In addition to Adarius Taylor, the Cleveland Browns have terminated the contracts of T.J. Carrie, Demetrius Harris, and Eric Kush.

More roster moves from the Cleveland Browns. Andrew Berry and Co. are hard at work art identifying just who they want and who is expendable. Cleveland will be releasing T.J. Carrie, Demetrius Harris, and Eric Kush.

The news of the team moving on from Adarius Taylor leaked earlier in the day. Cleveland saved quite a bit money of with these moves today.

The base salary for cornerback T.J. Carrie would have had him making $14 million over the next two seasons. Money was clearly a motivator here. Carrie appeared in 32 games for the Browns over seasons, intercepting two passes, forcing three fumbles, and recording two sacks.

Eric Kush being released was not necessarily tied to money. Kush’s base salary would have been $1.8 million in 2020. Any future with the team essentially went out the window when the Browns acquired Wyatt Teller from Buffalo prior to the season. Kush appeared in all 16 games for Cleveland this season, starting seven of them.

Demetrius Harris did not do a whole heck of a lot during his one year in Cleveland. Harris caught 15 passes for 149 yards and 3 touchdowns in 15 games. It is worth nothing that Harris is not a receiving threat by any means, these numbers are in the ballpark of his previous three seasons. Add in the fact that he was due to make quite a bit of money for relatively uninspiring numbers and he was as good as gone once Andrew Berry took over.

Browns Players to Watch: Week 1 vs Titans

The first week of every NFL Season is always high stress. Let’s take a look at five key players for the Cleveland Browns.

  • Baker Mayfield
    • The 2nd year quarterback has a lot of pressure on him, and he’s hoping to avoid the “sophomore slump”. Above all the key to his success is doing what he does best, buying time with his mobility. Considering the Browns shuffled the offensive line this may be counted on more this season than last.
  • Eric Kush
    • The projected starter at the right guard position will have many question marks for a position previously held by Kevin Zeitler, Zeitler was traded to the Giants this past offseason. Kush will need to pull his weight keep Baker upright.
  • Jarvis Landry
    • Everyone is talking about how explosive the Baker+OBJ connection is going to be. Meanwhile they forget that Jarvis Landry is going to be going up a lesser defensive back. Landry will certainly have plenty of chances to prove himself.
  • David Njoku
    • The talented pass catcher had struggles blocking last season. With the new and improved offense, David Njoku is expected to make a leap in his blocking ability in addition to improving his receiving numbers.
  • Denzel Ward
    • The 2nd year corner had tackling concerns last season. Resulting with Denzel Ward suffering concussions in his rookie campaign. We can expect him to make a jump under new defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.

Browns bolster their offensive line

The Cleveland Browns have signed former Chicago Bears lineman Eric Kush and Bryan Witzmann.

There was a feeling that the Browns were going to make some moves in regards to their offensive line. Austin Corbett is now a starter after Kevin Zeitler was dealt to New York. The Browns needed to find someone to occupy the previously vacant backup guard role.

Eric Kush and Bryan Witzmann were both members of the Chicago Bears last season. Now they will make their home in Cleveland. Kush and Witzmann split time in Chicago taking the place of an injured Kyle Long. While the task of replacing Zeitler is not easy, finding quality backups will certainly help. Kush actually had a better pass blocking efficiency than both Zeitler and Joel Bitonio per Pro Football Focus.

The fact that both Chicago and Cleveland appear on this list is encouraging. The Browns clearly had one of the better offensive lines as last season progressed and adding players from a productive Bears line will also help. Granted it is a group effort, but every little bit helps. The Browns guards will have their hands full in helping out their offensive tackles next season.

The group the Browns featured at tackle last season were far from good. Greg Robinson relieved an underperforming Desmond Harrison at midseason and performed much better. However he was not exactly good by any means. Chris Hubbard also struggled in pass protection. With Cleveland’s tackles ranking so low, it is apparent that they have some of the worst performers in the league when it comes to pass blocking efficiency.

Cleveland needs to ensure they do everything they can to protect Baker Mayfield. Bringing aboard quality depth pieces like Eric Kush and Bryan Witzmann will certainly help. With the addition of Odell Beckham Jr. the Browns expect to be fairly pass heavy, adding quality pass protection will just make the offense just that more dangerous.
