The Cleveland Browns have activated the linebacker ahead of Sunday night’s playoff game.

B.J. Goodson will be active for the Cleveland Browns take on the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday night. The team activated Goodson from the reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday afternoon.

B.J. Goodson has been the best linebacker for the Browns this season and his presence was missed during his two week absence. The fifth year pro has 91 total tackles (59 solo) this season, 2 of which have gone for a loss. Goodson has 0.5 sacks and has registered 3 quarterbacks hits for the Cleveland defense.

Nick Chubb, defense carries Browns to win

Nick Chubb carried the offensive workload and the Browns defense did their fair share in the 34-20 win over the Washington Football Team.

If the Cleveland Browns were going to win their second consecutive game they were going to need to run Nick Chubb a lot. Luckily Cleveland combined a dominant rushing attack with a surprising defensive performance to defeat the Washington Football Team 34-20.

Nick Chubb carried the ball 19 times for 108 yards and 2 touchdowns. This is the best way for Cleveland to be consistent on offense. Chubb is the best offensive weapon on the team and he needs to be used that way. Build the offense around one of, if not the best running back in the NFL. Nick Chubb is what makes this offense go and giving him ample opportunities to pull his weight will lead to positive outcomes for the Browns.

Even when the Browns were not running the ball with Nick Chubb they incorporated their other running back, Kareem Hunt. Yards did not come easy for Hunt as he finished with 16 carries for 46 yards. Hunt did make an impact in the passing game, catching 2 passes for 18 yards and 1 touchdown. Even though the numbers don’t necessarily show it, Kareem Hunt had a fairly large impact on the game. The duo of Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt are going to give opposing defenses fits for the foreseeable future.

Defense steps up

This came out of nowhere. The Cleveland Browns defense had an impressive showing. Cleveland forced 5 Washington turnovers and sacked Dwayne Haskins 3 times. Myles Garrett finished two sacks, including a strip sack and Sheldon Richardson had the other. The biggest surprise on Sunday was linebacker BJ Goodson.

BJ Goodson recovered a fumble, intercepted a pass, and defended 1 other. For someone who is not necessarily prolific in pass defense, he had a pretty good day.

Karl Joseph had an interception on an overthrown pass from Dwayne Hasksins. Joseph returned the ball 49 yards and set the Browns offense up well, eventually resulting in a touchdown. Joseph also had 6 total tackles (4 solo) in the game.

The other Cleveland defender with an interception was Malcolm Smith. Smith read the eyes of Haskins and jumped the route to force the turnover. Smith did not record a tackle, but his interception was more than enough.

One of the more impressive pieces of information to come out of this game was that Cleveland scored touchdowns after all three interceptions. In the past this would be an area that they would struggle in. It felt like it was all too often the team would end up punting after falling to gain a first down. Scoring touchdowns after a turnover was a nice change of pace.

With this win the Browns are over .500 for the first time since 2014 and this is the first time they are 2-1 since 2011 . This was also the first time since 2010 that they scored 30+ points in back-to-back games. Finally, the last time they were 2-0 at home to start the season was 2004.

Cleveland faces a much tougher opponent in Week 4 as they travel to Dallas to take on the Cowboys.

Browns linebackers still a work in progress

The Cleveland Browns may have signed B.J. Goodson and drafted Jacob Phillips, but they still need help at the linebacker position.

If there was one particular area that the Cleveland Browns needed help in this offseason it was the linebacker position. The moves that Cleveland has made have not been all that inspiring. Sure, they added B.J. Goodson through free agency and drafted Jacob Phillips. It just seems like they could have done a lot more to bolster what appears to be the weakest part of their defense.

In addition to Goodson and Phillips, Cleveland has Mack Wilson and Simone Takitaki in the mix. Wilson and Takitaki each had some moments, but there is still plenty of room to improve for both. The Browns could have kept one or both of Joe Schobert or Christian Kirksey, instead they are opting for the massive overhaul in the middle of their defense.

There is still time for the Browns to make some moves to improve their linebacking group. Free agent outside linebackers include Nigel Bradham, Clay Matthews, and Markus Golden. Inside linebackers include Alec Ogletree, Mark Barron, and Darron Lee. Are they perfect fits? Not necessarily. Some are older and others may want more money than the Browns would like to spend at this moment in time. At the end of the day it would be wise for Cleveland to add at least one linebacker before they no longer have the option to.

BJ Goodson signs one-year deal with Browns

The Cleveland Browns have signed BJ Goodson to a one-year deal after moving on from Christian Kirksey and Joe Schobert.

BJ Goodson is not the most exciting linebacker, but that is who the Cleveland Browns have slated to be a starter after signing Wednesday.

It is a one-year deal for Goodson and the Browns, exactly what the front office is looking for at this point in free agency. Cleveland has already made their high profile signings, now it is time for bargain shopping, buying low on a player with the hope he outperforms his contract.

Goodson spent the first three years of his career in Green Bay before ending up with the Giants last season. Goodson is not great in coverage which will create problems in regards to how the linebacker position is handled. Looking for someone to help with the run? BJ Goodson is your guy. Need help in pass coverage? Better look elsewhere.

Cleveland created an unnecessary need by how they completely botched the linebacker position this offseason. The Browns let Joe Schobert walk and released Christian Kirksey only for both of them to sign deals that the Browns could have made work. Now they currently have Goodson in addition to Mack Wilson and Sione Takitkai as their linebackers. Not necessarily the most inspiring group at this moment in time.
