Guardians get three back from COVID protocols

The Cleveland Guardians will have three members of their coaching staff return from COVID-19 health and safety protocols. Terry Francona, DeMarlo Hale, and Justin Toole will be rejoining the team while the only player in COVID-19 protocols, Josh Naylor, will remain away from the team.

After Francona initially entered health and safety protocols it was Hale who was slated to temporarily take the helm. Unfortunately Hale followed Francona with the team being forced to postpone a game and turn to Carl Willis to hold down the fort for the time being. The Guardians would go 1-3 during the four game stretch without a large portion of their coaching staff.

Cleveland will look to get back on track Wednesday (weather permitting) in their final matchup with the Cincinnati Reds.

Guardians acquire Yohan Ramirez from Seattle

The Cleveland Guardians were not on the field Monday, but that did not stop them from tinkering with their roster. Cleveland acquired pitcher Yohan Ramirez from the Seattle Mariners for a player to be named later or cash. The Guardians also transferred James Karinchak to the 60-day injured list.

Yohan Ramirez has not pitched well this season with the Mariners, compiling a 7.56 ERA, 1.560 WHIP, and 10.8 K/9. The previous two seasons have shown much more favorable numbers with a 3.35 ERA, 1.221 WHIP, and 11.4 K/9 in 48.1 innings. Cleveland should be able to tap into what was successful in previous seasons and get Ramirez back on the right track.

Guardians drop two of three in Minnesota

The Cleveland Guardians found out things were not so nice when they travelled to Minnesota to take on the Twins. Cleveland found themselves facing adversity before they even made it to the Twin Cities with their series finale against the White Sox being postponed due to COVID-19. Seven coaches entered health and safety protocols and Josh Naylor was placed on the COVID-19 IL with the team recalling Richie Palacios to fill his roster spot. This series was going to be a challenge for the Guardians as the Twins are the current division leader, adding in the organizational shuffle on top top that just made it a bit more difficult.

It was an offensive explosion in Friday’s 12-8 loss with Minnesota at one point holding an 11-2 lead. Some late inning runs that really only impacted the stats of Twins pitcher Griffin Jax ended up not mattering in the end. The series opener appeared to set the stage for what could be a run scoring frenzy at Target Field, it did not.

The next two games saw the Guardians and Twins combine to score just nine runs in 19 innings. It was a 3-2 win in Mickey Mouse extra-innings Saturday propelled by Andres Gimenez and some clever base running by Myles Straw. Sunday’s rubber match lacked late drama as all the run scoring was done by the 5th inning. Three of the four runs score in the contest were via the solo homer, Max Kepler’s RBI single in the 1st being the outlier.

Normalcy (sort of) has seemed to settle in for the Guardians after they were stuck in a sweep streak earlier this season. Cleveland has played moderately well over the last 14 games with a 9-5 record to show for it. The conclusion of the annual Ohio Cup series with the Reds awaits them beginning Tuesday with off days Monday and Thursday before taking on the disappointing Detroit Tigers to finish out the week. This is the opportunity to build up some wins on some lesser opponents to possibly get back into the mix of an underperforming American League Central.

Josh Naylor placed on COVID IL

The Cleveland Guardians have placed outfielder/first baseman Josh Naylor on the COVID IL. This follows seven members of the coaching staff entered health and safety protocols Thursday.

Josh Naylor was finding his stride prior to this development, making MLB late-game history not long ago. Richie Palacios has been recalled to fill an outfield spot (if needed) while the Guardians are without Naylor.

Yu Chang is also back with the club following his time on the COVID list. Kirk McCarty has also been optioned to Triple-A Columbus in a corresponding move.

Richie Palacios recalled by Guardians

The Cleveland Guardians are bringing an outfielder back into the mix as they have recalled Richie Palacios from the Columbus Clippers.

Richie Palacios has appeared in nine games for the Guardians this season with seven hits (one double) and two RBI with a very small sample size slash line of .259/.310/.296. In Triple-A Palacios is slashing .257/.366/.414 with six doubles, one triple, and one home run in 17 games.

Guardians without multiple coaches this weekend

The Cleveland Guardians are set to begin a three-game series with the Minnesota Twins this weekend, but will be without seven members of their coaching staff. Terry Francona, DeMarlo Hale, Chris Valaika, Joe Torres, Sandy Alomar Jr., Mike Sarbuagh, and Justin Toole are in MLB Health and Safety protocols. Carl Willis has been tabbed as acting manager at this time.

Wednesday’s matchup with the White Sox was postponed due to these developments and will be made up at a later date. Francona tested positive for COVID-19 early in the day with Hale to take on the interim manager role in his absence. Hale later tested positive leading to the decision to postpone the game. The Guardians will have a very unconventional coaching staff while those who are in protocols wait to return.

Guardians – White Sox to be made up July 23rd

Following the postponement of Wednesday’s game between the Cleveland Guardians and Chicago White Sox, the game has been rescheduled for July 23rd. The game was postponed due to multiple members of the Guardians testing positive for COVID-19.

It will be the second game of a four-game series and the first of a doubleheader on Saturday. This will be the first series following the All-Star break.

Josh Naylor makes late game MLB history

Cleveland Guardians first baseman/outfielder Josh Naylor made some baseball history in Monday’s 12-9 win over the Chicago White Sox. Naylor became the first player to hit two home runs that drove in three or more runs in the 9th inning or later.

It was a game-tying grand slam in the top of the ninth that provided the Guardians with the final runs needed to force extra-innings.

Then it was Josh Naylor coming up again with a chance to do damage in the 11th inning. Naylor his a three-run shot to give Cleveland a 12-9 lead which they would hold in the bottom half of the inning to secure the win.

It was a 3-5 night for Josh Naylor, doubling in the 8th for his first hit of the game after a walk and two strikeouts. This is just more of the same for Naylor since returning to the lineup. The month of May has been very kind to the 24-year old surging slugger, slashing .391/.444/.739 with two doubles, two home runs, and 14 RBI. This has been a very impressive run for Naylor as he is coming into his own as a major league player.
