Browns, Nick Chubb agree to extension

The Cleveland Browns did something not many thought they would do, extend running back Nick Chubb. The two sides agreed to a three-year deal worth $36 million with $20 million guaranteed.

While on the surface it seems like a team friendly deal only, it is actually a win-win.

Coming into the draft, Nick Chubb had questions about his health which resulted into slipping into round two and Cleveland making him their second selection in the round. For his pro career he’s been healthy except for this past season which saw Chubb miss four games due to injury. It is more than possible that Chubb realized how fragile things can be playing the position he does and that one more injury next season could see this number crater to something significantly lower. By agreeing to this deal now it gives him long term financial security in addition to setting him up for another big  payday while still only being 29 years old.

In the team building process it is important to identify which players can be foundational players. Additionally, a team must understand the right amount of years and dollar figure to allocate to a certain player. At this time, three years and $36 million is the perfect amount for Nick Chubb from the Browns point of view. It also clearly shows that they understand which player is the engine of their offense in the current scheme.
