Browns to interview Brian Daboll

The Cleveland Browns are interiviewing Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll Monday as their coaching search continues.

The Cleveland Browns are interviewing Brian Daboll for their vacant head coaching position Monday.

It was originally scheduled for Sunday. This changed to Monday after Buffalo’s elimination from the playoffs.

Brian Daboll has spent time with two of the best coaches in all of football. Bill Belichick and Nick Saban. There is no doubt that Daboll has learned a lot from Belichick and Saban, but his actual performance as a coordinator is underwhelming. During his time in Cleveland under Eric Mangini, the Browns offense was ranked 32nd and 29th in two seasons. Granted, those teams were far from good, but this did happen. Brian Daboll spent the past year in Buffalo as the offensive coordinator for the Bills and Josh Allen. Daboll did have some creative concepts for Allen, but overall the performance was uninspiring and inconsistent on both ends The offense for Allen is not the same as it would be for Baker Mayfield.

Like Josh McDaniels, Daboll did return to New England, that does matter. Only difference is that Daboll returned to a different position than what he held before. McDaniels returned to his previous position.

Cleveland’s coaching search is running out of time. Two candidates have taken positions with other teams (Ron Rivera with Washington and Mike McCarthy with Dallas). The Browns have interviewed a wide variety of candidates with varying levels of experience. Daboll has plenty of experience in the NFL, but with mixed results.

The Browns love Josh McDaniels and is the favorite for the job. The interview with Daboll may have been initially set up with the expectation that McDaniels may not be ready to interview. With the Patriots early exit, that could change things. This interview may be more of a courtesy than a legitimate interview.
