Garrett Wilson to Browns in CBS Sports mock

A CBS Sports mock draft has the Cleveland Browns selecting the Ohio State receiver 13th overall.

If there is one area that the Cleveland Browns need to improve in it is the wide receiver position. Wit hate uncertain future of Jarvis Landry in addition to only having Donovan Peoples-Jones and Anthony Schwartz under contract next season they need some help in this area. Ryan Wilson of CBS Sports has the Browns selecting Garrett Wilson out of Ohio State 13th overall in his latest mock draft. Wilson provided insight into the selection.

“The Browns have needs at wide receiver, for sure, but the talking points in the coming months will likely concern the QB position. We think Baker Mayfield is much better than he showed last season, in part because he wasn’t healthy. Wilson is one of the the most dynamic players in college football and he’ll give Mayfield another downfield option now that Odell Beckham Jr. is in L.A.”

Wilson mentions Cleveland needing to find a downfield option and identifies Garrett Wilson as a solution to their problem. The 21-year old receiver finished his junior season at Ohio State with 70 receptions for 1,058 yards and 12 touchdowns as he showcased his ability to make big play after big play for the Buckeyes. The latter fact should be a major concern to the Browns considering how dynamic the offenses of the Chiefs and Bills were Sunday night and the fact they nowhere near their level of firepower.

Sliding Garrett Wilson into the Browns starting lineup would be an instant upgrade to a passing attack that needs a lot of help. Granted they will need Baker Mayfield to take a massive step forward in his fifth season, adding a quality receiving target should make that task just a bit easier for the Browns signal caller.

Asante Samuel Jr. to Browns in CBS mock draft

A mock draft from Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports has the Cleveland Browns selecting the Florida State cornerback.

A mock draft appearing on CBS Sports has the Clevelnad Browns addressing a clear area of need, secondary. Even with the additions of John Johnson and Troy Hill, Cleveland still needs help and that is why this mock has Asante Samuel Jr. going to the Browns at 26 overall. Below is the reasoning from the author of the mock, Jonathan Jones.

He went to the Browns in my first mock and I’ll keep him there, even with Christian Barmore still available. Cleveland can invest heavily in the secondary.

Jonathan Jones on his explanation for why he has Asante Samuel Jr. to the Browns at 26

Pretty quick and straight to the point. Asante Samuel Jr. would be a great addition to the Browns that they can play opposite of Denzel Ward with the newly signed Hill covering the inside receivers. A clear weakness from last season could be turned into a strength if Cleveland decides to go this route.

A second player is mentioned in the mock, Christian Barmore, but with the reports of resistance to coaching surfacing that could keep the Browns from selecting the Alabama defensive lineman.

Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah to Browns in PFT mock

In Pro Football Talk’s NFL Mock Draft they have the Cleveland Browns trading up to select the Notre Dame linebacker.

There has been a ton of discussions about just what the Cleveland Browns will do with their pick. Perhaps they will stay put or maybe even trade down. One option that seems to easily dismissed is trading up, but that is what happens in Pro Football Talk’s mock draft released Monday morning. In addition to trading up, the other part of this mock that has been played down is the selection of a linebacker, Notre Dame’s Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah to be exact. For the trade it is Cleveland trading up to 21st overall with picks 26 and 91 heading to Indianapolis. Here’s the reasoning for the selection.

So everyone wants to sideline-to-sideling playmaking ability of Devin White. Owusu-Koramoah isn’t Devin White (15 pounds lighter), but he has some of White’s traits. The Golden-Domer is rangy (he played a rover position in the Irish D) and made first-team all-America last season, dropping in coverage, rushing and being a complete playmaker at the second level on defense. This is right about the area of the draft that he should be picked, and I could see others (Green Bay, New York Jets) being interested around here. I think playing behind Myles Garrett, Jadeveon Clowney and the Browns’ interior front, Owusu-Koramoah should be free to roam and be a playmaker in year one.

The middle of the Browns defense is a problem and they need to do something to address that. Selecting Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah could help in this area as they ease him into action with Anthony Walker playing a large role from the onset.

As far as the trade is concerned, this is something that the Browns should seriously consider. The Browns need quality defenders period. Trading up to ensure that a player that has been identified as a potential difference maker seems like a no-brainer. If the defense was in better shape right now trading down might make a bit more sense, but they need to be in the business of quality and not quantity.

Athletic mock has Browns taking Jaelan Phillips 26th

A mock draft from The Athletic has the Cleveland Browns adding another edge rusher to their defense.

The addition of Jadeveon Clowney did not deter a mock draft on The Athletic from having the Cleveland Browns add an edge rusher through the draft. This mock in particular has Cleveland selecting Jaelan Phillips 26th overall.

The Browns’ Jadeveon Clowney signing shouldn’t shift any focus away from an impact pass rusher — Clowney’s deal is for just one year, and his value is in his inside/outside versatility more so than an ability to come screaming around the edge. Erase his medical history and Phillips might be a top-10 option in this draft; take it into consideration, as teams must, and his potential should outweigh the risk by this point.

The key phrase in this explanation which needs some focus is “Erase his medical history”. Sorry, his medical history cannot be erased. Here’s why. Jaelan Phillips medically retired due to injuries in 2018, this is concerning. This should be enough to take Phillips off the Browns draft boards. Players do not become healthier as they get older and with the injuries of Philllips he should get a do not draft designation from Andrew Berry and the Browns.

Jamin Davis to Browns in CBS mock draft

A mock draft appearing on CBS Sports has the Cleveland Browns selecting the Kentucky linebacker with the 26th overall pick.

Another day and another mock draft. This mock is from CBS Sports and has the Cleveland Browns doing something everyone expects, drafting defense. Specifically Kentucky linebacker Jamin Davis. The explanation for the pick is below.

Cleveland has quietly had one of the best offseasons in the NFL thus far. That success now opens the Browns up to go in a number of directions with this pick, but Davis presents a potential diamond in the rough. He put together a strong pro day and has only scratched the surface of his potential.

First things first, this selection is a linebacker. The Browns desperately need help at linebacker and selecting Jamin Davis would help the defense tremendously. The problem is that with some of the recent moves by the team, linebacker is joined by defensive line as the most pressing needs for Cleveland. It is possible that the Browns select Jamin Davis on draft day, but don’t be surprised if they go in another direction.

Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah to Browns in PFF mock

A NFL mock draft from Sam Monson of Pro Football Focus has the Cleveland Browns selecting the Notre Dame linebacker.

Considering the source of this mock draft and the pick for the Cleveland Browns this is a bit surprising. Sam Monson of Pro Football Focus released a mock draft Monday which had the Browns taking a position that many do not expect, linebacker. Cleveland selects Notre Dame linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah 26th overall. (This is a mock that is done with what Monson would do if he was the GM and not what he predicts will happen according to an editor’s note.) Monson explained his selection for the Browns.

Cleveland has done an impressive job of overhauling its roster, and the team heads into the draft without many holes in need of immediate attention. Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah has elite quickness and speed for a linebacker, and he also earned one of the best PFF coverage grades in the nation in the slot, regardless of position. JOK could bring some elite versatility to the Browns’ coverage unit.

PFF’s Sam Monson on his mock selection of Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah to the Browns at 26

The surprise honestly is that a linebacker was mocked to Cleveland. There are many people that have been pounding the table for the Browns not valuing linebacker. A lot of those people also happen to reside in or are adjacent to the analytics community. So the fact that PFF has a mock that features the Browns taking Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah is a bit of a shocker.

All of that being said, Monson is right. Linebacker is a need for the Browns and drafting one would be an excellent decision after their moves in free agency. There are some linebackers on the roster who should not be playing much. Drafting Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah in addition to their signing of Anthony Walker this offseason would be a home run for this unit.

Browns: PFT mock draft would be disaster

Advertisements

Michael David Smith of ProFootballTalk has a mock draft for Round 2 of the NFL Draft and the Browns pick would be a disaster.

This is nothing against the player. This is purely about the needs of the Cleveland Browns and who is still available in Michael David Smith’s mock draft. Smith has Cleveland taking Baylor wide receiver Denzel Mims with the 41st overall pick.

The problem? The Browns actual needs are on the defensive side of the ball. Safety, linebacker, defensive line, this is what needs to be addressed. Cleveland bypasses players such as Antoine Winfield Jr., Grant Delpit, Jeremy Chinn, and Xaiver McKinney. These are just players at the safety position! Defensive tackle Justin Madubuike could be of interest. Same for cornerback Trevon Diggs, and linebacker Malik Harrison. Cleveland needs defensive help first. Addressing the offense is not an immediate need at this point in time.

At some point Cleveland needs to add another wide receiver, just not in Round 2. Other positions should also be taken in Rounds 3 and 4. Free agency may be a better avenue to acquire a third wide receiver for an offensive scheme which may not utilize that particular set all that often. The Browns would be better off finding a tight end to replace David Njoku than drafting a wide receiver, but drafting a tight end should still take a backseat to fixing the defense.

Peter King has Jedrick Wills Jr. to Browns in mock

Peter King’s mock draft has the Cleveland Browns drafting a player that makes a lot of sense, Alabama’s Jedrick Wills Jr.

Jedrick Wills Jr. could be someone who makes a difference right from the start. That must be part of the reason why Peter King has the Cleveland Browns taking him 10th overall in his mock draft.

King went on to say that “Andrew Thomas is the preferred player here” and makes sure to mention the possibility of a trade down. A scenario that Chad Reuter went too far with in his latest mock. King made sure to mention that the Browns “crave picks” and the possibility of trading down in the draft is very much in play. Outside of a complete disaster scenario, Cleveland should stay put and make the pick at 10 and not trade down.

Peter King said something interesting in the second half of explanation of the pick.

Wills is a more natural right tackle as opposed to Thomas being a two-year left tackle at Georgia. There are some teams that have Wills the top-rated tackle in a good class of them, so if Cleveland gets him, it’s a good pick. He allowed one sack over the past two seasons at Alabama.

The old left tackle vs. right tackle debate. Andrew Berry seemed to put this to rest just a little while ago. Any sort of hesitation due to position appears to be a non-issue.

If the Browns take Jedrick Wills Jr. it would be a great move. They need a tackle and Wills should be able to start right away. This is exactly what they need right now. Solidify the line and then proceed to evaluate Baker Mayfield in what is a make or break season.

Browns picks in Dane Brugler’s 7 round mock

Advertisements

Dane Brugler of The Athletic put together a thorough 7 round mock draft and has the Cleveland Bronws making some interesting picks.

It takes a lot of time to start and finish a 7 round mock draft, but that is just what Dane Brugler of The Athletic did. Here are Brugler’s picks for the Cleveland Browns.

10. OT Mekhi Becton Louisville

First up is a increasing popular selection Mekhi Becton out of Louisville. There are others besides Brugler mocking Becton to the Browns at 10.

Brugler did provide some reasoning for this selction.

The Browns made a sizable upgrade at right tackle with the signing of Jack Conklin, but left tackle remains a large question mark. You could make an argument for any of these top tackles here or even a trade down for a player like Ezra Cleveland, but I think Becton fits what they want on offense.

Brugler does mention a trade down scenario which cannot be discounted. There is a possibility that Cleveland does trade down if a specific player they are targeting is no longer available.

There has been a trend of mocking Isaiah Simmons to Cleveland here and if that does happen tackle must be their next pick. Whether that pick is at 41 or if they trade up would be the question in that particular scenario.

41. S Jeremy Chinn Southern Illinois

It is not a secret that the Cleveland Browns need a safety. Even with the finalized deal with Karl Joseph, the fact he still has not completed a physical is alarming. Cleveland signed Joseph and Andrew Sendejo to one-year deals and need a longterm solution at the position. Jeremy Chinn could be just that after they let both Joseph and Sendejo leave after the year.

74. LB Jordyn Brooks Texas Tech

Another obvious hole on the Cleveland defense? Linebacker. The Browns let two players leave and now have to do something to address the position. Jordyn Brooks could join the group of Mack Wilson and Sione Takitaki and hope they can at worst hold down the fort.

97. EDGE Trevis Gipson Tulsa

Cleveland has been rumored to be interested in both Yannick Ngakoue and Jadeveon Clowney lately. This could be the motivation behind this particular selection. Even if Trevis Gipson is not an instant starter, the Browns still need depth on their defensive line as Chad Thomas is mostly forgettable and replaceable.

115. WR Donovan Peoples-Jones Michigan

Donovan Peoples-Jones is just one of many recent players who are coming out of Michigan who have not fully developed. Peoples-Jones flashes potential from time to time, but is far from consistent. A recurring issue is failure to gain separation and that poses a problem when making the jump to the next level. Cleveland may be without one or both of their top receivers in the next few seasons, but Peoples-Jones does not seem like a suitable replacement for Odell Beckham Jr. and/or Jarvis Landry.

187. CB John Reid Penn State

The Browns secondary desperately needs help and adding John Reid out of Penn State could help. Cleveland essentially swapped T.J. Carrie for Kevin Johnson, but it is only a one-year commitment. A solution beyond 2020 is needed.

244. TE Cheyenne O’Grady Arkansas

Cleveland may have signed Austin Hooper in free agency, but they still need another competent tight end as David Njoku’s time appears to be running out. While little should be expected out of a seventh round pick, taking O’Grady and giving him a chance is more than worth the pick.

Daniel Jeremiah has Isaiah Simmons to Browns

Advertisements

NFL.com’s Daniel Jeremiah released his latest mock draft and has the Cleveland Browns selecting Clemson’s Isaiah Simmons.

It seems like somebody told someone something about the Cleveland Browns and Isaiah Simmons. Simmons to Cleveland at 10 has been gaining some traction lately as multiple mock drafts that have been released have this as Cleveland’s pick. Daniel Jeremiah has the Browns taking the talented Clemson product at 10th overall in his third mock draft.

Here is the reasoning for the pick from Jeremiah.

The Browns need another offensive tackle, but Simmons might be too good to bypass. He is the perfect defender to match up with the division’s most dangerous playmaker, Lamar Jackson.

While drafting a player specifically to matchup with one player in the division is a flawed process, he is not wrong with what he said initially. If Isaiah Simmons is available at 10 he is too good to pass up. Simmons would be an instant starter on a defense that let two players leave this past offseason. There is not a single linebacker on the team who can be pointed to as a starter at this point in time and Simmons could help alleviate that issue.

Another reason that Simmons makes sense is three tackles go before Cleveland is on the clock. Tristan Wirfs is the first tackle off the board as the Giants take him with the fourth pick. Jedrick Wills Jr. and Mekhi Becton go in back-to-back picks to the Cardinals and Jaguars right before the Browns pick. The early run on tackles could lead Cleveland to taking Isaiah Simmons and get in on the second run of lineman in Round 2. That is a gamble though as three more tackles go in Round 1. Andrew Thomas goes to Tampa Bay at 15, Joshua Jones to Miami at 26, and Austin Jackson to Seattle at 27.

What Cleveland needs to do is decide if they want to take a risk with the tackle position. If the draft plays out this way it may be worth it. Isaiah Simmons can be an impact defender and the Browns can still get their left tackle in Round 2.
