Shorthanded Cavaliers lose to Pelicans 116-109

The Cleveland Cavaliers were without several key players and still were competitive in a 115-106 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans.

This game was always going to be an uphill battle for the Cleveland Cavaliers even if they were 100% healthy. The problem is that they weren’t and ultimately that played a factor in their loss to the New Orleans Pelicans. Cleveland was without Collin Sexton, Darius Garland, Jarrett Allen, and Larry Nance Jr. The lineup that was put together looked more like a surrender lineup than a competitive one. But credit where credit is due, the Cavaliers put up a much bigger fight than anyone could have expected.

Cleveland came out firing with a starting lineup featuring Mathew Dellavedova, Isaac Okoro, Dean Wade, Kevin Love, and Isaiah Hartenstein. The fact the Cavaliers scored 39 points with this starting five is sort of amazing. Cleveland even held a first half lead and played well in the 3rd quarter, holding a 94-90 lead heading into the 4th. The problem is that at some point they were going to run out of gas and that was during the final quarter. Cleveland was outscored 26-15 in the 4th and that lead to what seemed inevitable from the beginning, a Cavs loss.

Game notes

The Cavaliers surprisingly made more three-pointers than the Pelicans (13-7). The fact Cleveland attempted 40 shots from deep is sort of perplexing considering their usual low volume and low 3PT% on the year.

Dean Wade led the Cavaliers in scoring with 21 points, a new career-high. Wade did most of his damage from deep as he made five three-pointers.

Isaac Okoro had himself a nice night offensively, finishing with 19 points on a 6-10 shooting effort including 2-4 from three. Okoro also made all five free throw attempts on the night.

Apparently Kevin Love was on a mission to essentially shoot three-pointers as he went 5-14 in that regard and 1-3 from two. Love was tied with Okoro for the second-highest Cavaliers scoring effort.

Matthew Dellavedova was supposed to be on a minutes restriction, but was on the court the most of any starter (34 minutes). Delly finished 10 assists and 7 points on the night on a pretty ugly shooting effort (3-11).

It was a rare efficient shooting night from Cedi Osman as he went 7-11 and scored 15 points. Osman also had 7 assists, 3 rebounds, 1 block, and 1 steal on the night.

Like many others, Taurean Prince was not a consistent shooter for the Cavaliers. Prince went 4-11 (0-4 3PT) and ended up with 11 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 block.

The Cavaliers have a few days off before returning to action April 14th in Charlotte.

Cavaliers lose fourth consecutive game

The absence of Joel Embiid did not matter for the Philadelphia 76ers as they handed the Cleveland Cavaliers a decisive 114-94 loss.

The fact that the Philadelphia 76ers were missing Joel Embiid was massively overstated as they managed to prove it did not matter against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Philly dominated the Cavs in the second half and handed Cleveland a 20-point loss. What was seen on Thursday was the difference between a team in contention and one stuck in the basement of the Eastern Conference.

The Cavaliers surprisingly kept things close in the first half, only trailing by 2 points. It was the second half that doomed Cleveland yet again. Philadelphia outscored Cleveland 27-17 in the 3rd and 29-21 in the 4th. This has been a recurring theme for the Cavs all season long and was hardly surprising. Cleveland simply cannot compete with most teams in the league and the 76ers are no exception, even without Embiid.

Love and Delly return

Even though the loss was disappointing, the Cavaliers saw the return of Kevin Love and Matthew Dellavedova. Love has only appeared in 4 games prior this season and this was the season debut for Dellavedova. Love finished with 13 points on 4-10 shooting (3-6 3PT) in 20 minutes. Delly saw 16 minutes off the bench finishing with 5 assists.

Highs and lows of SexLand

Collin Sexton scored a team-high 24 points on the night on 7-15 from the floor. This is one of the better performances from Young Bull as he usually needs 10+ misses to eclipse 20 points. Sexton made all 9 free throws and 1 of 4 three-point attempts with 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals.

Darius Garland did not have a great game by any means. Garland only had 6 points on 3-8 from the field while missing all 3 three-point attempts. The second-year guard did have a game-high 8 assists, the problem was the 7 turnovers pretty much canceled them all out.

Looking ahead

The Cavaliers head back on out the road for Saturday’s game against the Miami Heat. Cleveland has lost 19 straight games in Miami and this does not seem to be a great opportunity to snap this rather long streak.

Love, Dellavedova, and Prince out for Cavaliers

The Cleveland Cavaliers are going to be without three players when they take on the Chicago Bulls.

Kevin Love, Matthew Dellavedova, and Taurean Prince will not be available for the Cleveland Cavaliers when they take on the Chicago Bulls Wednesday.

Dellavedova is yet to appear in a game this season for the Cavaliers. Love has only appeared in four games this season, the last being on March 14th. Cleveland has played the last five games without Love and went 2-3 over that stretch. Prince has missed 13 of the last 15 games for the Cavs due to injury or not dressing/playing.

Cavaliers to be without four players for opener

The Cavs will be shorthanded for their season opener against the Charlotte Hornets.

When the Cleveland Cavaliers take the court against the Charlotte Hornets Wednesday night they will be without the services of four players. Matthew Dellavedova, Kevin Love, Kevin Porter Jr., and Dante Exum will miss the first game of the season.

Cavaliers head coach J.B. Bickerstaff will have to be a little bit creative with his rotations. This includes a strategy that many have wanted the team to employ for quite some time, staggering Collin Sexton and Darius Garland. The fit between those two was fairly questionable last season which led to speculation about whether they can be on the court at the same time. With Sexton as the “backup” point guard, it will allow Bickerstaff to explore options with his wings and big men.

Damyean Dotson, Dylan Windler, Issac Okoro, Cedi Osman, Larry Nance Jr., Dean Wade, Andre Drummond, JaVale McGee, and Thon Maker should give the Cavs a variety of different looks. Whether or not they are actually productive is a different story entirely. The Cavaliers are better off with the aforementioned players missing the game in the lineup. Although this does give the team a chance to get a better look at their depth in real game action. Best case scenario the Cavs win the game. Worst case scenario is that they get an extended look at their bench.

Cavs re-sign Matthew Dellavedova

Advertisements

The Cleveland Cavaliers have agreed to re-sign the 30-year old point guard and fan favorite to a one-year deal.

Matthew Dellavedova will be continuing his second stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers for another season. Dellavedova has agreed to a one-year deal with the Cavs.

Marc Stein would follow up this tweet reporting that the Lakers were interested in Matthew Dellavedova for one of their final open roster spots. Delly opted to stay in Cleveland with one of the two teams that he has played for in his career.

The Cavaliers figure to use Matthew Dellavedova as a bench player this upcoming season. Cleveland’s rotation already features the likes of Collin Sexton, Darius Garland, and Kevin Porter Jr. That is before mentioning that Cleveland acquired Dante Exum last season, sort of a buy-low lottery ticket type acquisition. Dellavedova averaged 3.1 points and 3.2 assists in 14.4 minutes across 57 games last season. The Cavs should lean on their younger guard options with Dellavedova being a veteran presence who can step in if needed.

Cavaliers fall short in Chicago 108-103

Advertisements

The Cleveland Cavaliers were not able to continue their winning ways as they fall short in the first game of their road trip iin Chicago 108-103.

It seemed like the Cavaliers injuries caught up to them Tuesday night in Chicago. Cleveland only played eight players in their 108-103 loss to Chicago due to Darius Garland, Tristan Thompson, Dante Exum, and Kevin Porter Jr. continuing to miss time.

The Cavs were just unable to hit their three-point shots consistently. Cleveland went 6-24 from deep while Chicago went 12-34. There is no doubt that if the Cavaliers were able to hit a few more that they very well could have come away with a win in Chicago.

Collin Sexton had another spectacular night, finishing with 26 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds, 1 steal. Sexton made 12 of 16 field goal attempts and made both free throw attempts. This was the fifth straight game of 25 or more points for Sexton.

Andre Drummond was Cleveland’s second-highest scorer with 21 points. Drummond’s rebounding numbers were surprisingly unspectacular as he only had 7 total. There was one area that Drummond clearly struggled in, turnovers. The Cavs big man had 6 turnovers, the most on the team and the second-highest in the game (Chicago’s Coby White had 9).

Larry Nance Jr. came off the bench and had a productive game. Nance stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 block. Nance went 6-6 from the field (2-2 3PT) and 2-4 from the free throw line.

Matthew Dellavedova continued to be “Steady Delly”. Dellavedova made all 3 field goal attempts (2-2 3PT) and set up his teammates to finish with 8 assists. Delly is averaging 9.2 assists per game over his last five games and has certainly helped the Cavaliers stay competitive while they have been without some of their key players.

Cleveland will face the Hornets in Charlotte Friday at 7:00 P.M.

Cavaliers edge out Spurs in OT

The Cleveland Cavaliers nearly won in regulation against the San Antonio Spurs. San Antonio’s Derrick White made a shot with 1 second remaining to force overtime. It was in that period that the Cavaliers put together a nice group effort to come away with a 132-129 overtime win.

A lot of free throw attempts

The Cavaliers might want to consider themselves lucky with this win. Cleveland turned the ball over 18 times compared to only nine for San Antonio. This usually does not lead to wins, but the Cavs somehow managed a victory.

The NBA might want to look into the officiating in this one. The Cavs and Spurs combined to attempts 81 free throws. 81! That’s absurd. There absolutely no reason for this many free throw attempts.

Double-doubles for the Cavaliers big men

With the exception of Tristan Thompson who left with an eye injury, all the Cavs big men finished with a double-double.

Andre Drummond 28 points, 17 rebounds
Kevin Love 14 points, 18 rebounds
Larry Nance Jr. 19 points, 10 rebounds

Drummond finished with the most points in the game and Love has the most rebounds.

Collin Sexton keeps on going

Young Bull finished with the second-highest point total in the game (26). Sexton was 8-19 from the field and made 9 of 11 free throw attempts. Sunday’s 26 point outing makes it four straight games of 25 or more points and six of his last seven. This includes a career-high 41 points against the Celtics.

Steady Delly

Matthew Dellavedova is thriving as the Cavs primary point guard while Darius Garland remains out. Delly also had a double-double (14 points, 11 assists). Over his last four games Dellavedova has a 38-8 assist-turnover ratio. Although eight of his turnovers have come in the past two games (four each).

The Cavaliers return to the court Tuesday in Chicago to take on the Bulls.

Cavaliers defeat Nuggets 104-102

Advertisements

Matthew Dellavedova may be the unsung hero for the Cleveland Cavaliers in their 104-102 victory over the Denver Nuggets Saturday. Delly didn’t score much (only 7 points on 3-4 shooting), but that’s not why he is getting praise here. It is his career-high 14 assists that allowed the Cavs to make their second half comeback a reality.

Cleveland trailed by as much as 11 points early on in the game, but it was old Steady Delly who kept the team moving right along. The Cavs first lead came early  in the 3rd quarter. The two teams would battle back and forth for the entire second half until Cleveland was to get enough of a lead late in the game that it forced Denver to pin their hopes on one inbounds play with seconds remaining. Denver’s Jamal Murray put up a desperation shot as time expired, but missed giving the Cavs their 18th win of the season.

Kevin Love lead the Cavaliers with 27 points courtesy of five made three’s. Love stepped up big time when the Cavs needed him most.

Collin Sexton looked unstoppable yet again. Sexton scored 25 points on 11-17 from the field. A lot of Sexton’s damage came from mid-range, a bit of a lost art in the modern NBA.

Cedi Osman had a surprising performance from deep, making 5 of 6 attempts en route to a 20 point scoring night.

Tristan Thompson grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds and added 9 points to his total.

The Cavaliers will look to make it two in a row Sunday night against the Spurs.

Shorthanded Cavaliers fall to Jazz 126-113

Advertisements

The Utah Jazz were just too much for the shorthanded Cleveland Cavaliers Monday night. Cleveland was able to keep things interesting for the majority of the game but were not able to come away with a win, losing by a score of 126-113.

Cleveland only suited up nine players Monday night. The Cavs were without Andre Drummond, Darius Garland, Tristan Thompson, Dante Exum, and Alfonzo McKinnie. The first three more of a surprise than the latter two. Drummond was not mentioned as someone who would miss the game as this was something that developed throughout the day.

Collin Sexton has a career-high 32 points on 11-17 from the field. Sexton made 4 of 6 attempts from deep en route to his now career-high scoring performance. Sexton would round his night with 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals.

Kevin Porter Jr. got his third career NBA start and while there were some highlight worthy plays, he struggled shooting the basketball. Porter made 2 of his 9 three-point attempts (5-14 overall) and finished with 16 points after going 4-5 from the free throw line.

Kevin Love was Cleveland’s second-highest scorer with 22 points. 6 of Love’s 7 made field goals were of the three-point variety as he only managed to make 1 of his 4 two-point attempts.

Larry Nance Jr. also started for the Cleveland Cavaliers due to the absences of Drummond and Thompson. Nance finished with 16 points and 8 rebounds in 39 minutes.

Matthew Dellavedova did not do much in the scoring department but manage to finish with 9 assists.

Cleveland returns to action Wednesday at home against the Celtics

Cavaliers improve to 3-1 under Bickerstaff

Advertisements

With the Cavaliers defeating the Philadelphia 76ers 108-94 Wedneday, Cleveland is now 3-1 under new head coach J.B. Bickerstaff.

Yes, you read that right. J.B. Bickerstaff has won three of his first four games as the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs handled the visiting 76ers quite easily Wednesday night and won by a score of 108-94. This was the Cavaliers second consecutive win and third in four games. This game was a bit easier when compared to Monday’s epic comeback win over the Miami Heat. At one point Cleveland led by 20 while Philadelphia did not lead at any point during the game.

Collin Sexton led all scorers with 28 points on 9-16 from the field. Sexton was efficient from deep and the free throw line (2-3 3PT, 8-9 FT) which helped him lead the game in scoring.

Tristan Thompson got the start with Andre Drummond being out with a calf strain. Thompson delivered with 14 points and 13 rebounds in his spot start. Thompson’s job did get a little bit easier considering that Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid only played 8 minutes due to a shoulder injury.

Larry Nance Jr. also stepped up big time with 13 points, 15 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal. Nance was all over the place and made an impact on both ends of the court.

The surprise performance of the night? Matthew Dellavedova. Delly made all 5 of his field goal attempts (2-2 3pt) and finished 12 points in 25 minutes off the bench. Dellavedova’s playing time may see an increase moving forward due to Dante Exum’s recent injury.

Cleveland will head out on the road to face Zion Williamson and the New Orleans Pelicans Friday before returning home for five straight home games beginning Saturday February 29th.
