Indians adjust roster before Saturday’s game

The Cleveland Indians made some roster moves Saturday, calling up Greg Allen and Josh Smith while sending down Eric Haase and Adam Plutko. The roster of the Cleveland Indians continues to be a revolving door. Cleveland has decided to call up Greg Allen and Josh Smith and send down Eric Haase and Adam Plutko. Eric Haase was called up initially as a backup catcher option while Roberto Perez was temporarily sidelined. The Tribe needed someone to backup Kevin Plawecki if needed and Haase was really their only option. In a similar manner Adam Plutko was called up due to injuries. Plutko started two games while the Indians are without both Corey Kluber and Mike Clevinger. Plutko enjoyed one good start against Baltimore and struggled through one bad start against Tampa. With Perez returnin...

Indians outfield performance in Arizona

The Cleveland Indians outfield was filled with question marks entering Spring Training and the majority of the early results so far are certainly encouraging. Although there are some not so encouraging performances in Arizona. Granted it is Spring Training and the sample sizes are small, there is some bright spots to focus on. Leonys Martin This is the ultimate feel good story. Leonys Martin saw last season end prematurely due to a life-threatening illness. There is no doubt that Martin wants to get back on the field and prove to everyone he is still capable of being a productive outfielder. In seven games Martin is slashing .474/.500/.789 with an OPS of 1.289. Martin has also displayed a bit of power, homering twice this spring. Martin has all but locked down a starting spot in the...

Indians: Who Bats First?

With the unfortunate news of injury to SS Francisco Lindor, many questions now arise for the Indians. How long will he be out? Will he be ready by opening day? Who will replace him at SS and who will bat leadoff now? Let's focus on the last question, because if the Indians had to start the season today, who could and would bat leadoff? Who even are the candidates for the job? What qualifies them for consideration? Those questions might not be as hard to answer as you think. Carlos Santana Carlos can be an opposing pitchers, managers, and fielders nightmare. He's a switch hitter with power from both sides of the plate. He has patience, an excellent eye and extreme discipline when at bat. He is not afraid to take a walk if his pitch isn't offered. When batting lefty, opposing teams...

Indians outfield still a work in progress

Even before the departure of Michael Brantley the Cleveland Indians outfield situation was far from enviable. Now that Brantley, Lonnie Chisenhall and Rajai Davis have new homes the team still has some work to do. Indians returning outfielders The Cleveland Indians will have Leonys Martin, Tyler Naquin and Greg Allen returning next season. There is also the uncertain status of Bradley Zimmer. Zimmer is rehabbing from shoulder surgery which originally had a recovery timeline of 8-12 months. It appears that any sort of production from Zimmer this season could be a bonus. Martin can provide modest production when in the lineup, nothing that cannot be duplicated from others currently on the roster. Naquin experienced an offensive surge before slumping and ultimately suffering a seas...

Indians getting surprising production from Greg Allen

When it comes to productive Indians outfielders Greg Allen does not instantly come to mind. However the usually light hitting outfielder has been a tough out at the plate as of late. Over his last 15 games Allen is slashing .383/.420/.447. This amounts to 18 hits in 47 at-bats. The Indians have desperately needed production from their outfield as the depth at the position is quite shallow. Lonnie Chisenhall has missed most of the season, Bradley Zimmer is out until sometime next year and Tyler Naquin may not return this year either. Leonys Martin is recovering from a life threatening bacterial infection and there is no timeline for his return. This leaves Cleveland with the group of Allen, Melky Cabrera, Rajai Davis and Brandon Guyer to man the outfield spots not occupied by Michael Brant...
