MLB Trade Deadline winners and losers

Advertisements

The 2021 MLB trade deadline was one to remember as many franchise cornerstone players were on the move. As with any deadline, there are clear winners and losers of the day, let’s take a look.

Winners

Los Angeles Dodgers

This one is obvious. Los Angeles swung a deal with the Washington Nationals landing both Max Scherzer and Trea Turner. Adding Scherzer to their rotation when they are currently without Clayton Kershaw due to injury and the unknown status of Trevor Bauer, who may never throw another pitch as a Dodger, is a huge win. Inserting Turner into the mix lengthens their lineup and with another year of control after this season gives them a consistent presence beyond this season.

New York Yankees

There are two criticisms when evaluating the lineup of the New York Yankees, too right handed and too all or nothing. They addressed the two areas by acquiring Joey Gallo from the Texas Rangers and Anthony Rizzo from the Chicago Cubs, both are left-handed bats. While Gallo is another all-or-nothing guy, Rizzo has the ability to be more of a consistent source of at least decent batting average. Sure they have some work to do in regards to the playoff hunt, but they can’t be counted out just yet. Additionally, the short porch in right field should be quite nice for both new faces in The Bronx.

New York Mets

The Bronx Bombers were not the only team making moves in New York. The Mets made a big splash of their own, acquiring Javier Baez from the Cubs. At the moment the Mets are without Francisco Lindor, so Baez can slide into the shortstop position for the time being. When Lindor does return Baez can shift to a different position, something he said he would only do for Lindor. Are there concerns with the bat of Baez? Sure, but the Mets do not need him to be The Guy in their lineup, but just another contributor for their offense. While adding another starting pitcher could have helped, they did add Rich Hill and saw the debut of Carlos Carrasco Friday night, two options they could rely on in some capacity down the stretch. At the end of the day it was an overall great deadline for the Mets.

Chicago White Sox

The White Sox have essentially already won the division, so they were looking to solidify a few positions. Adding Cesar Hernandez was a solid option for a team that would later move the injured Nick Madrigal in a deal that saw Craig Kimbrel moving from the north to the south side of Chicago. Additionally, the team also acquired Ryan Tepera from the Cubs in a deal from the previous day. The White Sox are loading up on their bullpen and now have a three headed monster featuring Liam Hendriks in addition to their new acquisitions of Kimbrel and Tepera. Come playoff time the back end of the White Sox bullpen could be scary.

Chicago Cubs

Let’s face it, the Cubs had to blow it up. They had a roster full of extremely talented players on expiring contracts that extension talks had broken down with. Moving Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Javier Baez, Craig Kimbrel, and Ryan Tepera had to be done. While they could open up contact talks after the season when most of the aforementioned names become free agents. In the end the Cubs had to turn the page on the World Series winning core and begin a new era in Chicago.

Losers

Colorado Rockies

There was speculation that the Rockies could move Trevor Story and Jon Gray. Flash forward to after the deadline and both players remain in Colorado. If the Rockies were going to actually have a successful deadline they needed to move Story and Gray. The fact both are still on the roster is team building malpractice and they deserve all the criticism they get.

Boston Red Sox

This was an underwhelming deadline for the Boston Red Sox. They had the opportunity to bring two former players back in Anthony Rizzo and Craig Kimbrel, yet the only move they made was for Kyle Schwarber. Schwarber is currently injured, but when he comes back there will be a logjam of where to play him. As everyone knows, Schwarber is defensively challenged. There is another defensively challenged outfielder on the roster in JD Martinez, who is currently their designated hitter. Because of this, putting Schwarber at DH, an option that would make sense for most American League clubs, is not available to the Red Sox.

San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres were on the cusp of acquiring Max Scherzer until the Dodgers swooped in and got the deal done for themselves. Missing out on a player like Scherzer is bad enough, but losing him to a division rival and one that is looking to create separation is not a great outcome.

St. Louis Cardinals

The Cardinals added two pitchers on expiring deals in Jon Lester and J.A .Happ. St. Louis is 9.5 games back in the division and trails by 6.5 games in the Wild Card race. The moves overall are confusing and don’t make a lot of sense. Neither pitcher has been necessarily good this season and are not the answer to fix a rotation they once were. This really seems like they made moves for the sake of making moves.

Cleveland drops first of two games against St. Louis

The Cleveland Baseball Club bullpen made some mistakes late leading to their 4-2 loss to the visiting St. Louis Cardinals.

There was a chance that the Cleveland Baseball Club could have came out victorious Tuesday night, but unfortunately the bullpen had other ideas. Everyone’s least favorite relief pitcher, Bryan Shaw, came on to pitch the 7th and allowed a two-run homer to Paul DeJong giving St. Louis a 3-2 lead. The Cardinals would add another run in the 9th to extend their lead to two and that was more than enough to hand Cleveland a defeat.

Before things went awry in the 7th, Cleveland actually got an impressive start from Cal Quantrill. Quantrill allowed just one run on four hits while striking out five and walking one in 6 innings. The lone run that scored against Quantrill was a solo home run from Harrison Bader in the 3rd. Quantrill has allowed just one run in his last three starts and seems to becoming a stable presence in the rotation.

Both of Cleveland’s runs came on a two-run shot from Jose Ramirez.

It was the 21st home run of the season for Ramirez, a team high for Cleveland.

Cleveland is now 9.5 games behind of the Chicago White Sox and trails the Oakland Athletics by 5 games for the second Wild Card spot. The trade deadline is just a few days away and there could be some big changes for the Cleveland Baseball Club in the near future.

Cleveland drops second game in St. Louis 8-2

The Cleveland Baseball Club were not able to win their second straight game in St. Louis as the Cardinals by a score of 8-2.

The Cleveland Baseball Club had a chance to win two straight games in St. Louis, but that was not in the cards as the Cardinals returned the favor with a blowout win of their own. It was St. Louis who managed to score eight straight runs after Cleveland’s two run 1st inning which led to the large score differential.

Eddie Rosario drove in the first run of the game on an RBI double and Harold Ramirez would knock in their second run on a sacrifice fly. Unfortunately all three of Cleveland’s hits came in the 1st as they were held hitless over the next 8 innings. During that St. Louis took it to Cleveland’s pitching staff.

St. Louis immediately answered in the bottom of the 1st with four runs of their own, leading to an early exit for Jean Carlos Mejia after just two-thirds of an inning. Phil Maton would follow and allow two runs on two hits while striking out six. The only other Cleveland pitcher to allow any runs to scarfed was Trevor Stephan in the 7th. Stephan allowed two runs on two hits and one walk. It was just not a great outing overall for Cleveland and their pitching staff, but luckily they have an off day on Thursday. They can use that day to reset and prepare to take on the Seattle Mariners for a three game series.

Cleveland clobbers Cardinals 10-1

The Cleveland Baseball Club bounced back with a 10-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.

There is one thing that the Cleveland Baseball Club needed after dropping two of three to the Baltimore Orioles and that was a blowout victory. That is just what happened as Cleveland demolished the St. Louis Cardinals on the road 10-1.

Shane Bieber was Cleveland’s starter and was his usual dominant self, allowing just one run on five hits and two walks. The one surprising aspect of his outing is that Bieber only struck out five batters. Luckily the Cleveland offense did more than enough to secure the victory.

Jose Ramirez drove in nearly half of Cleveland’s runs as he went 3-5 with four RBI. Three of his runs driven in came on a three-run homer in the 3rd inning.

Cleveland took advantage of Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez who is known for being quite wild. Martinez only lasted 4 innings as he allowed five runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out seven. Accumulating strikeouts has never been an issue for Martinez, it is the fact he can be hit around fairly easily and walks occasionally get the best of him.

Other batters of note

Amed Rosario went 3-5 as hit hot streak continues since moving to shortstop exclusively.

The other Rosario, Eddie Rosario, went 3-5 as well with two RBI.

Josh Naylor was 2-5 in the contest with a run scored.

It was a 2-4 performance at the plate for Austin Hedges as he is 4-13 to start the month of June.

Cleveland will play the second and final game of the contest Wednesday at 8:15 P.M.

1. How long until the New York Jets fire Adam Gase?

The New York Jets lost again and somehow Adam Gase is currently still employed. Denver was on their third quarterback of the season and still came out victorious over the Jets. Adam Gase is obviously a bad coach who only got his opportunities due to being around one of the greatest quarterbacks ever in Peyton Manning. We’ve seen Gase coach in two places since he had Manning running his offense and it is very apparent that the success is because of Peyton and not Gase. Firing Gase this season will probably not have an impact in the win-loss column, but it could help take a step in the right direction culture wise.

2. Marlins vs. Cubs

The Miami Marlins shocked many when they defeated the Chicago Cubs in Game 1 of their series. Game 2 was postponed on Thursday and will take place today at 2:00 P.M. Can the Marlins pull off the upset and send the superior Cubs home early? I’m not sure but I will definitely be watching that game today.

3. Cardinals vs. Padres

What a series this has been. The Padres and Cardinals have split the first two games of their series and now face a win or go home scenario. If San Diego had Mike Clevinger or Dinelson Lamet they may have won the series already. Once I saw that the Padres would be without both pitchers I really thought the Cardinals could advance. St. Louis is good enough to at least compete with better teams and the fact they didn’t have to face Clevinger and Lamet may lead to them advancing to the Divisional Series.

With A Jimmmitude post for Wednesday, September 30, 2020: Thoughts about the MLB Playoffs and the NBA Finals.

1. Home Field Advantage?

Only one home team won on Tuesday, the Tampa Bay Rays. Minnesota, Cleveland, and Oakland all lost and any sort of home field advantage is being tested after only one game. Now three teams who were the higher seed in the first round of the playoffs could be eliminated today. If home field advantage is going to be a thing in the first round of the playoffs it has to start today.

2. National League Playoffs begin

The American League got the spotlight on Tuesday, but the National League begins Wednesday. Three intriguing matchups and one that seems to be a foregone conclusion, let’s start there. The Los Angeles Dodgers are taking on the Milwaukee Brewers in a series that should be an easy win for L.A. Stranger things have happened, but a Dodgers win seems like a lock.

Now for the intriguing matchups. Reds vs. Braves, Marlins vs. Cubs, Cardinals vs. Padres. These series could really go either way, the differences between these teams do not appear to be as large as the difference between the Brewers and Dodgers. Any upset that occurs with these teams would not be surprising in the least bit. Let the chaos begin.

3. NBA Finals

Lakers and Heat, what matchup for the 2020 NBA Finals. Will LeBron James be able to win his fourth ring and build his legacy? Can the Los Angeles Lakers win another title in what would be a fitting tribute to Kobe Bryant? Can Jimmy Butler change the narrative that has surrounded him throughout his career and build a legacy of his own? Whatever happens in The Finals it is sure to be entertaining. It feels like the Lakers should win, but never count out the Heat. Miami just has that feel of a championship caliber team, but the Lakers seem to be a team of destiny.

Cleveland unable to continue win streak vs. Cardinals

Advertisements

The Cleveland Baseball Club was not able to complete the sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals as they were on the wrong side of a 7-2 final score.

The winning streak was going to end sooner or later and that is just what happened Sunday as Cleveland lost by a score of 7-2. Things were looking bright early as Tyler Naquin hit a two-run homer to give Cleveland an early lead. Unfortunately Cleveland was not able to score again and they only managed 3 more hits the rest of the game

Aaron Civale was Cleveland’s starter and did not pitch all that well. Civale allowed 5 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks with 3 strikeouts. St. Louis was just jumping on Civale’s pitches in what is his second straight start allowing 7 or more hits and 3 or more runs. The Cardinals appeared to be really comfortable in the box and were not really fooled much by Civale. Even with the lackluster performance Civale did manage to last 6 innings.

This was the second straight game against St. Louis where the offense did not produce all that much. The difference being is that Cleveland was able to win on Saturday while limiting the Cardinals offense. The offensive struggles could lead to the team possibly dealing Mike Clevinger before Monday’s trade deadline in an effort to improve the offense.
