Browns contract offer rejected by Dez Bryant

The Cleveland Browns reportedly offered a one-year deal to Dez Bryant which was rejected. Per reports the deal was worth less than $5 million. It appears that Bryant is waiting for a larger deal but it does not appear that one will come.

The Browns were only the second team to offer Bryant a deal this offseason. Baltimore offered Bryant a contract worth more than what was given to Michael Crabtree. Crabtree was given a three-year deal worth $21 million. The report at the time was that Bryant preferred a one-year deal so he could again test the market next offseason. Cleveland gave him that opportunity but it is apparent Bryant did not like the financial compensation he would receive.

Since Bryant has only received limited interest from teams, rejecting the Browns offer may have been a mistake. Bryant has gone from a multi-year deal from Baltimore to a one-year deal from Cleveland to no prospects whatsoever. With the regular season starting relatively soon Bryant may have waited too long for a deal that meets his financial demands. At this point in the offseason that offer is most likely not going to come.

Bryant is perceived to have a bad attitude and be a “me first” type of player so ending up in a situation such as New England just will not happen. Teams are not exactly knocking down the door to sign Bryant so any deal offered to him is better than no deal at all.

Bryant wants to build his value and test the market next year. The problem is he will not be able to do that if he does not see the field. Cleveland still has interest in Bryant and wants to sign him. Bryant would be smart to pick up the phone and accept an offer from the Browns as soon as possible. If not his market could go from limited to non-existent and his days as an NFL player could be over.
