Odell Beckham Jr. undergoes core surgery

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has successfully undergone core muscle surgery to repair an injury that was an issue all season.

The Cleveland Browns have announced that wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has successfully undergone surgery to repair a core issue that plagued him all year long. Beckham is expected to be ready for next season.

Odell Beckham Jr. dealt with the issue all season and it was quite apparent. Beckham did not appear to be his normal explosive self at times. The routine highlight plays were just not there. It is pretty safe to assume that what everyone saw from Beckham is not up to his standards and the standards of elite NFL wide receivers.

High expectations followed Beckham to Cleveland. While Beckham’s year would have been good for some receivers, it was not for Beckham. Even with the injury, Beckham caught 74 passes for 1,035 yards and four touchdowns. All of these numbers are career lows for seasons in which Beckham appeared in 12 or more games.

The combination of Odell Beckham Jr. and former LSU teammate Jarvis Landry led to high expectations in Cleveland. Having Baker Mayfield throw to Beckham and Landry should have led to more success on the field. Instead it was a complete disaster. A combination of bad coaching, a tough schedule, and Beckham’s injury did not yield the results that many expected.

What’s next?

With the recent developments off the field and the new regime in the Browns front office, things could change. While Kevin Stefanski would love to have a talent like Odell Beckham Jr. on his team, Paul DePodesta and their next general manager may want to look at other options. Options that align with their vision. Trading a receiver like Beckham will not go over well with the Haslams, the fans, and some of his Browns teammates. That part of the equation must be considered if Cleveland is truly thinking about moving on from Odell Beckham Jr.
