Browns sign safety Karl Joseph

The Cleveland Browns have addressed their depleted secondary by signing former Raiders safety Karl Joseph to a one-year deal.

Defense is a clear area of need and the Cleveland Browns addressed that Wednesday by signing former Raiders safety Karl Joseph.

It is a one-year deal for Joseph who is looking to bounce back in 2020. This is the exact type of deal that makes sense for both sides. Cleveland needs help on the back end of their defense and Joseph needs to rebuild some value. If Joseph plays well and stays healthy he could set himself up for a big contract after the season. By signing him to only a one-year deal, Cleveland has the option to move on after the year if things do not work out.

Karl Joseph is a big hitting safety who is better against the run than in coverage. Cleveland still needs to add another safety to make up for his lack of coverage skills. The Browns could look at other free agent options, the draft, or both. Any avenue they take to improve their secondary is a good one because they desperately need help.

The issue that exists with Joseph is health. Joseph has not played a full 16 game season during his four year career. Betting on Joseph to appear in every game is not a good one considering it is incredibly likely he misses some time.
