Indians start hot, fall to Royals 13-7

The Cleveland Indians raced out to a 7-0 lead, but the Kansas City Royals rallied and scored 13 unaswered runs handing Cleveland a loss.

When the Indians lineup featured a handful of their regular starters they were able to score seven runs in the first two innings. Carlos Santana drove in three runs in the first two innings. One came via a single and the other two by way of a two-run homer. Trayce Thompson drove in two with a first inning triple. Yu Chang would drive in Thompson with an RBI single. Leonys Martin also added to the run total with a solo shot in the second inning. Unfortunately the Indians were not able to score after the second inning.

The pitchers of note in Sunday’s loss were Oliver Perez, Tyler Clippard, Nick Goody and Cody Anderson. These four combined for four innings, two hits and two strikeouts. Anderson did allow a walk in his only inning of work.

The Indians also got some contributions from other pitchers. Sam Hentges started the game and went two innings, allowed zero hits and struck out three batters. Jon Edwards pitched one inning, allowed one hit and struck out one batter.

The issues for the Indians came when bullpen arms not expected to make the Major League club came into the game. Brooks Pounders went two thirds of inning and allowed four runs. R.C. Orlan pitched one third of an inning and also allowed four runs. Asher Wojciechowski allowed three runs in just one third of an inning.

At this point it is becoming quite obvious just which pitchers will start in Cleveland and which pitchers will start in the minors. That is of course if nothing drastic happens. That would change things in regards to who makes the team.

The Cleveland Indians next opponent will be the San Diego Padres at 3:10 P.M. Monday.
