Cleveland Baseball Club outfielder Delino DeShields has been placed on the 10-day injured list. The move was made on Sunday.

Some not so good news for the Cleveland Baseball Club. Outfielder Delino DeShields is back on the 10-day injured list, the team made the move on Sunday.

This comes just after Delino DeShields returned to the team and worked out. DeShields was previously away from the team as he tested positive for COVID-19. The 27-year old outfielder had two negative tests that were required in order to return. However his return was short-lived as he is back on the injured list.

There was some hope that DeShields would be able to return and participate in team activities to provide a bit more clarity for their outfield. Unfortunately it seems like that will have to wait just a bit longer as the team will need to look at other options.

Brandon Guyer retires from baseball

Former Tampa Bay Ray and Cleveland baseball player Brandon Guyer has announced his retirement from Major League Baseball.

Brandon Guyer has decided to retire. Guyer released a statement posted to twitter by Ken Rosenthal.

As Rosenthal mentioned Guyer was much better against left-handed pitching than right-handed pitching.

Guyer slashed .224/.297/.323 with an OPS of .620 with 33 doubles, 2 triples, and 8 home runs with 55 RBI against right handers. While facing left handers he slashed a much more impressive .274/.376/.449 with an OPS of .824 with 39 doubles, 3 triples, and 24 home runs with 88 RBI.

Perhaps Guyer will be remembered best is how often he was hit by pitches. Guyer was hit by 85 pitches in his seven year career, leading MLB in 2015 with 24 and 2016 with 31. During his time in Cleveland, Guyer was hit with 27 pitches in 211 games.

Even though his career is over, Cleveland fans will always remember him fondly.

Death, Taxes, Brandon Guyer HBP.

Odds for Cleveland Baseball Club’s new name

Advertisements

Betting odds for the new name for the baseball team based in Cleveland have been released and some are better than others.

Betonline has released betting odds for the new name for the Cleveland Baseball Club. Some are find and others not so much.

The leader is Spiders and overall that name has gotten a lukewarm response at best. Anthony Castrovince put out an excellent article detailing the history of the name this past weekend, but overall it is not that exciting.

Naps seems like a throwaway suggestion and only appears due to it being a former name when Nap Lajoie played in Cleveland over 100 years ago. Lajoie was a great player, but the name Naps brings little to the table.

Guardians is a name that is somewhat popular, but some also are less enthused about the idea.

Buckeyes is a popular option, but there are issues. Not only the fact that Ohio State plays in Columbus with that name, but the team that existed in Cleveland due to segregation. A long discussion would need to be had before seriously considering this option.

Wild Things is a throwaway option and an obvious nod to the movie Major League.

Dobys would be a tribute to Larry Doby, the American League’s first African-American player. This is the first time I’ve seen this name suggested.

Blue Sox is a play on a former name (Bluebirds/Blues) and the teams located in Chicago and Boston. Adding a third “Sox” team doesn’t seem all that enticing.

Rocks is reference to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. There is more to Cleveland than the Rock Hall.

Cuyahogas is playing off their existing name which only would cause issues. Same as the name that does not appear on this list Tribe.

Crows? Disregard this nonsense.

Rockers is the name of the former WNBA team that played in Cleveland. Again, let’s avoid a name that references the Rock Hall.

Unions? Same as Crows, disregard.

Fellers would be a tribute to Bob Feller. It does not seem likely that the team would rebrand as a former players name.

Great Lakers seems like bad ripoff of the NBA team currently located in Los Angeles that once played in Minneapolis. Pass on this one.

Terry Francona in favor of changing team name

Cleveland baseball manager Terry Francona is in favor of the team changing the name and said “It’s time to move forward”.

The name of the Cleveland’s baseball team will be a topic of intense debate until a new name is chosen. Cleveland’s manager Terry Francona stated Sunday that he is in favor of a name change.

This is an important step in regards to renaming and rebranding the team. The fact that Terry Francona is supporting the idea of a new name should end any discussions about not changing the name.

Many names will be discussed as time moves on. From Guardians, Tribe, Spiders, and even a brief discussion about not changing anything at all. With the manager of team backing the idea of a name, the idea of standing pat with a name that is offensive seems to have no chance of happening.

Cleveland should not choose Tribe as their new name

A popular suggestion to replace the name of the Cleveland baseball team is Tribe but it is not necessarily the best option.

Since Cleveland made the announcement that they would be reviewing their team name there has been some suggestions in regards to a new team name. Some are in favor of names like Guardians or Spiders, while others have gravitated to a name that is similar to their current moniker. Tribe.

While Tribe does keep some similarities between the current name and a potential new era, there are issues. The name is sort of a sidestep from their current name, but some negative aspects will still be present. Fans will still show up wearing feathers or other Native American related items. There will be some who embarrassingly show up in redface. Others will still bring the gigantic cardboard signs of Chief Wahoo with them to the games. It’s not that the name Tribe is as offensive as their former name, it is everything that comes with it.

Cleveland will have many things to think when it comes their new name. If the name Tribe is under serious consideration there must be enough done to ensure that any sort of ties to their former name cannot be present.

Brad Mills returns home to family

Cleveland bench coach Brad MIlls has decided to go home to be with his family rather than stay for the upcoming 2020 season.

Cleveland baseball manager Terry Francona provided some important news Sunday afternoon. Bench coach Brad Mills will not be with the club for the upcoming season as he will return home to his family. Francona would also add that he supports Mill’s decision.

Brad Mills determined that this is not only in his best interest, but the best interest of his family to be with them during this difficult time.

In regards to the baseball side of things, Cleveland will be without a key member of their coaching staff. Mills and Francona have worked at various points in their careers, dating back to Tito’s first managerial job with the Philadelphia Phillies. Francona stated that Mill’s responsibilities would be divvied up between other members of the coaching staff.

Delino DeShields tests positive for COVID-19

Advertisements

Cleveland outfielder Delino DeShields has tested positive for COVID-19. Indians president Chris Antonetti made the announcement Friday.

DeShields is currently the only player absent from the team as they reconvened at Progressive Field in Cleveland. DeShields will have to test negative twice before he can rejoin the team.

Delino DeShields was acquired with Emmanuel Clase in the trade that sent Corey Kluber to Texas this past offseason. Clase will miss all of 2020 due to a PED suspension.

DeShields is one of many outfielders that will complete for playing time this season. Cleveland has too many outfielders for not enough spots. DeShields was a perfect candidate to take on the extra-innings runner on second role, but that will have to wait for the time being.

There is more than enough time for DeShields to fully recover before the abbreviated season starts. If his absence goes into the season they will have to evaluate all of their options to replace to DeShields. While not an easy task, Cleveland has a plethora of outfielders to select from. Greg Allen, Bradley Zimmer, Tyler Naquin, and Daniel Johnson could get a look if Delino DeShields is not ready for when baseball returns.

Terry Francona open to new rules

Advertisements

Cleveland baseball manager Terry Francona is embracing the new MLB rules for the abbreviated 2020 season including the universal DH.

There are new rules for the 60-game 2020 MLB season and Terry Francona is not opposed to them. Francona was speaking to the media Monday and was asked about the new rules.

Terry Francona obviously embraces the universal DH since Cleveland is an American League club. It seems like Francona is at least willing to give the runner on second base a chance, which is all it needs.

The universal DH is the less controversial of the two rules. Many have complained about the lack of production from the pitchers spot in the lineup for years. Adopting a universal DH for this season will help in regards to making things work across this almost slapped together format. Having a uniform set of rules in this time is the best course of action.

The runner on second base is the rule that will cause quite a bit of controversy. While it is understandable that there is a push to shorten extra-inning games, it seems like this was the first idea they came up with. This idea will help increase run production to potentially end extra-innings games earlier, but both teams will have the same advantage with the runner on second base. This new rule could very well end up with both teams trading runs back and forth rather than ending the game sooner.

There could be success with the new rules for 2020. There is also the same possibility for them to fail completely. The only way to find out is play with these new rules in place.

It is time for a name change in Cleveland

Advertisements

This is something that many have gone back and forth on for a long time. It is a subject that many have been concerned about when it comes to baseball in Cleveland, but now is definitely the time to address the issue at hand. It is time for the Cleveland Indians to change their name.

Honestly the team should have changed it a long time ago, but we are at a point in time where many brands are addressing insensitive titles and imagery. Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben’s are just two examples of brands realizing the racially insensitive history of their logo and name. The Cleveland Indians already addressed one part of their own issue by distancing themselves from Chief Wahoo. Now it is time to finish the job and find a new moniker for their baseball club.

What should the new name be?

As far as a new name goes that is where I don’t have an answer. A common suggestion is to bring back the Spiders name. The name isn’t great and the team was terrible with that name so let’s leave that in the past.

Another name that has some level of traction is Buckeyes. This just seems really messy. The Buckeyes were a team in a league that only existed due to segregation. I have never and will never purchase anything with the Cleveland Buckeyes name or logo on it because it just feels dirty. Collecting revenue in this manner has never sit right with me and it never will.

What name will Cleveland’s baseball team go with once they inevitably change their name? That’s the million dollar question isn’t it? At the end of the day it just feels like Cleveland’s baseball team still being named Indians has a definite end date and that end date seems to be approaching rather quickly.

UPDATE

A huge domino that could result in Cleveland changing their name appears ready to fall. The Washington Redskins are under a lot of pressure to change their name and it appears that it is more than likely to happen.

Once this happens Cleveland is next. There is absolutely no way that Washington will change their name and Cleveland keeps theirs. Other teams (such as Cleveland) will follow as they look to find an appropriate name.

UPDATE CONTINUED

The Cleveland Indians released a statement on their twitter account that they would be evaluating their name.

A name change seems inevitable at this point in time and it is a long time coming. The only question is whether they will play the 2020 season with this name or look to change it beforehand. The possibility of a name change cannot have come off guard so there has likely been some discussions in regards to this manner previously. At least that’s what the organization should have been doing for some time now considering the removal of Chief Wahoo and previous pressure to change the name.
