Guardians sign Jose Ramirez to five-year extension

After lengthy negotiations and trade speculation, the Cleveland Guardians have signed Jose Ramirez to an extension. It is a five-year deal worth $124 million and it includes a full no-trade clause. This extension brings his total money owed to $150 million.

This comes just a day after it was reported that the San Diego Padres were looking to acquire Jose Ramirez and just a few weeks after Toronto was rumored to be interested. Jeff Passan also noted that if a long-term deal could not be reached, the expectation was that Ramirez would be traded. Adding that the Padres believed they had a chance to acquire Ramirez.

For Cleveland, this is a massive win as they now have a marquee player under contract for the foreseeable future as they launch their rebrand. There were plenty of questions of whether an extension would get done as this was beginning to follow a similar path to the eventual trade of Francisco Lindor. With Jose Ramirez under contract, the Guardians can now shift their attention to other positions of need and the possibility of extending Shane Bieber.
