Kevin Love has not requested a trade

The Cavs veteran has not requested a trade at this time.

The Cleveland Cavaliers may end up trading Kevin Love this offseason, but a trade request has not been made according to reports. Sam Amico of Hoops Wire reported last week that the Cavs will attempt to facilitate a trade of Love prior to next season. Amico also added that Love has not requested a trade at this time.

The fact of the matter is that the Cavs have needed to move on from Kevin Love for some time. Not only because the team is one of the worst in the league, but the Cavaliers need to finally close the book on their runs to The Finals. It really seems like the team is trying to cling to what was rather than realizing they are no longer close to being anything resembling a good basketball team.

It is beyond time to separate and move on. Cleveland needs to do good by one of the key players during their four seasons of contention and let him go to a team of his desire. Whether that is by trading Kevin Love or buying him out, it is best if both parties go their separate ways.

Cavs exploring trade options for Collin Sexton

The Cleveland Cavaliers have reportedly begun to explore their trade options for guard Collin Sexton.

The trade chatter surrounding the Cleveland Cavaliers and Collin Sexton is only getting louder. It was just a few days ago that two separate radio stations in Cleveland had two different people suggesting that a trade is possible. Now another report has surfaced with the wheels now appearing to be in motion.

Jeremy Woo of SI is reporting that the Cleveland Cavaliers are in the early stages of exploring a trade of Collin Sexton. Woo had the following to say.

According to league sources, the Cavaliers have begun to explore trade options involving leading scorer Collin Sexton. Sexton, 22, is extension-eligible this summer, averaged 24.3 points per game last season, and appears likely to seek a maximum contract. Also eligible for an extension is 23-year-old center Jarrett Allen, who is also expected to command a lucrative deal from Cleveland. There’s belief around the league that Cleveland prefers to move on from Sexton, rather than sign him to a deal that would greatly inhibit their flexibility moving forward. The Cavs hold the No. 3 pick in the draft, and could end up selecting another guard, which could further expedite the process of a trade.

Jeremy Woo on the Cavs and a possible Collin Sexton trade

This is not necessarily all that surprising considering the Cavs have the third overall pick in the upcoming draft and could use that to draft his replacement. There have been questions about the actually fit with Collin Sexton and others on the roster, mainly Darius Garland. Garland is more of a traditional point guard while Sexton is a scoring guard. The fact both are in the starting lineup is the issue considering Sexton would be a much better option off the bench. If Cleveland could somehow convince Sexton to take a role off the bench it may work, but a possible pricey contract extension may throw a wrench in this idea.

The Cavs would be foolish to hand Collin Sexton a large extension to begin with, but if he was a bench player it would be worse. While paying valuable bench players is fine for competitive teams, the Cavs are not anywhere close to being that at the current moment. Paying a bench player a high salary would continue the lack of direction the team has had for the past few seasons. Cleveland needs to avoid any type of decision which would lead to continuing to spin the tires and not move forward. That may mean moving on from Collin Sexton, which appears to be a lot closer to actually happening than some think it is. It seems like it may be only a matter of time before the team moves on from Young Bull.

Could the Cavs move Collin Sexton?

The Cavs landed the third overall pick pick in the 2021 NBA Draft leading to the possibility that the team trades Collin Sexton.

With the NBA Draft Lottery going the Cavs way Tuesday, a ton of options are now available for Cleveland. Not just options in the draft, but possible alterations to the current roster. Brian Windhorst of ESPN was on ESPN Cleveland Wednesday and stated that the team could end up trading current players on the team. Windhorst specially mentioned Collin Sexton as someone who could be on the move along with Darius Garland.

Of course this scenario is part of the hypothetical drafting of Jalen Suggs by the Cavs. Windhorst also agreed with Ben Axelrod’s opinion of “pumping the brakes” on the possibility of core four for the Cavs.

Windhorst was not the only person to talk about a possible trade of Collin Sexton Wednesday as Matt Babcock of BasketballNews.com appeared on Baskin and Phelps on 92.3 The Fan. Babcock discussed the possibility of the Cavs trading Sexton during his appearance on the show. Given the scenario of having Sexton, Garland, Jalen Green/Suggs, and Okoro, Babcock said that one of them would have to move to the bench. Babcock added that he believes here is enough minutes for all of them, but they would have to buy-in to make it work.

At the end of the day, whatever the Cavs decide to do in the draft should not be impacted by their current roster. The team is so far away from being relevant that they need to keep infusing talent into the team. Even if that comes at the expense of someone like Collin Sexton.

The Cavaliers had an 11.2% chance to end up with the third overall pick. Cleveland was most likely to land the seventh overall pick (25.5%), with sixth having the second-best chances (18.2%). Third was actually fifth of nine possible picks that the Cavs could have ended up with.

The final draft lottery results appear below.

Should the Cavs make a play for Ben Simmons?

Advertisements

With the inescapable feeling that the Philadelphia 76ers will trade the former number one overall pick, should the Cleveland Cavaliers be in on the trade talks?

The Philadelphia 76ers season has come to a close and the team has their scapegoat, Ben Simmons. It is not just the fact that Simmons passed up that one shot right under the basket, it is many things. Simmons only attempting three shots in the 4th quarter in a seven game series is an issue as well as overall fit with Joel Embiid. Due to these circumstances it appears that the 76ers are going to have to make a change in order to get over the hump, most believe it will be trading Simmons to shake up their roster a bit. This brings forth an interesting question.

Should the Cleveland Cavaliers make a play for Ben Simmons?

On the surface this seems like an instant knee-jerk reaction of yes. The Cavs are not a good team and finding a way to improve with young talented players is a good way to turn things around. Through four seasons (five total) Ben Simmons averages 15.9 points and 7.7 assists per game. Adding this production to what expects to be a foundation of Jarrett Allen, Isaac Okoro, and Darius Garland or Collin Sexton (whichever one is not traded), would be a boost. The fact of the matter is it is not quite that simple. There is no doubt that adding Simmons would raise the floor of the team, but does it raise the ceiling?

It is when examining the shot distances from Ben Simmons that some issues become apparent, not just for Simmons, but as a potential fit with some of the younger Cavs.

98.9% of Ben Simmons’ field goal attempts have come from two-point range. That would be a bit more palatable if 87.4% did not come from inside 10 feet. The issue at hand is that Simmons is a guard and he should be more of a threat from outside 10 feet. In fact, Simmons has only attempted 12.7% of his field goals in his career outside of 10 feet. The issue is not his conversion rate from up close, because no one would complain about 71.6% from inside three feet and 41.1% from three to 10. It is the location of these shots in conjunction with the Cavs current roster.

As currently constructed the Cavs have Jarrett Allen (pending RFA) and Isaac Okoro in the starting lineup. These are two players who not necessarily known for their offensive abilities at the current moment. While Okoro did develop a bit late last season, Allen is strictly an in the paint guy. Having two, potentially three players that an opposing team does not have to concern themselves with outside of 10 feet would be a massive problem for the Cavs. Perhaps saying it is a massive problem is taking it a bit lightly, it would be team building malpractice.

Part of the issue the team currently has with Collin Sexton is that there are not enough other legitimate shooters on the roster to go with his all dominant style of play. Possibly swapping out Sexton or adding Ben Simmons to a lineup with him would only the make the issue more prevalent.

Back to the question at hand, does Ben Simmons raise the Cavs ceiling?

While the addition of Ben Simmons could raise the ceiling, it wouldn’t be high enough to make a substantial difference by itself. If Cleveland could somehow acquire Simmons and someone like CJ McCollum and reshuffle the roster with players who are a bit more proven, that is when a real difference in terms of ceiling would be seen. As mentioned above, Simmons would certainly raise the floor of the Cavs, but the ceiling would not budge enough to warrant a move for just Simmons as things stand currently.

Isaac Okoro named NBA All-Rookie second team

Advertisements

The Cleveland Cavaliers rookie has been named to the 2020-2021 All-Rookie second team.

There were not a lot of high points in the 2020-21 season for the Cleveland Cavaliers, but the play of Isaac Okoro was one. Okoro played well enough to earn NBA All-Rookie second team honors.

Isaac Okoro started all 67 games he appeared in and averaged 9.6 points on 42% shooting from the field in addition to 3.1 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game. Okoro was much better inside the three-point line as he shot 29% from deep and 50.1% from two. Offense was not the primary reason why Okoro was the Cavs pick at five, it was defense. Okoro came in as a good defender while his offense was a work in progress. Over the course of the season the offense improved, averaging 16.2 points in the final 12 games of the season. There are signs that a major step forward offensively could come next season and that would be a huge win for the Cavs in their rebuild process.

Cavs should pursue CJ McCollum

Advertisements

The Cleveland Cavaliers should look to shake up their roster and pursue the Portland Trail Blazers guard via trade.

It’s another season in the second post-LeBron era and they are not anywhere closer to being relevant. The team has made moves in attempt to build something new and different, a team not necessarily reliant on one player, but a core of players. While their attempts have resulted in productive NBA players on the team, it simply has not made a dent in the returning to the contention arena. Like other teams who have had their season end already, Cleveland needs to evaluate their roster and determine who they should build around and who they can let go. There is no doubt that the Cavs need to shake things up on their roster and that brings us to the rumor that popped up over the weekend. There is another team that could be shaking things up bringing us to the Portland Trail Blazers and CJ McCollum.

An article from Jabari Young appearing on CNBC looks into the situation in Portland and what may happen this offseason. Young stated that the Cavs could be an option to land McCollum should the Trail Blazers look to deal him this offseason. This was not the only outlet to connect the dots between Cleveland and Portland in regards to McCollum.

A proposed trade from Greg Swartz of Bleacher Report has the Cavs acquiring CJ McCollum from Portland in exchange for Kevin Love, Collin Sexton, and a 2022 second-round pick which originally belonged to San Antonio. Cleveland would also acquire Derrick Jones Jr. in the deal.

Money-wise this is essentially a virtual swap of the contracts of CJ McCollum and Love, but that is not what to focus on. This is about the Cavs being able to improve their starting lineup by inserting McCollum into it while removing Sexton and Love from the equation. While McCollum is slated to make $30 million over the next three seasons, removing Love’s deal and the future money Sexton will make from the equation helps reset things a bit. There will be a team that is going to pay Collin Sexton, Cleveland should not be it. Let any other team take on the task of paying someone who many view as a sixth-man and nothing more. While sixth-men are important, paying a lot of money for one is not in the Cavs best interest at the current moment.

If the above trade did occur it would allow the Cavs to move from two players they probably should while at the same time acquiring a legitimate guard to play next to Darius Garland. With that Cleveland could start to make significant strides forward for the first time in a long time.

Koby Altman to meet with media Friday

The Cleveland Cavaliers general manager will meet with the media on Friday.

After relative and strange silence following the season, Cleveland Cavaliers general manager Koby Altman will finally speak to the media on Friday.

It will be the usual end of season media availability from Koby Altman. The Cavs have taken some flak for the silence and unknown status of when this would take place leading to some speculation about the status of certain members of the organization. Definitive answers on certain subjects should come during this media availability Friday.

Potential Cavaliers uniform leak is mixed bag

Advertisements

A possible leak of a new uniform from the Cleveland Cavaliers surfaced and overall it is a mix bag of good and bad.

The NBA never stops producing new uniforms and there was a batch of uniforms that leaked on Tuesday. Included in the leak was a uniform for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Cavaliers uniform uses the throwback logo and font and uses the stripes as well.

Positives include the color combination and not using too many colors, the only time a third appears (white) is on the sleeves and collar. The current Cavs uniforms are a victim of too many colors being used and this is a bit of a step back (a good thing) from a design standpoint.

As far as negatives go it is centered on one thing, the design of the team name. The circular fashion of Cleveland Cavaliers is more suited for a center court logo than appearing on a uniform. That is what makes the current Indiana Pacers uniforms so frustrating to look at.

At the end of the day these are better than the ransom note/serial killer uniforms the Cavaliers used this season. There is still room to improve, but taking any step in the right direction is a good one.

Cavaliers lose final game of season 123-109

The Cleveland Cavaliers were not able to defeat the Brooklyn Nets in the final game of the regular season.

Even if the Cleveland Cavaliers would have been full strength they would have had a tough time being competitive against the Brooklyn Nets. Kevin Love and Darius Garland were the only two players with injuries who did not play who were not previously designated as out for the season. The absence of Love and Garland certainly played a factor as the Nets outscored the Cavs 99-76 though the first three quarters before Cleveland scored 33 compared to Brooklyn’s 24 in a garbage time 4th quarter.

Not helping matters was Collin Sexton getting ejected midway through the 3rd quarter.

While overall the foul flagrant 2 foul call is a bit extreme here, Sexton cannot be this reckless in a game. That is before even mentioning that the player that Sexton fouled was Kevin Durant. It was a no-win situation here for Sexton and he needs to be aware of this. Sexton finished with 16 points and 5 assists in his final game of the season.

There were four other Cavaliers who scored in double-digits in the contest. Dean Wade and Isaac Okoro were tied for a team-high 18 points. Damyean Dotson chipped in 17 off the bench and Brodric Thomas added 14 as well.

Now that the season is over the Cavaliers have a lot of decisions to make. There are obvious players who do not work together. Additionally, the team needs to pick one direction to head towards (rebuild) instead of attempting to contend at this point in time.
