Tuesday.

Triston McKenzie started for Cleveland and was impressive, even though he came away with a loss. McKenzie allowed just one run on three hits while striking out seven and walking one. This was the exact type of start that any team would want out of their starter. The unfortunate aspect of the game was that their offense was non-existent with Ryan on the mount for Minnesota.

The final game of their series at home against the Twins takes place Thursday at 6:10 P.M. with Cleveland looking to avoid being victims of a four game sweep.

Homer streak ends as Cleveland loses 3-0

The Cleveland Baseball Club’s franchise record homer streak of 20 games came to an end with Tuesday’s 3-0 loss to the Minnesota Twins.

For the first time in 20 games the Cleveland Baseball Club failed to homer. The 3-0 loss Tuesday night ended the franchise record streak of games in which the team homered. Considering the overall lack of consistent power in the lineup, the fact the streak lasted as long as it did is quite impressive. While the team does feature big time sluggers in Franmil Reyes and Jose Ramirez, most other names in the lineup do not pose a regular power threat to opposing pitching.

The Cleveland batters did end up with the same amount of hits as the Twins (7), the difference is that Minnesota managed to drive in runs while Cleveland did not. While Minnesota was only 1-7 with runners in scoring position, Cleveland was 0-3.

Myles Straw led the team in hits with two while Jose Ramirez was the walks leader with two. Ramirez also stole a base in the 1st after reaching via a walk, his 21st of the season.

Aaron Civale made his first start since June 21st and pitched quite well. Civale allowed just one run on three hits and one walk while striking out is six batters in 4.2 innings. While Civale needed 78 pitches to almost get through five innings, the overall performance was encouraging to see and hopefully the young pitcher can continue pitching at this level.

Cleveland faces the Twins Wednesday night as they look to get a win after dropping the first two games of their four game series.

Cleveland wins in extras over Royals 5-3

The Cleveland Baseball Club came away with a 5-3 extra-innings win on the road against the Kansas City Royals.

It doesn’t matter that it took extra-innings, but Wednesday’s 5-3 win over the Kansas City Royals can still be marked as a win for the Cleveland Baseball Club.

After finding themselves trailing 3-0 after 4 innings, Cleveland got to work offensively. It took an error for Cleveland to score their first runs of the game. Bradley Zimmer and Harold Ramirez came across to score while Michael A. Taylor committed a fielding error in the outfield.

Yu Chang came up in the 7th and delivered with a solo home run, his seventh of the season.

The game would stay tied until extras and that is when Cleveland managed to take the lead for the first time in the game. Austin Hedges would drive in Daniel Johnson in the 11th, giving Cleveland a 4-3 lead. Chang would follow with a double that allowed Bobby Bradley to score the fifth run of the game. Trevor Stephan would come on in the bottom of the inning to come away with his first save of the season. Stephan struck out two of the three batters he faced to close the game.

Cleveland can come away with a sweep with a win on Thursday as the third and final game of the series will take place at 8:10 P.M.

Amed Rosario carries load in 7-2 win over Royals

Advertisements

The Cleveland Baseball Club shortstop went 5-5 in the 7-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals.

Amed Rosario was more than ready for Tuesday night’s game in Kansas City. Rosario started things off in the 1st inning with an inside-the-park home run to give Cleveland a 1-0 lead.

This was just the start of what ended up being a historical night for the Cleveland shortstop. Amed Rosario would come up in the 5th inning and deliver with a two-run single for his third hit of the game.

Perhaps Amed Rosario was a bit tired in the 7th inning as this time his home run went over the fence, not requiring an all out sprint to make it around the bases.

In the 9th Amed Rosario would reach on an infield single to finish the game 5-5. Rosario became the first player to go 5-5 with five RBI and homer in both forms in a game since 1920, the year which RBI became an official stat.

The other two Cleveland runs came off the bat of Bobby Bradley who homered in the 8th inning. Bradley drove in Bradley Zimmer to extend Cleveland’s lead to seven for the moment.

All of the work from Amed Rosario gave Zach Plesac more than enough cushion to come away with a win. Plesac would allow just two hits in 7 innings while striking out seven. This was the first start since early May that Plesac did not allow a run and just his third of the season overall. Before this start Plesac had allowed 19 runs in 27 innings, not necessarily an impressive run. Seeing this type of start, even against a lackluster Royals team, is encouraging to see from a pitcher who has shown the ability to pitch better than he has this season.

Cleveland can take their second game in a row in Kansas City Wednesday night at 8:10 P.M.
