Evan Mobley set to return Saturday

The dynamic rookie should return to the lineup Saturday when the Cavs take on the Orlando Magic.

A key piece is expected to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers this Saturday, Evan Mobley.

Evan Mobley has missed the last four games and Cleveland has lost all four. Granted they were against vastly superior opponents (Brooklyn twice, Golden State, and Phoenix), his presence could have made a difference in those contests.

Evan Mobley is currently averaging 14.6 points and eight rebounds in 33.7 minutes across 15 games. Having this type of production return to the lineup will go a long way for the Cavs as their rebuild continues to progress.

Cavaliers to be shorthanded again vs Warriors

The Cleveland Cavaliers will be without some key players when they take on the Golden State Warriors at home Thursday.

Wednesday night saw a shorthanded Cleveland Cavaliers squad fall to the Brooklyn Nets at Barclays Center. Now the Cavs return home to face the Golden State Warriors and again they will be down a few players.

Jarrett Allen, Lauri Markkanen, Evan Mobley, and Collin Sexton will again not be in the starting lineup for Cleveland. Lamar Stevens will also miss Thursday’s contest against Golden State.

Even at full strength the Cavaliers would have a tough time against a resurgent Warriors squad. Now that they are missing several important players it will only make things that much more difficult to be competitive, much less win.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 P.M. at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

Injuries piling up for the Cavaliers

Advertisements

Even though the Cleveland Cavaliers are exceeding expectations early on in the year, a growing injury list could derail their success.

At 9-6 the Cleveland Cavaliers have far exceed anyone’s realistic expectations for this team. A team that has struggled to find an identity over the past few seasons combined with a roster that does not appear to be constructed properly has outperformed the wildest dreams of even the most optimistic fan thus far. Unfortunately the Cavs are seeing more players end up on the injury report and that could result in a change in fortune.

The Cavaliers will be without Evan Mobley, Collin Sexton, Lauri Markkanen, Lamar Stevens, and Jarrett Allen Wednesday night in Brooklyn. Kevin Love is provable to return, but that is not guaranteed.

The biggest loss for the Cavs is obviously Mobley. Mobley is the clear Rookie of the Year frontrunner and losing such a dynamic unique player is huge, even without missing everyone else.

Cleveland has mostly won this season due to a sum of their parts and not necessarily one player in particular. As more players are removed from the equation in addition to a schedule which has them facing Brooklyn twice, Golden State, and Phoenix in the next seven days, things could change really quick for the Cavaliers if players do not start returning sooner rather than later.

Cavaliers fall short against Wizards

The Cleveland Cavaliers had a chance to defeat the Washington Wizards, but were not able to come away with a win.

Done one with just over four seconds left in the game, Darius Garland attempted what would have been a game-winning three-point attempt. Unfortunately the shot did not go and the Cleveland Cavaliers found themselves on the losing end of a 97-94 final score.

Despite  at one point leading by 10 points in the game, it was the fact that the Cavs were outscored by nine in the 4th quarter that made a difference. In close games teams cannot afford to be outscored late and that is what has happened to the Cavaliers. The fact of the matter is that Cleveland is still a young inexperienced team that is is learning how to win. Sure, the 7-4 record coming into the game, (now 7-5), has outperformed expectations, but everyone is mostly sure of where they will end up when the season is over. It is still a developmental year for this team and flipping the outcome is something they should learn how to do as the season progresses.

Game notes

Even though he was not able to make the final shot, Darius Garland was an impactful player in the game. Garland scored 19 points on 8-16 shooting (3-10 3PT) and also had four assists. If the Cavaliers are going to continue being completive they will need more outings like this from their best starting guard.

It was another impressive outing from Evan Mobley. The Cavaliers rookie finished with 19 point and seven rebounds in addition to two assists and one block. Cleveland’s combination of Garland and Mobley will be exciting to watch as the season continues.

Another game, another double-double for Jarrett Allen. Allen’s 13 points and 10 rebounds made it the fifth straight for the Cavs big man. This was the first game during this stretch which Cleveland did not come out the winner.

Ricky Rubio continues to be a key force off the bench for the Cavs. Rubio finished with a team0high 20 points and five assists. The veteran point guard has proven that he is a key piece for their team off the bench and is capable of making a tremendous impact in every game.

The Cavaliers will regroup Wednesday before returning to action Friday as they host the Detroit Pistons.

Cavaliers come away with narrow win in Toronto

A couple of late free throws were enough to give the Cleveland Cavaliers the win over the Toronto Raptors.

Down five points with 1:43 left in the game, the Cleveland Cavaliers were staring a loss right in the face. A couple of shots from Jarrett Allen brought the Cavs within one. With 4.8 seconds remaining the game Darius Garland was fouled by OG Anunoby, sending him to the line with the opportunity to take the lead. Garland made both free throws  giving Cleveland the lead and the Cavs were able to hold on for 102-101 victory.

While the clutch free throws from Garland get the shine, the fact of the matter is that he was spectacular all game. Garland finished with  21 points and eight assists, leading the Cavaliers in both categories. Evan Mobley continued his impressive rookie season, scoring 18 points on 7-14 from the field and making all four free throws. Jarrett Allen also made significant contributions with 16 points and 15 rebounds, his third straight double-double and fifth of the season.

For the fourth straight game Cedi Osman was productive contributor for the Cavaliers with 17 points on 5-10 from three-point range. Osman has made 19 of his last 34 attempts from deep, 20% higher than his career average (55.8%-35.4%), while impressive a correction is coming in this area sooner than later.

The Cavaliers are 6-4 on the year and will travel to New York to take on the Knicks Sunday at 6:00 P.M. after an off day Saturday.

Lakers too much for Cavaliers in 113-101 loss

The Cleveland Cavaliers managed to keep things close with the Los Angeles Lakers, but were outscored 25-16 in the 4th quarter.

For the majority of the game the Cleveland Cavaliers were competitive with the Los Angeles Lakers. At one point the Cavs even held an 11-point in the 2nd quarter. But as all we know there are two constants in the NBA, the Cavaliers are not good in the second half and do not count a team has LeBron James on their roster.

The Cavs were outscored by nine points in the 4th quarter and by 12 in the second half overall after both teams entered the half tied at 54. Overall this game was a much more accurate portrayal of where the team stands in regards to real contenders than some of their earlier games this season.

Evan Mobley led the Cavaliers scoring effort with 23 points, making 10 of 16 field goals including one of two three-pointers, and went 2-5 from the line. Additionally, Mobley had six rebounds three assists, and two steals in the contest.

While it was not a prolific shooting night for Darius Garland (6-14), he did manage to end up with 18 points in addition to his game-high 11 assists. On the other hand, Garland’s backcourt partner Collin Sexton was essentially a non-factor. Sexton finished with nine points on 2-9 from the field while also having three assists, three rebounds, two steals while turning the ball over three times.

Lauri Markkanen came through with a surprising 17-point performance, with most of his damage coming from deep (3-8 3PT). Markkanen is still struggling from three his season, making just 26.3 %, about 10% lower than his career average.

While it also seems inevitable that Ricky Rubio gets moved at the deadline, for the time being he has proven to be a valuable option off the bench. Rubio was able to finish with 18 points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals in 32 minutes.

The Cavaliers travel to Phoenix to take on the Suns in the second game of a back-to-back, looking to get back in the win column against a very formidable opponent.

Cavaliers defeat Clippers 92-79

The Cleveland Cavaliers managed to come away with a 92-79 win over the shorthanded Los Angeles Clippers.

On the surface the Cleveland Cavaliers 92-79 victory against the Los Angeles Clippers is a bit of surprise. Upon realizing that the Clippers played without Kawhi Leonard, Serge Ibaka, and Marcus Morris it becomes quite less of a shock. The Cavs took advantage of Los Angeles being without three key players and handed them their third loss of the season.

Leading the way for the Cavaliers was Collin Sexton with 26 points, seven rebounds, three steals, and one assist. Sexton made 12 of 16 field goal attempts from two-point range while missing all four three-point attempts. Not everything about his performance was dynamic as he finished with a season high five turnovers.

Darius Garland was Cleveland’s assist leader with six and second-leading scorer, finishing with 16 points on 5-8 from the floor (2-3 3PT) and making all four free throw attempts. Garland also finished with a season high in turnovers with six.

Evan Mobley struggled from the field, going just 3-10. Mobley did make all six free throws as he finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, the second of his young career.

Ricky Rubio continues to do Ricky Rubio things. Rubio finished with 15 points and three assists in 28 minutes off the bench.

The Cavaliers have now won three straight games and will remain in Los Angeles to face the other tenant in Staples Center, the Lakers, Friday at 10:30 P.M.

Cavaliers cruise by Hawks 101-95

The Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Atlanta Hawks 101-95 as they managed to get their first win of the 2021-22 season.

Unlike the night before, the second half was not the enemy of the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs outscored the Atlanta Hawks 49-40 en route to their first win of the year.

It was not a particularly stellar shooting night from either team with Atlanta making 38.4% of their shots and Cleveland 41.6%. In comparison to team averages so far this season, they would rank in the bottom third of the NBA in field goal percentage for this contest. The attempts from three-point range were not any better as Atlanta was 29.4% (10-34) while the Cavaliers made just seven of 28 (25%).

Even with the shooting struggles it was the performance of an unlikely hero which saved the day, Ricky Rubio. Rubio finished with 23 points, eight assists, six rebounds, and one steal while going 9-15 from the field, 3-7 from deep, and making both free throw attempts. The main reason the Cavaliers came out victorious Saturday night was Rubio.

The trio known as “Tower City” had themselves a night for the Cavaliers. Led by rookie Evan Mobley and his 17-point, 11-rebound, four-block performance, Jarrett Allen (11 points, 14 rebounds) and Lauri Markkanen (12 points, eight rebounds) also helped pave the way for a Cleveland victory.

Coming off the bench, Kevin Love had his best performance in his new role. Love finished with 12 points, six rebounds, and three assists in 24 minutes.

The Cavaliers head out for a five-game road trip beginning Monday in Denver against the Nuggets.

Cavaliers lose to Grizzlies in season opener 132-121

Advertisements

The Cleveland Cavaliers traveled to Memphis to take on the Grizzlies for their season opener, but were unable to come away with a win.

Going into Memphis and winning the season opener against the Grizzlies was always going to be a tall task for the Cleveland Cavaliers. The task was too tall as the Cavs were on the wrong side of a 132-121 final score.

Cleveland was actually able to exit the 1st quarter with the game tied at 32, after that there were issues. Memphis outscored Cleveland 41-29 in the 2nd quarter, more than enough to carry the Grizzlies to an easy victory. While the Cavaliers did outscore Memphis 60-59 in the second half, it was the 2nd quarter that did them in.

The Cavaliers managed to have an edge in assists (38-28), mostly coming form Darius Garland (12) and Ricky Rubio (10). Garland and Rubio also managed to contribute in the scoring department with 13 and 12 respectively.

In his first game since signing his extension in the offseason, Jarrett Allen was a perfect 11-11 from the field, scoring 25 points. Allen also had four rebounds, three blocks, three steals, and one assist, solidifying his performance as the best for the Cavs on the night.

Rookie Evan Mobley had quite the debut, scoring 17 points and grabbing nine rebounds, tied with Lauri Markkanen for a team-high. Speaking of Markkanen, his Cavaliers debut was not as nice. Markkanen struggled from the field making just four of his 14 field goal attempts including going 2-7 from deep.

It was a surprising shooting night for Cedi Osman, making all three shots from downtown while going 5-6 overall. Osman scored 15 points, the highest total of any Cleveland bench player.

The Cavaliers will take on the Charlotte Hornets for their home opener Friday at 7:00 P.M.

Cavaliers lose 102-101 to Chicago Bulls

Advertisements

The Cleveland Cavaliers faced off with the Chicago Bulls for the second time this preseason and lost by a score of 102-101.

It was less than a week ago that the Cleveland Cavaliers were destroyed by the Chicago Bulls in a 36-point loss. While this game was much closer, it was still a loss for the Cavs as the Bulls scored four points in the final 1:20 to hand Cleveland the loss.

This time out the Cavaliers were without both Collin Sexton and Darius Garland, thrusting Ricky Rubio and Lauri Markkanen into the starting lineup. Markkanen scored a team-high 18 points on 8-14 from the field while Rubio added nine points of his own in addition to a game-high nine assists.

The Cavs also got an impressive effort from rookie Evan Mobley, scoring 15 points on 7-13 shooting along with ten rebounds, four assists, three blocks, and two steals. Cleveland’s other big man, Jarrett Allen, scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds in 26 minutes.

Cedi Osman was the Cavs leading bench scorer with 11 points on 5 of 8 from the field. Dylan Windler’s nine points was the second-highest reserve scoring total in the contest.

This was the first game that the Cavaliers did not turn the ball over 20 or more times, so there is progress in that area. Cleveland also led in the assists department 32-18, again progress. The regular season is around the corner and even though there are players to be excited about, it is going to be a long season for the Cavaliers.

The Cavs will take on the Indiana Pacers Friday for their final preseason game.
