Cavaliers lose 102-101 to Chicago Bulls

The Cleveland Cavaliers faced off with the Chicago Bulls for the second time this preseason and lost by a score of 102-101.

It was less than a week ago that the Cleveland Cavaliers were destroyed by the Chicago Bulls in a 36-point loss. While this game was much closer, it was still a loss for the Cavs as the Bulls scored four points in the final 1:20 to hand Cleveland the loss.

This time out the Cavaliers were without both Collin Sexton and Darius Garland, thrusting Ricky Rubio and Lauri Markkanen into the starting lineup. Markkanen scored a team-high 18 points on 8-14 from the field while Rubio added nine points of his own in addition to a game-high nine assists.

The Cavs also got an impressive effort from rookie Evan Mobley, scoring 15 points on 7-13 shooting along with ten rebounds, four assists, three blocks, and two steals. Cleveland’s other big man, Jarrett Allen, scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds in 26 minutes.

Cedi Osman was the Cavs leading bench scorer with 11 points on 5 of 8 from the field. Dylan Windler’s nine points was the second-highest reserve scoring total in the contest.

This was the first game that the Cavaliers did not turn the ball over 20 or more times, so there is progress in that area. Cleveland also led in the assists department 32-18, again progress. The regular season is around the corner and even though there are players to be excited about, it is going to be a long season for the Cavaliers.

The Cavs will take on the Indiana Pacers Friday for their final preseason game.

Cavaliers lose ninth straight game with 20-point loss

A 110-90 loss to the Dallas Mavericks has resulted in the ninth consecutive loss for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Make that nine straight losses for the Cleveland Cavaliers. It was an unsurprising loss for the Cavs as they are winding down what is yet another disappointing campaign. Cleveland was without Darius Garland and Kevin Love for this contest. That was in addition to the players who are out for the season for the Cavaliers. With that being said, even at full strength this team would be no match for the Dallas Mavericks.

This game was pretty much over from the start. Dallas held a 14-point lead after 1st quarter which only grew to 25 at the half. The Cavaliers only scored 37 points in the first two quarters combined which only signified their lackluster performance. While Cleveland did outscore Dallas 53-48 in the second half it is moot since the Mavs won decisively 110-90.

It was another empty scoring performance for Collin Sexton. Sexton scored 18 of his team-high 27 points in the second half, with six of his nine makes coming at a time where the game was all but decided. Six of Sexton’s nine made free throws also came in the final two quarters as well.

Cedi Osman was the Cavaliers second-highest scorer which is emblematic of why the team is in the basement of the Eastern Conference right now. Osman went 2-10 from three-point range which is the complete opposite of a strategy that would be considered a winning one.

Cavaliers lose to Wizards 119-110

The Cleveland Cavaliers kept up, but ultimately fell short against the Washington Wizards.

Everything came down to the final minutes and unfortunately the Cleveland Cavaliers were not able to pull through against the Washington Wizards. The issue for Cleveland came in the 4th as they were outscored by Washington 32-17 as the Wizards came back from a small deficit and came out with a nine-point victory.

The Cavaliers came into this game without the services of Collin Sexton. Sexton missed this game due to a concussion and his return date is not known at this time. Being down one of their better players definitely played a factor when they found themselves in a situation where they needed him most.

Garland runs the show

As mentioned above, the Cavaliers were without Collin Sexton, meaning it was Darius Garland who ran Cleveland’s offense. Garland finished with a team-high in points (28) and assists (9). The second-year guard made 4 of 8 three-pointers and 9 of 20 field goals overall.

Allen steps up

In need of some scoring it was Jarrett Allen who stepped up big for the Cavaliers. Allen went 10-12 from the field and 7-9 from the free throw line en route to 27 points and 12 rebounds. This a performance that Cleveland needs to see from Allen on a regular basis, especially if they view him as part of their future.

Surprising night from Cedi

Cedi Osman made his first appearance since April 14th against the Hornets and had a surprising scoring effort. Osman scored 19 points while making 3 of 6 three-pointers and 7 of 12 overall. Osman can be a frustrating player to watch at times, but it is games like these which show promise. At this point in time Osman is more likely than not just an inconsistent player.

Shorthanded Cavaliers lose to Pelicans 116-109

The Cleveland Cavaliers were without several key players and still were competitive in a 115-106 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans.

This game was always going to be an uphill battle for the Cleveland Cavaliers even if they were 100% healthy. The problem is that they weren’t and ultimately that played a factor in their loss to the New Orleans Pelicans. Cleveland was without Collin Sexton, Darius Garland, Jarrett Allen, and Larry Nance Jr. The lineup that was put together looked more like a surrender lineup than a competitive one. But credit where credit is due, the Cavaliers put up a much bigger fight than anyone could have expected.

Cleveland came out firing with a starting lineup featuring Mathew Dellavedova, Isaac Okoro, Dean Wade, Kevin Love, and Isaiah Hartenstein. The fact the Cavaliers scored 39 points with this starting five is sort of amazing. Cleveland even held a first half lead and played well in the 3rd quarter, holding a 94-90 lead heading into the 4th. The problem is that at some point they were going to run out of gas and that was during the final quarter. Cleveland was outscored 26-15 in the 4th and that lead to what seemed inevitable from the beginning, a Cavs loss.

Game notes

The Cavaliers surprisingly made more three-pointers than the Pelicans (13-7). The fact Cleveland attempted 40 shots from deep is sort of perplexing considering their usual low volume and low 3PT% on the year.

Dean Wade led the Cavaliers in scoring with 21 points, a new career-high. Wade did most of his damage from deep as he made five three-pointers.

Isaac Okoro had himself a nice night offensively, finishing with 19 points on a 6-10 shooting effort including 2-4 from three. Okoro also made all five free throw attempts on the night.

Apparently Kevin Love was on a mission to essentially shoot three-pointers as he went 5-14 in that regard and 1-3 from two. Love was tied with Okoro for the second-highest Cavaliers scoring effort.

Matthew Dellavedova was supposed to be on a minutes restriction, but was on the court the most of any starter (34 minutes). Delly finished 10 assists and 7 points on the night on a pretty ugly shooting effort (3-11).

It was a rare efficient shooting night from Cedi Osman as he went 7-11 and scored 15 points. Osman also had 7 assists, 3 rebounds, 1 block, and 1 steal on the night.

Like many others, Taurean Prince was not a consistent shooter for the Cavaliers. Prince went 4-11 (0-4 3PT) and ended up with 11 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 block.

The Cavaliers have a few days off before returning to action April 14th in Charlotte.

Warriors interested in Cedi Osman

The Golden State Warriors have expressed interest in acquiring the Cleveland Cavaliers small forward

According to Sam Amico of FourtyEightMinutes, the Golden State Warriors have interest in Cleveland Cavaliers forward Cedi Osman.

Meanwhile, one source said the Golden State Warriors have interest in Osman (as do the Los Angeles Clippers and Brooklyn Nets), and the Warriors may be willing to part with one of their own young players in return.

Sam Amico on Warriors reported interest in Cedi Osman

This report comes after the initial report that the Cavs could also move Taurean Prince and JaVale McGee. Cleveland is in sort of a sell-off mode and these are players they could very well move.

What it comes down to is evaluating whether or not these players are part of the future of the Cavs. Prince could be a maybe while McGee is an obvious no. In regards to Cedi Osman, it seems like he is more of a complimentary bench player on a contending team with several stars, something that Cleveland is clearly far away from. Osman just does not seem to be the right fit with the current young Cavs and moving on from him would may be in the best interest of both parties.

Cavaliers could move Osman, Prince, McGee

The Cleveland Cavaliers could make some moves to reshape their roster before the trade deadline.

There are certain players on the Cleveland Cavaliers roster that have been identified as their core players. Those players do not include Cedi Osman, Taurean Prince, and JaVale McGee. Shams Charania of The Athletic noted that the Cavs could move any or all of these three players. Adding to his report about Andre Drummond, Charania had this to say.

Cleveland has also been open to discussing forwards Cedi Osman and Taurean Prince and center JaVale McGee in the right deal, sources said.

Shams Charania on Osman, Prince, and McGee

The fact that these players have come up is hardly surprising. The initial acquisition of McGee had midseason flip written all over it. When the Cavs landed Prince there was a similar sentiment, although retaining him as part of the supporting cast was a possibility. As far as Osman goes, Cleveland has given him every chance to prove himself and he has failed to do so. While the role he has played for the most part has not been a great fit, it is clear to everyone that he shouldn’t play big minutes for any team. A role in spurts off the bench would be perfect, but that has not manifested consistently in Cleveland.

Another poor second half leads to Cavaliers loss

Advertisements

It was another disappointing second half for the Cleveland Cavaliers as they were outscored 63-42 by the Milwaukee Bucks.

For the second straight game it was a poor second half which led to a loss for the Cleveland Cavaliers. It was a 22-point loss to the Clippers on Wednesday and it was an 18-point loss to the Bucks Friday. The Cavs actually held a 63-60 lead going into the half, but they were simply unable to keep up with Milwaukee. The game was still relatively competitive until about 10 minutes left in the 4th quarter, the Bucks were able to stretch the lead to double-digits shortly after and it continued to grow. It was a 123-105 final score in Cleveland as they fall to 10-13 on the year.

This was just a case of the Cavaliers not being on the same tier as the Bucks. Milwaukee is a championship caliber team while Cleveland is a team that might squeak into the playoffs. The fact that the Bucks shut down the Cavs offense for a large part of the second half just shows that they have a long way to go.

Cleveland’s’ backcourt duo of Collin Sexton and Darius Garland scored 19 and 13 points respectively and both had 4 assists each.

Andre Drummond was the Cavs second-highest scorer with 18 points. Drummond also had 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals.

It was another spot start for Taurean Prince as Larry Nance Jr. was unavailable for this game. Prince was 4-7 from three-point range and missed his other three field goal attempts, finishing with 12 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block.

Cedi Osman continues to be sort of frustrating to watch. Osman took 8 threes and only made 2. Osman finished the game 4-11 from the field and made both free throws while adding 3 rebounds and 1 assist to his final line.

A perfect shooting night for Jarrett Allen which surpassingly included a three-pointer. Allen was 3-3 from the field with the aforementioned three and made all six free throw attempts. Allen had 13 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks off the bench.

The Cavaliers are back in action Saturday night for Game 2 of this back-to-back matchup with the Bucks.

Cavaliers lack of three-pointers is a problem

Advertisements

The Cleveland Cavaliers are not taking nearly enough three-pointers and it is causing problems in the win-loss department.

If it was not already apparent it became clear as day Wednesday night, the Cleveland Cavaliers have a three-point problem. In their 121-99 loss to the Clippers, Cleveland only attempted 10 shots from deep and made 4. Meanwhile Los Angeles went 20-34 and completely obliterated the Cavs defense. Not only was Cleveland’s lack of three-point attempts disheartening to see, it is alarming that how much better Los Angeles is from deep.

The Cavaliers attempt (26.1) and make (9.3) the fewest three-pointers per game. When perusing the other teams at the bottom there is a common trait among most of those teams, they aren’t good. Outside of the Lakers and 76ers, most of these teams are middle of the road on a good day. Cleveland’s three-point percentage as a team is not bad, they convert 35.7% of their attempts from deep which is tied for 19th with Detroit in that area. Again, not great, but not terrible either. Although it is worth mentioning that the teams immediately above and below the Cavs attempt and make more three-pointers per game.

The Cavs have options, they just need to take them

Looking at Cleveland’s individual players and their respective performances from deep they have a few options that should be called upon for a few more per game. Collin Sexton, Darius Garland, and Taurean Prince all convert above 40% from three. Larry Nance Jr. and Dylan Winder both make around 38% shots from deep and Cedi Osman’s 37% isn’t completely terrible. The fact that Osman attempts the most threes per game (6.3) is a massive problem. Sexton leads the Cavs in 3PT% yet attempts 3.7 per game. Garland and Prince attempt the same amount of threes (4.1), registering second and third respectively for Cleveland.

While there is somewhat of a focus on playing with big men for Cleveland, they need their best shooters to take more threes. Cleveland currently has zero active big men who can shoot from deep and that causes somewhat of an issue offensively. The potential return of Kevin Love would help in that area, but the fact of the matter is rostering bigs who are not able to shoot from deep has caused some issues. Love can help unlock their offense a little bit while still playing Andre Drummond and Jarrett Allen big minutes. If they can find a way to mesh the playing styles of these three players they might be able to make games like Wednesday night not become a recurring theme.

Cavaliers fight hard, fall short vs. Lakers

Advertisements

The Cleveland Cavaliers put up a tough fight but were just no match for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Absolutely no one will fault the Cleveland Cavaliers and the effort they put forth in their 115-108 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers Monday. Cleveland refused to give up and fought all the way to the end, but were just not able to put together enough to come out victorious.

There were a few times early that is looked like a repeat of Sunday night’s dismal performance could be in the cards, but that was not the case. Instead of rolling over and accepting this loss, the Cavs rallied and pushed the Lakers to the edge. Ultimately, LeBron James was the difference for Los Angeles as he dropped a casual 46 points on the Cavs.

Big game ‘Dre

Andre Drummond led the Cavaliers in points and rebounds with 25 and 17 respectively. Drummond putting together games like this is essentially the expectation this season. The Cavaliers big man has been a consistent source of scoring and rebounding that has made an impact for Cleveland so far this season.

Streaky Cedi

If there is one thing that everyone knows about Cedi Osman is that he is streaky. There are times where Cedi can be red hot and others where he is ice cold, tonight was the former. Osman made 5 of 7 three-point attempts and was instrumental early in the 3rd quarter when the Cavaliers cut into and eventually took the lead. Osman was Cleveland’s second-highest scorer with 20 points.

Spotty Sexton

As per usual, Collin Sexton made some incredible plays and drained a couple three-pointers. The only issue is that this was a volume shooting effort as Sexton went 6-17 from the field. This was tied for Sexton’s worst shooting performance this season which was a loss against the New York Knicks in December. Things should look up for Sexton once his running mate returns to the starting lineup.

Garland rounding into form

This was expected to be the last game that Darius Garland comes off the bench while working back from injury. Garland played 26 minutes and was impressive in his limited minutes. The other half of SexLand finished with 11 points on 5 of 10 shooting and 5 assists. Once Garland is reincorporated back into starting lineup it should make a huge difference for the Cavaliers.

The Cavaliers will look to snap their two-game losing streak when they take on the Detroit Pistons Wednesday at 7:00 P.M.

Cavaliers unable to keep up with Magic

Advertisements

The Cleveland Cavaliers were unable to overcome being shorthanded as they lost to the Orlando Magic on the road by a score of 103-83.

The Cleveland Cavaliers did not have a great outing in their first of back-to-back meetings with the Orlando Magic. Cleveland came in shorthanded as they were without Darius Garland and Isaac Okoro coming into the game. Dante Exum exited with a leg injury and did not return, further putting pressure on the shorthanded Cavs. The Cavaliers were only down by 2 points going into the half, but were flat in the second half. Orlando outscored Cleveland 52-34 in the final 2 quarters which led to the Cavaliers loss.

It was not a great shooting night for the Cavs as they struggled in every area. Cleveland shot 38.4% from the field, 35.7% from three-point range, and 58.3% from the free throw line. Add that to being out-rebounded (47-62) and having fewer assists (20-22), things were just not going the Cavs way. Cleveland having to play shorthanded certainly did not help matters and having to adjust their rotations in game due to the injury to Exum did not make things any easier.

Cavaliers scoring led by Collin Sexton

Collin Sexton has become a reliable night in-night out contributor for the Cavaliers and that is something most were unsure of ever happening. Sexton again led the Cavs scoring effort with 24 points on 10 of 19 from the field. Young Bull made 2 of 4 three-point attempts and both shots from the free throw line.

Andre Drummond’s double-double streak continues

Make that seven straight double-doubles for Andre Drummond, extending his team record he claimed in the previous game. Drummond finished with 10 points and 14 rebounds (5 offensive) while adding 4 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block to his final line.

Damyean Dotson steps up in spot start

The Cavaliers played without Darius Garland and Damyean Dotson stepped into the starting lineup and played admirably. Dotson finished with 16 points on 6-10 shooting (3-6 3PT), 2 assists, 1 rebound, and 1 steal. When Garland does return it would be wise to continue giving Dotson playing time off the bench, especially if Exum is going to miss time.

Cedi Osman leads bench scoring, but is not efficient

The good news, Cedi Osman was Cleveland’s leading bench scorer. The bad news, it was on a 6-14 shooting night. Osman did manage to make 4 of 8 three-point attempts and both free throws in 38 minutes of playing time. Osman did add 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block to round out his night.
