Monsters come away with 3-2 OT win in Texas

After losing their first two matchups in Texas, the Cleveland Monsters came away with a 3-2 overtime victory over the Stars.

The Cleveland Monsters were on the verge of being swept by the Texas Stars, but managed to salvage the final game of their three game series on Sunday. Like the previous two games in Texas, Cleveland had the advantage in the shots on goal department (37-32), luckily this time it resulted in a win.

The bulk of the action came in the 2nd period as both teams were scoreless in the 1st. Texas scored first 8:23 into the period, but the Monsters managed to answer back less than a minute later. Josh Dunne netted his 4th goal of the season to tie things up at 1 midway through the period. Assisting on the goal was Jake Christiansen (12) and Tyler Angle (9).

A little over five minutes later Cleveland took a 2-1 lead. It was the second goal of the season for Matthew Struthers. Thomas Schemitsch (13) and Nick Lappin (1) were credited with assists on the goal. The Monsters lead unfortunately did not last through the period as Texas tied things up with less than 20 seconds left in the 2nd.

Like the 1st period, the 3rd period did not result in any goals. This brings things to overtime. 3:20 seconds into the extra period Adam Helewka scored the game winner for the Monsters as they avoided the sweep. Carson Meyer and (10) and Dillon Simpson (8) assisted on the Helewka’s third goal of the season.

Starting in goal for the Monsters was Justin Kapelmaster, making his Cleveland debut. Kapelmaster saved 30 of 32 shots on goal, only one of the goals coming in a full strength situation.

With the win, Cleveland has 30 points and remain in second place in the AHL Central Division. The Monsters have a 14-8-1-1 record in 24 games this season.

Monsters drop second straight to Stars

Cleveland dropped their second consecutive game to Texas Saturday.

After losing the first of three games Thursday, the Cleveland Monsters were unable to get back into the win column as they lost 5-2 Saturday evening. Even with the loss, Cleveland is still in second place in the AHL Central Division with 28 points and a 13-8-1-1 record on the year.

What sticks out is the large differential in shots on goal. The Monsters outshot Texas 34-23, including 16 in the 1st period. One those shots ended up as a goal of the power play variety. It was Carson Meyer scoring his 8th on the year with assists from Thomas Schemitsh (11) and Jake Christiansen (11). This goal tied the game at 1 after Texas took an early 1-0 lead.

Texas dominated the 2nd period, regaining and extending their lead after scoring two goals through the first 16 minutes. Cleveland was not ready to roll over as 26 seconds after Texas’ second goal it was the Josh Dunne pulling the Monsters back within one. It was the second assist of the game for Schemitsch and Cliff Pu’s fifth of the year.

Unfortunately for Cleveland they were not able to score again in the contest. The Stars added two more goals in the 3rd period and the Monsters would go on to lose 5-2.

Brad Thiessen started in goal for Cleveland and this was the most goals allowed in over a month for the Monsters goalie. Thiessen has not seen a lot of action, but his performance was a bit better than earlier in the year. In his last three starts, Thiessen has allowed four total goals with two wins coming along the way.

The Monsters face the Stars for the final time this season Sunday at 6:00 P.M.

Monsters lose to Stars in shootout 2-1

The Cleveland Monsters found themselves on the wrong side of a 2-1 shootout loss to the Texas Stars.

At some point the goal scoring frequency for the Cleveland Monsters was going to see a correction. That correction occurred Thursday night as they only managed one goal in a 2-1 shootout loss in Texas to the Stars. The loss comes after winning their previous two games at home against the Chicago Wolves.

The only goal of the game for the Monsters came late in the 3rd period. Cliff Pu tied the game at 1 wit his first goal of the year. Tyler Angle (8) and Wyatt Newpower (6) were credited with assists on the goal.

Brad Thiessen started the game in goal and saved 25 of 26 shots on goal, not counting the shootout goal. This was the second straight game and third overall that Thiessen allowed 1 goal on the year.

Cleveland dominated in the shots on goal department (40-27), but were unable to convert those shots into goals. The Monsters held a slight advantage in power play opportunities, going 0-5 compared to Texas’ 0-4 effort. Given their ample opportunities to score it is a bit disappointing to see the Monsters unable to put more than one goal on the board.

Monsters defeat Stars 5-2 in final game of home stand

The Cleveland Monsters bounced back from Saturday’s disappointing loss to defeat the Texas Stars by a score of 5-2. This was the third game in four days between both teams. Monsters coach Mike Eaves said that “This was a three game weekend, a mini-series if you will” and by the end of this one neither team really seemed to like each other all that much as things got quite chippy throughout.

1st Period

After fighting through some sloppy play and what appeared to be an overall lack of urgency, the Mosnters got on the board 2:38 into the period thanks to Tyler Sikura. This was Sikura’s third goal of the season and was assisted by Gavin Bayreuther (5) and Adam Helewka (1). Sikura was right in the crease and managed to score after the puck hung around the goal a little longer than it should have.

Just a few moments later Nathan Gerbe doubled the Monsters lead with his third goal of the season. Gerbe was able to fire the puck right past Tomas Sholl from a pretty good distance away from the goal. Bayreuther registered his second assist of the game while Sikura helped out a fellow Monster this time around with his fifth assist of the season.

With 11:08 played in the period Evan Polei gave the Monsters a 3-0 lead. Polei flipped the puck into the net with an impressive backhand for his second goal of the season. Bayreuther managed yet another 1st period assist, his third with Andrew Peeke also assisting on the play.

Polei commented on the goal following the game, “Not sure what the goalie was doing but I’ll take it”.

The Monsters dominated in the shots on goal department as they finished with 14 attempts on goal while Texas had only 6. This difference certainly played a factor in the early 3-0 lead for Cleveland.

2nd Period

The Stars were not ready to roll over as 3:47 into the period Texas managed to get a goal back as Nick Baptiste fired the puck past Thiessen on a rebound to cut into the Monsters lead.

With 13:35 left in the period there was a little brawl involving Derek Barach, Justin Scott, and Anthony Louis who were all called for roughing.

Texas’ Adam Mascherin scored with a little over 11 minutes to play in the period to cut the Monsters lead in half from 2 to 1. The once comfortable 3-0 lead for the Monsters became an uncomfortable 1 goal differential.

Due to an Adam Clendening interference penalty the Monsters were on the penalty kill late in the period with Texas having all the momentum. Thiessen was able to survive Texas’ assault on goal as he kept the Stars from tying the game. A couple of well-timed clearances from Cleveland played a major role in their successful penalty kill.

A late slashing penalty gave Cleveland a brief power play at the end of the period. This was a huge break for Cleveland as momentum was clearly on the side of Texas and it did not look like that was going to change unless a penalty was called.

The Monsters advantage in the shot department remained, but the gap closed as Texas 13 shots on goal compared to Cleveland’s 12.

With Texas seemingly crawling back in the period things were starting to look like Saturday night’s 4-3 loss. Mike Eaves said after the game that “2nd periods like that are going to happen” and “they’re inevitable, it’s about how you solve the riddle”.

3rd Period

Cleveland carried over their one man advantage into the 3rd period and were not able to manage a quality shot on goal during that span. A great opportunity for the Monsters to get some meaningful shot attempts went by the wayside.

With a 7:46 gone in the 3rd Polei scored his 2nd goal of the game and 3rd of the season to give the Monsters a two goal lead. Carson Meyer (5) and Thomas Schemitisch (3) assisted Polei on the goal. This goal could not have come at more crucial time for Cleveland as Texas was clearly in the driver’s seat momentum wise.

With 2:59 left to play Sikura added his 2nd goal of the game while Bayreuther got his 4th assist of the game. Sikrua’s goa was of the empty net variety and came from Cleveland’s defensive zone as Texas pulled their goalie in an attempt to cut into Cleveland’s lead.

The Monsters held a 10-7 lead in shots on goal during the final period of play.

Game notes

Monsters forward Tyler Sikura scored his 100th AHL point in the win.

When asked about the difference in Sunday’s win versus Saturday’s loss coach Mike Eaves stated the the team was “conscious of our play at both blue lines” and “took good care of the puck”. Considering that Cleveland held on to the lead this team this proved to be true. Eaves would later add, “A lot more better things tonight which allowed us to pass the test”.

Monsters face Stars for third time in four days

The Cleveland Monsters take on the Texas Stars in their final game of a three game series after trading wins and losses in the previous games.

It was a 3-1 win for the Cleveland Monsters on Thursday as they kicked off their series with the Texas Stars with a victory. Texas got some revenge on Saturday as they managed to come back from a three goal deficit to hand Cleveland a 4-3 loss. Now both teams will face off for the third time in four days as the Monsters close out their home stand.

The perfect way to describe the Monsters performance over the last two games is like a pendulum swing. There are moments that they look like the better team on the ice and then everything flips with Texas looking like the superior squad. That was exactly the case of the span of two games as Cleveland once held 6-1 goal advantage over the span of 4 periods. Texas closed that gap Saturday night with their four goal performance, making it a one goal differential at 6-5. If the pendulum swings back in Cleveland’s favor it could result in a much needed win for the Monsters.

Heading into Sunday’s game the Monsters are in 4th place in the AHL Central division with 11 points and a 5-5-1 record. Meanwhile Texas is 3rd with 20 points and a 9-5-2 record. While Cleveland is in 4th place they have the fewest points in the division. Rockford has 13 points and Iowa has 12, but both have played more games than the Monsters, 17 and 16 respectively.

Puck drop is scheduled for 4:00 P.M.

Monsters squander 3 goal lead vs. Stars

The Cleveland Monsters held a three goal lead against the Texas Stars early in the 2nd period, but allowed 4 straight goals in a 4-3 loss.

3:28 into the 2nd period things were looking up for the Cleveland Monsters, holding what seemed to be a comfortable three goal lead against Texas. The Stars did not just roll over and give up as they scored four consecutive goals to hand the Monsters a 4-3 loss. This was simply a case of a team not being able to finish a game. These type of losses hurt, but are hardly surprising for this version of the team.

Kole Sherwood and Liam Foudy both scored their first goals of the season. Sherwood’s was the Monsters first goal of the game while Foudy’s was their third and final goal. Cleveland’s second goal came courtesy of Carson Meyer, his second on the campaign.

As far as assists go, they came from Ole Bjorgvhik-Holm (1) and Thomas Schemitsch (2) on Sherwood’s goal. Justin Scott registered his fourth assists and Evan Polei his third on Meyer’s goal. Tyler Angle got the lone assist on Foudy’s goal.

Brad Thiessen got the start in net for the Monsters and the level of variance in his play was on his display. Last weekend Thiessen allowed 5 goals against the Griffins only to follow that up with 1 goal allowed Thursday. The pendulum swung back in the other direction Saturday as he allowed 4 goals on 23 shots.

The Monsters have a chance to win two of three against the Stars Sunday at 4 P.M.

Monsters looking for second straight win over Stars

The Cleveland Monsters are looking to win their second consecutive games against the Texas Stars in their second of three games.

Thursday night provided a great start for the Cleveland Monsters who are hosting the Texas Stars for three games in four days. The Monsters came away with a 3-1 win and sent the Cleveland crowd home happy. Now Cleveland will look to continue the winning ways against Texas Saturday night.

Two goals from Tyler Angle and a goal from Adam Clendening led the Monsters last time out while goaltender Brad Thiessen had a nice bounce back performance in net. Cleveland will be looking for a repeat performance as Texas did not perform up to their season scoring average. The Stars averages 3.6 goals per game, which would have been enough to defeat the Monsters Thursday is partial goals were a thing. Texas’ defense performed as expected as they allow 3.3 goals per game, just a bit more than Cleveland’s 3 scored on Thursday.

The point, goal, and assist leaders for the Stars remain unchanged from the other day. Adam Mascherin and Riley Daminai lead in points with 17 each. Mascherin leads in goals with 8 with Damiani leading in assists with 11.

The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 P.M.

Monsters defeat Stars at home 3-1

The Cleveland Monsters rebounded nicely from their previous loss as they defeated the visiting Texas Stars 3-1 at home.

It was not a good result last time out for the Cleveland Monsters as they found themselves on the wrong side of a 5-2 final score. Things went much better for Cleveland this time out as they came away with a 3-1 in their first of three matchups with the Texas Stars.

It was a scoreless 1st period for the two teams as neither was able to find the back of the net. The Monsters had 14 shots on goal and two power play opportunities, but were unable to convert. Cleveland would go on to finish 0-5 on the power play in the contest.

The 2nd period saw the Monsters draw first blood as Adam Clendending scored his first gaol of the season. Clendening was assisted by Carson Meyer and Justin Scott, their 4th and 3rd assists respectively.

Texas was able to tie the game midway through the 3rd period as Nick Baptiste scored a power play goal to get the Stars on the board.

Luckily for Cleveland they were able to recover nicely later in the period. With the Monsters shorthanded due to a Brandon Fortunato holding penalty, Tyler Angle scored a shorthanded goal to give Cleveland a 2-1 lead. It was the 3rd goal in just four games for Angle. Liam Foudy (2) and Jake Christiansen (2) assisted on the short handed goal.

Angle was not done as he scored an empty netter with less than 30 seconds left to play. The 20-year old forward now has 4 goals in 4 games for Cleveland. Assisting on the goal was Foudy for his second of the game (3) and Gavin Bayreuther (4).

Brat Thiessen got the start in net for the Monsters and things were much better this time around. Thiessen only allowed 1 goal on 32 shots from Texas, an improvement upon his last outing which saw Thiessen allow 5 goals against Grand Rapids.

The Monsters have a night off before facing the Stars again on Saturday and Sunday.

Monsters take on Texas Stars at home

The Cleveland Monsters begin a three game in four day series at home as they host the Texas Stars.

Last time out it was not pretty for the Cleveland Monsters as they were on the wrong side of 5-2 final score against the Grand Rapids Griffins. Cleveland is looking to put that behind them as they take on the Texas Stars three times in the next four days. The Monsters will travel to Texas in April to play the second half of the three games in four days series between both teams.

Texas comes in as the third place team in the AHL Central, one place above the Monsters. The Stars have 18 points on the season with a 8-4-2 record in 14 games. For comparison Cleveland has 9 points with a 4-4-1 record.

Two players top the points list for Texas this season, Adam Mascherin and Riley Damiaini with 17 points each. Mascherin is first in goals with 8 while Damiaini is tied for second with Anthony Louis with 6. Damiaini leads in assists with 11 and Mascherin checks in at second with 9. When it comes to stopping the Stars in the offensive zone, it is about limiting these two payers as much as possible.

Texas has relatively split the goaltending duties this season as Tomas Sholl has 7 appearances and Colton Point has 6. Sholl has the edge in GAA with 2.80, save percentage 0.907. and record 4-1-1. Meanwhile Point has a 3.48 GAA, 0.891 save percentage, and 3-2-1 record. Even when there is a bit of drop off in net the Stars still find a way to win.

The game between the Monsters and Stars is expected to start at 7:00 P.M.
