1. How long until the New York Jets fire Adam Gase?

The New York Jets lost again and somehow Adam Gase is currently still employed. Denver was on their third quarterback of the season and still came out victorious over the Jets. Adam Gase is obviously a bad coach who only got his opportunities due to being around one of the greatest quarterbacks ever in Peyton Manning. We’ve seen Gase coach in two places since he had Manning running his offense and it is very apparent that the success is because of Peyton and not Gase. Firing Gase this season will probably not have an impact in the win-loss column, but it could help take a step in the right direction culture wise.

2. Marlins vs. Cubs

The Miami Marlins shocked many when they defeated the Chicago Cubs in Game 1 of their series. Game 2 was postponed on Thursday and will take place today at 2:00 P.M. Can the Marlins pull off the upset and send the superior Cubs home early? I’m not sure but I will definitely be watching that game today.

3. Cardinals vs. Padres

What a series this has been. The Padres and Cardinals have split the first two games of their series and now face a win or go home scenario. If San Diego had Mike Clevinger or Dinelson Lamet they may have won the series already. Once I saw that the Padres would be without both pitchers I really thought the Cardinals could advance. St. Louis is good enough to at least compete with better teams and the fact they didn’t have to face Clevinger and Lamet may lead to them advancing to the Divisional Series.

With A Jimmmitude Thursday October 1, 2020: Thoughts about Thursday Night Football and the teams eliminated from the MLB Postseason.

1. Thursday Night Football

The Denver Broncos are facing the New York Jets on Thursday Night Football and I couldn’t be less interested. Even if both teams were at full strength I would have limited interest. The fact of the matter is that both teams have a ton of injured players and that will impact the quality of play. The game may be entertaining, but for different reasons entirely. It might be due to poor play or absolutely hilarious mistakes from either team. The Jets are apparently not prepared to fire Adam Gase, but a disastrous showing might be in the best interest of the team as it might actually lead to his firing.

2. Eliminated from the MLB Postseason

Wednesday saw three teams eliminated from the 2020 MLB Postseason, the Cleveland Baseball Club, Minnesota Twins, and the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Twins are frauds, enough said. Minnesota dazzles during the regular season, but becomes choke artists once the word “Postseason” appears.

Toronto is a team a year away that needs some more experience and to add a few more players to the mix. They have a great core and are a team on the rise. While they may not compete for a division title immediately, Wild Card berths seem to be the path for Toronto for the time being.

Cleveland just drew a bad matchup in the New York Yankees and were outclassed in both of their games. They are just not quite equipped to compete with the best teams in baseball at this time.

3. Decisive Game 3 in Oakland

The Oakland Athletics and Chicago White Sox are playing a winner take all Game 3 on Thursday. Oakland is the better team and should be able to make their way through the Wild Card round. The White Sox are not pushovers, but there is a clear difference between them and the Athletics. Either team could win and that is what makes this game a must watch.

Browns should make a move to acquire Jamal Adams

The Cleveland Browns should make a move to acquire Jamal Adams from the New York Jets.

Jamal Adams and the New York Jets are reportedly at an impasse in regards to contract negotiations. New York could look to move the safety and the Cleveland Browns should be interested. Actually, they should be more than just interested, they should find a way to acquire the former first rounder.

The price for Jamal Adams will be steep, but the Browns should make it happen. The defensive side of the ball is full of holes and if they want to have any chance of coming close to .500 they need to address it ASAP. Outside of multiple first round picks, Cleveland should accept almost any deal.

How will it work money wise?

This will without a doubt be the biggest concern in acquiring Jamal Adams. Adams wants a new deal and luckily the Browns will be able to make a deal for Adams work. Why is that you ask? It is quite simple really.

The reality is that at least one of their three pass catchers who make a lot of money (Odell Beckham Jr., Jarvis Landry, Austin Hooper) will not be on the team in the next few years. Take the money that Adams will be paid and simply apply it to the room created by the team moving on from one of these players.

There is also the fact that only one of the players on a rookie deal with at least two years of experience is worthy of a new contract. That player? Myles Garrett. Baker Mayfield has not done enough to warrant an extension. Nick Chubb is a running back, so any sort of discussion there can be discarded immediately. Denzel Ward may enter that conversation, but injuries are a concern. Finally, David Njoku has zero business being on the roster. That fear so many had just a year ago about a lack of future cap space was a complete waste of time since many of their young players are not performing up to expectations and are not worthy of extensions. Due to their shortcomings there will be money available to make a new contract for Adams work.

The Browns defense would be less of a liability

Trading for Jamal Adams would elevate the talent level of the defense and give the perception of a long term plan on that side of the ball. Right now Cleveland does not have that as they opted to sign defensive players to one-year deals which will only create more turnover next offseason. Acquiring and extending someone like Adams would help limit the impact of those players leaving next year. This move would be about creating a consistent and productive core group on that side of the football. The Browns may have that on offense (fingers crossed), but they are very far away from having on that on defense. Adding Jamal Adams would bring the Browns one step closer to having a complete football team and they would be in a much better situation (short term and long term) if they make a move to acquire him.

Adam Gase would use Browns as threat

Current New York Jets and former Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase would use a trade to the Cleveland Browns as a threat.

Adam Gase confirms what we all thought. He’s a jerk. Instead of trying to actually find a way to coach his team he would threaten to trade them if they did not “fall in line”. And of course the place he threatened them with was Cleveland. The thought process being to send them to the Browns to die.

This isn’t a new thought process. Many teams and front offices have used this strategy. This doesn’t make it any less of a jerk move. Apparently the jerk store has not run out of people who are hell bent on ending the career of a player they do not get along with.

Adam Gase sent Jarvis Landry to Cleveland after it became apparent that they could not work together. It was clear that they didn’t get a long and the relationship between the two was beyond repair. Because of this Landry got what Gase probably assumed was the end of his career.

However the joke is on him.  Landry is in a better position now than under Gase. Miami is now a complete dumpster fire who is just looking to trade anyone and everyone. Gase is in New York and his career did not get off on the right foot after he looked like a complete psychopath in his introductory press conference.

Pressure is on the Browns to win in Week 2

Advertisements

After Week 1’s disaster the Cleveland Browns are under a ton of pressure to defeat the New York Jets on Monday Night Football.

Yes, this sounds ridiculous especially considering the latest developments with Sam Darnold and various other Jets. That being said the pressure is on the Cleveland Browns to win in Week 2.

Sam Darnold is out for the Jets, Le’Veon Bell may not play, Quinnen Williams is dealing with an ankle injury and C.J. Mosley did not practice. New York looks like they will be down some important players on Monday. In theory this takes pressure off the Browns to win. The problem is, the exact opposite is true. Now there is more pressure to win than before.

The extra pressure is due to the fact that on paper the Browns should beat down the Jets. Cleveland was a better team before the injury updates and the talent gap is even larger now.

The fact of the matter is that the Browns cannot lose to an injury depleted Jets team. Considering the letdown that Week 1 was, they cannot drop to 0-2 against a team they have no business losing to. An argument can be made that they had no business losing to the Titans last week, but that no longer matters. The game is over and there is nothing that can be done about it.

A win on Monday does a few things.
  • First off it revitalizes the team and gets them back in a winning mindset.
  • Secondly it will take pressure off the team and the coaching staff.
  • Finally it will allow some of the stink of Week 1’s performance to dissipate just a bit.

It feels like the Browns overlooked their opponent in Week 1 and got punched right in the mouth. What the Browns cannot do is overlook an opponent for a second straight week just because they will be missing some key players. If they do that they could be staring 0-2 right in the face and the talk from irrelevant individuals will only get louder.

Browns need to reset, focus on Week 2

Advertisements

The Cleveland Browns were stuck in neutral in Week 1. They need to take this week to make adjustments and get ready for Week 2 against the New York Jets.

It is time to reset and get ready for Week 2. Week 1 was an absolute disaster for the Cleveland Browns. It was a penalty-fest which took a toll on the Browns. Cleveland definitely committed some stupid penalties but there were plenty of examples of lopsided officiating.

Now it is time to focus on the New York Jets. Cleveland will face the Jets in Monday Night Football and will have the opportunity for redemption in front of a national audience.

Many view this as a rematch of the Baker Mayfield coming out party on Thursday Night Football last year. While both teams and quarterbacks are the same, the roster construction is very different. Cleveland has a much improved roster as do the Jets.

This is much easier said than done but Week 1’s outcome will need to be forgotten. There are two things that need to be worked on going into Week 2.

First is discipline.

Do not commit stupid penalties and avoid anything that could remotely be called a penalty. All eyes are on the Browns and plenty will try to take them down a peg or two. Opponents will try and bait the Browns into doing something stupid. Remember, it is not who started a scuffle to be penalized but the last person to do something. They end up being caught every time and they are the one who gets the penalty whether it is fair or not.

Second is protecting Baker Mayfield.

There was a distinct difference in Cleveland and Tennessee’s protection schemes. Tennessee was missing key offensive lineman but were able to protect Marcus Mariota. Bunching receivers next to the line in an effort to slow down the Cleveland pass rush. Cleveland would be wise to take this strategy and copy it immediately. Considering that the Browns are taking many shots downfield, they need give Baker time in the pocket. Something that he did not have Sunday. If they opt to not do that the offense needs to adapt more of a quick strike philosophy rather than deep shot after deep shot.

The Browns are definitely more than capable of bouncing back and defeating the Jets in New York next week. They just have to adjust to what they saw Sunday.
