Darren Waller traded to Giants

The Las Vegas Raiders have agreed to a trade with the New York Giants.

Darren Waller is the latest player to earn the title of “Former Raider”. Las Vegas has agreed to send the tight end to the New York Giants for a third-round pick (100th overall). It is a compensatory pick that New York received in the trade that sent Kadarius Toney to Kansas City.

This trade provides the Raiders some cap relief as they save over $11 million while only absorbing a small amount of dead money ($660,000). Waller signed a three-year $51 million extension with the Raiders prior to last season with an opt out after 2023.

Finding ways to save money is very important for the Raiders as they are not the most financially stable team. Cash flow issues and overall lack of cash on hand can be directly attributed to some of the decisions made by the franchise in recent years.

Darren Waller caught on with the Raiders after two relatively uninspiring seasons in Baltimore. After it looked like history was about to repeat itself, Waller burst on the scene with a 90 catch 1,145 yard, four touchdown season. Waller would add 162 receptions, 1,1861 yards, and 11 touchdowns over the next 27 games. Landing in New York after an injury shortened seasons should provide the 31-year old a fresh start to regain his former form.

Landon Collins returns to Giants

The New York Giants are bringing back a familiar face to their defense.

Landon Collins is returning to the New York Giants. Collins informed Josina Anderson of the signing and will join his new/old team in London.

The veteran safety spent the first four seasons of his career with New York, earning All-Pro honors in 2016 and was a three-time Pro-Bowler from 2016-2018. After his time with the Giants came to an end Landon Collins spent three seasons in Washington with mixed results. Washington released Collins after playing half of his six-year contract he signed in 2019. Perhaps returning to the surprising 3-1 Giants could be just what Collins needs at this point in his career.

Observations from Browns preseason win over Giants

Thoughts and observations from the Cleveland Browns 17-13 win over the New York Giants in the second preseason game.

There was a lot of enthusiasm coming off the Cleveland Browns decisive win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in their first preseason game, but the second week of the preseason was just a bit different. Yes, the Browns won 17-13, the final result is not really what matters in this case. The game was basically a scrimmage of backups, some things stood out from the contest.

The Giants are bad, but better than the Jaguars

The relative ease that the Browns dominated the Jaguars last week was not really there this week against New York. Overall the Browns have the edge in the talent department, but the gap is significantly smaller than when they faced Jacksonville. It is important to note that while this could be different when the starters are in, but as far as depth goes they are not that far apart.

KhaDarel Hodge made a play on the ball when another receiver didn’t

There was a sequence early in the game where Case Keenum dropped back to pass and proceeded to float a ball into the endzone that was eventually ruled incomplete. Given a second opportunity throwing to nearly an identical route to a different receiver the result was different. Keenum did manage to put more behind the pass and placed it in a spot where only KhaDarel Hodge could catch it. Hodge managed to make a play on the ball by high pointing it and coming down in bounds for a touchdown.

The previous play that resulted in an incompletion was thrown to Rashard Higgins. Higgins should have come back to the ball and bailed his quarterback out, but that did not happen. Later in the game when Davion Davis faced a similar situation while the team was looking to convert a first down, the proper adjustment was made and the first down was successfully converted. The stark difference in effort and decision making on the part of the receiver is quite notable.

Case Keenum isn’t going anywhere

If the honeymoon between Browns twitter and Kyle Lauletta isn’t over yet it should be. After an obvious overreaction to last week there was the rogue movement that was trying to reasonably suggest that the Browns should trade Case Keenum in favor of Lauletta. Well if anything that this game taught us it is that Lauletta is nothing more than Captain Checkdown and he can be prone to making mistakes in bunches. Mistakes such as throwing into coverage down and across the field for no reason and attempting to run the ball and taking an unnecessary hit as the half was ending in a preseason game, a hit which ultimately ended in a fumble. If this is what the Kyle Lauletta experience is the Browns would be wise to run away as fast as possible.

At the end of the day there is still no reason to trade Case Keenum because Kyle Lauletta is on the roster.

What about the Browns offense?

Through two preseason games we have learned pretty much nothing about the offense of the Cleveland Browns. The run game was utilized a fair amount of times, but that aspect of their roster is not really under evaluation at this point. Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt are firmly entrenched at their positions. That means that other position groups such as wide receiver and tight end are the focus of evaluation process, which leads to why they passed the ball as much as they did despite averaging 6.5 yards per carry on the day. Cleveland needs to figure out who of the bubble players who are pass catchers will make the roster. Running a higher volume of pass plays with those players gives the team a better idea of who to keep and who to let go.

With a Jimmmitude: TNF, Kemp, World Series

Thursday Night Football was actually sort of entertaining

For a game that did not seem good to begin and was a two-score game late in the 4th quarter, Thursday Night Football managed to provide some entertainment. Carson Wentz was able to lead the Eagles to a victory over the New York Giants and that was impressive. For as much fun as that was, Giants quarterback Daniel Jones got a ton of attention for his 80-yard run.

Jones’ run was incredible and seemingly came out of nowhere. Unfortunately the turf monster got him and tripped him up before he could score a touchdown.

This run was the fastest by a quarterback since 2018.

Of course the internet had some fun with Jones’ run.

The music from The Price is Right game Cliffhangers was added in a reply.

Shawn Kemp

Former NBA Seattle SuperSonics star Shawn Kemp is opening a dispensary in Seattle and is going with the most straight forward name possible, Shawn Kemp’s Cannabis. The name is pretty much to the point and incredibly boring. Missing the opportunity to go with a name like Sonic Chronic is incredibly disappointing.

World Series Game 3 Tonight

The Tampa Bay Rays and Los Angeles Dodgers will square off in Game 3 of the World Series Friday night, each team having 1 win each. Tampa was able to come out on top and get a much needed win Wednesday with the Dodgers used a bullpen approach, a strategy that is more synonymous with Tampa than Los Angeles. While it seems simplistic to and casual to say winning a World Series game is a “must win”, it’s about the pitching matchups. Tyler Glasnow and Blake Snell pitched the first two games setting up “Ground Chuck” himself Charlie Morton for Game 3. Not coming away with a win in one of the first two games could have sank the Rays before Morton even made an appearance.

Tampa is now in position to take a possible 2-1 lead in the series before the games really begin with their pitching staff as Tampa’s starters for Games 4 and 5 are TBD. Los Angeles is favored (as they should be), but Tampa showed in Game 2 that they are more than capable of defeating the almighty Dodgers.

Damion Ratley claimed by New York Giants

Advertisements

Former Cleveland Browns wide receiver Damion Ratley has been claimed by the New York Giants.

Damion Ratley has a new home. After being cut by the Cleveland Browns on Saturday the third year receiver was claimed by the New York Giants.

The Cleveland Browns selected Damion Ratley in the 6th Round of the 2018 NFL Draft. This was the second pick of the former John Dorsey regime that the team cut this past weekend (the other being Chad Thomas). In his two years with the team Ratley caught 25 passes for 344 yards and 1 touchdown with sporadic playing time.

There simply was not enough room on the roster for Damion Ratley. The Browns are running an offense which not rely as much on the wide receiver position, limiting his chances to make an impact. Instead Cleveland will use Rashard Higgins as their third wide receiver, a role which is not important in this offensive scheme.

Joe Thomas gives some free advice to Giants

Advertisements

The Internet had many takes and opinions on the New York Giants benching Eli Manning. Joe Thomas gave his opinion on the method used by Pat Shurmur.

Former Cleveland Browns All-Pro left tackle Joe Thomas chimed in on the New York Giants quarterback situation. The Giants should do themselves a favor and take the free advice.

(In case you wondering, the flipping a coin comment is a reference to his former coach Romeo Crennel deciding on whether to start Derek Anderson or Charlie Frye in a 2007 exhibition game.)

Thomas is someone who has experienced plenty of changes at the quarterback position during his career and can be considered an expert on the subject. Especially when it involves a former head coach of his. Joe Thomas has heard every way of saying that a team is making a change at quarterback. Thomas knows which ways are better than others. Safe to say that this isn’t one of the better ones.

Pat Shurmur broadcasting that he’s going with his gut instead of I don’t know, using his eyes to make a change at quarterback is comical. Even if he just uses some stereotypical coach speak it would come across a bit better than this.

It does not take a rocket scientist to tell that Eli Manning’s best days are behind him. The average person can tell that Eli is not who he used to be. The Giants might be better served making a change from their longtime quarterback. That being said, who knows what Daniel Jones will do.

There is nothing wrong with Pat Shurmur going with his gut, just don’t make a proclamation to the world about it. The problem for the Giants and Shurmur is that they have predictably backed themselves into a corner. This usually does not end up well. If Jones fails it may push Shurmur out the door in New York. Playing quarterback roulette in a losing season never ends up well. It typically happens as a last ditch effort to save a job even though his fate may have been sealed beforehand.

Nobody knows what the end result will be with Pat Shurmur, Eli Manning, Daniel Jones, and the New York Giants. There are plenty of examples over the years of things going bad. Time will tell if this follows the same path as the countless others.
