Cleveland blown out in Cincinnati

The Cleveland Baseball Club was on the wrong side of a lopsided score, losing by a score of 10-3 to the Cincinnati Reds on the road.

It was not a great night for the Cleveland Baseball Club at Great American Ball Park. The Cincinnati Reds had their way pummeled Cleveland’s pitching. Even though it was Cleveland who struck first, the Reds scored 10 of the next 12 runs as they ran away with an easy win.

Logan Allen was Cleveland’s starter and didn’t last long. Allen was only able to go 2 innings after allowing 4 runs (5 total) on 3 hits with 2 strikeouts. This was not the start they needed as they began a three-game series with National League rules.

Phil Maton followed Allen and was not much better. The Reds scored 2 runs on 2 hits in 1 inning against Cleveland’s first reliever of the night.

In a recurring theme it was Cal Quantrill who was the next victim for the Reds. Quantrill allowed 2 runs on 2 hits and 3 walks in 2 innings.

Tyler Stephan would follow and allow 1 run in 2 innings on 4 hits.

Cleveland will look for a better result Saturday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 4:10 P.M.

Ohio Cup begins with Cleveland traveling to Cincinnati

The road trip continues for the Cleveland Baseball Club as they travel to Cincinnati to take on the Reds at Great American Ball Park.

It was triumphant win for the Cleveland Baseball Club on Thursday as they earned a series split with the Chicago White Sox. Cleveland will be looking to carry that momentum into the weekend as they square off with the Cincinnati Reds.

It will be the third start of the year for Logan Allen as he looks for a repeat performance of his last start which saw him allow only 1 run on 2 hits in a 5-2 victory over Detroit. A similar performance for Allen Friday would put Cleveland in position to take Game 1.

Cincinnati’s starter is Jeff Hoffman, also making his third start of the season. Hoffman failed to make it out of the 5th inning against Arizona in a 8-3 loss. In previous matchups Hoffman has kept some Cleveland bats in check in 32 at-bats. Austin Hedges does have a home run for his only hit in 7 at-bats against Hoffman while the other four hits in Cleveland’s lineup were all singles. A better performance across the board will be needed from Cleveland in order to come away with a win.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 P.M. at Great American Ball Park.

Cleveland completes sweep of Tigers

Advertisements

It was a 5-2 win for the Cleveland Baseball Club as they completed the three game sweep of the visiting Detroit Tigers at Progressive Field.

Cleveland came into Sunday with the chance to complete their first sweep of the season and seized that opportunity with a 5-2 win. A fairly consistent offensive approach produced 7 hits in 8 innings and combined with their 7 walks and a few Tigers errors paved the way to victory. Unlike their win the previous night, no long balls were needed this time around.

Things were dicey early with Logan Allen on the mound as Detroit took an early 1-0 lead. The Tigers lead combined with the high pitch count early did not look like the recipe for success. Luckily Allen would calm down as he did not allow another run in his 5 innings of work. Allen calming down and settling in after a bumpy start allowed the offense to naturally get into the groove of the game and back him up.

The Cleveland offense was able to score three unanswered runs to take a 3-1 lead through the middle innings. Some hustle from Eddie Rosario highlighted their first run scoring in the 2nd while Cesar Hernandez was still swinging a hot bat for the second game in a row to drive in their second run.

With Nick Wittgren on the mound Detroit struck back on a Wilson Ramos to cut the Cleveland lead to one. The home run from Ramos was the only hit allowed by Wittgren in his single inning of work.

Never too late for drama

James Karinchak came on in the 8th with Cleveland clinging to a one-run lead and did some work. After walking the leadoff batter Karinchak struck out the next three in order to end the inning. This ability to rattle off three strikeouts in a row is why Karinchak has the trust of Terry Francona.

The bottom of the 8th provided some insurance innings for the Cleveland bullpen. Franmil Reyes came through with a single allowing Jose Ramirez and Eddie Rosario to score. With Cleveland’s lead now at three, Emmanuel Clase came on to close things out.

After walking Jemier Candelario to start the inning, Clase bounced back with a strikeout of Wilson Ramos. Jonathan Schoop provided some hope for Detroit with an infield single, but it was all for naught. Clase would get the much needed double play ball off the bat of Nomar Mazara to end the game.

With the sweep Cleveland will travel to Chicago to take on the White Sox for a four-game series starting Monday.

Cleveland takes on Detroit in final game of series

The Cleveland Baseball Club is looking for a series sweep against the Detroit Tigers in their final game of their three game series.

Saturday night provided the Cleveland Baseball Club with everything they could have hoped for. A dominant pitching performance from Aaron Civale with five home runs leading to an 11-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Cleveland now has the chance to sweep the Tigers after nearly being swept a week before.

It will be the second start of the season for Logan Allen. Allen pitched in a losing effort on Monday as Cleveland was shut out 3-0 against the Royals. The young lefty allowed 2 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings. Both runs that came across to score against Allen were on a two-run homer from Whit Merrifield. Allen has only faced the Tigers for a handful of at-bats (15), allowing 4 hits, 4 walks, 3 RBI, and 1 home run to Grayson Greiner.

Jose Urena will be the Tigers starter in what is also his second start of the season. Minnesota pounded Urena in a 15-6 loss, allowing 5 runs on 4 hits and 4 walks. The former Marlin has not been the most consistent pitcher in his career, but at his best he is better than his previous start. There are two batters in the Cleveland lineup with with extensive history against Urena, Amed Rosario and Cesar Hernandez. Rosario is 6-15 with 2 doubles while Herndanez is 9-33 with 3 home runs and 1 triple. Franmil Reyes has also homered once in six at-bats and so as Josh Naylor in just two.

First pitch is schedule for 1:10 P.M.

Cleveland shut out by Royals in home opener

The Cleveland Baseball Club only managed 3 hits as they were shut out by the Kansa City Royals 3-0.

It’s hard to win with only 3 hits and the Cleveland Baseball Club found that out first hand Monday. The Kansas City Royals came to town and shut down Cleveland’s offense and handed them a 3-0 loss. Jose Ramirez, Amed Rosario, and Franmil Reyes were the only Cleveland batters to register a hit in the contest.

There were two chances for Cleveland to score in the contest, the first came in the 4th. Franmil Reyes doubled with two outs in the inning with Amed Rosario walking next. The inning would end with Josh Naylor flying out to left.

Cleveland’s second chance came in the 9th which provided some drama. Cesar Hernandez walked to start off the inning and that was followed by a Jose Ramirez single. Royals pitcher Jesse Hahn induced a double play off the bat of Eddie Rosario and ended the inning with a Franmil Reyes groundout.

Cleveland pitching

Logan Allen drew the start for the Cleveland Baseball Club and pitched admirably. Allen went 5 inning and allowed 2 runs on 5 hits with 3 strikeouts while walking 2. The only real blemish on his line was giving up a two-run homer to Whit Merrifield in the 2nd inning.

The problem for Allen was that he fell behind 3-0 to Merrifield and grooved a fastball right down the middle. This was not a good strategy when facing an accomplished hitter like Merrifield and that was evidenced by this home run.

Triston McKenzie made his 2021 debut and struck out 5 over 3.2 innings. McKenzie allowed 1 run and 2 hits and 4 walks. The run given up by McKenzie? Also driven in by Merrifield via a sacrifice fly. James Karinchak would take over for McKenzie and strike out the only batter he faced.

The Cleveland Baseball Club has a day off on Tuesday before the second and final game of the series with the Kansas City Royals. Perhaps the day off can give the team the time it needs to try and fix their just over 3 run per game average which is one of the lower marks in the league. If not, the bottom end of expected offensive production could be the result for more games than it should.

McKenzie, Quantrill, Allen make Opening Day roster

Advertisements

The three pitchers have made the Opening Day roster for the Cleveland Baseball Club.

The pitching staff for the Cleveland Baseball Club is taking shape. Triston McKenzie, Cal Quantrill, and Logan Allen have made the Opening Day roster per reports.

This seemed to be the end result after the team traded Adam Plutko Saturday to the Baltimore Orioles.

Quantrill should figure to be an important option out of the bullpen while McKenzie and Allen fill in the rotation in some manner. There is the possibility that the latter two could be piggyback options as mentioned by Zack Meisel. Considering the lack of innings pitched between the two this could be the best path forward to ensure the best performance from the two young pitchers. This also allows the team some flexibility with their pitching if there is a reason to adjust due to injury or concerns with effectiveness.

Cleveland makes four roster moves Tuesday

The Cleveland Baseball Club made four roster moves Tuesday, including placing Mike Clevinger and Zach Plesac on the restricted list.

There were four moves made by the Cleveland Baseball Club Tuesday that were not all that surprising. Placing pitchers Mike Clevinger and Zach Plesac on the restricted list was expected. Both pitchers violated team protocols while in Chicago this past weekend.

The team also activated Tyler Naquin and recalled Logan Allen.

The activation of Naquin may help the struggling Cleveland outfield, a group that has been anemic to say the least. Cleveland’s offense as a whole has struggled, but the outfield has contributed the least. The ever-changing hodgepodge has left a lot to be desired and perhaps Naquin can provide stability in that area.

Logan Allen is getting his chance in 2020 due to Cleveland needing pitching after placing the aforementioned Clevinger and Plesac on the restricted list. Allen could be counted on to eat some innings while Cleveland works their way through this current stretch without two starting pitchers.

Indians add four more in draft

The Cleveland Indians added four more players in the MLB amateur draft Thursday including two pitchers highlighted by another Logan Allen.

Cleveland selected Carson Tucker and Tanner Burns on the first day of the 2020 MLB amateur draft, they added four more players on second day. The Indians added two more pitchers, an outfielder, and a shortstop.

56. Logan Allen – Left-handed pitcher

Yes, the Cleveland Indians now have two players named Logan Allen. Better yet, both are left-handed pitchers. This provided some entertainment on Twitter Thursday.

https://twitter.com/Logan__Allen/status/1271204162097811460?s=20

Sarah Langs pointed out some fun facts about Logan Allen and the new Logan Allen.

If the new Logan Allen makes the big leagues with the old Logan Allen, that could be fun from a comedic standpoint.

95. Petey Halpin – Outfielder

Petey Halpin is a left-handed outfielder with his running ability and his arm being his highest rated tools. Halpin’s’ bat control is also considered to be above average. The only issue seems to be that his power is a work in progress, although that could develop in time. Halpin is committed to the University of Texas and could decide to go to college if he does not sign with the Indians.

124. Milan Tolentino – Shortstop

Cleveland selected Carson Tucker in the first round, but decided that they wanted to select another shortstop in Milan Tolentino. Tolentino could move to a different position if necessary, but that conversation is a long way away. Tolentino could opt to go to UCLA if he does not believe that Cleveland is the best situation for him or if he thinks he could get drafted higher next year.

154. Mason Hickman – Right-handed Pitcher

With their final pick the Cleveland Indians selected 6-foot 6-inch righty Mason Hickman. Hickman has great command and spin rate with a fastball that tops out in the low-90’s, but as well all know could improve with the right help.

Logan Allen provides input on MLB dispute

Advertisements

Cleveland Indians pitcher Logan Allen took to twitter to prove some input and clear some things up when it comes to the ongiong MLB discussion.

When it comes to the labor and pay dispute currently going on in Major League Baseball there is a lot going on that makes things difficult. Cleveland Indians pitcher Logan Allen hopped on twitter in an effort to clear some things up.

It all started when Allen quote tweeted Jake Diekman.

Allen is letting people know that there is a lot of information out there and even the players do not know what is going on. Lastly states he wants to represent Cleveland, a pretty tame start.

Logan Allen then quote tweeted Jared Carrabis of Barstool Sports.

After that it was go time.

Allen makes it abundantly clear that he does not have a part in the negations. The fact of that matter is that this is true for a large amount of players. It is not as simple as some make it seem.

Another response claimed that teams would go bankrupt and that was shot down rather quickly.

Another quote tweet from Allen, this time it is a tweet from Kevin Pillar. Pillar was making it known about the percentage of players making $1 million or less, a far cry from the Mike Trout’s and Gerritt Cole’s of the world everyone is focused on.

Indians: Options to replace Emmanuel Clase

Advertisements

The suspension of Emmanuel Clase will have an impact on the Cleveland Indians bullpen and other arms will have to step up during his absence.

Emmanuel Clase had a chance to fully recover from his back injury and rejoin the Indians bullpen when the 2020 season eventually starts. That all went out the window once he was suspended for 80 games due to a PED violation. No one is able to replace the velocity or movement of Clase, but his absence could provide other arms a chance to make an impact this season.

James Karinchak

The first name that comes to mind is James Karinchak. Karinchak was optioned to Triple-A Columbus after the season was suspended. The 24-year old reliever has electric stuff, although walks were an issue during the now suspended Spring Training. Karinchak was going to be in Cleveland at one point or another this season, it just may be earlier than originally anticipated.

Logan Allen

Part of the Trevor Bauer trade, Logan Allen came over from San Diego with Franmil Reyes. Allen hit a speed bump in 2019 and is looking to bounce back to his previous form. Allen is listed as a starting pitcher, but Cleveland has a lot of starting pitching talent also waiting for their chance. Zach Plesac and Aaron Civale seem likely to get a chance to crack the rotation before Allen. There is also highly regarded prospect Triston McKenize who could make the leap sometime this season. Perhaps a spot in the bullpen could be an option if Allen is willing to adapt to a bullpen role.

Scott Moss

Scott Moss is another pitcher who is in a similar situation to Logan Allen. Moss is a starter, but will have to outperform several others to make the rotation. A role change could provide Moss with an opportunity to get to the big leagues faster. That being said, other options seem more likely at this point in time.

Jefry Rodriguez

Jefry Rodriguez is currently on the Active Roster, but a move to the bullpen could lead to a different pitcher down in Columbus joining the starting rotation. Perhaps Aaron Civale or Zach Plesac could make the move back up to Cleveland with Rodriguez moving to the pen.
