Three Monsters reassigned to taxi squad

Three members of the Cleveland Monsters are up to the taxi squad for the Columbus Blue Jackets.

It’s another day with a flurry of moves for the Columbus Blue Jackets and Cleveland Monsters. Columbus has brought Nathan Gerbe, Josh Dunne, and Adam Clendening to the taxi squad. The Blue Jackets also called up Ryan MacInnis, Kole Sherwood, and Andrew Peeke from the taxi squad.

With the trade deadline on Monday at 3 P.M., these moves seem to indicate that the Blue Jackets have something in the works with some of their players. Whatever moves Columbus makes will impact the Monsters in some way, shape, or form.

Blue Jackets recall two Monsters players

The Columbus Blue Jackets have recalled two forwards from the Cleveland Monsters.

After the Cleveland Monsters and their matchup with the Rockford IceHogs postponed, the Columbus Blue Jackets have recalled two players previously assigned to the club. Ryan MacInnis and Zac Dalpe will return to the Blue Jackets the team has announced.

Cleveland would have benefited from an offensive boost with MacInnis and Dalpe in the lineup, but the game was postponed due to COVID-19 protocols. The Monsters take the ice again on Friday March 5th while the Blue Jackets take on the Detroit Red Wings March 2.

Monsters drop weekend set vs Senators

The Cleveland Monsters lost their second and third staright games this weekend as the Belleville Senators came out on top by a combined score of 9-2.

Make that three straight losses for the Cleveland Monsters. Considering their opponent for Friday and Saturday it is hardly that surprising. Belleville is the class of the division while Cleveland is in last place. Things just appeared destined to turn out this way.

Belleville scored on 50% (4/8) of their power play chances over the weekend. This is significantly higher than Cleveland’s usual 83.5% penalty kill success rate. The Monsters are usually one of the better teams in the AHL when it comes to this particular area, but not this weekend.

It didn’t really matter who was in goal for the Monsters, Belleville was able to score quite easily on both and not on that many shots either. Brad Thiessen allowed 5 goals on 20 shots Friday and Veini Vehvilainen allowed 4 goals on 21 shots Saturday.

It was just an all around bad weekend for Cleveland and sometimes those happen. Especially when Columbus has injuries of their own and have to recall players from Cleveland on a consistent basis. Ryan MacInnis appeared or the Monsters in their loss Friday prior to being recalled Saturday by the Blue Jackets. With so much change it is hard to put out a consistent group of players and even harder to win. Just the nature of being the AHL affiliate of an NHL team plagued with injures.

Cleveland will look to turn things around as they host Laval Rocket for two games on Thursday and Friday.

Monsters edged out by Marlies 4-3

The Cleveland Monsters came back from a two goal defecit to force overtime, but were unable to come away with a win, falling 4-3 to the Toronto Marlies.

The fact the Cleveland Monsters staged a 2nd period comeback as quite impressive. Unfortunately they were unable to finish the deal as a goal scored 23 seconds into overtime gave Toronto a 4-3 win.

Cleveland found themselves down two goals 7:24 into the game. Not necessarily a great spot to be in considering how the Columbus Blue Jackets have picked apart their club for any remaining talent. Trey Fix-Wolansky got the Monsters on the scoreboard with just over two minutes remaining in the 1st period. Dillon Simpson and Ryan MacInnis assisted on the goal, their 14th and 22nd assists respectively.

Toronto extended their lead to two 3:30 into the 2nd period. Cleveland continued to fight back, eventually cutting the deficit to one on a goal from Ryan MacInnis. Trey Fix-Wolansky (7) and Adam Clendening (31) assisted on the goal.

With just 36 seconds remaining in 2nd period Adam Clendening tied the game at 3. Assisting on the goal were Branden Troock (2) and Ryan MacInnis (23).

Neither team scored in the 3rd period which led to overtime. All it took was 23 seconds for Toronto’s Tanner MacMaster to end the game.

Veini Vehvilainen started in goal for Cleveland and saved 27 of 31 shots. Vehvilainen has allowed 19 goals in his past five starts, not necessarily a great for.

The Monsters only had 17 shots on goal compared to Toronto’s 31. While this is not a great number they managed to score when they needed to for the most part.

The Monsters specialty teams seemed be up to the challenge despite being short on talent. Cleveland converted two of their three chances on the power play and stopped six of Toronto’s seven power play attempts.

Cleveland will return home for two games with the Belleville Senators

Ryan MacInnis assigned to Monsters

The Monsters will have a familiar face join them for round two with the Binghamton Devils Sunday. The Columbus Blue Jackets have assigned Ryan MacInnis to Cleveland. This move is not surprising in the least bit due to MacInnis not playing in Saturday’s loss to Colorado.

Once the lineups came out for the Blue Jackets Saturday night and MacInnis was inactive it appeared more likely than not that a move was coming. That move did indeed come as Ryan MacInnis joins the team in Cleveland.

The Monsters are now able to avoid a short bench situation due to the return of MacInnis. The fact MacInnis did not play Saturday points towards the possibility of MacInnis playing Sunday for Cleveland. The Monsters having MacInnis in the lineup could go a long way towards possibly winning at home Sunday.

Just how long Ryan MacInnis stays in Cleveland is not known at this time. Columbus has another home game Monday night and could bring him back. Although, Cleveland has another home game Tuesday and it may better for everyone involved if he remains with the Monsters for the final two games of the home stand. However the possibility remains that MacInnis pulls double duty Sunday and Monday while someone else gets assigned to Cleveland.

Ryan MacInnis appeared in two games with Columbus. The soon-to-be 24-year old center registered one shot on goal in just under 16 minutes of ice time. MacInnis did not register any points, but was part of a team that continued an impressive point streak.

The puck drops for Sunday’s game at 1:00 P.M. at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

Monsters: Ryan MacInnis recalled by Columbus

The Columbus Blue Jackets need some help due to the injury of Alexander Wennberg and have recalled Ryan MacInnis from the Cleveland Monsters.

The Cleveland Monsters will be without one of their key players when they return to the ice Wednesday. Ryan MacInnnis has been recalled by the Columbus Blue Jackets due to the injury of Alexander Wennberg. It could be an extended stay for MacInnis in Columbus as Wennberg is expected to be out for 3-4 weeks.

This will be the second stint in Columbus for the 23-year old Monsters center. MacInnnis spent seven games with the Blue Jackets earlier this season, totaling one point off an assist.

Ryan MacInnis has been a mainstay in the Monsters lineup since coming to the team last season. In his first year with the team, MacInnis had 24 points (4 goals, 20 assists) in 71 games. The newcomer even contributed as Cleveland made the playoffs last season, appearing in eight games, totaling 3 points (1 goal, 2 assists).

MacInnis has 22 points (6 goals, 16 assists) in 36 games this season. Two goals have been of the power play variety, one is a shootout goal, and one is classified as a game winner. The game winner came in a lopsided 7-1 victory over the Rockford IceHogs back on October 25th. It was Cleveland’s second goal of the game after they found themselves down a goal early. The Monsters rattled off seven straight goals in order to come away with a win.

Just how long Ryan MacInnis is up with Columbus is the question. Will MacInnis get significant ice time or be just an insurance policy in case of another injury? MacInnis only saw 9:45 of ice time on average during his last stint and Alexander Wennberg was averaging 16:32. It all really depends on how MacInnis performs and whether or not other players are able to step up in Wennberg’s absence. Either way, Cleveland could be without Ryan MacInnis for quite a while.

Monsters lose in overtime to Americans 3-2

The Cleveland Monsters returned home from a lengthy road trip and took on the Rochester Americans Wednesday. Losing by a score of 3-2. This was the second consecutive loss for the Cleveland Monsters.

1st Period

Remi Elie gave Rochester an early 1-0 lead over Cleveland with a goal 3:44 into the game.

The Monsters were having a difficult time getting the puck out of their defensive zone. This did Veini Vehvilanien zero favors. Constant pressure on a goalie is never good and that is just what Vehvilainen saw early in the game.

Cleveland saw themselves down a man with just under nine minutes to go in the 1st period due to an Anton Karlsson penalty for holding an opponents stick. The Monsters successfully killed the penalty and were back to full strength without giving up a goal.

Casey Mittelstadt scored for Rochester with just over 3 minutes remaining in the 1st period, giving the Americans a 2-0 lead.

Rochester (12) finished with more shots than Cleveland (10) in the 1st period. Not exactly a recipe for success.

2nd Period

The Monsters were on a power play very early on in the 2nd period. Unfortunately they were unable to make anything of it and Rochester successfully killed the penalty.

With just under 15 minutes remaining in the period Karlsson was called for boarding, resulting in a two-minute penalty. For the second time Cleveland was able to avoid giving up a goal while shorthanded.

Brett Gallant was called for high-sticking, this led to a four minute penalty. Cleveland went on the offensive even though they were shorthanded and Ryan MacInnis scored an unassisted goal to cut the Americans lead to just one. Cleveland was able to navigate being down a man for four minutes without surrendering a goal.

The Monsters were able to cut the deficit in half in the 2nd Period thanks to four more shots on goal than Rochester (9-5).

3rd Period

Marko Dano tied the game at 2 with 6:27 gone in the 3rd period. Assisting on the goal were Ryan MacInnis and Markus Hannikainen.

A Rochester penalty with 11:04 to go in the 3rd led to a power play opportunity for the Monsters. Cleveland was not able to convert on the power play and shortly after were shorthanded due to a Calvin Thurkauf slashing penalty. Cleveland came out unscathed from this penalty and kept the game tied.

Neither team would score in the remainder of the 3rd period and the game would head to overtime.

Overtime

The game went to a 3-on-3 sudden death overtime. Rochester was able to score with 1:36 left in overtime to end the game.

The Monsters had momentum on their side for the majority of the game, coming back from two goals down. Rochester just seized the opportunity to win the game with just over a minute and a half left to play.

Cleveland will look to get back on the right track Friday as they host the Toronto Marlies.
