Cavs trade Kevin Porter Jr. to Houston

The Cleveland Cavaliers have traded the second year player to the Houston Rockets.

Kevin Porter Jr. is no longer a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs have traded the second year player to the Houston Rockets for a protected second round pick.

It was only a matter of time before the Cavs moved on from Kevin Porter Jr. It became known earlier this week that the team planned to move on from the former 1st round pick.

Talent was never an issue for Kevin Porter Jr., the issues were off the court. There was an incident in the offseason that saw Porter arrested on after a single vehicle crash. The more recent incident with Porter was the outburst in the locker room after discovering what used to be his locker occupied by the recently acquired Taurean Prince. It was at that moment that the Cavs decided that it would be best for both parties to go their separate ways resulting in the trade to Houston.

Cavs to move on from Kevin Porter Jr.

The Cleveland Cavaliers will be looking to trade or release Porter.

A disappointing end for Kevin Porter Jr. in Cleveland as the Cavaliers will move on from the talented, yet troubled 20-year old. The Cavs are fielding trade offers and if nothing materialized will release him.

The incident that led to this decision? An outburst by Porter in the Cavs locker room after learning that Taurean Prince has been given the locker that was previously his. Porter even threw food during the outburst.

Cavs general manager Koby Altman even tried to calm him down and was not successful.

Kevin Porter Jr. was also involved in a few off court incidents this past offseason including an arrest following a car accident. The Cavs had been guiding him as he worked his way back to the team. The outburst on Friday came the day after participating in practice and the first game he attended in person.

At the end of the day it was not about each incident that led to the team looking to move on, it was all of them put together. Eventually even the most patient franchises will have had enough and look to make a change. Kevin Porter Jr. is a very talented player, but will have to make some big changes if he does not want what is currently happening to be a recurring theme in his career.

Cavaliers pick up options on four players

The Cleveland Cavaliers have picked up the options on four players.

It appears that the Cleveland Cavaliers want to keep some of their young players and continue to build their roster. The Cavs picked up the options on Collin Sexton, Darius Garland, Kevin Porter Jr., and Dylan Windler prior to their opening night victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

It is the fourth year option for Sexton and third-year options for Porter Jr., Garland, and Windler. The decisions to pick up options for Sexton and Garland were an absolute no-brainer. This duo is their staring guard combo and even carried the team to victory in their opener with 49 points and 11 assists between the two.

Porter Jr. showed a ton or promise as a rookie, but his off the court concerns could have given the team some pause over the decision. The second-year guard did not participate in the first game due to personal reasons.

Windler’s option is the intriguing one as he did not make his NBA debut until Wednesday night. Windler only made 1 of 5 shots (1-4 3PT) and finished with 2 steals. It is apparent that the Cavs believe that Windler can be a contributor for the long haul.

Cavaliers to be without four players for opener

The Cavs will be shorthanded for their season opener against the Charlotte Hornets.

When the Cleveland Cavaliers take the court against the Charlotte Hornets Wednesday night they will be without the services of four players. Matthew Dellavedova, Kevin Love, Kevin Porter Jr., and Dante Exum will miss the first game of the season.

Cavaliers head coach J.B. Bickerstaff will have to be a little bit creative with his rotations. This includes a strategy that many have wanted the team to employ for quite some time, staggering Collin Sexton and Darius Garland. The fit between those two was fairly questionable last season which led to speculation about whether they can be on the court at the same time. With Sexton as the “backup” point guard, it will allow Bickerstaff to explore options with his wings and big men.

Damyean Dotson, Dylan Windler, Issac Okoro, Cedi Osman, Larry Nance Jr., Dean Wade, Andre Drummond, JaVale McGee, and Thon Maker should give the Cavs a variety of different looks. Whether or not they are actually productive is a different story entirely. The Cavaliers are better off with the aforementioned players missing the game in the lineup. Although this does give the team a chance to get a better look at their depth in real game action. Best case scenario the Cavs win the game. Worst case scenario is that they get an extended look at their bench.

Kevin Porter Jr. has charges dismissed

The Cleveland Cavaliers guard will not face charges from the mid-November incident.

Last month Kevin Porter Jr. was arrested on firearms and suspected marijuana charges following a single vehicle crash. Those charges have been dismissed according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst.

According to Windhorst’s story on ESPN, the jury did not indict Porter on felony guns charges. Additionally, charges were dropped that included possession of marijuana and driving without a license.

Kevin Porter Jr. has not and will not appear in a preseason game for the Cavs, but could play in the season opener on December 23rd.

The Cleveland Cavaliers guard was arrested on weapons charges by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kevin Porter Jr. was arrested by the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Porter was charged with improperly handling a firearm in a motor vehicle.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol arrived to what was a single vehicle crash in Mahoning County early Sunday morning. Porter was not impaired or injured after the accident.

In addition to the firearm, there was allegedly a small amount of a substance suspected to be marijuana also in the vehicle.

A $4,000 bond was set for Porter and he has since been released.

The Cleveland Cavaliers released a statement Sunday following the events. The statement reads:

“We are aware of the situation involving Kevin Porter Jr. and are in the process of gathering information. We have spoken with Kevin and will continue to address this privately with him as the related process evolves.”

This story will be updated with more information when it becomes available.

Kevin Porter Jr. deserves a chance to start

Cleveland Cavaliers small forward Kevin Porter Jr. proved that he deserves a chance to start when the next NBA season begins.

There was one player that may have caught people by surprise last season, Kevin Porter Jr. The Cavaliers rookie just had that look and feel of a player that a team should build around. Porter quickly jumped ahead of other players on the roster as the most exciting player to watch when he is on the court. The offense just looks different with Porter on the court. Things that were not possible without Porter suddenly became a regular occurrence. There is just the it factor with Porter on the court. The fact of the matter is that Kevin Porter Jr. deserves a chance to start for the Cleveland Cavaliers next season.

As a rookie, Porter made 44.2% of his field goal attempts including 33.5% from three-point range. These numbers should improve as Porter matures as a player and gets more accustomed to the NBA style of play. The more time Porter player the more comfortable he will be. Putting Porter in the starting lineup can help accelerate this process.

If Kevin Porter Jr. is going to start that means moving Cedi Osman to a bench role. This is a scenario which would benefit both players. Porter should be an integral part of the Cavaliers offensively and moving Osman to the bench would be the best way to maximize his skill set. Porter alongside Collin Sexton, Darius Garland, Kevin Love, and Andre Drummond would be an interesting starting lineup to say the least. Perhaps this could lead to sorting out the best roles for Sexton and Garland while determine the long term outlooks for Love and Drummond. Either way, Porter needs to be in the starting lineup.

One final thing. The Cleveland Cavaliers are still a team that is little bit away from being a contender. Sorting out which players are going to be part of the long term future is crucial to the team building process. It’s time to put Kevin Porter Jr. in the starting lineup and figure out who the core players are going to be.

What do the Cavaliers have right now? It’s unknown

Figuring out exactly what the Cleveland Cavaliers are is not easy and attempting to assess exactly what they have is near impossible.

Attempting to define the Cleveland Cavaliers right now is difficult. What exactly are they? Are they a team that is as bad as their record is or were their early season struggles a direct result of their former coach? The team parted ways with John Beilein and eventually hired JB Bickerstaff as their new head coach. The Cavaliers appeared to be a better team with Bickerstaff, but it is not as simple as their record.

Judging the team based off their 5-6 record under JB Bickerstaff is not only foolish, it’s irresponsible. There is more to it than what the surface suggests. Cleveland’s opponents during the 11 games with Bickerstaff as their head coach were either missing key players or sub-par overall.

Collin Sexton saw a sharp uptick in performance under Bickerstaff which is very encouraging. Although a good portion of those games were without his regular backcourt partner Darius Garland. Garland missed some time due to injury and the team looked to be a bit more competent with the experienced Matthew Dellavedova stepping in on an as needed basis. Delly helped keep the ball moving and his teammates engaged. Something that was almost non-existent during the John Beilein era. Ideally Garland would have been able to come into the lineup and duplicate something resembling Delly’s efforts when he was supposed to return.

What does the Cavaliers roster consist of?

The team is imperfect in regards to construction and the team is built in two halves. Veterans and inexperience. The veterans include the likes of Kevin Love, Andre Drummond, Larry Nance Jr., Delly, and Tristan Thompson. Although it is worth mentioning that Thompson will be a free agent and is expected to depart in free agency. The young guys include Collin Sexton, Darius Garland, Kevin Porter Jr., and Dylan Windler. There are also a handful of players who are just there. Cedi Osman and Dante Exum to be exact. Their presence should not impact the future of the team in either way.

It’s about putting together a longterm plan and with how the roster is currently constructed it is quite difficult.

What are the Cavaliers supposed to do? They have an unknown when it comes to Andre Drummond and his team option. Drummond’s decision will likely impact what Kevin Love wants as they represented by the same agency. They could be with or without both to start next season, whenever that is. Then there is the backcourt. Are they going to give the combo of Sexton and Garland another go? Will they move one of them to the bench? Will one of them be traded? These are the questions they need to ask themselves during this idle time. Cleveland needs to identify a direction and head towards it. With their current roster they are pulling in two different directions, tanking and attempting to win, (however it is worth mentioning that their efforts in the latter have been quite lackluster).

What should they do? Build around Kevin Porter Jr.

Kevin Porter Jr. has shown that he has the most promise out of any of the young Cavaliers on the roster currently. When it comes to building around one player and evaluating their future, Kevin Porter Jr. should be who they build around. Find players who compliment Porter and are able to work with his playing style. If they are able to do that they might be able to get back on the right track and shake the woes of the second post-LeBron era.

Cavaliers to be without four players vs Bulls

The Cleveland Cavaliers will be without Tristan Thompson, Darius Garland, Dante Exum, and Kevin Porter Jr.in their matchup with the Chicago Bulls.

The Cleveland Cavaliers will be shorthanded yet again. Cleveland will be without four key players as they take on the Bulls in Chicago Tuesday.

Tristan Thompson left Sunday’s overtime win over the Spurs with an eye injury. Thompson is just the latest Cavs player added to the lengthy injury report. J.B. Bickerstaff may decide to have Larry Nance Jr. play a large amount of minutes yet again. Nance was on the court for just over 43 minutes in their overtime win over San Antonio Sunday.

Dante Exum is still working his way back from his ankle injury. If Exum is a able to return and contribute this season it would be a bonus.

Kevin Porter Jr. remains in concussion protocol. Porter is out indefinitely due to this injury. Concussions are not easy when putting together a timetable for return. No two people are alike when it comes to the recovery process. Hopefully Porter is able to return at some point this season, but it is important not to rush him back to play in meaningless games. It is about the big picture and longterm future in Cleveland for Porter, not participating in games for the team with the second-worst record in the league.

Darius Garland remains out which means that fan favorite Matthew Dellavdedova will continue see the increase in playing time. In the past four games Delly is averaging 9.5 assists per game, including 25 in the past two games. Dellavedova even set a career-high with 14 assists in Saturday’s win over Denver. The insertion of Delly into the starting lineup has helped the Cavaliers win two consecutive games against far superior opponents.

Kevin Porter Jr. in concussion protocol

Cleveland Cavaliers shooting guard Kevin Porter Jr. is in concussion protocol. Porter left the court in the 1st quarter of the Cavs loss to the Celtics.

At this point there is no timetable for return.

Kevin Porter Jr. will be able to return to the court upon meeting the following criteria.
  • He is without concussion-related symptoms at rest.
  • He has been evaluated by a physician.
  • Has successfully completed the NBA return-to-participation exertion protocol.
  • A team physician has discussed the return-to-participation process and decision with the Director of the NBA concussion program.
There is also a return to participation set of criteria.
  • A player diagnosed with a concussion should be regularly monitored by a member of the team’s medical staff for 24 hours for the evolution of symptoms. The player may not begin the return-to-participation exertion process until 24 hours after the time of injury. The initiation of the return-to-participation exertion process is determined by a team physician.
  • The return to participation process involves several steps of increasing exertion – from a stationary bike to jogging, to agility work, to non-contact team drills.
  • Each exertion stage should be monitored by the team’s medical staff. With each step, a focused neurological examination is performed and a player must be symptom-free to move to the next step. If a player is not symptom-free, he stops until he is and begins again at the last step he passed without any symptoms.
  • It’s important to note that there is no timeframe to complete the process. Each injury and player is different and recovery time can vary in each case.

There should be no hurry for Kevin Porter Jr. to return to action. The Cleveland Cavaliers are going nowhere and rushing him back is not in the best interest of anyone. It is about the long game when it comes to the Cavaliers and the future of Kevin Porter Jr. This season is about one thing and one thing only. Development. Outside of that, there is no actual need for Porter to return earlier than necessary. Their priority should be making sure Kevin Porter Jr. is healthy.

Without Kevin Porter Jr. other Cavs will need to step up

Without Porter the Cavs offense certainly will take a bit of hit. Collin Sexton is on a hot streak, but others will need to produce. The Cleveland Cavaliers will have a rather tough test ahead of them as they face the Denver Nuggets Saturday. Cleveland could again be without the likes of Darius Garland, Tristan Thompson, and Andre Drummond. If this is the case, it would be quite difficult for Cleveland to snap their losing streak. The Cavaliers will need to play an almost perfect game and yet that may not be enough. Denver is one of the better teams in the league while the Cavs are one of the worst.

Tip-off Saturday is at 7:30 P.M.
