Jarrett Allen goes west in mock trade proposal

Could Cavs big man Jarrett Allen be heading west? That has been proposed in a mock trade appearing on Lake Show Life

The deal would see Jarrett Allen go to the Lakers in exchange for Rui Hachimura and a 2025 second-round selection courtesy of the LA Clippers. This trade is said to benefit both teams from the author’s point of view.

“In the end, this trade is a trade of fit for both teams. The Cavaliers are looking to build around Mobley, which means putting shooters on the court at all times. The Lakers need another reliable center to fulfill their promise to Davis.

While the point about building around Evan Mobley is incredibly valid, this is only taking the surface into account. It is not about the removal of Jarrett Allen, but the insertion of Hachimura into what Cleveland already has on the roster.

The Cavs went out and signed Max Strus and Georges Niang this past off-season to supplement their roster. This is in addition to already having Isaac Okoro and Dean Wade on the roster. The Cavs also selected Emoni Bates in the second round of this most recent draft. This is already a pretty crowded group of players. It would only get more crowded by adding Hachimura into that mix.

Cleveland already dealt two players this last off-season. Cedi Osman and Lamar Stevens were sent packing to clear some roster clutter. Unless they are not sold on Okoro and Wade being contributors and decide to also deal them, this trade does not make a lot of sense for Cleveland. It’s not about the talent of Hachimura. It is about how his addition would impact the current group of players already on the roster.

So as far as this mock trade sending Jarrett Allen to the Lakers is concerned, it would be difficult to see the Cavs accepting this deal.

Jarrett Allen named way too early trade deadline candidate

Advertisements

Could the Cleveland Cavaliers move one of their big men by the NBA Trade Deadline? That possibility was suggested in an article identifying 1 Way-too-early 2024 trade deadline candidate for all 30 teams. Jarrett Allen was the Cavs’ entry on this list and there is a pretty solid case made for it.

Not only do they have to take a tangible step forward in their overall team development to try and sell Donovan Mitchell on their future, but they also have to figure out what the dynamic is going to be with the emerging Evan Mobley

There are a couple of things to take away from this. First off is fit as it became very questionable this past season. The Cavs were lacking enough threats from outside the paint and having Allen as a permanent resident near the basket bogs things up down there. This leads us to the next point.

Figuring out how things will work with Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley. Mobley is clearly the future in Cleveland while Allen has been a solid addition to what used to be a very underwhelming group of players who did not fit together. Now Allen has found himself in that position. Unless the Cavs can convince Allen to come off the bench, he may not be in Cleveland long-term.

Lastly is selling Donovan Mitchell on a future in Cleveland. It was already reported that the Cavs are “rolling out the red carpet” for the star. While at first, it seems like moving Allen would be the opposite, finding a way to build the right supporting cast around him to convince him to stay would prove beneficial.

Is a trade on the horizon? Not necessarily, but the fact Allen’s name continues to appear signals that his time with the Cavs may be coming to an end sooner rather than later.

Jarrett Allen an option for New Orleans? Cavs big man named possible target for Pelicans

Advertisements

Trade rumors involving Jarrett Allen just never seem to go away. Unlike those involving Donovan Mitchell, this seems to be rooted more in reality. There are concerns about the long-term viability of Allen and Evan Mobley and moving the former could lead to better results for the latter.

A discussion-style article between William Guillory and John Hollinger appeared in The Athletic with Jarrett Allen being mentioned as a possibility to go to New Orleans. Guillory mentioned the Cavs’ center as an option for the Pelicans.

With Valančiūnas heading into the final year of his deal, the Pels have been sniffing around for other options in recent months. There have been rumors of them exploring potential deals for Jarrett Allen or Isaiah Stewart, but nothing has materialized quite yet.

William Guillory

But when it came to whether or not a realistic deal could be made between the two sides, Hollinger believes if there was one it would have already been made.

I imagine if there was a realistic deal that satisfied both sides, Allen would already be in town. The Cavs would likely be looking for things in an Allen deal the Pels either can’t provide or would be extremely reluctant to (i.e., Murphy, Dyson Daniels, Lakers pick); part of what makes filling this spot such a challenge is finding the right cost in terms of assets.

John Hollinger

That is the difficulty when it comes to potential trades of Jarrett Allen. It has been stated previously that Allen is more valuable to the Cavs than anyone else. With that in mind, getting a fair return in their eyes will be difficult. This is not to say that Cleveland should lower their demands by any means. It is just that he is valued much differently by other organizations. This fact is something to consider when discussing possible trades of their starting center.

There has not been any indication that the Cavs are shopping Jarrett Allen at this time. That has not stopped teams from approaching them with possible trade offers though. It is possible that the Cavs alter their plans during the season based on how things paly out. For now, expect Allen in Cleveland on Opening Night.

Cavs still may move Jarrett Allen

Advertisements

One of the most popular players mentioned in trade rumors this offseason is coming up yet again. Cleveland Cavaliers center Jarrett Allen may still be on the move.

According to a report from Marc Stein, the Cavs have not exactly closed the door on trading Allen.

On the same subject, there have been some whispers this week that the Cavaliers are more open to trading Jarrett Allen than advertised for the obvious reasons: He appeared to struggle with the moment at various points of the Cavaliers’ five-game exit to the Knicks.

This seems to be a recurring theme for the Cavs when it comes to Jarrett Allen. The Cavs rejected trade offers for Allen and the Pelicans have recently approached Cleveland about his availability.

There comes a point when something is no longer just a rumor or hypothetical trade cast into the void of the internet. Everyone knows the saying, where there’s smoke there’s fire, well it appears to be trending towards red hot in Cleveland.

Allen is a solid player and his effectiveness in a different system on a different team is questionable. With that being said, it does appear that the Cavs are capped in regards to how far they can progress with him in their starting lineup. With the persistent rumors of Allen popping up it does seem that the Cavaliers front office is aware of this fact and are exploring every avenue to potentially improve the team by (almost) any means necessary.

Pelicans called Cavs about Jarrett Allen

Advertisements

The New Orleans Pelicans reached out to the Cleveland Cavaliers about the availability of center Jarrett Allen according to a report from Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fischer. New Orleans is looking for a better rim-protector than what they have currently in Jonas Valanciunas.

New Orleans made one call, sources said, to Cleveland about obtaining Jarrett Allen.

Jake Fischer on New Orleans calling about Jarrett Allen

This comes from a larger section of the report centered on the San Antonio Spurs and their attempts to acquire and pair Naz Reid with first overall pick Victor Wembanyama. The mentioning of Valanciunas comes as a secondary option for the Spurs after missing out on Reid.

For Cleveland, moving Allen would appear to be a precursor to something bigger. There are legitimate questions about the long-term viability of the Cavs front court pairing of Allen and Evan Mobley. With Mobley being the player with the higher ceiling, Allen is the more likely player to be moved. The Cavs are hoping that Mobley can make the expected leap to become the centerpiece of their team moving forward. Moving Allen may be a necessity in order for that leap to happen.

While the Cavs would take a hit defensively if they move Jarrett Allen, the hope is the trade-off for more scoring pays off. Cleveland is clearly in need of more spacing and pace. Having two big men on the floor at the same time can bog down their offense. If the Cavaliers move Allen, slide Mobley to center, and find an offensive upgrade along the way, it could take the team to the next level.

So far Cleveland has rejected trade offers for Allen, but all it takes is the right trade proposal for that to change.

76ers out of their minds in asking world from Cavs for Tobias Harris

Advertisements

It was just a few days ago that the Cleveland Cavaliers were expressing interest in Philadelphia 76ers forward Tobias Harris. Harris was rumored to possibly be on the move before the draft and it does not appear any sort of transaction of any type is coming soon considering how much they want in return for his services.

According to a report, Philadelphia wanted the Cavs to trade Evan Mobley, Jarrett Allen, and some sort of draft compensation for Tobias Harris. This is a completely ridiculous ask and cannot be taken seriously. The 76ers have tried this tactic before when trying to move others in the past, particularly Ben Simmons. While swapping the almost useless Simmons for James Harden is a clear upgrade, it did not lead to achieving their ultimate goal.

From a Cavs perspective this would be an instant no to the trade compensation that Philadelphia requested. Harris is a fine player, but not a franchise altering one. The trade package that Philly wanted is too much for a player such as Harris.

The main problem is Mobley being included. Mobley is a player that Cleveland is banking on to be a major piece of their future. Whether he lives up to the lofty expectations is up for debate, but engaging in a non-sensical, irrational, and delusional trade request as this is a complete waste of time. Unless a player that would be coming back to the Cavs was an already established and young legitimate superstar, Mobley is not going anywhere any time soon.

If it was Allen a draft pick and some other assortment of players that did not include any other starters it would be one thing. But the ask is way too much and honestly quite laughable in the grand scheme of things. Let’s be real here, there is not one team that would accept a similar request from Philly for Tobias Harris. Harris is very much a complimentary player and giving up two starters is a, well, non-starter.

Cavs rejected trade offers for Jarrett Allen

Jarrett Allen may have been attractive enough to receive trade inquiries from other teams, but the Cleveland Cavaliers are not interested in moving him at this time according to a report from Chris Fedor from Cleveland.com.

Fedor specifically mentions Dallas as a team that was gauging Cleveland’s interest in a deal that would send Allen to the Mavs. Any sort of trade offer coming from Dallas did not move the needle enough as Allen is still a Cavalier.

Do not expect the trade talks about Jarrett Allen to end any time soon. Allen is a solid defensive player that can be a very attractive piece to many teams. Even with Koby Altma wanting to keep “core players” together, the team should still listen on what teams are willing to offer for Allen. Cleveland’s early postseason exit was not Allen’s finest hour and probably should have been the tipping point about his future here.

Even though the Cavs are not actively shopping Jarrett Allen to potential suitors, they probably should be. Allen’s lack of offensive diversity can make things a big crowded near the basket. If Cleveland were to acquire a big man capable scoring outside the paint it would create some much needed space for the likes of Darius Garland, Donovan Mitchell, and Evan Mobley.

There is still a lot of time between now and when the season starts.

While the Cavs intend to retain Jarrett Allen for next season it would not be a huge surprise to see a move involving Allen in order to shuffle the roster a bit while their problem of finding a starting caliber wing player to insert into their starting lineup. Allen is far from an untouchable player and if there is a reasonable trade out there to improve the team in other areas it should receive serious consideration.

Cavs without three versus Wizards Friday

Advertisements

The Cleveland Cavaliers will be without three players when they take on the Washington Wizards.

Friday will see the Cavs playing host to the Washington Wizards as they look to get back into the win column. Cleveland will be without Jarrett Allen, Sam Merrill, and Isaiah Mobley in the contest according to reports.

Allen continues to miss time with an eye injury with an uncertain timetable for his return to play. The Cavs have gone 2-1 over their last three Allen-less games although their two wins were against the lowly Charlotte Hornets with their loss coming against Philadelphia. Mobley has just one appearance for Cleveland over the last 12 games while Merrill has two over the last seven.

The Cavaliers should, emphasis on should, be able to take care of business against the Wizards with their current available players. If not, it just shows how integral Allen is to the success of the Cavs.

Cavs best Celtics in overtime, again

Advertisements

Cleveland defeated Boston in overtime 114-113.

For the second time in less than a week it was the Cleveland Cavaliers taking down the Boston Celtics in overtime. While the Cavs margin of victory was not as large as their last meeting (nine points), a win is a win and Cleveland will certainly take it.

It was a back and forth all game with both teams holding double-digits leads (BOS 12, CLE 11). The fact each team was able to rally is even more impressive considering their lack of success from three-point range. Cleveland was just 11-39 while Boston 11-41 from deep. These shortcomings were made up in other areas. The Cavs held a 56-42 advantage in points in the paint, the Celtics meanwhile made 26 of 27 free throws compared to Cleveland’s 19-24.

What this game come down to was scoring at opportune times. The Cavaliers were able to build a five-point lead with less than two minutes remaining in overtime. This small lead proved to be more than enough as Boston’s two final shot attempts in the last 30 seconds down one were not successful.

Player notes

Darius Garland returned to the Cavs lineup for the first time since the season opener. Garland finished with 29 points, 12 assists, five rebounds, and three assists in 42 minutes. The return of Garland did not disrupt the Cavaliers flow on offense as they continued to be an incredibly productive unit.

Cleveland’s second-highest scorer was Donovan Mitchell. Mitchell has proven to be such an upgrade for this Cavs team as his outstanding play night in and night out provides Cleveland with another weapon on offense. It was a casual 25 point, six assist, four rebound, two block, one steal night for newest Cavalier.

Jarrett Allen finishing with a double-double is pretty much a sure thing at this point and Wednesday was no exception. Allen’s 14 point and 14 rebound performance is expected at this point as his presence on this Cavs team has proven to be incredibly valuable.

Looking ahead

Cleveland is off Thursday before heading out on a five-game road trip which lasts until the middle of November. First up is Detroit, followed by both teams in Los Angeles, then Sacramento, and finishing off in Golden State. Their 6-1 record and status as second place in the Eastern Conference will be put to the test.

Cavaliers top Celtics in OT 132-123

The Cleveland Cavaliers take down the Boston Celtics powered by impressive performances from Donovan Mitchell and Caris LeVert.

It was going to take some spectacular performances from multiple Cleveland Cavaliers if they were going to take down the Boston Celtics without Darius Garland. The Cavs were able to rally from a 15-point deficit and tie the game in regulation before pulling away in overtime. This was the type of character building win that this young Cavs team needs.

Leading the way was Donovan Mitchell and Caris LeVert combining for 82 points (41 each). Mitchell was 15-25 from the floor (5-9 3PT) and made all six free throw attempts. LeVert made 12 of 21 field goal attempts (6-8 3PT) and went 11-12 from the charity stripe. This was not the typical performance as the duo managed to make some Cavaliers history. Mitchell and LeVert are only the second pair of teammates to score 40 or more points in a single game. Being in the same stratosphere as LeBron James and Kyrie Irving’s performances in the 2016 NBA Finals is impressive.

The Cavaliers big men also pulled their weight in this contest. Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen each finished with a double-double, 19 points, 10 rebounds and 12 points, 11 rebounds respectively.

Cleveland is now 4-1 on the year and have won four straight without Garland. This was the first notable win of the season for the Cavs as they have not played a particularly difficult slate of opponents thus far. That being said the important takeaway here is that the Cavaliers are winning and that is all that matters at the end of the day.

Up next are the New York Knicks at home Sunday at 6:00 P.M.
