Utah Jazz make Collin Sexton available in trade talks

It does not appear that Collin Sexton will extend his stay in Utah. The Jazz are making the former Cavaliers guard available in trade talks according to reports.

Collin Sexton landed in Utah as part of the trade that sent Donovan Mitchell to the Cavs last offseason. Acquiring Mitchell was a massive upgrade that also allowed them to get out from any contract talks with Sexton. That four-year $70 million agreement ended up in the hands of Utah who is now looking to move on from that deal.

Properly evaluating what Collin Sexton is not necessarily an easy task. Sexton was able to put up some good numbers on bad Cavs teams that were all-in on playing the kids. Sexton’s third season saw him score a career-high 24.3 points per game on a then career-high 47.5% from the field. In 2021 Sexton was limited to just 11 games due to injury, but his scoring numbers and overall effectiveness plummeted before playing his final games as a Cavalier (16 PPG, .450 FG%, .244 3P%, .487 eFG%).

Collin Sexton is clearly entering a redemption season in 2023-24. The past two years have not gone well for Sexton and as a result his stock is at an all-time low. If Sexton is truly going to redeem himself, he would be best suited as a sixth man off the bench on a good team. This would allow him to demonstrate his own value while being part of a successful team. If he ends up on a bad team, it could be very similar to his first few seasons with Cavs. Putting up empty numbers on a team that is nowhere close to being competitive.

New Utah Jazz uniforms are terrible

In an apparent bid to have the worst uniforms in the NBA next season, the Utah Jazz have released their new look. The source material for this design must have been police barricade tape because these are dreadful. The only saving grace in the set is the purple throwback inspired look. The nostalgia of those teams that went to The Finals is the only passable look.

There is a fine line between clean, simplistic, and minimalistic uniform design and no effort. This is the latter. An incredibly boring design featuring the most basic lettering and numbering is a complete miss.

Additionally the Jazz have a City Edition and Classic jersey for the 2023-24 season. The City Edition is inspired by the aforementioned throwback uniforms and is designed wonderfully. Utah’s Classic harkens back to their days in New Orleans and is clear success.

It is frustrating to see the Jazz be successful in some areas of their uniform design while other uniforms appear to have phoned in their effort. One thing is near certain, their next uniforms will be better than this because somehow being worse is (almost) impossible.

Cavaliers silence Jazz in 111-91 win

The Cleveland Cavaliers traveled to Utah and took down the shorthanded Jazz with a dominant 111-91 win.

Wednesday’s win over the Utah Jazz can be described with one word, dominance. The Cleveland Cavaliers made a visit to Utah and took advantage of a Jazz team that did not have a single big man of relevance. Utah was forced to go small against a Cavs team that resulted in the basketball version of Dwight and Angela agreeing that “Jazz is stupid”. While not their first choice, Utah’s roster construction was no match for the vaunted Tower City lineup.

Leading the Cavaliers in scoring was Lamar Stevens. Stevens scored what appeared to be an easy 23 points on 10-15 from the field while also accumulating seven rebounds, two steals, and one assist. When perusing the lineup of players that could have led the Cavs in scoring, Stevens would most likely be one of the last names picked if not the last.

Stevens was not alone as Darius Garland registered just the second non-LeBron James triple-double since 2003. Garland’s 11 points, 15 assists (career-high), and 10 rebounds joins Kyrie Irving’s performance which was also in a 20-point win over the Jazz. Luckily for Garland his shooting prowess was not needed as his teammates were able to pick up his 3-11 (1-8 3PT) shooting night.

The Cavaliers are currently 3-1 on their west coast road trip with just two games left to play. Visits to San Antonio and Oklahoma City are still on the docket before returning home to take on Brooklyn January 17th.

Cavaliers keep it close, lose to Jazz

The Cleveland Cavaliers were able to be competitive and even had a chance to win, but ultimately lost to Utah 109-108.

With 17.9 seconds to play the Cleveland Cavaliers had possession and had the opportunity to set up a game-winning shot. Darius Garland missed a three-pointer with just 2.9 left on the clock and an attempted tip from Evan Mobley also did not go in. While the Cavaliers did not win the game, being competitive against a team like the Utah Jazz is impressive. Cleveland was able to battle with Utah for the entire contest, even closing a 15-point deficit in the 4th to give them a chance to win.

Even though his game-winner did not go in, Garland had another outstanding performance. Garland finished with 31 points on an 11-19 shooting night, making five three-pointers and four free throws. In addition the scoring production, Garland also had five assists, four steals, and one block.

Like their last game, Jarrett Allen was impressive yet again. Allen collected his seventh straight double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. The combination of Garland and Allen have proven to be a formidable duo that teams must account for when getting ready to play the Cavs.

Cleveland has shown that they are not an easy win on the schedule for their opponents. Wins may be hard to come by as the season progresses, but right now they are the best team in town and that is something that fans of the other teams need to lean on.

With the loss the Cavaliers are 13-11 and currently sit in seventh place in the Eastern Conference. Cleveland will look to rebound Monday night when they travel to Milwaukee to take on the 15-9 Bucks.

Cavaliers take on Jazz in Utah

The Cleveland Cavaliers travel to Utah to take on the Jazz as they are trying to get back into the win column after two consecutive losses.

Coming off two straight losses, the Cleveland Cavaliers are not trending in the right direction. A 14-point loss to the shorthanded Lakers and the heartbreaking loss on a buzzer beater to Sacramento has the Cavs at 17-29 on the season. Now Cleveland will take on the 34-11 Utah Jazz in attempt to get an elusive win.

Utah currently has the best record in the league and sit atop the Western Conference. The Jazz are averaging 117 points per game while limiting their opponents to 108.2. Cleveland is on the other end of that spectrum as they score 103.5 per game and give up 111. This could be a long night for the Cavaliers as Utah should be able to score fairly easily from start to finish.

Donovan Mitchell is Utah’s leading scorer as he averages 25.9 per game. Mitchell is also their assist leader with 5.5 per game and is fourth in rebounds with 4.6. The leading rebounder for the Jazz is Rudy Gobert with 13.3 per contest with his 14.6 PPG is fifth on the team. It is not just the starters who make an impact for the Jazz as a familiar face comes off the bench, Jordan Clarkson. Clarkson is the Jazz’ second-highest scorer with 17.4 per game in 25.7 minutes off the bench.

The Cavaliers will have their hands full from the tip Monday night. The talent gap between Utah and Cleveland is huge and there is a very good chance that could be reflected in the final score.

Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 P.M. in Utah
