Jimmy Garoppolo to sign with Las Vegas

The Las Vegas Raiders are signing the former San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots quarterback.

Jimmy Garoppolo has a new home, Las Vegas. Garoppolo will be signing with the Raiders once free agency officially begins with the two sides agreeing to terms on the first day of the legal tampering period.

It is a three-year deal for Garoppolo worth just over $67 million, 34 of which is guaranteed. The deal will be official Wednesday when the new league year begins.

This was a very predictable series of events as the obvious connection between Jimmy Garoppolo and Raiders coach Josh McDaniels could not be ignored. For McDaniels it gives him a quarterback who can come right in and operate, even winning right away. The latter is crucial for McDaniels in year two as his head coaching return has received plenty of criticism. Garoppolo gets a multi-year deal with an offense that features plenty of weapons, setting himself up for success. Additionally Garoppolo can help garner support for McDaniels in the locker room for what is a crucial juncture for the future of the Raiders.

Looking ahead this still gives Las Vegas the flexibility to draft a quarterback without having to start him right away. The Raiders can now take a chance on a quarterback in the draft who may need some refinement. If that is the path they decide to take they have properly executed step one of this process.

NFL Week 4 thoughts and observations

Thoughts and observations from NFL Week 4

1. San Francisco 49ers miss Jimmy Garoppolo

First things first, I do not think much of Jimmy Garoppolo. That being said he is significantly better than San Francisco’s other options (Nick Mullens, CJ Beathard). The 49ers are a better team with Garoppolo compared to without him. While Jimmy G may never be a Top 5 quarterback, he at least plays at a level that is not detrimental to the team.

2. Nick Foles unable to continue magic in Week 4

Nick Foles was not able to rally the Bears to a second straight victory as they lost to the Colts by a score of 19-11. Chicago had to punt 7 times and it is not easy to win when the punt unit comes out that often. Big Dick Nick didn’t build off of last week but the fact of the matter is that he played better than Mitchell Trubisky would have.

3. Bill O’Brien stinks

As long as Houston continues to employ Bill O’Brien they will be doomed. Nothing more needs to be said.

4. Monday Night doubleheader should be fun

This is less of an observation and more of projecting a thought onto tonight. There are two games on Monday night and they should be fun. The Patriots and Chiefs should be an entertaining matchup, but the absence of Cam Newton will take a bit of the star power out of the game. Falcons and Packers may not be competitive, however Aaron Rodgers should have a field day against the joke that is the Atlanta Falcons defense. Rodgers airing it out is always entertaining, sit back and enjoy the show.

Keys for the Browns in Week 5

The Cleveland Browns head to San Francisco to take on the 49ers on Monday Night Football. This will be another tough test for the Browns. San Francisco is still undefeated and has some momentum coming into this matchup. Cleveland will need to excel in a few areas in order to crack the .500 mark for the first time since 2014.

Pressure Jimmy G

Jimmy Garoppolo has not been terrible this season. Up to this point in San Francisco he has been inconsistent in regards to his play on the field. Garoppolo has only been sacked twice so far this season and has thrown five touchdowns compared to four interceptions. Pressure Garoppolo and he should struggle to find a rhythm and complete passes on a regular basis.

Attempt to take away George Kittle

George Kittle is easily San Francisco’s best pass catcher. Kittle is Garoppolo’s go-to target in the passing game. The Browns defense must do their best to attempt to take away Kittle. If they succeed Garoppolo will have to go to find another person to throw to. The extra time it takes to scan the defense and find someone else should allow the Browns pass rush to get home and at least hit Garoppolo.

Contain the running game

We all know what the Kyle Shanahan offense is. A zone blocking scheme that will allow pretty much any running back to shine. Right now that running back is Matt Breida. It will be important to not over pursue on outside running plays. These plays frequently cut back inside and can lead to big gains, much like Nick Chubb’s 88-yard touchdown against Baltimore last week. That play was taken straight out of Kyle Shanahan’s playbook. The fact that Cleveland ran that exact play may help the Browns in preparing to face San Francisco. It is also worth mentioning that Browns defensive coordinator Steve Wilks faced Shanahan twice last season while he was the coach of the Arizona Cardinals. This may help just a bit in the containing the running game department.

Continue offensive game plan from last week

The Browns played up to expectations last week. Quick passes and a productive running game. Gone are the long developing pass plays that required the offensive line to block for more than 2.5 seconds.  Baker Mayfield got the ball out quickly and the Ravens defense was on their heels all game long. Building off of the game plan from last week will certainly help the Browns this week and as the season continues.
