The Cleveland Monsters were able to weather a 3rd period rally from the Syracuse Crunch coming away with a 5-4 overtime win.

Just one day after losing to the Syracuse Crunch 6-4, the Cleveland Monsters appeared to be headed for their second straight loss. This was due to a 3rd period rally, more like an early assault on the Cleveland goal. Syracuse scored two goals in the first three minutes to tie the game at 3 before taking the lead just a few minutes later. With just over a minute left in regulation, it was a Carson Meyer goal to tie the game to send it to overtime. In overtime it was the highly regarded Liam Foudy, doing his best Mighty Mouse impression, who saved the day just 1:59 into the extra period.

The Monsters only had one power play chance in the game and they were unable to convert it. Unlike the previous game, Cleveland was able to score a shorthanded goal, the game-tying goal from Meyer. This was the second straight contest which Cleveland attempted 26 shots on goal, this time resulting in a win.

Game notes

Jean-Francois Berube made his season debut, saving 27 of 31 shots on goal. Berube last appeared in a Monsters uniform during the 2018-19 season.

In addition to his game-tying goal in the 3rd period, Carson Meyer scored in the 1st period as well. Other Monsters who scored in the contest include Justin Scott and Yegor Chinakhov. This was Chinakhov’s AHL debut after being assigned to the club one day prior.

Tyler Angle and Gavin Beyreuther were tied for the team lead in assists with two. Other Monsters credited with assists include Meyer, Scott, Gabriel Carlsson, and Jake Christiansen.

Cleveland’s next game will be on the road as they travel to Belleville to take on the Senators in back-to-back contests starting Friday, October 22.

Monsters drop season opener to Crunch 6-4

The Cleveland Monsters were unable to come away with a win in the season opener, falling to the Syracuse Crunch 6-4.

The 2021-22 AHL season kicked off Friday with the Cleveland Monsters playing host to the Syracuse Crunch, hoping to send the home crowd home happy with a win. Unfortunately Syracuse had other ideas as Cleveland was simply not able to keep up with the scoring of the Crunch.

Things started off great in the 1st period, the Monsters took an early 2-0 lead before the midway point. The lead was short-lived however as Syracuse tied things up later in the period Syracuse would add another goal early in the 2nd to take the lead just 2:55 into the 2nd with the Monsters answering just minutes later.

The Crunch were able to go on a second three-goal unanswered spree after Cleveland tied the game in the 2nd. At that point it was just too much for Cleveland to keep up as they were only able to add one more goal before the end of the game.

This game was not about shots on goal as both teams finished with a similar total (SYR 22 – CLE 26). It was about execution in the special teams department. The Monsters converted just one of eight power play opportunities while Syracuse scored once on the power play and also added a shorthanded goal. If a team is unable to convert on their own power play chances while giving up shorthanded goals it will be quite difficult to come away victorious.

Game notes

Daniil Tarasov started in goal for the Monsters, saving 16 of 21 shots on goal. One of Syracuse’s six goals came with an empty net.

Cleveland’s goal scorers were Tim Berni, Jake Christiansen, Adam Helewka, and Justin Scott. Assisting on those goals for the Monsters were Helewka, Christiansen, Tyler Angle, Justin Danforth, Josh Dunne, Tristan Mullin, and Gabriel Carlsson.

Game 2 between Cleveland and Syracuse will take place Saturday at 7:00 P.M. with the Monsters looking for their first win of the season.

Well, the Cleveland Monsters are going to look a bit different for Saturday’s game with Rochester. Gabriel Carlsson has been recalled by the Columbus Blue Jackets after being assigned to Cleveland Friday.

Gabriel Carlsson appeared in the Monsters loss to Syracuse on Friday. If Carlsson does appear in a game with Columbus it will be his first NHL action since early-January.

VanWormer appeared in eight games overall and registered one point off an assist. This point came during his longest stint with one team (four games with Milwaukee).
