Trent Williams trade saga over for Browns

The Cleveland Browns are no longer pursuing a trade for Washington Redskins left tackle Trent Williams after drafting Jedrick Wills Jr. 10th overall.

Once the Cleveland Browns turned in the card for Jedrick Wills Jr., there was no longer a need to trade for Washington Redskins tackle Trent Williams. Josina Anderson reported that their pursuit ended once they drafted the Alabama tackle 10th overall.

This was as expected. By taking a tackle at 10, there was no longer a need to trade for Trent Williams. Cleveland has their left tackle situation taken care of and does not need to explore other options.

If the Browns would have selected a different position or traded down it would be a different story. A developmental tackle playing behind Williams would make sense, allowing that particular player to learn from one of the best tackles in the past few years.

This entire saga came to an end due to Washington overvaluing Williams. The Redskins were trying to trade their disgruntled tackle to the highest bidder in a non-existent bidding war. Cleveland was really the only team that was seriously rumored to acquire the seven-time Pro Bowler.

Perhaps if Washington lowered their demand into a more realistic return things may have been different. Due to their inability to realize they have zero leverage in this situation they still have a player who has stated will never play for them again. The Browns now have a player who projects to be very good and will cost them a hell of a lot less.

Browns should avoid Trent Williams

Washington Redskins left tackle Trent Williams is reportedly seeking a large contract after being traded and the Cleveland Browns should look elsewhere.

According to reports, Trent Williams wants a large contract after being traded. A contract somewhere in the $20 million per season range.

This is absolutely absurd. The Cleveland Browns should not engage Washington about a trade for Williams or even entertain the thought of paying him that much money.

This would make Trent Willams the highest paid player on the team. There is no reason to paying a soon to be 32-year old left tackle more than anyone else on the team. This is not even mentioning what the Redskins are seeking for Willams in trade. Some have mentioned that they want a high draft pick in return before having to renegotiate his contract. Essentially the team that acquires him has to pay a premium in order to pay him more. The Browns would be foolish to even consider this option.

Luckily a trade and contract of this type does not necessarily fit the philosophy of the current front office. Cleveland seems like they could consider drafting a tackle such as Mekhi Becton or Andrew Thomas. Combine one of those options with some moves in free agency and the team could be in business. Of course they actually have to spend some money on free agents that work with their process. Young lineman that actually make sense to sign to a contract that may be a bit more costly than others. Essentially not Trent Willams.

Browns offensive line options and rumors

The Cleveland Browns will reportedly explore left tackle options in Washington’s Trent Williams and free agent Jason Peters.

As soon as the news popped up connections to the Cleveland Browns were made. Rumors and reports surfaced that Cleveland will look into the options of Jason Peters and Trent Williams per Mary Kay Cabot.

The Washington Redskins have given Trent Williams permission to work out a trade. Williams was someone who could have been of interest to Cleveland last season as it was quite clear that he would not play for the Redskins again. With limited options available and a clear need, Cleveland could have added him at that time if a trade could have been facilitated. Now that plenty of options exist, Williams should not be a priority. Washington will be looking for a good draft pick and Williams will want a new, expensive deal. This should cross him off the Browns list of targets almost immediately.

Jason Peters is now a free agent after spending the past 11 years in Philadelphia. Now 38, Peters will draw interest from teams looking for a short term option. Cleveland should look in the other direction here. Peters will require an expensive contract and with his advanced age could experience a drop-off in performance sooner rather than later. There are options available in the draft for Cleveland to consider that will be both younger and less expensive. Peters is not going to come take a “team friendly” deal to come to Cleveland. Consider most other options before tricking yourself into believing this fallacy.

Browns stand pat at trade deadline

The Cleveland Browns decided to stand pat at the trade deadline. John Dorsey resisted the temptation to overpay to make a move that would have a minimal impact.

Cleveland was rumored to be in on Trent Williams for some time. There even was a time when it was expected that Williams would end up in a Browns uniform. Well, Bruce Allen does not know what the hell he is doing. Washington is now stuck paying someone who has zero intention on playing for the Redskins.

The trade demands from Washington were absolutely outrageous. Denzel Ward plus picks?! If that was their demand to every team no wonder nothing happened.

There is no way John Dorsey would part ways with Denzel Ward and picks for Trent Williams.

The fact that it was reported that teams wouldn’t engage Washington on trade talks now is poetic justice. Washington refused discussions about Williams all summer.

After burning all their bridges earlier they had nobody willing to enter trade talks with them at a moment when they had all the leverage. If there is anything that exemplifies the current state of the Washington Redskins it is this.

The value and demand for Trent Williams will only depreciate from this moment on. Since Williams reported his contract will now toll. Williams can be an unrestricted free agent after 2020. If Williams did not report he would have to wait until 2021. If the Redskins were to get substantial value for Williams, that time has now passed. Now they will get 50 cents on the dollar for him if they are lucky. An aging left tackle with an injury history isn’t exactly all that enticing. Williams is not Joe Thomas after all. Very few left tackles are able to get the haul that Washington was seeking.

Trent Williams would not have fixed other more important issues

Now onto the issues with the Browns. They have problems with discipline and execution. There is also a notable absence of a winning culture. It is not about Cleveland having a losing culture. It’s just the absence of a culture of winning. Overpaying for someone like Trent Williams may have been a bandage and not much else. Williams would help one problem the Browns have, but it would not cure all.

John Dorsey clearly told the coaching staff that he believes that they have enough talent to win now and he is right. It is possible to scheme around their issues on the offensive line. The coaching staff will just have to an install a game plan that works around their issues. Most notably a game plan that does not rely on big chunks of yards at a time. The presence of Todd Monken may make that difficult. However, there is a way it can be worked around.

Browns should look for left tackle help elsewhere

The Washington Redskins are not looking to move left tackle Trent Williams during the season forcing the Cleveland Browns to look elsewhere.

Apparently the Washington Redskins are not all that interested in trading Trent Williams to the Cleveland Browns. Well, at least during the season that is. It is time for John Dorsey to move on and no longer contact the Redskins about Williams.

According to reports, Washington is going to wait until after the season to evaluate their trade offers. Essentially killing any leverage they have in trade discussions. The only option during the season to acquire someone of value is through trade and Washington is basically saying Nah, we’re good. We don’t want teams in a mid-season bidding war. We want to wait to see where their draft picks are in relation to the draft.

This is stupid thinking. This is the thinking that has had the Redskins stuck in neutral for quite some time.

Everyone knows that the Cleveland Browns have massive issues on the offensive line. They need an upgrade in the worst way. Greg Robinson has been awful and he may have already been benched. It is easy to imagine Dorsey giving up quite a lot to acquire a better left tackle. On the Washington side of things it is not like Trent Williams will be suiting up to play for them any time soon. Williams does not trust the Redskins and refuses to play for them ever again.

Washington has an aging asset with an injury history just sitting there not providing any sort of benefit to their franchise and they refuse to trade him when his value could not be higher. If Washington does not want to engage Cleveland in trade discussions until after the season it is best for John Dorsey to tell them to hit the bricks and find a solution elsewhere.

John Dorsey comments on potential trade

John Dorsey turned some heads Wednesday with his comments in regards to a potential Trent Williams deal.

“It takes two to tango”. This is what John Dorsey said after being asked about the Trent Williams rumors. Cleveland has been rumored to be the landing spot for Washington’s left tackle since Tuesday evening and this comment will only fuel the rumors.

John Dorsey did confirm that the Browns have talked with the Redskins about Trent Williams. Dorsey also spoke about the state of the Browns offensive line and his desire for more consistency.

The struggles of Greg Robinson, Eric Kush and Chris Hubbard have been quite notable. This trio of lineman have not lived up to expectations and have made things difficult for the Browns offense this season. Opposing defenses have been attacking these three quite consistently because they know that going through Joel Bitonio and JC Tretter is a difficult task.

If things are going to turn around for the Browns offense it starts up front. John Dorsey wants a solution. The fans want a solution. Pretty safe to assume that Baker Mayfield wants a solution too. Dorsey and Freddie Kitchens will have the bye week to figure one out. Along with some other areas in need of attention.

Perhaps the Browns can find some options internally. Even though one of those options is now on the Rams. The Browns can look at the likes of Wyatt Teller, Kendall Lamm and Justin McCray. It is possible that one or all of these three are the answer they are looking for. That is of course if the Browns are unable to find their dance partner in the Washington Redskins and acquire an All-Pro talent in Trent Williams.

Trent Williams linked to Browns

Trade rumors are flying and the Cleveland Browns are linked to a move that would improve their offensive line. Washington’s Trent Williams.

The Cleveland Browns know they have an issue on their offensive line. That did not stop them from sending Austin Corbett to the Rams. With that move they have an open roster spot. A spot that could be taken by Washington Redskins left tackle Trent Williams.

Twitter went into a frenzy yesterday after a report that the Browns were close to acquiring Williams.

For those unfamiliar with Steve Doerschuk, he is the one who broke the Odell Beckham Jr. trade first. Steve is a reliable source.

Of course this report does not mean that the deal is official. The use of the word “should” implies that. It just means that from what he has heard a deal should occur soon.

Trent Williams would boost the Browns offensive line

If the Browns do indeed acquire Trent Williams he will help the offensive line out tremendously. Williams is a clear upgrade over Greg Robinson. Robinson played surprisingly well last season but has been rather disappointing this season.

With how often the Browns want to push the ball downfield they cannot have lackluster offensive line play. Williams could at least bring it back up to an acceptable level. A level that would give Baker Mayfield more than enough time to feel comfortable in the pocket and properly read the defense. (This is in contrast to the overall time to throw which is being championed and is a flawed statistic).

Yes, there is concern with Williams. Williams is currently holding out from the Washington Redskins for a variety of reasons. Contractural issues and mistrust of the organization certainly headline the laundry list of reasons for Williams.

The timing for the Browns in regards to this trade rumor could not be better. The team is currently on their bye week. If a team is going to acquire a player who is holding out, this is best time to do so during the season. This is the most amount of time a player and team will have to get a player up to speed with the season already underway.

The only question is how much the Browns will have to give up. Cleveland does not want to give up a second consecutive first round pick. This may or may not be a deal breaker for Washington.

Washington has refuted the report but it is worth noting that Redskins general manager Bruce Allen is a bit of a wild card. Nobody knows what he is going to do at any given time. This includes Bruce Allen.

Will the Browns acquire Trent Williams? Only time will tell.
