Cookie crumbles in Indians loss

Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Carlos “Cookie” Carrasco was unable to get out of the first inning in Friday’s 8-1 loss in Kansas City.

The last thing the Cleveland Indians needed with Jefry Rodriguez making his debut Saturday was a short outing from Carlos Carrasco. Unfortunately that is just what they got. Carrasco was only able to go 2/3 of an inning in Friday’s loss. Cookie allowed six runs on six hits while only striking out one. Carrasco’s velocity on his fastball was down and his breaking pitches did not break. Just about everything was over the heart of the plate and Kansas City made him pay. With Carrasco’s short outing the Indians bullpen is in a rough spot.

After Carrasco’s exit the Indians went with a parade of bullpen arms. Nick Wittgren, Tyler Olson, Dan Otero, Oliver Perez, Jon Edwards and Neil Ramirez all followed Carrasco. Olson was the only reliever to allow a run. An unearned run did come across to score with Perez on the mound in the sixth inning.

Cleveland’s extensive bullpen usage in the first game of the series does not bode well for the rest of the weekend. Since Jefry Rodriguez is starting Saturday there was already the chance that the bullpen would see extensive work. Now if Rodriguez struggles, Cleveland will be in an even worse spot,

The Indians offense only scored one run on the day. The run came courtesy of a Tyler Naquin solo shot in the top of the second. This was Naquin’s first of the season. Outside of Naquin’s home run, there was not a lot to write home about. Leonys Martin went 1-2 with two walks. Carlos Santana was 0-1 with three walks. Jose Ramirez was 1-4 with a double. Hanley Ramirez is 1-4.

Cleveland will look to even the series Saturday at 7:15 P.M.

The Cleveland Indians were backed by a strong pitching performance from Shane Bieber en route to a 4-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Cleveland wins the series two games to one.

Cleveland took the final game of the three game series with Detroit and the Indians are back on top in the American League Central. Shane Bieber went six innings and only allowed three hits in the victory. Bieber struck out six batters as he got his first win of the season. 68 of Bieber’s 105 pitches were strikes, 20 were called strikes while 13 were swinging strikes. Bieber threw first pitch strikes to 15 of the 26 batters he faced. The second-year starter was able to get ahead of Tigers batters early and often and used it to his advantage.

Indians first baseman Carlos Santana continues to rake. Santana went 3-3 with two walks and drove in two runs. With his perfect day at the plate Santana is now hitting .425 this season. Santana did get the scoring started in the top of the first with an RBI single, driving home Jake Bauers.

Leonys Martin homered for the second time in the series. This home run came in the third inning and stretched the Indians lead to two. Martin would also single in the top of the fourth to bring home Kevin Plawecki making it 3-0 Indians. Martin would go 3-4 on the day and would finish 5-11 in the series.

The final run of the game came courtesy of another Carlos Santana RBI single. Leonys Martin scored the fourth run of the game and solidified the Indians lead.

Brad Miller would go 2-4 on the day. This increases his batting average to .236. While this is still not great, this is much improved than the .111 average Miller came into the series with.

Indians bats fall quiet in loss to Detroit

The Cleveland Indians offense struggled as they were unable to continue their winning streak in their 4-1 loss to Detroit.

Winning streaks do not last forever. The Cleveland Indians five-game winning streak came to an end Wednesday as they fell to the Tigers by a score of 4-1 in Detroit.

Cleveland only managed to get five hits in the loss compared to Detroit’s 12. Jose Ramirez continues to struggle at the plate as he went 0-4 on the day. Carlos Santana and Hanley Ramirez did rebound as they each got a hit. Hanley Ramirez doubled in Cleveland’s only run of the day in the top of the sixth inning which temporarily brought the Indians within one. Ramirez hit what is probably a single, but was able to stretch it into a double. Leonys Martin would score on the play.

Unfortunately Detroit bounced back from Tuesday’s poor performance. Miguel Cabrera reached on a two out single and that was immediately followed by a two-run home run off the bat of Niko Goodrum. This gave Detroit a 2-0 lead.

After Cleveland cut the lead down to one Detroit answered right back and extended their lead. John Hicks hit a solo home run off of Trevor Bauer to make it 3-1. Josh Harrison would single and bring home Gordon Beckham to score the final run of the game and make the score 4-1.

The glaring issues with Cleveland’s hitting performance is the number of players who went hitless. Jose Ramirez, Jordan Luplow, Tyler Naquin, Jake Bauers, Greg Allen, Max Moroff, Eric Staments and Brad Miller went a combined 0-21. Things will need to change for the series finale Thursday if the Tribe want to come away with a win. Winning a second consecutive series would be quite the feat considering the players currently missing due to injury.

The final game of the series is Thursday at 1:10 P.M.

The Cleveland Indians slugged four home runs and scored eight runs in thier lopsided victory over the Detroit Tigers Tuesday.

Coming into Tuesday’s game in Detroit the Cleveland Indians only had four home runs on the year. During Tuesday’s game the Indians doubled their season total as they went deep four times in the contest. Brad Miller and Jake Bauers got their first home runs as members of the Indians. Leonys Martin and Roberto Perez also hit their first long balls of the season.

The surprising fact about the six-run victory is that Jose Ramirez, Carlos Santana and Hanley Ramirez went a combined 0-11 on the day. Hanley Ramirez was the only one to reach base with a walk in the eighth inning.

Corey Kluber looked fantastic as he bounced back from a rough start against the White Sox last week. Kluber went six innings, allowed one run on seven hits and struck out eight batters. One other run did score while Kluber was on the mound, but that was due to an error by shortstop Eric Stamets. Kluber does look to be back to his former self rather than the lackluster performance against Chicago.

Leonys Martin started the game with a bang, homering off the second pitch of the game. Detroit would answer in the bottom of the inning, Niko Goodrum singled to tie the game at one. The Indians proceeded to score four unanswered runs. Brad Miller hit a two-run homer to make it 3-1 in the second. Roberto Perez would add a solo shot to make it 4-1 in the fifth. Later in the inning Eric Stamets would hit a sacrifice fly which would allow Miller to score, making it 5-1.

Detroit chipped away in the bottom half of the inning with a Miguel Cabrerea RBI double, this would make the score 5-2. Jake Bauers slugged his first home run of the year to get Cleveland’s lead back to four. The final two runs came courtesy of a little league home run. Eric Stamets singled up the middle with Brad Miller on base. Mikie Mahtook misplayed the ball and it rolled all the way to the wall, allowing Stamets to score.

Game 2 will take place Wednesday at 1:10 P.M.

The Cleveland Indians defeated the Toronto Blue Jays Sundy by a score of 3-1, this completes a four game sweep of Toronto.

The Cleveland Indians have improved to 6-3 on the year after sweeping the Toronto Blue Jays in a four game series at home. This is the best start that Cleveland has had under manager Terry Francona.

Mike Clevinger got the start for Cleveland Sunday and was fantastic. Clevinger went five innings, struck out 10 and allowed one hit. Clevinger did have to leave after the fifth inning with upper back tightness. Neil Ramirez came on in the sixth inning and struck out the side on 11 pitches. Ramirez would also start the seventh inning but was relieved by Adam Cimber. Cimber would pitch into the eighth inning and allowed the only run of the game scored by Toronto. Danny Jansen would single, allowing Billy McKinney to score. With runners on first and third, Brad Hand came in to close the game. Hand got a double-play ball to get out of the eighth and got Toronto to go down 1-2-3 in the ninth to end the game.

The Indians offense had a decent day at the plate, collecting six hits and walking once. The key in this game was driving in runs with two outs, something that Cleveland has excelled at so far this season. All three runs today came with two outs in the inning. Carlos Santana would drive home Jake Bauers to get the scoring started. Bauers and Santana had back-to-back doubles with two outs in the first. Tyler Naquin would hit a bloop single to left field which allowed Santana to score. The final run for Cleveland came on an RBI single from Jose Ramirez, Brad Miller would score on the play.

Cleveland will travel to Detroit to take on the Tigers for a three game series Tuesday after an off day Monday.

The Cleveland Indians won their third straight game over the Toronto Blue Jays. Winning by a score of 7-2, Cleveland improves to 5-3 on the year.

The Cleveland Indians have already won their series with the Toronto Blue Jays. Cleveland has taken the first three games of a four game series. Indians starter Carlos Carrasco gets the win, his first of the season.

Carrasco bounced back after a rough outing in Minnesota. Cookie went five innings, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out 12. Carrasco became the first Indians pitcher to strike out 12 in only five innings. Carrasco allowed both runs in the fifth inning. A Freddy Galvis solo home run and a Randal Grichuk RBI double, scoring Teoscar Hernandez.

Cleveland’s bullpen shut things down fairly well. Dan Otero followed Carrasco and allowed two hits in 1.1 innings. Tyler Olson followed Otero and did not allow a hit. Adam Cimber came in after Olson and did not allow a hit in two thirds of an inning. Things got dicey in the ninth with Jon Edwards on the mound. Edwards allowed two hits and Toronto had runners in scoring position, but Edwards was able to work out of it and prevent Toronto from scoring again.

Cleveland’s offense delivers

The Indians offense is starting to come alive as the weather has warmed up. Cleveland tallied 10 hits today and reached base six times via a walk. Carlos Santana got things started with an RBI single in the first inning. Hanley Ramirez would walk with the bases loaded to make it 2-0 Cleveland in the third. In the very next at-bat Jake Bauers delivered with a two out, two RBI single to make it 4-0.

Jordan Luplow would score on a wild pitch in the fifth, making it 5-2. Roberto Perez would reach on a fielder’s choice, but Carlos Santana would score on the play. The final run came courtesy of a throwing error on a stolen base attempt from Jose Ramirez. Ramirez stole third and the ball sailed into the outfield, Ramirez would score as Toronto had no chance of throwing him out.

The Indians look to sweep the Blue Jays in the final game of the series Sunday at 1:10 P.M.

Carlos Santana walks it off for Indians

A walk off home run from Cleveland Indians first baseman Carlos Santana gave the Tribe a 3-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.

With one out in the ninth Carlos Santana came up to the plate and delivered. Santana hit a walk off home run to left center field to give the Indians a 3-2 victory. This was Santana’s fifth-career walk off homer, tying him with Cory Snyder for third all time for the Indians. The home run was Santana’s first of the year.

Carlos Santana was not the only Indians player to hit his first long ball of the year. Kevin Plawecki got the scoring started in the bottom of the third with a solo shot to left field. This gave Cleveland an early 1-0 lead.

The lead would not last for long. After walking Rowdy Tellez, Shane Bieber surrendered a two-run home run to Freddy Galvis, allowing Toronto to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth.

Cleveland would come back to tie things up in the bottom half of the inning courtesy of a Max Moroff RBI double. Hanley Ramirez came all the away around from first to score.

Neither team would score until Santana’s home run in the bottom of the ninth to seal the victory for Cleveland.

Shane Bieber went six innings in his first start of the year, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out nine. Neil Ramirez pitched the seventh, striking out two. Oliver Perez took on the eighth inning and ran into some trouble. Perez allowed a leadoff double to Richard Urena, but managed to get out of the inning unscathed. The top of ninth belonged to Adam Cimber, who finished with two strikeouts.

Cleveland’s offense is still a work in progress as they only managed four hits, two of which were solo home runs. Things will have to change if the Indians want to make a serious run in the postseason.

Trevor Bauer makes history in Indians victory

Advertisements

Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Trevor Bauer made MLB history in Thursday’s 4-1 win over the visiting Toronto Blue Jays.

Trevor Bauer made MLB history in Thursday’s victory over Toronto. No, it was not the Indians first no-hitter since Len Barker’s perfect game in 1981. Trevor Bauer is the first pitcher ever to pitch five or more innings in the first two starts of a season and only allow one hit. Bauer pitched seven innings Thursday and did not allow a hit and struck out eight. Although Bauer did walk six batters and hit another.

Bauer did not want to be taken out of the game, but after a discussion with manager Terry Francona they determined it was the right thing to do. Considering this is only his second start of the year it is hard to justify keeping Bauer in the game with 117 pitches after seven innings. There is no point in overworking someone and risking injury in early April.

Cleveland had a combined no-hitter until the ninth inning when Brad Hand allowed the first Blue Jays hit of the game. Hand allowed Toronto’s only run of the game as well, a RBI double off the bat of Teoscar Hernandez.

The Indians got some help offensively Thursday, scoring four runs on seven hits. Leonys Martin and Tyler Naquin both finished with two hits. This is an encouraging sign after both have struggled mightily to start the season.

Greg Allen grounded into a fielder’s choice in the fourth inning allowing the first run of the game to score. Roberto Perez would follow with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. Jose Ramirez got his first RBI of the year with a sacrifice fly of his own in the seventh inning. The fourth run of the game came across to score after Brad Miller drew a bases loaded walk.

Cleveland looks to take a 2-0 series lead Friday at 7:10 P.M.

Indians defeat White Sox in home opener

Advertisements

The Cleveland Indians were able to defeat the Chicago White Sox by a score of 5-3 in Monday’s home opener.

Cleveland got a strong pitching performance from Mike Clevinger in his first start of the year. “Sunshine’ pitched well in the surprisingly sunny, but chilly home opener. Clevinger went seven innings, allowing one hit and striking out 12. Unfortunately Clevinger was not able to come away with a win as Oliver Perez gave up the lead in the eighth inning.

Perez gave up an RBI double to Yoan Moncada to tie the game. Jon Edwards would surrender a two-run homer to Ryan Cordell who came in as a pinch hitter. The Indians found themselves down 3-1 in the bottom of the eighth and that is when the rally started.

Leonys Martin reached on a walk. Jose Ramirez lined out for the first out of the inning. Jake Bauers would double with Martin going to third. Chicago intentionally walked Carlos Santana to load the bases. Hanley Ramirez would reach on an error, scoring Martin. Max Moroff would single to bring home Bauers. Roberto Perez was walked, this allowed Santana to score. Greg Allen came in as a pinch-hitter for Tyler Naquin and was also walked, Hanley Ramirez would score to make it 5-3 Indians.

Brad Hand came on in the top of the ninth and shut the door for the Indians, securing their first win at home in 2019. Hand struck out two of the three batters he faced.

Cleveland’s bats appeared to finally wake up after a rather unimpressive start to the year. Cleveland finished with eight hits and reached base via walk five times and managed to double their season run total in one game.

The second and final game of the series will take place Wednesday at 1:10 P.M.

Indians fall to Twins in series finale

Advertisements

The Cleveland Indians lost the third and finale game of the three game series with the Twins in Minnesota, losing by a score of 9-3

Carlos Carrasco did not have a good start Sunday. Allowing six runs on 10 hits in just 4.1 innings. This was not what the Indians needed from Carrasco considering their offensive struggles to start the year. Speaking of offensive struggles, Cleveland only managed six hits on the day. This is not the recipe for success. Things need to change and fast.

Carlos Carrasco just appeared off in his first start of the year. Pitches were catching too much of the plate and the Twins hitters made him pay. Willians Astudillo got Minnesota started with an RBI double in the second inning. Byron Buxton would add two more runs in the fourth with a double. Nelson Cruz took Carrasco deep in the fifth with a two-run shot.

Neil Ramirez came in for Carrasco and allowed an RBI single from Jonathan Schoop. Astudillo would hit a sacrifice fly which brought C.J. Cron home. Schoop would score on the play due to a throwing error from Carlos Santana. Schoop would have been out at third but Santana’s throw to third was high and Schoop would end up scoring on the play.

Shane Bieber would allow the final run scored by Minnesota Sunday. Jake Cave brought home Willians Astudillo with an RBI single in the eighth inning bringing Minnesota’s run total to nine.

Carlos Santana had himself a day, going 4-4 with a three-run double in the top of the eighth. Santana was the only Indians batter to have a successful day at the plate. While Jose Ramirez did get his first hit of the year, his batting average is currently at .091. Things will turn around for Ramirez sooner rather than later. Jake Bauers also got a hit, finishing 1-4 on the day.

Cleveland will take on the White Sox at home in a two game series where the Indians will look to get back in the win column.
