Guardians catch stray from rival manager

Advertisements

The Cleveland Guardians were omitted from a list of teams in the division trying to get better by Detroit Tigers manager AJ Hinch. Appearing on 97.1 The Ticket in Detroit Monday, Hinch specifically mentioned the Tigers, Twins, White Sox, and Royals, the Guardians being absent from that list.

This is not the first time that Cleveland has been mentioned as a team not trying. Dallas Keuchel and Joc Pederson were both critical of the Guardians not long ago. Now with the rumors of contract extension talks with Jose Ramirez deteriorating, it is not helping their cause. This series of events is very reminiscent of what happened with Cleveland and Francisco Lindor a few years prior. If they are unable to extend another prominent player and end up trading him expect more criticism to come from all directions.

Triston McKenzie spectacular vs Tigers

Advertisements

The Cleveland Baseball Club pitcher dominated the Detroit Tigers as he struck out 11 batters in 8 innings with 7.2 of them perfect.

Absolutely dominant, that is the way to describe the performance from Triston McKenzie Sunday afternoon. McKenzie faced the Detroit Tigers on the road and all eyes were on someone else who happened to be in the other dugout, Miguel Cabrera. The fans who swarmed Comerica Park were expecting to see a historical moment from one of the best sluggers in the game, his 500th career home run. While Miggy still is waiting to achieve that notable feat, the fans in attendance nearly saw a different historical moment, a perfect game.

Triston McKenzie was mowing down batter after batter in Detroit. There was not a batter in the Tigers lineup who could touch anything that McKenzie hurled over the plate. McKenzie displayed a level of confidence that is usually seen from players who are 5-10 years his senior. There was one distinguishable difference from McKenzie in this outing when compared to his earlier appearances, his command. 73 of his 106 pitches went for strikes, a stark contrast to when he was walking just about anyone who stepped into the batter’s box.

Perhaps a factor that played into Triston McKenzie’s confidence was the fact he did not have to seriously worry about the final outcome of the contest. Cleveland had tallied 11 runs by the 3rd inning, essentially securing a victory early in the game. Not having to worry about whether the team would win or lose could have played into just how spectacular his performance was Sunday afternoon.

While the outing was incredible, it was not perfect. Triston McKenzie allowed his first baserunner, a single into right field off the bat of Harold Castro, in the bottom of the 8th. McKenzie would finish the game with a career-high 11 strikeouts in a career-high 8 innings pitched. Almost perfect will be how this game will be remembered as Cleveland still waits for their next no-hitter or perfect game, the longest active drought in baseball (40 years).

Cleveland dominates Detroit in 13-5 win

The Cleveland Baseball Club completely dominated the visiting Detroit Tigers with a season-high 13 runs in their eight run victory.

After a weekend that saw the Cleveland Baseball Club drop two of three to the Minnesota Twins and lose Josh Naylor for the foreseeable future, a big offensive showing was desperately needed. Luckily for the Cleveland, the Tigers came to town and they teed off on the Detroit pitching staff.

Cleveland raced out to an early 2-0 lead in the 1st with a RBI groundout from Jose Ramirez and a sacrifice fly from Eddie Rosario, driving in Cesar Hernandez and Amed Rosario respectively. After the Tigers scored a run in the 2nd, Cleveland added three more to their total. Bradley Zimmer drove in Harold Ramirez to bring their lead back to two. Austin Hedges would follow with a two-run homer, his fourth of the season.

Detroit would score again the 4th to cut into the Cleveland lead yet again. Just like earlier in the game Cleveland would answer with four runs in the inning. Cesar Hernandez would drive in Ernie Clement to make it a 6-2 lead. Jose Ramirez came up next and clobbered a three-run homer to increase the lead to seven.

The Tigers would answer again on a two-run homer to cut the lead to five. Cleveland’s lead would again grow back to seven thanks to a RBI single from Harold Ramirez and a sacrifice fly from Austin Hedges.

Eddie Rosario would double home Jose Ramirez in the 6th to make it a 12-4 game. Then in the 7th Jose Ramirez would drive in his fifth run of the game on a RBI single allowing Ernie Clement to score.

Cleveland’s pitching does just enough

With the way that Cleveland’s offense has been this season, giving up five runs in a game might end up with a loss. Thankfully the offense decided to unload on the Tigers allowing a lot of breathing room for a depleted pitching staff.

Eli Morgan won his first career game despite allowing four runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Three of the four runs allowed by Morgan came on the long ball as Miguel Cabrera and Jake Rogers took him deep.

Nick Sandlin would pitch a scoreless 6th inning with two strikeouts and Blake Parker struck out all three batters he faced in the 7th.

Nick Wittgren was the only other Cleveland pitcher to allow a run. Wittgren surrendered a solo home run Robbie Grossman in the 8th. Bryan Shaw would pitch the final frame, walking one and striking out another.

Game 2 between Cleveland and Detroit will take place at 7:10 P.M. Tuesday at Progressive Field.

Bieber dominates as Cleveland defeats Tigers 5-2

The Cleveland Baseball Club defeated the Detroit Tigers thanks to an excellent pitching performance.

If the Cleveland Baseball Club was going to come away with a win on Thursday they were going to need an excellent starting pitching performance. Lucky for them Shane Bieber was on the mound.

Bieber carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning before Detroit managed to get their first hit of the game. Bieber struck out 12 batters over seven innings while allowing just one run on one hit and walk.

Bryan Shaw would work the 8th and allowed one hit while walking one and striking out another.

James Karinchak took the 9th, allowing one run on one hit and one walk with two strikeouts. Even after the Tigers scored their second run of the game Karinchak didn’t falter as he got the final out of the game on a foul out to third.

Offensively the contributions came from Harold Ramirez and Eddie Rosario. Harold Ramirez drove in Jose Ramirez twice, in the 1st and 6th innings. Eddie Rosario would drive in Harold Ramirez twice, with a two-run homer in the 6th and an RBI double in the 9th.

Cleveland returns home to take on the Blue Jays for a three game set starting Friday.

Cleveland manages only four hits in 1-0 loss to Detroit

The Cleveland Baseball Club was not able to take advantage of impressive outings from their two pitchers in a shutout loss to the Tigers.

Triston McKenzie was called up to make a spot start due to injuries on the Cleveland pitching staff and he delivered. McKenzie allowed just one hit over five innings while striking out five. The only real issue was walks as McKenzie allowed three free passes in his start. This has been a recurring issue for McKenzie and one that Cleveland is hoping that he can improve sooner rather than later.

Cal Quantrill would follow McKenzie in this start and pitch three innings. Quantrill allowed just one run on two hits with four strikeouts. This was an impressive outing from Quantrill. The only problem is that one run is all Detroit needed to hand Cleveland a loss.

Cleveland managed only four hits in the game while walking five times. The combination of Cesar Hernandez, Jordan Luplow, Jose Ramirez, Harold Ramirez, Jake Bauers, and Rene Rivera went 0-17. Luplow, Jose (2), and Bauers accounting for four of the five walks.

The loss ends the possibility of Cleveland sweeping Detroit, but a series win is still possible. The fourth and final game of the series takes place Thursday at 1:10 P.M.

Triston McKenzie to start for Cleveland Wednesday

Advertisements

The Cleveland Baseball Club will be calling up the young pitcher for a spot start against Detroit Wednesday.

In need of a pitcher on Wednesday, the Cleveland Baseball Club is calling up Triston McKenzie from Triple-A. It will be a short stay for McKenzie as he will be optioned back to Columbus after the game.

Cleveland optioned Triston McKenzie to Columbus just a few days ago, but find themselves in need of a pitcher. The spot start route is really the only viable option for Cleveland at this time and giving McKenzie a chance against Detroit is a wise option. McKenzie allowed just two runs in 10 innings with 13 strikeouts against the Tigers last season. Hopefully this can bring back some of the promise seen in 2020 as 2021 has not gone well for the 23-year old starter. Walks, high pitch counts, and a drop in velocity have been a problem this season, resulting in his option to Triple-A.

Cleveland completes sweep of Tigers

Advertisements

It was a 5-2 win for the Cleveland Baseball Club as they completed the three game sweep of the visiting Detroit Tigers at Progressive Field.

Cleveland came into Sunday with the chance to complete their first sweep of the season and seized that opportunity with a 5-2 win. A fairly consistent offensive approach produced 7 hits in 8 innings and combined with their 7 walks and a few Tigers errors paved the way to victory. Unlike their win the previous night, no long balls were needed this time around.

Things were dicey early with Logan Allen on the mound as Detroit took an early 1-0 lead. The Tigers lead combined with the high pitch count early did not look like the recipe for success. Luckily Allen would calm down as he did not allow another run in his 5 innings of work. Allen calming down and settling in after a bumpy start allowed the offense to naturally get into the groove of the game and back him up.

The Cleveland offense was able to score three unanswered runs to take a 3-1 lead through the middle innings. Some hustle from Eddie Rosario highlighted their first run scoring in the 2nd while Cesar Hernandez was still swinging a hot bat for the second game in a row to drive in their second run.

With Nick Wittgren on the mound Detroit struck back on a Wilson Ramos to cut the Cleveland lead to one. The home run from Ramos was the only hit allowed by Wittgren in his single inning of work.

Never too late for drama

James Karinchak came on in the 8th with Cleveland clinging to a one-run lead and did some work. After walking the leadoff batter Karinchak struck out the next three in order to end the inning. This ability to rattle off three strikeouts in a row is why Karinchak has the trust of Terry Francona.

The bottom of the 8th provided some insurance innings for the Cleveland bullpen. Franmil Reyes came through with a single allowing Jose Ramirez and Eddie Rosario to score. With Cleveland’s lead now at three, Emmanuel Clase came on to close things out.

After walking Jemier Candelario to start the inning, Clase bounced back with a strikeout of Wilson Ramos. Jonathan Schoop provided some hope for Detroit with an infield single, but it was all for naught. Clase would get the much needed double play ball off the bat of Nomar Mazara to end the game.

With the sweep Cleveland will travel to Chicago to take on the White Sox for a four-game series starting Monday.

With A Jimmmitude: deGrom, A-Rod, Miggy

Advertisements
No help for deGrom

It is like some cruel joke is being played on Jacob deGrom every time he takes the mound for the New York Mets. deGrom was outstanding in his start on Saturday as he allowed 5 hits and stuck out 14 in 8 innings of work, more often than this should lead to a win. Not for Jacob deGrom. You see the issue is that deGrom gave up a solo home run to Jazz Chisholm in the 2nd inning and that is all Miami needed to win. The Marlins did add two more runs in the 9th off of Edwin Diaz, but one run is all they needed in their 3-0 shutout of the Mets.

It is just so incredibly disappointing to see someone like Jacob deGrom put together an outstanding start and come away with a loss because of a one minor mistake. In most of other games that one run does not matter since the pitchers offense usually picks him up. For some bizarre reason the Mets bats go silent fairly often on a deGrom start which leads to some mind boggling statistics. deGrom has 33 no decisions in the last four years and his ERA in those games is 1.76, that is absolutely insane! The majority of these games are wins for most teams, but here is deGrom getting stuck with no decision after no decision.

The fact the Mets are 11-22 in games that Jacob deGrom receives a no-decision is crazy, especially with that ERA. I just hope that whatever curse that was placed on deGrom that he is doomed to get stuck with no-decisions gets lifted and he starts getting the wins he deserves.

A-Rod taking his talents to the NBA

After failing to buy the aforementioned New York Mets, Alex Rodriguez has turned his sights to the NBA. Rodriguez, along with Marc Lore are buying the Minnesota Timberwolves from current majority owner Glen Taylor.

It seems that Rodriguez actually does have some legitimate interest in owning a sports team. The interesting aspect of this is that he did not go the route of buying a baseball team like when he attempted to buy the Mets. Perhaps this is a stepping stone towards buying a baseball team, but switching the focus to basketball is a smart move by Rodriguez. The NBA basically prints their own money and is extremely popular, more popular than Major League Baseball that’s for sure. If in the future Rodriguez wants to get into baseball, being a part owner of a NBA team should help generate enough money on his own that he could work his way towards owning a larger percentage of a team.

Miggy on the IL

When an older player keeps making trips to the injured list it is incredibly sad to see, that is the case with Miguel Cabrera. The Detroit Tigers have placed the 37-year first baseman on the IL with a bicep injury.

For those who do not remember, it was a left bicep injury in 2018 that ended his season prematurely. Cabrera suffered a rupture in his left biceps tendon that required season ending surgery. The Tigers need to just be careful with Miggy because of his past injury history in that arm.

As a fan of baseball Miguel Cabrera is someone to watch and be amazed with his talent. The fact that there were some career milestones possibly in his future this year makes this just a little bit more depressing. With 488 career home runs, 500 was definitely within reach this season. Cabrera also has 2,869 career hits which a good season could put him in striking distance of reaching 3,000 next season.

I just hope to see a speedy recovery and a return to play for the future Hall of Famer. The fact of the matter is that baseball is better when Miguel Cabrera is on the field.

Cleveland takes on Detroit in final game of series

Advertisements

The Cleveland Baseball Club is looking for a series sweep against the Detroit Tigers in their final game of their three game series.

Saturday night provided the Cleveland Baseball Club with everything they could have hoped for. A dominant pitching performance from Aaron Civale with five home runs leading to an 11-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Cleveland now has the chance to sweep the Tigers after nearly being swept a week before.

It will be the second start of the season for Logan Allen. Allen pitched in a losing effort on Monday as Cleveland was shut out 3-0 against the Royals. The young lefty allowed 2 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings. Both runs that came across to score against Allen were on a two-run homer from Whit Merrifield. Allen has only faced the Tigers for a handful of at-bats (15), allowing 4 hits, 4 walks, 3 RBI, and 1 home run to Grayson Greiner.

Jose Urena will be the Tigers starter in what is also his second start of the season. Minnesota pounded Urena in a 15-6 loss, allowing 5 runs on 4 hits and 4 walks. The former Marlin has not been the most consistent pitcher in his career, but at his best he is better than his previous start. There are two batters in the Cleveland lineup with with extensive history against Urena, Amed Rosario and Cesar Hernandez. Rosario is 6-15 with 2 doubles while Herndanez is 9-33 with 3 home runs and 1 triple. Franmil Reyes has also homered once in six at-bats and so as Josh Naylor in just two.

First pitch is schedule for 1:10 P.M.

Cleveland pummels Detroit with five home runs

Advertisements

The Cleveland Baseball Club won their third straight game against the Detroit Tigers thanks to five home runs in an 11-3 victory.

The long ball has come a theme for the Cleveland Baseball Club when facing the Detroit Tigers. It was two home runs in Friday’s 4-1 victory, both from Franmil Reyes. Cleveland slugged five home runs in their 11-3 Saturday night as they secured a series win against Detroit.

Roberto Perez got things started for Cleveland in the 2nd inning with a two-run shot.

A bat in desperate need to break out, Cesar Hernandez, launched a solo shot for his first home run of the year in the 3rd.

One of the more divisive players in the lineup, Jordan Luplow, blasted a three-run jack in the 4th inning to blow the game wide open.

Luplow actually hit a second home run in the game, but it was incorrectly called a double by those in charge of the review process in New York.

Building upon his hot Friday night, Franmil Reyes hit a solo shot in the 7th to increase the Cleveland lead back to eight.

With an eight run lead in the 8th, Andres Gimenez came up to the plate and hit his first homer in a Cleveland uniform. This home run gave Cleveland a temporary 10-run lead.

As far as pitching goes, Aaron Civale was dominant on the mound. Civale kept the Tigers in check, allowing 1 run on 3 hits over 7.2 innings of work. Cleveland could not have asked anything more from Civale and he delivered.

Oliver Perez and Trevor Stephan handled the final 1.1 innings for Cleveland. The Tigers actually got to Stephan when it did not matter and added two more runs for their side.

Cleveland has a chance to sweep Detroit when they take on the Tigers Sunday at 1:10 P.M.
