Sam Darnold

Sam Darnold worth a 1st rounder in trade?

ESPN’s Adam Schefter believes that the New York Jets could get a late first round pick for the former third overall pick.

Apparently some still think highly of New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold. Adam Schefter thinks that a team could give up a late first rounder for Darnold via trade.

This may be some wishful thinking. Sam Darnold has not really impressed anyone outside of Colin Cowherd. Darnold has completed just 59.8% of his passes with 45 touchdowns and 39 interceptions in three seasons with the Jets. When it comes to Darnold the issue has been and will be always be turnovers. In addition to throwing interceptions, Darnold has fumbled 20 times in 38 games. Neither one of these numbers are acceptable on any level.

To be fair, Sam Darnold has been coached by one of biggest clown-shows of all-time in Adam Gase. Gase is the literal description of fraud when it comes to coaching ability. Most of what gets attributed to him was actually the masterwork of Peyton Manning, somewhere along the way it was attached to Gase and as we have seen it just isn’t true. Could Darnold perform better once he is no longer being coached by Gase? Sure, but that would require having belief that Darnold can be a starting caliber player which is not a great bet.

It is possible that the Jets move on from Sam Darnold, but they may need to lower their expectations. A first rounder, even late, seems a bit steep for a quarterback who has not been anything better than mediocre for an extended period of time. A second rounder is more palatable, but exploring other options is the better path to take.
