LeBron James, retirement, and leverage

Advertisements

The concept of retirement seemed a long way off for LeBron James not too long ago, but apparently that is no longer the case. James is reportedly unsure if he will be with the Lakers when the 2023-24 season begins according to reports.

Considering Lebron is 38 years old, this is something the Lakers need to take seriously. James has put a ton of miles on his body over the course of his illustrious career, but up until the Lakers elimination in the 2023 postseason has retirement even ben mentioned as an imminent possibility. There is something else that could be in play.

Leverage.

LeBron is no stranger to the leverage play, especially a public one. There have been many instances of James using leverage to get something that he desires, there is a reason people have referred to him as “LeGM”, as cringe as that is. The Lakers star has two more years on his current contract with the Lakers, including a player-option worth over $50 million for the 2024-25 season should he continue to play.

If James is going to continue his time in Los Angeles he is going to want to be competitive and have a legitimate chance at another championship. Having the retirement rumor come out upon elimination gives the Lakers more than enough time to formulate a plan, to LeBron’s liking of course, to take the next step they were unable to this year. It is just that well timed extra bit of incentive to be proactive in improving their roster and making it truly championship caliber.

Of course there is the reality that James is truly considering retirement and could call it a career. The official retirement of Carmelo Anthony just yesterday may have resonated with James and made him reflect upon his own career and future. If James does indeed retire he will go down as one of, if not the best to ever play the game.

Warriors defeat Celtics to win title

The Golden State Warriors are NBA Champions again as the defeated the Boston Celtics 103-90 in Game 6 to win their fourth title since the 2014-15 season. Steph Curry was able to win the very much elusive Finals MVP after Andre Iguodala and Kevin Durant (2x) had this honor previously. While the Celtics were not the best team the Warriors have faced during their run, they fall right in the middle, it gives Golden State a title that they can point to without the legitimacy being questioned.

The 2015 Finals saw Golden State defeat the injury riddled Cleveland Cavaliers who were down to LeBron James and a supporting cast reminiscent of the 2007 Finals squad which was swept by San Antonio. A healthy Cavs squad took down the 73-9 Warriors next year before they landed Durant in free agency. The addition of Durant put Golden State so far over the top that The Finals were not really a competition, but more of a formality ending with a Warriors win. The only time Golden State would lose during the Durant era was when they faced off with Toronto in 2019. Klay Thompson played in five of six games while Durant was limited to just one, getting injured in his only appearance in the series. This was the beginning of a transition period for Golden State.

It took two seasons for the Warriors to get back to The Finals and they took care of business. But this time there is nothing that can be questioned. Both teams were healthy. There was not a player on either team which propelled them to a clear over-the-top favorite. It was an even matchup with Golden State and Boston having legitimate chances to win. This was a legacy defining moment for the Warriors and Curry for that matter. Arguments and discussions can be had about the other three titles, but not this one and that is what matters. Golden State truly earned this title and Curry his Finals MVP.

Darius Garland ties LeBron James’ assist streak

Advertisements

There is no doubt that Darius Garland is a blossoming NBA star. Monday night was Garland’s fifth straight game with at least 10 assists, tying LeBron James for the longest streak over the last 10 years.

Over this span Darius Garland is averaging 13 assists per game with performances of 18, 12 (3x), and 11. Even when Garland is not able to contribute in the scoring department himself, he is still helping others score with his passing skills.

There is only one topic today, the Los Angeles Lakers winning the 2020 NBA Finals.

LeBron James won his fourth Finals MVP en route to this fourth title. LeBron was his usual dominant self as the Lakers were able to defeat the Miami Heat in six games. When will people stop doubting this man? It was old a long time ago and it is still old today.

There were many people criticizing LeBron for passing the ball to a wide open Danny Green instead of taking a contested shot and it was flat out wrong. Uninformed arguments were made saying that Michael Jordan would never do that, but I guess they forgot when he passed to John Paxson and Steve Kerr. All in the name of trying have some useless argument about who the GOAT is. Honestly, who the hell cares? LeBron’s great, Jordan’s great, they are two of the best to ever play the game. Appreciate them both.

One final thought here. The Los Angeles Lakers were a team of destiny, winning the 2020 NBA Finals is the perfect tribute to Kobe Bryant.

New Tune Squad jersey is absolutely terrible

The new Tune Squad jersey for the upcoming movie Space Jam A New Legacy was revealed and it is a complete disappointment.

If you had high expectations for SpaceJam A New Legacy it is now time to lower them just a bit. The new Tune Squad jersey was revealed and it is completely awful.

LeBron James modeled the jersey in a clip posted on the Uninterrupted twitter account.

Why are there graphics that are off center? What is this weird font? This design is a complete failure and an embarrassment to the original movie. The Ringer posted both versions of the jersey side by side, asking which jersey was better.

The answer is obvious, the classic white jersey worn by Michael Jordan in the original film wins by a mile.
