Cavaliers defeat Nuggets 99-87

The Cleveland Cavaliers went into Denver and came away with a surprising 99-87 win over the Nuggets.

When the clock hit 0.0 there was a double-digit differential on the scoreboard and somehow the team that won was the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs were in control of this game from pretty much the start, trailing by only 1 point early in the contest with only a couple of times where Denver tied the game. Wins against superior teams, they happen. However wins against those teams where the Cavs control from the beginning, not that common.

There is one specific area that pops out when evaluating the shooting performance of both teams. Both the Cavaliers and Nuggets were not proficient from three. Cleveland went 7-25 while Denver missed 29 of their 38 attempts from deep.

The player of the game for the Cavaliers is obvious, Jarrett Allen. Allen finished with 21 points and 16 rebounds (five offensive) in 37 minutes. Allen was not the only Cleveland big man to make an impact in this game as Kevin Love made some major contributions off the bench. In his 21 minutes of play Love made went 8-13 (1-4 3PT) and made all five free throws en route to scoring 22 points and grabbing six rebounds. The combination of Allen and Love really made a difference for the Cavaliers.

Darius Garland made his return to the starting lineup for Cleveland and was assist on seven baskets while scoring nine points. With Garland back that meant Ricky Rubio was relegated back to the bench. Like Garland, Rubio was more of a factor passing the ball as he finished with eight assists and seven points.

Now at 2-2 on the year Cleveland’s road trip is only going to get tougher as they take on the Los Angeles Clippers Wednesday night before taking on the Lakers the following night.

Cavs trade JaVale McGee to Nuggets

The Cleveland Cavaliers have agreed to trade the veteran center to the Denver Nuggets.

JaVale McGee is heading back west. The Cleveland Cavaliers have agreed to a deal which send the veteran big man to the Denver Nuggets per Shams Charania of The Athletic.

The return for Cleveland from Denver is Isaiah Hartenstein and two future protected second round picks according to Adrian Wojnarowski.

Hartenstein is a third year center that is currently averaging 3.5 points and 2.8 rebounds in 9.1 minutes per game. As far as the second round picks go they are an unprotected 2027 second rounder and 2023 second rounder that has protections to 46 according to Chris Fedor.

According to earlier reports the Cavs were not interested in buying out JaVale McGee. The only way that McGee would be playing for a new team is through a trade and that trade has now happened.

JaVale McGee did not appear in the Cavs win over the Bulls Wednesday. It was only a 33 game stint for McGee in Cleveland and he averaged 8 points and 5.2 rebounds in 15.2 minutes per game.

Cavaliers blown out by Nuggets

The Cleveland Cavaliers were no match for the Denver Nuggets as they were blown out 133-95, their fifth consecutive loss.

If the wheels were not completely off yet they are now. The Cleveland Cavaliers were on the wrong side of a nearly 40-point blowout of the Denver Nuggets. Denver just ran away with this game pretty early on and Cleveland simply could not fight back. This was the fifth-straight loss and the fourth by 10 or more points for the Cavaliers.

Two primary issues, the Cavs ineffective field goal percentage (38.3) and the fact the Nuggets outscored Cleveland in the paint 62-42. If Cleveland is unable to dominate in the paint they simply have no chance to at least stay competitive. The Cavaliers are not a good three-point shooing team, their 8-37 performance Wednesday is clear evidence of that.

Four Cavaliers eclipsed double-digits in scoring and none of them were the usual suspects. Jarrett Allen led Cleveland’s scoring effort with 18 points in 26 minutes of play. Isaac Okoro was the only other starter to break this barrier as he finished with 10 points on 5-12 shooting. Taurean Prince and Dylan Windler were the only other players to sore 11 or more points. Prince had 12 points on 4-10 shooting (3-5 3PT) and Winder had 11 on 3-7 shooting (1-5 3PT).

The issue for Cleveland is the trio of Collin Sexton, Darius Garland, and Andre Drummond combined for 15 points on 6-22 from the field. It was an unimpressive performance across the board for their three key starters. In fact, the Cavs bench outscored the starting lineup and that is never a combination for success. If the Cavaliers are going to get back into the win column this must change and fast.

Cleveland continues their road trip as they return to action Friday in Portland as they take on the Trail Blazers at 10:00 P.M.

Cavaliers look to snap four-game losing streak

The road trip continues for the Cleveland Cavaliers as they look to snap their current four-game losing streak in Denver.

It was a close game last time out for the Cleveland Cavaliers, but they were not able to come away with a win against the Phoenix Suns. The now 10-15 Cavs will take on the 12-11 Denver Nuggets as they look to snap their four-game losing streak. The Nuggets are on a losing streak of their own with three straight losses and losing four of their previous five .While this does seem similar to the Cavs, the Nuggets won the previous five games prior to this stretch. Cleveland is currently 2-8 in the last 10 games as their slide continues to get worse.

There is one player to instantly talk about when it comes to the Nuggets, Nikola Jokic. Jokic is Denver’s leader in points (27.5), rebounds (11.5), assists (8.5), steals (1.6), and blocks (0.7) per game. If the Cavaliers are going to have any chance in this game they will need to slow down Jokic, as stopping him simply will not happen.

Cleveland does have a combination that could give Jokic some problems. In the absence of Larry Nance Jr., the Cavs will be deploying both Andre Drummond and Jarrett Allen in the starting lineup.

As far as other players go Jamal Murray will also provide problems for Cleveland. Murray is averaging 18.6 points, 4.4 assists, and 3.9 rebounds per game. Like Jokic, Murray is more than capable of leading the team to victory and the Cavaliers must be prepared for that.

NBA practice facilities continue to be shut down

More and more NBA teams have shut down their practice facilities due to members of the organization testing positive for COVID-19.

This is something that seemed inevitable. NBA teams having to shut down their practice facilities before their restart set to take place in Orlando. Even with potential Bio-Domes in Orlando and possibly Chicago, nothing seems as safe as they may seem.

The Milwaukee Bucks, Sacramento Kings, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Clippers, Denver Nuggets, Phoenix Suns, and Brooklyn Nets have shut down their practice facilities at one point or another. The fact that members of these organizations are testing positive now means that others could later, possibility infiltrating the Bio-Dome in Orlando or Chicago.

The problem is that no matter how careful they are no bubble is secure. There will always be issues with keeping everything contained. No matter how hard the NBA tries, the Bio-Dome is not the solution that everyone hoped it would be. Even Bud and Doyle found a way in and out and they were morons. (Yes, I know it was a movie, but you get the idea).

The closer the NBA gets to returning and more organizations are having positive COVID-19 tests they must ask themselves one thing. Should they even bother coming back? As time goes on it seems like that answer should be no.
