The Cleveland Basseball Club will send Aaron Civale to the mound as they look to split the series with the Kansas City Royals.

The Cleveland Baseball Club is looking to bounce back from their second straight loss to the Kansas City Royals on Thursday. Aaron Civale will be making his first ever start against Kansas City.

Aaron Civale is looking to build upon his last start in which he only allowed 2 runs on 5 hits and struck out 6 batters in a 4-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. Civale has a 3.63 ERA, 1.135 WHIP, and 8.5 K/09 in 52 innings this season. The Cleveland right hander will have to do his best to keep the Royals off the base paths.

The starter for Kansas City will be Brady Singer. Singer is making his second start against Cleveland, his first coming back on July 25th. Singer allowed 2 runs on 3 hits while walking 2 and striking out 7. There are two Cleveland batters who have hits off of Singer, Cesar Hernandez and Jose Ramirez. Francisco Lindor, Oscar Mercado, Roberto Perez, Franmil Reyes, and Carlos Santana are a combined 0-10 with 5 strikeouts against Singer.

Cleveland will need two things in order to win Thursday. Their offense to find their groove and Aaron Civale to pitch well. Only one of these (Civale) seems likely to happen since Cleveland’s offense has been inconsistent all season long.

Triston McKenzie starts for Cleveland Wednesday

Triston McKenzie will make his third start for the Cleveland Baseball Club as they look to win their second straight game in Kansas City.

The Cleveland Baseball Club is looking to win their series in Kansas City and they will send 23-year old right hander Triston McKenzie to the mound. McKenzie will be making his third start for Cleveland after being called up last month.

Through his first two starts Triston McKenzie has struck out 13 batters in 10 innings leading to a 2.70 ERA and 0.900 WHIP. McKenzie has been as good as advertised and a continuation of his success is not out of the question. Although McKenzie will have to be careful against a Royals team which can present problems for even the best of pitchers.

The Royals will start Jakob Junis and Cleveland has been successful against him in the past. Francisco Lindor is an impressive 16-32 with 4 home runs, 3 doubles, and 1 triple against Junis. Carlos Santana is also hitting .500 against Junis, going 7-14. with a double. Tyler Naquin has gone 7-17 with a home run while driving in 5 runs. Jose Ramirez has 8 hits in 29 at-bats including 2 doubles and a homer.

It is worth mentioning that there are Cleveland batters who have not been successful against Jakob Junis. Oscar Mercado is 2-15 with 4 strikeouts. Roberto Perez does have a double, but is 1-9 otherwise and has struck out 3 times. Cesar Hernandez has only faced Junis twice but is hitless in both at-bats.

Wednesday’s game is scheduled to start at 8:05 P.M.

5 hits from Franmil Reyes leads Cleveland offense

Advertisements

Franmil Reyes lead the Cleveland Baseball Club offense with a 5 hit performance in their 10-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals.

One area that has been concerning all season long for the Cleveland Baseball Club has been a lack of offense. The Cleveland offense came to life Tuesday night in Kansas City and was lead by Franmil Reyes. Reyes went 5-5 with 2 doubles and a home run.

The bomb from Reyes came right after Francisco Lindor gave Cleveland an early 2-0 lead with a two-run homer. A two-run shot from Roberto Perez would make it 5-0 and would chase Royals starter Matt Harvey from the game. Perez would drive in another run later in the game with a double.

Jose Ramirez drove in two runs with a single in the 6th and a solo homer in the 8th.

Newly acquired Josh Naylor went 2-5 and drove in a run in the 7th inning. Naylor hitting in his first start is a welcome sight for an offensively challenged outfield. If Naylor can build on this performance it would go a long way for this offense moving forward.

Cleveland totaled 17 hits in all which is 11 more than the previous night which resulted in a 2-1 loss.

The return of Zach Plesac

Zach Plesac made his return to Cleveland’s rotation and pitched well. Plesac would allow 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 6 in 6 innings. The only run allowed by Plesac was a solo home run from Hunter Dozier.

Dominic Leone would pitch the 7th and only allow 1 hit.

Cal Quantrill made his Cleveland debut, pitching 2 innings and allowing 2 hits with 2 strikeouts.

Cleveland can get a much needed series win in Kansas City Wednesday at 8:05 P.M.

Cleveland wins second straight vs. Twins 6-3

Advertisements

The Cleveland Baseball Club defeated the Minnesota Twins in the game of their three game series by a score of 6-3.

Mike Clevinger made his return to the mound for the Cleveland Baseball Club and was a bit shaky. Clevinger was very hittable all game long, including giving up a leadoff homer to Max Kepler. Eventually the Cleveland starter would settle in (sort of) and manage to last 6 innings. Clevinger gave up 2 runs on 8 hits and 1 walk while striking out 6 in his first game back from banishment.

The team got a bit of a boost early with a three-run homer from Jose Ramirez.

This was the only hit of the game for Ramirez but it seemed to bring the team back to life after trailing by two runs early in the game.

With the game tied in the 8th inning Cleveland got a boost from the resurgent Tyler Naquin. With Carlos Santana and Franmil Reyes on base, Naquin would drive a Sergio Romo changeup into left field which would allow both runners to score.

Later in the inning Cesar Hernandez would step up to the plate and drive home Tyler Naquin with an RBI single off of Danny Coulombe.

Brad Hand would come on in the 9th to close the game out and earn the save. This was Hand’s 9th save of the season and fourth straight appearance without allowing a baserunner.

Cleveland is now half a game back of the Twins in the American League Central. The team has an off day Thursday before heading to St. Louis to take on the Cardinals.

Cleveland looks to start new win streak vs Detroit

The Cleveland Baseball Club is looking to start a new winning streak against the Detroit Tigers after a disappointing 10-5 loss Friday.

Triston McKenzie will take the mound for the Cleveland Baseball Club as they look to rebound from their win streak snapping loss Friday. McKenzie will be making his long awaited MLB debut and he will square off against Matthew Boyd.

Matthew Boyd has not had a good start to this season. Boyd has allowed 25 runs in 23.1 innings this season, including 8 home runs. This has led to a subpar 9.64 ERA and 1.886 WHIP. The once promising Tigers pitcher has been quite the disappointment this season. Perhaps facing Matthew Boyd could help jumpstart their anemic offense.

Cleveland shortstop Francisco Lindor has quite the track record against Boyd. Lindor is 9-27 with 2 doubles and 2 home runs, this matchup could be exactly what he needs to get back into the groove. Over his last 10 games Lindor is slashing .233/.313/.349 with a .661 OPS. 3 of Lindor’s 10 hits over this span have been for extra-bases (2 doubles, 1 home run). The problem is that more is expected out of someone the caliber of Lindor.

Another player in need of a turnaround at the plate is Jose Ramirez. Ramirez has struggled during the month of August with a .153/.253/.347/.600 slash line. The only bright side is 7 of his 11 hits were of the extra-base variety (3 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs). Ramirez is 7-27 (1 triple, 2 home runs) in his career against Boyd and this could be the springboard to producing at the plate at the level Cleveland needs.

Jordan Luplow is another player who has found success against Matthew Boyd. Luplow is known for crushing left-handers and Boyd is no exception with 2 home runs in 9 at-bats.

The game is scheduled to start at 7:10 P.M.

Franmil Reyes got things started in the 2nd inning with his first of two home runs in the game.

Reyes would later be hit on the hand by a pitch from Joe Jimenez and had to exit the game. Reyes’ x-rays were negative according to reports.

Adam Plutko was Cleveland’s starter and he did not have a good outing. Plutko lasted just 2.2 innings and allowed 3 runs on 6 hits. To be blunt, Plutko just didn’t have it and he wasn’t fooling any of Detroit’s hitters.

Dominic Leone allowed 1 run on 2 hits and did not record and out. Oliver Perez came away with the win, his first of the season. Perez worked just one inning and allowed one hit. Nick Wittgren would pitch the 9th and allowed 1 run on 2 hits. Wittgren would need 19 pitches to complete the final inning.

This was the 20th consecutive win for Cleveland over Detroit, the longest winning streak over one opponent in team history.

It has been over a year since Cleveland lost to Detroit, that time being on April 10, 2019. Cleveland will have a chance to extend their streak this upcoming weekend when the Tigers come to Cleveland for a three game set.

Cleveland will face the Pirates in Pittsburgh beginning Tuesday at 7:05 P.M.

Cleveland defeats White Sox 5-4 in extras

The Cleveland Baseball Club defeated the Chicago White Sox 5-4 in extras thanks to a clutch squeeze bunt from Delino DeShields.

Cleveland desperately needed to pull off a win against Chicago Sunday night.

Shane Bieber got the start for Cleveland and allowed 3 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 8. Bieber allowed 2 solo home runs (Jose Abreu, James McCann). A Yasmani Grandal double in the 6th would be the last run of the game that Bieber allowed.

Cleveland’s offense struggled for the most part, only managing 7 hits, but the team kept up their impressive walk rate with 6 more to add to their total.

Cesar Hernandez drove in Cleveland’s first run with an RBI double in the 3rd inning. Jose Ramirez temporarily gave Cleveland a 2-1 lead with on a single that drove in Sandy Leon. Cleveland would not score again until the 8th when Franmil Reyes drove a ball to the left center field gap which scored Ramirez.

After 9 innings the game was all square and that is when things got interesting.

With 1 out in the inning with Jose Ramirez on third and Carlos Santana on first Delino DeShields came up to bat. DeShields laid down a perfect bunt for a squeeze play that would score Ramirez giving Cleveland a 4-3 lead.

With two outs Mike Freeman would drive in Santana to make it 5-3 Cleveland.

Brad Hand would come on for the save and things got a bit dicey. A run came around to score on a James McCann single and Hand would proceed to walk Danny Mendick. A downpour ensued and Hand was barely able to grip the ball, eventually leading to a rain delay.

Approximately 45 minutes later the game resumed and Oliver Perez came on for the save. Perez was able to get the final two outs of the game on six pitches and notched his 5th career save securing a 5-4 win for Cleveland.

Cleveland has an off day Monday and will resume play at home Tuesday when they will face the Chicago Cubs.

Cleveland looks to take rubber match in Chicago

The Cleveland Baseball Club will face the Chicago White Sox Sunday night as they attempt to win their second consecutive game.

Cleveland and Chicago have split the first two games of the series with Cleveland taking Saturday’s game. Each team will be looking to win the rubber match that will take place Sunday night.

Shane Bieber will take the mound for Cleveland as they look to win the final game of their series with the White Sox Sunday night. Bieber has been absolutely dominant this year with a 0.83 ERA and 0.692 WHIP in 21.2 innings. The third-year starter has struck out 35 batters (14.5 K/9), third-most all-time through the first three starts of a season, trailing only Nolan Ryan (37) and Gerrit Cole (36).

Chicago will start Lucas Giolito and he has given Cleveland a ton of trouble. Giolito did not allow a run in his last start against Cleveland, scattering 4 hits and 2 walks across 6 innings. Chicago would go on to win when Brad Hand imploded in a non-save situation.

Only Francisco Lindor and and Jose Ramirez have had any sort of success against Giolito. Lindor is 5-14 and Ramirez is 4-14 with 1 double and 1 home run. Cesar Hernandez (1-2) and Carlos Santana (1-9) are the only other Cleveland batters with hits. The rest of the roster is 0-21 combined against Gioltio, not exactly encouraging. Although it is worth mentioning that Delino DeShields (0-3) and Domingo Santana (0-5) are the only players with more than two at-bats in this group. Mike Freeman, Sandy Leon, Franmil Reyes, Beau Taylor, and Bradley Zimmer all have two at-bats or less.

The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 P.M. on ESPN

Cleveland will look to build upon their previous success against the White Sox and run their win streak to four games.

Aaron Civale gets the start for Cleveland in Game 1. Civale started Game 1 of their last series and was excellent, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits in 6 innings while striking out 9. Civale will look for a repeat performance against Chicago Friday.
